Twenty-four young adults graduated this year, including nine boys and 15 girls, and while many avoided The Monitor Newspaper’s interrogation about what lays ahead due to already being on the road to schoolies, three graduates explained what they hoped to achieve in ensuing years. Fletcher Crafter, 18, has done all his schooling at Roxby Downs Area School, and decided to finish off his secondary schooling with a mix of school subjects and TAFE certificates. He studied Computer and Design, Technology, Maths for Industries and completed his mandatory Year 12 research project, as well as completing Certificate I of both Metal Fabrication and Automotive. “I’ll hopefully gain an apprenticeship or go underground,” he told The Monitor last week. Fletcher has undoubtedly been influenced by the older men in his family – his father John, who is a Fitter and Turner by trade, and older brother Spencer, who is a Boilermaker. Fletcher hopes to stay in Roxby Downs to complete his tertiary education. Eighteen-year-old Andamooka girl Naomi Perrett has attended RDAS since Year 6 and is wasting no time in starting her dream career as a Social Worker, even if it means moving away from home. Naomi studied Psychology, English Communications, Maths Applications, Home Economics and completed her Research Project

in Year 12, but in a twist from traditional schooling, completed her Psychology classes through Open Access. While Naomi felt more confident in her studies after her Psychology exam, she did find some difficulties in studying the subject via correspondence. “The teacher we had was really good, but it was just the fact that we had one lesson a week, and there was no one there motivating me,” Naomi explained. She is moving to Adelaide later this year to be with her boyfriend, Adam, and in preparation for university acceptance next year. “I realised I wanted to do social work because I want to get involved in helping people that are at a disadvantage with their home life,” she said. Chelsea Brind, 18, like Naomi has attended RDAS since Year 6, studied a mix of TAFE and school based components to get her through Year 12. Chelsea gave herself a wide variety of subjects, including English Communications, Home Economics, a short stint in Physical Education and a Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety. Family minded Chelsea plans to take the next year off, to help her sister with her brand new twin nephews, who are due later this year. She then hopes to move to Adelaide to attend the International College of Hotel Management. “Because I like planning things, I like being organised, having my own way and it’s all about managing places, and hopefully one day I can be a wedding planner!” she said last week. “Finishing Year 12 was probably the hardest thing in my life, the most stressful, but it’s all over now, so time to celebrate!”

Chelsea Brind is looking forward to what the future holds after year 12.
