A WONDERFUL MAGAZINE
I had to take a few minutes to tell you how much I am loving The Monsey View and how that loves continues to grow on a weekly basis. I confess that when you first started, I wasn't quite sure that another local magazine would succeed, but you have proven yourselves week after week, with a wide variety of features that appeal to every member of the family. While I don't have any little kids at home, I love seeing all of the features that are geared towards the little ones, that not only encourage them to read The Monsey View, but engages them actively. The drawing contests and the short poems that have been cropping up have kids putting pen to paper to display their creativity. Your new feature with the cutouts will keep little ones busy for hours, always a bracha for us busy moms, and what Monsey View reader doesn't stop and stare at the weekly picture and try to figure out where in town it was taken? As for the adults, I am finding the weekly election feature fascinating. We only elect a president once every four years and keeping track of how the electoral college works and how the process unfolds is complicated. Your well-written column spells out the details clearly. I also enjoyed reading about our

new neighbors every week and hearing how they are acclimating themselves to our wonderful town. I admit that the weekly Boggle contest leaves me scratching my head. I am college educated and a professional writer, and yet, when I look at the winning entry every week- I see more than just a handful of words included that I am completely unfamiliar with, and that does leave me wondering... But life isn't all about winning and I applaud you for coming up with an engaging, popular weekly feature that is helping us all expand our vocabularies in a fun way. I can't wait to see what you come up with next and hope The Monsey View continues to grow!

LISTEN TO YOUR CHILD
This letter is addressed to the mother who wasn't sure about the message of “The Partygoer.” My reason for publishing this episode was to bring to bring awareness to parents that children need a listening ear. In today's world very few really listen to their children! when a child comes home claiming that he/she dislikes his/her teacher - what's your reaction? Do you listen to what's behind it? Or do you rebuff the statement with a shrug, or even worse- blame the child's misbehavior? As a parent we must listen to what our children say, and even more to the unsaid. We have to read between the lines, and really take their words into consideration, regardless of age. Accept your child's words at face value. Do not undermine their ''storytelling'' and understand their pain. Of course, as a parent you have the right to verify the information later. But for the moment give the child the feeling of security and trust! Take him seriously and you will not regret it. It will build your child forever. The writer of The Partygoer
Your Voice
BE A MENTCH
Many people have complained about the building happening in Monsey. I however, have a completely different take... Although I don’t love seeing trees chopped down and watching our community take on a different, more city-like look- I don't mind making room for more neighbors. I do however, expect mentchlichkeit during the building process and after new neighbors move in. For several weeks now, a purple John has been sitting in the middle of the sidewalk that I use every day. Although purple is a nice color, it's far from a lovely sight. Worse yet is the impediment to traffic. Today was the end of my patience. It was raining and the street was a huge puddle. I NEEDED that sidewalk! So I, a heimishe Yiddishe mama, was seen pushing a porta potty down the street and onto the lot it belongs on. It sounds funny, but it's not. Trust me. Please remember that private and public properties have to be respected for what they are. Then we'll be the best of neighbors. Welcome to the neighborhood! P.M.

I had a neighbor’s child sleeping over last night, when at 12:30 AM, I noticed the door of the children’s room opening. Moving closer to investigate, I saw the little boy walking out, shoes in his hands! Echoes of the story I read in Stories Around Town about the child who walked out of the house at dawn reverberated in my mind as I tucked the child back into bed. I then went to check if the door was locked, and for added measure, bolted the door as well. Now, I didn’t know this little boy before, and even his mother is only casually acquainted with me; but I gladly hosted him for the night, because I know how difficult it is to find a babysitter when there’s a close simcha that I have to attend. So, I thought of an idea; maybe someone out there will be able to make into an actuality. I believe that there are girls willing to babysit and earn a little pocket money. It just takes so many phone calls to track them down. Why can’t we have a babysitting agency with a list of all the girls available, with their info and references? Then a mother can call the number and give her location, timing, and be matched up with someone. Maybe the family would have to send in their Ishur to state that there’s no internet in the home, but I’m sure all the issues could be worked out with a little brainstorming. It would be a tremendous chesed for young families, especially those without family nearby. A young mother

Are You Afraid of Fat? Not too long ago, I mentioned the consumption of fat in one of my articles. However, I feel that it’s important to address the topic again. Whenever I inform new clients that full-fat foods are healthy, I can’t help but notice the shocked look on their faces—but the truth is Hashem didn’t manufacture skim milk or lowfat yogurts. An experience I recently had with a client propelled me to discuss the matter further. While I was sitting with a new client and figuring out an effective fat-burning meal plan, she was very surprised that she could fry her chicken cutlets and still be healthy. (We discussed the importance of choosing the right oils, of course.) Most people don’t particularly like the taste of dry chicken, but they worry about frying their foods when they’re on a diet. Well, the fact that it’s okay to fry often comes as a surprise to people, but what threw me off about this client was that she hadn’t added any oil or mayo to her salad for the past eight years! “If I wanted my salad to have some moisture,” she said, “I’d put it in the fridge overnight so that the greens could absorb the liquid from the tomatoes.” I was so dumfounded by her words, and I really

pitied her. “You’re depriving yourself,” I said. “Not only are you keeping yourself from losing weight, but you’re robbing yourself of your health! Your body needs healthy fats in order to function.” I asked her right then if I could recount this story in my article to bring more awareness to people, and she readily agreed on the condition that she would remain anonymous. In fact, she said that since time is of essence, she would read this article to learn more about this societal fear of fat. So, thank you, dear client, for allowing me to share your story. Although I still think this is an extreme example, I was already aware that people are busy counting fat grams and allowing themselves only a certain amount of fat each day. This is what I repeat to clients again and again: 1. It all depends what type of fat you’re eating. 2. There is a difference between restricting your intake of healthy fats and using whole fats in moderate amounts. Your toast can have butter, and you should feel free to splash full-fat milk into your coffee; you can fry your food in coconut oil, which

