Cold doesn’t dampen play By Bec Eli The girls in the skirts continue to entertain and Friday night was no exception despite the cold and wind. The early games this week saw OD 2 face off with Miners 1, Miners 2 played Hornridge 2 and Hornridge 3 played Andamooka. Miners 1 and OD 2 had the pick of courts this week playing in the stadium. With the wind a factor outside the gaolies would have appreciated the indoors. From the beginning of the game Miners 1 were too strong. Weir and Peters were solid through the mid court for Miners and despite a noted effort by Edmonds in defence for OD 2 Miners took out the game with a very convincing win 53 to 17. Outside on Court 1, Miners 2 won in a thriller against Hornridge 2. The first half saw Miners 2 get out to a three goal lead which was cut to two by half time. Three quarter time and the difference was back to one in Miners favour, a small lead they

managed to hold onto, winning with a final score line of 47 to 46. Roberts played a solid game for Miners 2 while Penglase continued with her good form for Hornridge 2. The other early game between Hornridge 3 and Andamooka was a forfeit which gave Hornridge 3 the two points. The late games were both outside and saw Miners Red play Miners White and Olympic Dam 1 against Zodiacs. Miners Red are sitting at the top of the B grade ladder but they were unable to stop their other club team Miners White this week. Miners White got off to a flier in the first and went into the quarter time break with a lead of seven but by half time Miners Red had clawed back this lead to just two. White had a solid last quarter and finished up winners 33 to 28. Vears continues to be solid in defence for White. In the other late game Zodiacs

pulled out an upset over in form OD 1. Coming off a solid performance against Hornridge 1 two weeks ago, this week OD struggled and were outplayed by a neat Zodiacs unit. Zodiacs led the game in the first half and went into the half time break with a two goal lead. By the third OD 1 had reigned them in and had managed a 5 goal lead however with accurate shooting by Kiely in the fourth Zodiacs took out the win 42 to 37. Next week games are played on Saturday and will see the end of the first round for the A1 and A2 competition. Games should be interesting next week where OD 1 take on Miners 1 in the stadium, Hornridge 1 play Zodiacs and Hornridge 2 play OD 2. All of these games will be entertaining and should be fairly evenly matched. The B grade still have another two weeks in their competition for this round but next week sees Andamooka play OD 3 and Miners red play Hornridge 3.

Over the past four weeks, the Roxby Downs Junior Netball Association has been developing its players’ skills through a collection of carnivals. The Spencer Gulf Netball Carnival was held earlier this month, seeing Roxby take a group of 58 junior netballers to participate. Roxby Downs made up two 11 and Under teams, two 13 and Under teams, one 15 and Under and one 17 and Under teams. Sadly the teams failed to make it to the grand finals however officials say that the girls enjoyed the opportunity to compete against other associations. “The U11 development team went really well, playing five games, which we won two of. “We made the semi finals, losing by 7 to Pt Pirie 2 who defeated us by 12 in the first round. “The 9 girls worked well as a team, many playing out of their preferred positions. “Parents and on-lookers noted how well the team had improved as the day went on. “They were a credit to RDNA, all conducting themselves with great sportsmanship and special thanks to team manager Fiona Madigan for all of her assistance.” Three junior players also received individual awards.

Parewai Thomas received runner up best and fairest in division 1, U11, Florencia Moraga was awarded runner up best and fairest in Division 2, U11 and Hannah Rigden received runner up best and fairest in Division 1, U13. The Junior Netball Association would like to thank all coaches and umpires for donating their time. Chloe Barrand, Maddison Rhodes, Hannah Wurfel and Meg Rasheed, who are members of the Spencer Academy Squad trained on Sunday May 31 at Whyalla for places in the Spencer Academy teams. Over the June long weekend, two teams, U13 and U15, competed in the Adelaide Country Championships. “Roxby competed against many association teams with much bigger populations than our own,” said U13 coach Tony Weir. “The girls competed extremely well in all games, winning two games, drawing one and losing one by a goal. “Three other games were contested well, with one being below par.” Tony also makes special mention to the three players from last year’s U11 team who competed for the first time in U13. “Meg Rasheed, Alex Lowe and Erica Syversten, all played well in their first taste of U13 competition,” he said.

“All in all the girls had a great weekend and thanks must go to Michelle Casserly for her tireless efforts organising a trip of this size.” Unfortunately the U15 team had less luck in the carnival, managing only one win and losing five games. The players were also given the opportunity to watch the Thunderbirds in action on the Saturday afternoon and attended the Thunderbird lockin at the Beachhouse Sunday night. “The girls were well behaved and represented Roxby well,” said Michelle Casserly. “Special thanks to our umpire Emily Traeger for a great job, coaches and team managers Tony and Kate Weir, Teresa and Kasiah Barrand and our chaperones Theresa Wurfel, Mel Rigden and Emily Traeger.” The U13 girls also played in the Regional Carnival at Port Augusta recently. Tony Weir said they had a successful weekend, winning two games and competing well in the other three. “We beat Whyalla 1 and Whyalla 2 and lost narrowly to Pt. Pirie,” said Tony. “Pt. Augusta was far too strong to run out and retained their ranking from last year. “A special mention must go to Hannah Rigden who was Runner up to Best and Fairest over the whole carnival.” www.themonitor.com.au