stays stable in high temperatures. Ultimately, many of you would very much like to eat more healthy fats, and you may have just been part of the “scared-of-fat” society.
DIFFERENT FATS: Trans fats There are poly- and monounsaturated fats that are commonly referred to as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, which we will talk about in greater detail next week. Today I want to address trans and saturated fats, which many people mistake for “bad” fats. In fact, I couldn’t even find one source that doesn’t consider trans fat poison! It bears repeating that trans fats, hydrogenated oils and partially-hydrogenated oils are poison for the human body! In the process of “hydrogenation,” liquid oil is heated and combined with hydrogen gas (a chemical). The reason behind this process is that the oil will have a longer shelf life and be less likely to spoil. This is a great advantage for manufacturers, but it’s very bad for you. Trans fats are often found in margarine and commercial products such as cookies, cake, pastries, frozen desserts and
ice creams—I even found it in chocolate-covered rice cakes. The only way to know whether a food contains trans fats is to read the label. If the label says “zero trans fats,” then still check the ingredients list before you put the item in your shopping cart. Make sure that there are no signs of hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils, which are simply other ways of saying “trans fats.” If it does contain either of those ingredients, you’re better off leaving the product on the shelf!
Saturated fat:
Just walk down any grocery aisle to confirm our obsession with foods that are low in saturated fat. We’re bombarded with so-called guilt-free options such as fat-free milk, ice cream, yogurt, breads and more. But while low-fat options have popped up on our shelves in recent years, obesity rates have exploded! Clearly, low-fat and reduced-fat foods haven’t fulfilled their promise. Part of the problem is that many of you have probably swapped the full-fat dairy and animal products in your diet with refined carbs and sugar, both of which have a tremen-
dously negative effect on your weight and overall health. Instead of eating a full-fat yogurt, you’re probably eating the fat-free version, which is typically full of added sugar that was thrown in to compensate for the lack of fat. Some of you may be so afraid of whole, natural fat that you only eat egg whites, but instead of eating the yoke you’ll take in extra fat-free bread. Now, the eggs won’t turn into fat on your body, but the bread certainly will (only if you consume large quantities of the bread, of course). So, do you want to drop weight? Do you want healthier looking skin? What about if you need to lower your cholesterol? Yes, you read it right: Eat butter, whole eggs, full-fat cheeses and use coconut oil. Start exchanging a little bit of your fat-free foods for their full-fat counterparts and see what happens. Your body will thank you! Read more on this topic in next week’s article on omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Parshas
Va’eira By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum
Parshas Va’eira opens in the middle of a dialogue between Hashem and Moshe Rabbeinu. Hashem directed Moshe to tell the b’nei Yisrael that He would redeem them from Mitzrayim, take them as His people, and bring them to the land He had promised to their fathers. Moshe did as he was instructed, but the b’nei Yisrael did not listen to him because of the strain of their hard work. Hashem then instructed Moshe to tell Paroh to let the b’nei Yisrael leave Mitzrayim. Moshe responded, “Hein b’nei Yisrael lo shamu eilai v’eich yishmaeini Paroh va’ani aral s’fasayim – behold, the children of Israel did not listen to me, so how will Paroh listen to me, and I have sealed lips.” (Shemos 6:12) The usual way this passuk is understood is that if the b’nei Yisrael did not listen, all the more so (kal v’chomer) Paroh would not listen. According to the Sfas Emes, this passuk can be understood in another way: that Paroh would not listen to Moshe because the b’nei Yisrael did not listen to him, and their not listening is what caused Moshe’s lips to be sealed. The question is, why would the b’nei Yisrael not listening to Moshe have any effect on whether or not Paroh would listen to Moshe? And why would
46 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W
their not listening have sealed Moshe’s lips? The Sfas Emes explains that the leaders of Klal Yisrael receive their power through the people. Therefore, what Moshe is telling Hashem in this passuk is that without Klal Yisrael’s acceptance of his leadership,
Our leaders receive the ability to lead through our acceptance of them as our leaders. he will not have the ability to stand before Paroh and influence him on their behalf. Our leaders receive the ability to lead through our acceptance of them as our leaders. On a purely physical level, it is clear that without having followers, a person cannot be a leader. Chazal say, “Ein melech blo am – there is no king if there is no nation.” On a practical level, if a classroom is empty of students,
can we call the person speaking at the front of the room a teacher? Clearly not. But this works on a much deeper level as well. If we don’t place our trust in our leaders and listen to them, they lose their koach to act on our behalf in ruchniyus and in gashmiyus. They can no longer work for us as our advocate to the governments and the nations of the world, and ultimately as our advocate with Hashem. There is a story in the Gemara (Sanhedrin) that brings out the importance of having a leader. One time, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi encountered Eliyahu HaNavi, and asked if he could accompany the navi on his journeys so he could learn from him. Eliyahu HaNavi agreed, and they set off together. They arrived in a wealthy city, and stopped to daven in the large, ornate shul. Despite the obvious wealth of the community, not a single person offered any hospitality to the strangers. They ended up sleeping in the shul, hungry from lack of food. In the morning, Eliyahu HaNavi blessed the inhabitants of the city that they should all become leaders. The two traveled on to another city. This city was not wealthy, but its residents were kind and hospitable. They
warmly provided the strangers with food and lodging. In the morning, Eliyahu HaNavi blessed this city that they should have one leader. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi asked Eliyahu HaNavi to explain, for it appeared that Eliyahu HaNavi had given the stingy city a better bracha. Eliyahu HaNavi explained that it is not a bracha that every person in the city should be a leader – just the opposite. In fact, it is one of the most destructive things that can happen to a city. To have one leader is a true blessing.
Hilchos Shabbos
Q&A
Two Halachos at a Time
Each of us needs to have a leader that we follow: a Rav or a Rebbe. Klal Yisrael needs leaders in every generation, and we are the ones who make them our leaders. If we reject our leaders, chas v’shalom, then each of us appoints ourselves as our own leader. We see from the above story that this is a curse and brings about destruction. Each of us needs to have a leader that we follow: a Rav or a Rebbe. It says in Pirkei Avos 1:6, “Aseh l’cha Rav. – Make for yourself a Rav.” There are many explanations on this wording, but in light of this week’s Parsha, we can read this in another way. Make yourself a Rav - by placing your trust in him, and listening to him. By becoming his follower, you give him the koach to lead. May each of us give our community’s leaders our full backing.

Q A
May I use binoculars on Shabbos? It is brought down in the sefer Menucha Nechuna, in the name of the Chazon Ish, that binoculars are not muktza, because there is no melacha involved; they may even be adjusted on Shabbos.
Q A
How can I make my child’s peyos on Shabbos without violating the Halacha? One may wet the peyos under a faucet and use the hands to make them look neat. One may not form the peyos or squeeze them; neither is one allowed to brush them or even use the fingers to comb them. Using substances such as lemon juice etc. to stiffen them is likewise not permitted. Feel free to submit your short Hilchos Shabbos questions to comments@ themonseyview.com

POPPED VENTURE As told to Baila Reider
Only fifteen years old and already an entrepreneur! I was jumping for joy at the prospect. Since I am the oldest in a family that prides itself on its financial success, attained through shrewdness, hard work, (and, of course, help from Above) - I felt like this was my ticket to adulthood.
mouth texture, yet silky-smooth surface. I lined the granite countertop with the ingredients, purchased with my own money, of course (business is business, as Mommy said), and preheated the oven. The marathon then started; flour sifted, eggs cracked, sugar measured. I was on a roll and enjoying every minute of it. I looked on in satisfaction as four trays of molds were filled with precisely measured batter. Thirty six of them were for the Sheinfeld Bas Mitzvah on Monday, and I’d planned for 12 spares to leave room for error and tasting. While the oven was doing its job, I was doing mine... It was no picnic cleaning flour and batter off all the surfaces where they had creatively landed. But, a job is a job, and cleanup was part of the deal. I put away the rags just as the timer beeped, signaling that the pops were ready. I impatiently waited while the cake pops took their merry time cooling off; I was itching to start dipping them into peach and aqua chocolate, and then shower them with the expensive edible glitter. (Nobody ever called my mother conventional when it came to color combinations.) I busied myself with the double boilers, and twirled each stick until all 48 balls were coated to perfection in their destined color. I spent two whole hours puttering with the glitter, forming neat polka dots all around, and shooing them away when they landed elsewhere. My mother was duly impressed when she walked into the kitchen as I was tying a min-
I stared at the bills in my hand, as reality hit me. Hard. My father is the owner of a handful of successful businesses in the center of Monsey, and has all ten fingers stuck into an assortment of projects and committees. My mother is a party planner strictly for those who want to make a statement; she will not accept an event if a price quote is even requested before a commitment. Working with a limitless budget is her only way. Creative like my mother, and forever brimming with moneymaking ideas, I was delighted by the notion of occupying myself in a way that combined the two. When my mother complained that she had a hard time finding miniatures that have a reliable hashgacha to match her color schemes, I offered her a proposition: I would bake cake pops according to her specifications, and she would buy them from me for her events at the price of $1.50 a pop. Sunday 1:15 pm, only minutes after dismissal from school, found me in the midst of preparations for my first batch of professional cake pops. I’d tested four different recipes over the course of the previous week and ended up combining two to achieve that melt-in-your-

I knew you would do a nice job, but you’ve far exceeded my expectations!” My mother beamed. I beamed back, and gushed to my mother how exciting it was to join the business world. I then finished tying the remaining bows, and boxed my labor of the past four hours into an airtight container before placing it out of the sight of my younger siblings.
* * * On Monday evening, I eagerly awaited my mother’s arrival home. When I had called her some 15 minutes earlier, she told me that she was wrapping up all the loose ends at the Garden Paradise where she’d had a party that night, and should be home within the hour. “I’m home,” my mother’s voice chimed out as she entered the front door. folder to…” “Look at the totals,” I interrupted her mid-sentence, “I ended up spending on the ingredients more than you paid me.” “Reizy,” she gently said. “You knew of the arrangements before you shopped. You should have either asked for a better price before agreeing, or shopped within your budget.” Her words stung, because they were true. I so badly wanted to do a perfect job, that I did not allow monetary calculations to dictate any of my shopping choices. After much back and forth with a party of family members, including my mother, father, and grandfather, it was decided that my mother will not pay me more, and I should take it as a lesson in budgeting. It hurt. Now, six months later, I can say that it was a smart move. No, I did not become frugal, but I have become much more aware of what money is all about. $9.72 was a small price to pay for a lesson so powerful. And my business venture? I now have a profitable relationship with my mother. She buys cake pops from me at $2.50 a pop, and she says they’re worth every cent.

They tied everything in so nicely. I’m telling you, nobody would dream that they were done by a teenager!” my mother handed me her phone for a peek. “Oh, and this is for you,” she said offhandedly as she peeled some bills off the wad in her purse. I took both with equal excitement. In the picture, the table layout looked grand, as befit an affair arranged by none other than my own mother. I was extremely pleased when I noticed that my cake pops took center stage on the laden table. I then stared at the bills in my hand, as reality hit me. Hard. $54 were scrunched into my fist. Recap: Malka’la gifts her mother with a linen set. They get ready for the big wedding day.
THIRTY ONE DUVID’S STORY: My daughter was getting married. I stood arm in arm with her chassan, to bring him to their chuppah. The Jerusalem sky was still a deeply lit blue, and from afar, the hills of dust and dunes glistened with each individual’s story. It occurred to me that the hills were smooth. From my vantage point, I couldn’t be sure where people live and where they hoped to live, where houses started and people ended, or even where the flowers were growing in hedges in their yards. And this wedding; it was just like that. From where I stood, linking arms with my new son, the prince to whom I was entrusting my daughter, you couldn’t tell the minutiae that had amounted in the struggles that now seemed merely a dusty hill. But they were there. They had happened, and they had shaped the landscape of who we are. I knew the landscape though. The fear, lurking in every cell inside me. And the vulnerability. The awe.

ing her toward her new home, a small swatch of cloth under the wide open skies, anywhere she and her husband found themselves. And there, toward the edge of the sea of people, aunts, cousins, siblings, was a young man in a sharp, very modern getup. His pants were many shades lighter than most of our guests’, and not from dust. His shirt was decorated with many sewn-on accessories. On his back, a rifle. He was standing with his back to the chuppah, with a group in army fatigues. Small, shaven peyos adorned his face. My Avrumy. I couldn’t see, I couldn’t be sure about this young sprig who looked wholly out of place. When he lit up a cigarette and turned around slightly, I could see. I wasn’t imagining things. In all the weeks leading up to the wedding, I hadn’t seen him once, as he was in yeshivah. Had he not been in yeshivah? Did I know nothing about him joining the army? Was I so consumed with other matters pressing my heart that I never found out the truth?

Now the kallah was coming under her chuppah, flanked by her dear mother and her mother-inlaw, taking poised steps toward where we were standing, toward building the seven walls of her new home. It was Avrumy. I could see now that he was peering closely at his sister, her beautiful face veiled, her footsteps enrobed in a gown of shimmering purity. It was Avrumy. So that was it. That’s what had happened to him in the few seconds, or rather months, in which I hadn’t been looking in his direction. Children, like plants, needed watering daily or they wilt, change colors, lose their youthful greenness, and rot, rot into brown, unrecognizable form, throw off all vestiges of life. I lost him, because I didn’t attend to him. And there, at the other side of the chuppah crowd, sat Chuna’s wheelchair, his head lolling onto his shoulder, his mouth agape, a thread of drool hanging all the way to his collar. And here, Malka’la was taking her first steps in

And how do I know, when I see my daughter leaving the nest where she was born, that You will be there to hold her when she falls? I knew now what I was praying for. “Tatte. Tatte.” It tore so, so deep. I shuddered. The mesader kiddushin was here. He paused meaningfully. I pulled my shuddering limbs into myself. I willed myself to still my cries. The tears did not abate, falling stream-like, into my beard. They say that under the chuppah, ten generations of ancestors join in the building of a new family. I imagined my father, and my zeide. I felt them supporting me at the shoulders, looking on with dispassionate, if compassionate eyes. I felt them with me, or I would have fallen apart. She was looking at her new chassan with such fresh, beautiful eyes, that for a moment, all I could do was step back, step out of the ring of holiness that seemed to envelop them, and simply observe. She saw me and flung herself at me. We embraced. “Thank you, Tatte,” she said. “I hope I can build a home like yours.” And again, the tears. I hoped she could do more, better. “You can. VitalOne Defies the Odds
Saving Vacationer’s life with Emergency Medevac from Cuba to Miami By: Shoshana Bernstein Professionalism, medical expertise and timeliness were all in high gear this past weekend as VitalOne defied the odds and executed a politically and logistically complicated emergency Medevac from Havana, Cuba to Miami. It is safe to say that when Mrs. X left Israel for her much anticipated family getaway in Cuba she never envisioned returning by way of an elaborate airborne ICU taking up the entire first class cabin of El Al airlines. The 70 year old woman’s vacation took an unexpected and potentially deadly turn when she collapsed Thursday morning in the lobby of her Cuban hotel. The victim of a sudden stroke, she was rushed to Cuba’s severely substandard hospital where it was determined that she had suffered an intracranial hemorrhage. “I got the call Friday morning,” explains Isaac Leider, dubbed Rabbi 911™ for his world-renowned success in dealing with air medical trans-

ports. “There was no way the patient was going to survive in a Cuban hospital. The logistics for the 60 minute flight from Havana to Miami are always complicated. This time the complications were tenfold.” Due to the holiday weekend, there was no one available to sign off on the necessary permits which would allow VitalOne to send an ICU jet to land in Cuba. Furthermore, assuming the Cuban airport handler could be reached and the permits secured, there were no beds available at any tertiary care (top medical) facility in Miami. Without an ICU bed assignment, the medical parole visa would not be approved. No challenge is too great for the VitalOne team. They began reaching out to their high level contacts, amongst them a ‘black card carrying’ philanthropist, who requested anonymity. With just one call to the CEO of Baptist Hospital in Miami, a bed was procured. But the challenges kept coming. For inexplicable reasons,
Cuban immigration officials put a 24 hour hold on granting permission for the VitalOne jet to land and pick up the patient. Isaac contacted the Israeli Foreign Ministry Situation Room but needed someone in the United States with the ability to secure the permit to land. Enter Mr. Michael Wildes, Esq.; a well known immigration attorney and former federal prosecutor. “I’ve worked with Isaac Leider on many occasions. When I see Rabbi 911™ on my caller ID, I know it is a matter of life or death,” explained Mr. Wildes, who returned my call while on vacation in Mexico. “VitalOne was facing a bureaucratic glitch and with no one available to countermand this order, there was a good chance the patient would not live.” Michael Wildes, former mayor of Englewood, New Jersey and a 23 year veteran of Hatzalah, spent the next several hours working the phones well into Friday night, along with Isaac, to save this Jewish woman’s life. A board member of NORPAC (a political action committee working to improve Unites States and Israel relations) he reached out to Dr. Ben Chouake, the President of the organization, who in turn contacted Senator Menendez’ Chief of Staff, whom he has known for twenty years. Mr. Wildes credits Isaac, who he dubs ‘an angel’ with doing a great job of smoothing the way, arranging for an available bed, collecting the proof needed for a medical parole visa, verifying that the patient would not become a medical charge in the Unites States and a burden to the taxpayers (traveler’s insurance is covering 100%), and securing the written assurances that there was no other medically mandated option to save this woman’s life. The situations was further
complicated since the patient is Israeli, and Israel has no diplomatic relationship with Cuba. Mr. Wildes reached out to United States Congressman Ed Royce of California who serves as the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Congressman Royce jumped into action; personally making calls to various State Department officials to help secure the permits. “This was a truly heartwarming instance of partisan efforts. These are busy politicians who stepped in and used their time and contacts to affect a positive outcome. Everyone appreciated the fact that we were Observant Jews, nonetheless on the phones on Shabbos, committed to saving a life. VitalOne leads by example and I tip my hat to everyone who helped make this
Medevac possible.” By Shabbos morning, permission was granted and a bed waiting in the Miami hospital. The ICU jet landed in Cuba with a medical team and all the equipment necessary to safely fly the patient, at sea level, to Miami. Seventy-two hours later, thanks to life-saving surgical intervention, VitalOne was once again on the scene, flying her via air ambulance to Newark Airport where they had turned the entire first class cabin of an El Al flight into a completely retrofitted airborne ICU. VitalOne was able to repatriate the patient where she will receive further care from Professor Zvi Ram at Tel Aviv’s Sourasky Medical Center. Thanks to VitalOne’s experience and know-how, they were able -- with G-d’s help and the
dedicated assistance of the various people involved-- to get this patient the emergency medical care she needed to survive, all at no cost to the family; VitalOne procured insurance coverage for everything. Proving once again how fitting the name VitalOne is for a team of medical transport experts that is considered the number one choice of doctors around the world, when vital air transport is needed to save a life. Author’s note: VitalOne maintains the importance of choosing your vacation spot with a potential medical crisis in mind. At the very least, make sure your insurance provides for medical transport and/or purchase additional insurance when you book your flight. You never know.

Super Supper Sandwiches
Sandwiches are my go-to supper whenever I have chicken defrosted but no idea what to do with it. You can never go wrong, there is no set recipe, and you use whatever you have in your house. After spending plenty of nights eating plenty of different sandwiches, I’m sharing three of my favorite results with you. Remember, the recipes are not etched in stone. Use them as basic guidelines to create your own family favorites. As long as you have an abundance of napkins, you’re good to go! Enjoy!

For those of you who hate to throw away any food, this recipe is for you. The first time I made it was when I had a net bag full of chicken bones from my chicken soup and no supper prepared. It was such a hit. Since then I put chicken bottoms into my soup special for this recipe, and it has become the weekly Thursday night supper in my house.
2 chicken bottoms or 1 bag of chicken bones from the chicken soup Âź cup sesame teriyaki sauce 4 wraps
Techina ½ bag of frozen French fries, baked Tomatoes Red cabbage
Shred the chicken off the bones and place on a cookie sheet. Pour sesame teriyaki sauce over chicken and mix until all chicken is coated. Place cookie sheet under the broiler in your oven and broil for about 10 to 20 minutes. The chicken should be browned and crispy. Keep mixing it if the edges are burning too quickly. Microwave the wrap for 10 seconds so it becomes warm and bendable. Smear techina over wrap and layer with French fries, tomatoes, red cabbage and shredded teriyaki chicken.

4 chicken cutlets, pounded thin 1 tablespoon oil 1 cube frozen garlic 1 cube frozen basil
4 pita bread or wraps 2 tablespoons storebought pesto 2 tablespoons mayonnaise Lettuce
Sour pickles, sliced Tomatoes, sliced Red onion, sliced French fried onion
Place chicken cutlets, oil and frozen cubes in a shallow bowl and let sit for about 30 minutes Place chicken cutlets on a cookie sheet and broil for about 3 to 4 minutes per side Combine pesto and mayonnaise in a plate and divide evenly among 4 pita breads or wraps. Layer pita or wrap with lettuce, sour pickles, tomatoes, red onion, chicken cutlets and French fried onions. Roll up wrap and slice on a diagonal.
I love the taste of pesto on everything. Smearing it on the pita really adds super taste to this quick and easy sandwich.

Are you tired of getting vague rejections and noncommittal answers? Do you just need that final nudge to break into print? Would you love to meet famous published authors and editors, who will share their years of experience and give you hands-on advice? If so, this event is what you’ve been waiting for. On Sunday, January 24, a unique writing workshop will take place at the Bais Rochel Hall, 145 Saddle River Road, at 8:00 p.m. This event is open to both women and high school girls for whom writing is an adventure,

How to craft compellilng personal essays, and pointers on breaking into print. Bassi, who has been at the helm of Family First for several years, knows the ins and outs of the writing world in her dreams. Come and hear firsthand what makes a good article great. Libby Lazewnik, the author of numerous bestsellers, who has been inspiring and delighting a generation of young readers for many years, will follow with her workshop on Hindsight is 20/20; and how to make your characters three-dimensional. Chany Rosengarten, beloved columnist for the Monsey View, a master at her craft, will teach the audience how to build emotion and suspense. Last but not least, selected editors from Mishpacha, Ami, Binah, and other papers will take part in a panel, answering your writing questions and explaining what their papers are looking for. This invaluable opportunity is available for only $40, by advance registration, ($50 at the door.) Please call now as space is filling up fast. The Election Process By Ruchel Lebovits
THE VICE PRESIDENT When the U.S. Constitution was originally written, it included a position for a Vice President, a backup to the president should he be injured or killed and unable to resume his duties. This was to ensure that the United states never found itself without a leader. After the vice president, there are a number of people who take over if the people ahead of them are all killed, including the Speaker of the House and some of the president’s cabinet members. In the original version of the Constitution, the man who won the elections became president and the runner-up became vice president. The position of vice president required nothing from the person, other than to have the 3 qualifications necessary to be president (35, natural born U.S. citizen, 14 years residency in the US). In the election of 1796, the Electoral College voted for a president from one party and a vice president from another. And then in the election of 1800, the votes for the top two people were tied, prompting the 12th amendment to be passed, in which the process of voting for president and vice president was changed. Now, instead of voting for president and vice president separately, they run on one party ticket. For many years the position of vice president didn’t hold much significance. Because

the job has no official duties other than being president and tie breaker in the senate, vice presidents generally were not involved in the day-today running of the country. Most of them did not even reside in Washington D.C. Over the last 100 years or so, vice presidents starting playing a more major role, some more than others, joining cabinet meetings, helping the president campaign for issues, and representing the president at important events. When it comes to choosing a running mate, or vice presidential partner, the presidential candidates generally look for two things: 1)
someone they can get along with who will not overshadow them, 2) a person that rounds out their ticket. Most candidates have limita-

As soon as candidates seriously contemplates a run for the presidency, they will start the process of choosing a potential vice president, vetting and interviewing anyone they seriously consider. Once they’ve won one or more primaries, they will narrow down their selection. When one candidate officially wins their party’s nomination, they will then formally give the job to their final choice and announce them as their running mate. At the party’s convention, they will be presented as the party’s ticket of president and vice president and will then run together to try and secure their ultimate goal of winning the general elections.

HILLARY AND HER UNNOTICEABLE SCANDALS For months now, Hillary Clinton has lead her party’s polls in the primary race. That is not surprising, given the opponents she is up against. Bernie Sanders is an unknown with nowhere near the amount of financial support that Hillary has. And Martin O’Malley has all but vanished into obscurity, never getting much of a mention at all. For all intents and purposes, Hillary’s been running unopposed. What seems more surprising is that in the national polls, against the top-tier republican candidates, she has been holding her own, despite the many scandals and missteps that have come up over all this
On Tuesday, December 29th, George Pataki, the three-term NY Governor, announced that he would no longer be seeking his party's nomination. "While tonight is the end of my journey for the White House, as I suspend my campaign for president, I am confident we can elect the right person," Governor Pataki said. "Someone who will bring us together and who understands that polititime. Starting before her announcement and continuing forward by testifying in front of Congress, the Benghazi and email scandals have continued to plague her; yet they seem to have no major impact on polls. INTRODUCTION: Practically speaking, the kitchen and dinette are the most important part of the house and are the balabuste’s domain. It is a place where mothers spend much of their day and where husbands and children find happiness and comfort. As the main hub of the house, the kitchen sees more than its fair share of traffic. Strategic planning and a well-thought-out layout are vital to the success of your kitchen.
KITCHEN TIPS: • It is important for your kitchen to be large enough to accommodate the number of people who will be using it: a practical kitchen starts at 13 to 20 feet wide by 15 to 18 feet long, plus a dinette area of 13 to 18 feet wide by 10 to 15 feet long. • The ideal place to enter your kitchen is between the cooking and eating areas. This allows you to maintain the space as two separate entities, keeping your dinette clean while you cook. If your kitchen layout doesn’t allow for this configuration, then place your dinette at the far end of the kitchen to minimize clutter, ensuring that at least one area of your kitchen stays clean and orderly at any given time. • When placing an island in your kitchen, you need a minimum of 42 inches of space on all sides to accommodate those who are using the island, as well as others who are passing through. • If you are building a house from scratch, consult with a kitchen designer at the beginning of the architectural planning process to coordinate the best locations for windows. Once windows have been installed, their placement limits the function and layout of your kitchen. • If it is difficult to find room for windows in a kitchen, placing windows above cabinets and counters is another way to get more light. Having large windows in the dinette is a great focal point, and besides, the two areas can always share the sunshine! • Lighting has a tremendous impact in your kitchen. Fixtures above the sinks and ranges, and over-the-cabinet soffit lighting will bathe your kitchen in a soft glow. Have an island in your kitchen? Pendants are a fabulously stylish choice to illuminate the area. Plan ahead and create a lighting plan as soon as your kitchen design is finalized so that your fixtures are situated in the right place, and make sure that your fixtures flow and have a purpose.
76
FRONT KITCHEN PROS: • You have a better view of your children as they play outside with friends and neighbors in front of your house. • Being able to see the school bus coming, both in the morning and in the afternoon, giving you the ability to wait indoors but still be out on time to get your little ones on or off the bus. • Having the ability to drop things off easily in your kitchen as soon as you get home. • On those days that you are home alone or are spending most of your time busy in the kitchen you get to be entertained by the bustle of the street.
Suri Israel is the president of architectural design at HPDesign. Suri will customize your dream home in a practical and fashionable way according to your needs and budgets. LOCATION: While kitchens are typically placed either in the front or the back of the house, there are always exceptions and times when it make more sense to situate your kitchen in the center of your house, such as on a long, narrow property, when logic dictates that both the front and rear rooms be used for other purposes. What is the best placement for your kitchen? There are pros and cons to consider.
BACK KITCHEN PROS: • Guests get to see the nicest rooms of your home (dining room/living room) and your family gets to use the comfortable rooms (kitchen/family room), as it should be. • Additional privacy and minimal street noise. • Having more flexibility in planning your dinette by being able to bump out a nook and add extra windows. • Being able to watch your kids playing in the backyard while you cook. • In the summer, you can put your kids in a kiddie pool on your porch while keeping an eye on them from the kitchen. • Being able to eat outside with your family in nice weather while still enjoying some privacy.
BACK KITCHEN CONS: • Not being able to see the school buses as they come to pick up/drop off your kids • Not being able to watch your kids while they are playing out front. • Experiencing a sense of isolation when you look outside and don’t see anyone.
FRONT KITCHEN
FRONT KITCHEN CONS:
BACK KITCHEN
• People passing by your house can see right into your kitchen. • Street noise can interfere with family time. • Anyone who comes into your house has a full view of your kitchen, which you might not appreciate on those hectic days. • Not having easy access from your kitchen to your back porch.

CLEANING TIPS Although cleaning a kitchen is commonly compared to shoveling snow while it’s still snowing, it’s something we womenfolk spend a big chunk of our lifetime doing. Here are some tips to make the job a little easier. • Do you have a hard time getting rid of the hard water stains that Rockland’s “hard water” leaves on your sinks? Try this product, available at Home Depot and Walmart: CLR Bath and Kitchen Cleaner. Vinegar usually also does the job, without the harmful chemicals. • If you have copper or brass fixtures in your kitchen that are tarnished, try removing the tarnish with ketchup. Dab some onto a soft cloth and gently rub. Then rinse with warm water. • If your hand doesn’t fit down a narrow vase or decanter, fill it halfway with water and drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets. It will make it cleaner than ever before. Alka-Seltzer is also great for giving drains a deep cleaning. • Clean your blender by putting in a little water and a drop of dish soap into the pitcher right after it was used. Put it back on the blender, and turn it on for 20 seconds. All you need to do is rinse it and you’re done. Similarly, an immersion blender should be immersed and turned on in a cup of water and some soap. • The quickest way to clean a microwave oven is to place a handful of wet paper towels inside and run it on High for 3-5 minutes. The steam from the towels will soften the grime. Once the paper towels cool down, use them to wipe the oven's interior. • To remove water marks and make your pots and pans like new, wash them with sour salt.
82 / T HE MO NS E Y V IE W
PRESERVING FOODS’ FRESHNESS On average, a typical family wastes at least $1,000 of food per year. Here are some tips to make sure your family reaches nowhere near that. • Do you find that cut-up vegetables become soggy in the refrigerator overnight? Place a paper towel in a container over a salad, cut-up vegetables, or lettuce and then cover the container. The paper towel will absorb the moisture, leaving the vegetables crisp and fresh. Paper towels are also great for lining your crisper drawer, as it prolongs shelf life by absorbing the moisture that causes vegetables to rot quickly. • In order to make cottage cheese or sour cream last longer, place the container upside-down in the fridge. Inverting the tub creates a vacuum that inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes food to spoil. • To prevent salt from hardening, place a few grains of rice into your salt shaker.
IMPROVISING IN THE KITCHEN Sometimes all it takes is a bit of resourcefulness to make life a little easier and exciting. • Turn any cup into a travel cup by wrapping Glad’s Press n Seal to seal the top and insert a straw. The kids will love it and the car will be less sticky. • For the preparation-free healthiest ice cream, slip a pop stick through the foil of a small yogurt and into the yogurt and freeze. When frozen, remove foil cover, pop out, and watch the kids enjoy them. It can even be breakfast in a pinch. • If you ever need to roll out a dairy dough, and want to keep your (only) rolling pin pareve, a glass wine bottle does the trick, although find out if it has to be toiveled prior to use.

With the right tricks, daunting tasks can sometimes become so simple.

There is a lot of science behind this, but the easiest way to explain why this works is because the spoon pops a lot of the bubbles once they come into contact with it, and it also absorbs some of the moisture. Apparently, metal spoons don’t work because they heat up too fast. It’s worth a try! • Want to bake challos on Erev Shabbos without making a mess? Buy pre-sifted flour, cover your table with a plastic tablecloth, and place the base of your Bosch into a garbage bag, making a hole for where the bowl connects. At the end of this process, all you’ll have to do is wash the bowl, the beaters, and a measuring cup.

Well, Hello Winter! It’s finally here, and with it comes thick winter coats, cozy hats, toasty shawls, and of course, snuggly gloves! What would we do without those essential digit-warmers on the coldest of days? Gloves have a long history of service to mankind, and it’ll be continuing throughout this winter for sure. So, grab your gloves and walk your fingers down the page…
FAST FACTS • Gloves have long been a symbol of status. Throughout the ages, common folk wore simple deer or sheepskin gloves, while the upper class citizens of high society wore gloves that were heavily embroidered or decorated with precious metals and stones. • Gloves were considered such an important aspect of society throughout history that: • Gentlemen were expected to change their gloves six times a day. • Various colors and fabrics were considered socially appropriate for different events. • Proper ladies were expected to wear gloves ‘round the clock - both inside and outside of the home. • In the middle ages there was a tradition to eat while wearing special finger-gloves, which were placed on the tips of the fingers, sort of like thimbles. Likewise, the Romans ate with their hands, also wearing
86
/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W
gloves during mealtime. I wonder how they ate soup… • The first time gloves were ever worn during surgery was in the late 1880’s, and only then because a nurse complained of antiseptic chemicals bothering her hands. Come to find out, it was a fantastic step in the right direction… Before then, infection-related death after an operation was a huge risk, earning hospitals the macabre nickname “houses of death.” Upon using gloves however, mortality rates plummeted, and doctors realized that gloves were a simple but necessary step in saving lives. • Do latex gloves make you itch? If you have an allergy to latex, you might also find that avocado, chestnut, kiwi, and banana make you start scratching. The above listed foods (as well as others) share a similar protein to latex, and many times if one is allergic to one, she may also be allergic to the others.

CREATIVE USES
GLOVES IN HALACHA • If one is unable to wash before eating bread due to a wound on their hand, one should wear gloves, or refrain from touching the bread and make the bracha hamotzi without washing. • One should remove their gloves- along with other outerwear- before beginning to pray, because one does not stand before an important person dressed in such a manner; much less before the King of all kings. • A kallah should not wear gloves under the chuppah, due to the fact that there should be no obstruction between the ring and her actual finger.
• Don’t throw out those old single gloves! Use these great tips to make the most of what you’ve got. • Dampen a soft glove and while wearing it, use it to polish blinds, plants, and other delicate surfaces. When done, just wash the glove with the shmattes. • Cut old rubber gloves into strips; they make fantastic heavy duty rubber bands! • To prevent tipsy-topsy brooms, snip the finger off of a rubber glove and slide it over the end of your broom handle to give it extra traction. • In a pinch, use the tip of a plastic glove as a stand-in for a lost bottle cover.

Things That Go “VROOOM” By: Ruchy Reese
Auto issues handled by Chaverim
It was a cold winter’s eve and the heat had long gone out of the car. The frigid rain pelted the window pane, and the small children began whimpering, hungry and in need of a restroom. Mrs. Kohn* could only look at her brood with pity in her eyes. It was a miracle that they were even alive! It had been a harrowing day for the Kohns, who had set out on a family trip with a car service at 6 am, not realizing that a safety warning would go in affect shortly after their departure. Slowly they inched along, not knowing that black ice had settled all along the highway, making the way treacherous. The Kohn family however, hadn’t heard the warning until it was too late. By then, the hired minivan had careened out of control and had flown into a ditch. Emerging from the van shaken but unhurt- the Kohns looked around them in shock. Cars were piled up on either side- burning heaps of mangled metal. It was many hours before the tow truck arrived, and night had nearly descended. Finally, the truck arrived and the driver hoisted the van into the air- the Kohn’s hanging on inside for dear life. They were taken to an auto compound, where, with a snarl, the owner of the compound left the family to fend for themselves, as he headed home for the evening. In the middle of nowhere, in freezing weather, with no help in sight- the situation seemed hopeless. To make matters worse, the unsympathetic owner locked the gate behind him, sealing the Kohn family inside. Now they stood with tears streaming down their faces, not knowing where to turn. The youngest child was but an infant, and who knew how long the children would be able to survive the wet, frigid weather? It had already been many hours since they’d last eaten and had access to the facilities. Finally, the Kohn’s remembered Chaverim. After placing a quick call, they were assured that help was on the way. Shortly thereafter, four volunteer cars arrived, having braved the black ice, to take the family to safety. First however, the family had to be evacuated. One by one the children were handed over the fence, and those who were able, climbed out to safety. Mrs. Kohn however was not capable of climbing the fence. Selfless as usual, a devoted unit circled the entire compound in deep slush to find the easiest point of exit for the lady of the family. As soon as she was out the family was taken to their doorstep back home in Monsey, now staunch supporters of Chaverim.
Exactly one year ago from the date of this week’s publication a family was rescued by Chaverim from inside a locked auto compound.

Unfortunately, car related issues frequently happen, although most are not as drastic as tragic accidents and the subsequent events. Sometimes a car simply needs a boost, a tire patch, a little air, or perhaps the owner needs help finding the car in a large parking lot. Whatever the case, most people know exactly whom to call. It’s common knowledge that Chaverim is highly active in the automotive department. In fact, most newcomers to the Monsey com-
A member will smilingly fill your tank with enough fuel to take you to the nearest gas station and will then send you on your way. Don’t be surprised however, when you’re asked for $20 in remuneration. To many people it comes as a surprise that a volunteer organization charges for a service. The answer however, makes perfect sense. “We ask for twenty dollars in order that the responding member shouldn’t have to pay

Although Chaverim stands ready to perform almost any type of chesed, the most common calls that come in are usually related to four-wheeled machines and their passengers. While car problems can appear in many forms, there are certain types that continuously pop up. Let’s learn more about what Chaverim is most commonly known for.
OUT OF GAS Have you ever had the misfortune to get stuck in the middle of the road somewhere, only to glance down at the gas gauge and see the hand pointing to the big red “E”- leaving you feeling totally irresponsible and helpless? Well, rest assured that you’re not the only one. In fact, it happens multiple times daily, and a Chaverim volunteer won’t think twice about it when they come to help you.
money from his own pocket to supply the gas and the container,” Mr. Yossi Margaretten - Chaverim Coordinator (Unit 28) tells me when I interview him for the scoop on car-related issues. “The total price is then rounded up, in order that people

should not use Chaverim as a free refueling station. There are also times that people can be negligent, and the $20 serves as way to remind them to be on top of their gas gauge.” Sometimes it happens that a Chaverim member will arrive anticipating an empty gas tank, but upon inspection will discover that only a boost is required. A quick visit from a trusty starter pack, and you’ll be good to go. That boost or bit of gas can really mean the difference between life and death sometimes. One abnormally freezing day a call came in that a car had run out of gas on the highway, and the car was turning into an icebox. Dispatching gave out the call as an emergency situation and volunteers ran to their vehicles to help the man in need. By the time they reached him, he was already experiencing symptoms of hypothermia. Thankfully, due the dedicated volunteers- a tragic ending was averted.
FLAT TIRE/ NEEDS AIR If the path of life could be measured by the number of tires serviced, then Chaverim’s come a long way indeed. With a grand total of 4,814 tires serviced since the beginning of 2015 alone, you can easily consider Chaverim competition for AAA. Except Chaverim does it for it free! Upon arrival, a member will assess whether the tire needs air, a patch, or to be swapped out for a spare. Many new cars however, do not come with

STUCK IN TRAFFIC Nobody likes to be stuck; definitely not in traffic. Thankfully, there’s Chaverim. When traffic hits on erev Shabbos even the best laid plans can go awry. When cars are bumper to bumper and the zman is steadily approaching, there isn’t much that one can do to relieve the tension in the air, other than daven, and call Chaverim, of course. It’s usually those short winter afternoons when the calls come pouring in. Panic stricken families watch the minutes tick by, every second bringing them closer to candle lighting, but not closer to their destination. Chaverim understands what this means, and every unit is caught up in the drama, seeking various ways to help. One member will call each driver and try guiding him through different routes and shortcuts to escape the gridlock. Other members will be bustling about, procuring lodging and meals for those that’ll be spending Shabbos in Monsey. Under the guidance of the local dayan, special units of non-Jews may be deployed to drive the vehicles to Monsey if it’s too close to the zman. Every unit will be offering up a tefilah for the safe and quick arrival of our co-religionists before Shabbos Hamalkah makes her appearance. The relief of those families when they arrive at their lastminute lodging in Monsey is palpable, knowing that chillul Shabbos was narrowly averted by a large dose of Siyata Dishmaya- expressed through the help of Chaverim.

spares. In addition, there are times that multiple wheels may obtain a flat- although the car only holds one spare. What then is a person to do? Never fear: enter the Monsey Tire Gemach! Chaverim started this division about 2 years ago after realizing the need for spare spares to help a truly stranded person. Dedicated members began collecting tires from junk cars and collision shops and stored them to give on loan. It’s a complex project to match up tires with the correct make and model of the vehicle in question, as the tires needed can vary from year to year. To date there are around 200 tires in stock, and a member will bring you the tire, install it, and let you drive off with it- on the sole condition that the tire is returned to Chaverim after the car is fixed.
STUCK IN SNOW When it snows heavily, it is desirable for people to stay put, in order to minimize accidents and the risk of a vehicle becoming entrenched in snow. There are, however, times when a person must head out for a vital doctor visit or the sort and transportation is nearly impossible to come by. In such an instance, Chaverim will transport the patient safely to his destination. But that’s not all that Chaverim does on a snow day; in fact, the phones are usually ringing off the hooks when the weather is fierce.
Its then that a triage system comes into play, with dispatchers evaluating each call to determine which is most urgent. Many people don’t know how to drive in snow, and can find themselves deeply entrenched in that fluffy white stuff. It’s even happened to busloads full of children. Then Chaverim comes along, enters their car, and but seconds later extracts it from a snow bank. Sometimes though, various tools and techniques are required to be used- such as attaching a chain to another vehicle to pull the car. Chaverim refrains from using these methods unless a car is deeply stuck, because of the potential risk of damaging the car or surroundings. In general, Chaverim won’t remove a car from the snow during a storm, unless a passenger is completely stranded. Somebody seeking a joy ride in the falling snow certainly doesn’t qualify for car-shlepping services. If however, the snow has finished, or there is a valid reason for needing the car, and every technique has been tried without
Chaverim Tip: Be proactive by maintaining your tires: Check if they need to be replaced before the winter or when visiting a mechanic. You don’t want to get stuck!
Beautiful Boutique Exclusive Brands Individualized Attention Kallah Discounts result, a member will help to remove the vehicle. It is Chaverim protocol for the assisting member to request a waiver to be signed by the person he is pulling out. Although Chaverim always tries to be careful, if unintentional damage happens, the caller should be aware that he consented to the risk.
PROTOCOL Chaverim is a team of truly dedicated individuals. My own husband (Unit 83) has a virtual mechanic shop in the back of his van. There you will find an electric compressor, jacks, and an entire chest of various gizmos that I couldn’t even begin to fathom their use. He, or any other volunteer, is thrilled to be able to perform the chesed of changing or pumping air into your tire, or helping in any other way possible. With the right combination of tools and know-how, a Chaverim member might be able to save you a lot of money, time, and agmas nefesh. There are times, however, that as much as a Chaverim member may want to help you - he will have to refuse due to the dangerous location of the vehicle- such as on the lane of a very busy street. If the road in question is located in Monsey, Chaverim might gather enough members to block off the road while the car is being attended to. On a dangerous part of a highway however, Chaverim protocol is to politely refuse assistance. Not too long ago, a car broke down on the highway and summoned Chaverim. When a member arrived, he noticed the dangerous position of the car and asked the driver to inch the car towards the shoulder. The driver refused, and as per protocol, the Chaverim member walked away without helping. The volunteer had just driven away when another automobile crashed into the car that the owner refused to move - sending the driver for an extended stay in the hospital. Baruch Hashem, the driver is now back on his feet; the car however, was totaled. Due to the incredible timing, it was a tremendous reminder that “the shliach of a mitzvah is protected from all harm.” Baruch Hashem most stories end happily at Chaverim, because the incredible power of chesed protects them ‘round the clock. We had so much fun designing and creating these trendy key chains! Whether you are an experienced clayer, or have never tried clay before, this new twist combines two favored classics and is a great family project that can be adapted for all ages. Even a threeyear-old can join in the fun!
• • • •
You will need: Sculpey (oven bake) clay • Plastic knife/Cookie cutters Perler beads • Keychain/magnet (optional) Rolling pin • Glaze (optional) Parchment paper
EXPERIMENT with mixing colors to get fun color combinations! Try matching your clay to your briefcase or pencil case. • For burgundy, add some brown to red. • For luggage add brown to red and yellow. • To marbleize, use burgandy (red+brown) and pink (white+red). Roll each color into strands and place the strands alongside each other. Roll them all together until they are slightly mixed, and then roll out the clay to make your shape.
THE TAG SHAPE, To make
cut the clay into a rectangle. At one end, cut off the two corners, then punch a hole at the top with a straw. Use a plastic knife to make a dotted line around the tag.
3
Using the plastic knife, lightly sketch the design you choose to make with the Perler beads onto the clay. Some ideas: Your initial, name, smiley, etc.
1
Play with the clay a bit to soften. Using the rolling pin, roll out clay about ¼ inch thick onto parchment paper.
2 Use a cookie cutter or cup to cut out a shape, or use the knife to cut your own design.
4
Arrange the beads on your design, with the beads touching one another. When you like the way it looks, press the Perler beads as deep into the clay as possible.

To add the keychain, gently lift your clay and place it face down. Take a small piece of extra clay of the same color and form a ball. Flatten it into a circle. Place the keychain onto the big piece of clay and cover it with the small clay circle. Press down lightly all around to attach it. Turn the clay back over.
Place the parchment paper with the clay in a disposable pan, and bake at 300 degrees for 15 minutes, or until the beads start to melt. Don’t forget to set a timer for this part! Remove the clay from the oven, and let cool completely.
If you punched a hole in your clay before baking, you can now insert a snap ring (a ring that opens and closes) and then slide in the keychain.

Create
JEWELRY by punching a circle before baking. When finished, thread a matching ribbon through the hole!
For a finishing touch, use a glossy sealer like Mod Podge Gloss to brush over the clay. Coat it a few times to give it that extra shine.

Credit Refresh
by Ann Zeilingold Mortgage commitments and mortgage commitment dates are a key focus when purchasing a home. The realtor, attorney, borrower and lender are laser focused on adhering to these dates. But once the file is committed. buyers waiting to close on a mortgage should avoid doing anything that might change their credit picture until after the documents are signed and the money is delivered. Borrowers may assume that the lender is satisfied with their financial status once their loan has been approved. But since 2010, Fannie Mae has required lenders to recheck a borrower’s credit right before closing the mortgage. And if new liabilities pop up, the loan may be delayed or even canceled. In our office, we tell our clients about this upfront, and keep reminding them through the entire process not to go buy a new bed or a refrigerator. “What you’re supposed to do is keep everything status quo.” Buying a home, you might want to buy a appliances in time for move-in day. But if your purchase shows up as a new credit card account with a $3,000 balance, the loan might be sent back to underwriting in order to redo the calculations, A new loan could potentially have a higher interest rate or you may not qualify at all. Mortgage lenders are also on the lookout for new credit inquiries. A credit inquiry from, say, Toyota signals that the borrower is probably in the process of buying a car —making that kind of large purchase is another red flag. Such purchases just before closing may not affect the loan status of the most creditworthy borrowers. Borrowers with high debt-to-income ratios, and therefore tighter finances, are the ones who need to be careful.

The maximum debtto-income ratio allowed by Fannie Mae is 45 percent (meaning that a maximum 45 percent of your gross monthly income can go to cover debt, mortgage and housing expenses). It’s more of an issue for people on the cusp of approval where they just get in under the wire. If someone was a 44 percent at the approval, if they incurred more debt at the credit refresh, and the debt goes over 45, we can’t close that loan. We had two such situations in our office in the last two months. One client got a new AMEX card. While his debt ratio was okay, we had to add the account to the credit report. Because he had never gotten a statement, we had to have the credit bureau verify the payment, and it caused a delay in the documents being sent out. Another client had student loan payments, and the refresh report had a higher payment than our original report. The higher payment was correct. The borrower had to pay off a student loan to qualify, which caused the closing to be delayed by a day, inconveniencing the seller. I have a l s o

seen the credit recheck cause problems for working couples, when only one spouse is named on the loan, usually because the other spouse has a low credit score. Basing the loan on one spouse’s income instead of two means the lender will see a higher debt-to-income ratio. In reality, the couple may easily be able to afford buying new furniture, but because the bank isn’t seeing both incomes, a rise in debt could still cause problems with
their loan before the closing. To avoid any last-minute problem, all borrowers should check with their loan officer before taking on any new debt.

?
