Pink Stumps Day committee members Rachel Taylor and Adam Malm are looking forward to the event next Saturday, February 18.

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he Roxby Downs Town Oval will be bathed in pink again next weekend when the Roxby Districts Cricket Association (RDCA) holds its annual Pink Stumps Day. Raising money for the McGrath Foundation, the local event has been one of the most popular and well supported of its kind across Australia - so much so that Glenn McGrath himself paid a visit here late last year.

With the local community having raised more than $90,000 in the past three years, RDCA President Adam Malm is hoping to crack the $100,000 mark this year. “It is a great event for a great cause and has been really well supported locally in the past,” said RDCA President Adam Malm. “We are hoping for a similar result this year, to see as many locals out there as possible decked out in pink.” Proceedings will kick off at 7pm on Saturday, February 18, with the Pink Stumps cricket match acting as the main event of the night.

Pink ton in sights Teams will be made up of locals as well as a yet to be determined South Australian Scorpions cricketer. “The game is always a bit of fun, the players and the crowd get a good laugh out of it,” Malm said. “Vicki Mason has done a great job rounding the teams up with the help of the committee and we are hoping the players in the sides this year will put on a bit of a show.” A giant man-made image will also be constructed again at the innings break of this year’s match, with the design to be kept a secret. “In previous years we have had

stumps, the number ten for the Pink Stumps Day tenth anniversary, along with a few other ideas,” Malm said. “We have come up with something different again this year to keep it original. “It is always a great spectacle to see the people of Roxby Downs coming together and forming the image.” An auction will take place again on the night and Malm said the RDCA committee was in the process of finalising stalls for the event. He said there would be a variety of food stalls, a merchandise stand and activities for the children.

The bar will also be operational with each of the RDCA teams volunteering their services to help out on the night. “It is great to see all the cricket teams getting behind the event, whether it be playing in the match or helping behind the bar,” Malm said. “It just shows how much this event means to everyone in the association and we are always excited to be able to share it with the Roxby Downs community.”

Fog lights causing issues

R

oxby police are urging motorists to refrain from using fog lights unless the conditions suit, with a number of local residents receiving warnings for using them at incorrect times.

At the Roxby Downs Women’s Network meeting on Sunday (back) Brenda Murray, Leisa Oliver, Ali Maleckas, Anne Potter (front) Sylvie O’Connor, Jacqui Francis, Jacinta Carr, Hayley Scrivens and Angela Thompson.

Sergeant Mel O’Donnell said there would be a local blitz on misuse of the lights in the next few weeks. She said drivers had been stopped in the past but the message didn’t seem to be sinking in. “This kind of offence can see motorists receive a fine of $293,” Sgt O’Donnell said. “It seems to be happening a lot around shift changes and the hours of night, it is causing some issues so we are urging motorists to be more conscious with their efforts.”

oxby Downs’ Women’s Network held its first event for the year, a ‘meet and greet’, on Sunday.

The network aims to “support and encourage the involvement and participation of women in community life” and, according to spokesperson Hayley Scrivens, has scope to make 2017 another great year. In the past the network has been active in organizing a range of events, guest speakers, and participating in social justice causes, and Ms Scrivens said there was an opportunity for all members to bring ideas and to the table. “All of the events and causes we support really depend on the members and their passions,” Ms Scrivens explained. “With BHP Billiton’s target of a 50 per cent female workforce, this year we are also particularly interested in looking at how we can support women going into roles that may have traditionally been held by men.” Sunday’s meeting was an opportunity for anyone interested in joining the network to come along, meet some

of the existing members, and hear about the group’s aims and possible agenda for the year. As a forum of the Roxby Downs Community Board, the Women’s Network needs to supply a committee member and a proxy to the Board for its regular meetings. “We need a committee of at least three or four people,” Ms Scrivens said. “(This includes) a chairperson – this can be a rotating chair – and a secretary to keep minutes of our meetings. “There are two types of membership to the Women’s Network; committee members who can vote, or casual members who still receive copies of the minutes and can come to meetings and events when they can.” The Women’s Network’s next official event for the year will be the annual International Women’s Day celebration on the morning of Wednesday, 8 March. Details are still to be confirmed but this is likely to be a breakfast open to the entire community to attend. “We are also looking at things like subsidized movie nights, which would start in the art gallery with champagne and canapes, and then move into the cinema,” Ms Scrivens said. “We’re also looking at daytime movie events for mums with babies. “There are also social justice causes we may support like the Walk for Freedom or other local causes – it really depends on what the members want to do. “We’d also like to explore the opportunity for networking with the other forums too.” The Women’s Network’s next meeting will be held today, Wednesday 8 March, at 4pm in the Community Hub (Roxby Central Traders Mall). Blonde to rainbow for a good cause

K

aty Frankish will continue a family tradition of community support when she joins the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave this year.

Katy, 17, is Roxby Downs’ first participant registered in the 2017 event, which seeks to raise funds for the foundation to support families facing blood cancer, as well as fund research. Blood cancer includes diseases like leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and is now the leading cause of death among children aged one-14, along with drowning. The Leukaemia Foundation says blood cancer also affects older people, particularly those aged over 55 and, while more children are surviving, almost half of adult blood cancer patients will lose their life. A year 12 student at Roxby Downs Area School, Katy also works at the Roxby Tavern and said she was inspired to join the shave by her mother, Beth, who also has a history of being involved in the event through the U.G.L.Y Bartender campaign, raising more than $3,500 in the last two years. “I thought I would do what I can do to help families that have sick members,” Katy said. “I can’t really do the U.G.L.Y because I’m under age, so this is something I’m able to do be-

cause it’s just colouring or cutting my hair.” Katy plans to put collection tins at the tavern and her school, and says the changes she will make to her hair will depend on the funds raised. “If I raise up to $500 I’m doing a temporary colour (in my hair),” she said. “If I get to $1,000 I’m planning on doing a permanent one colour, either pink or purple. But if I raise higher (than $1,000) I will do a rainbow of multi colours.” Roxby Downs has a strong history of supporting the World’s Greatest Shave, with a number of locals shaving their hair in recent years – including Deb Price, who was the second highest fundraiser in 2016 for South Australia with $11,397 raised, bringing the town’s total to $19,700 last year. Katy hopes to add as much as she can to that total for this year, and plans to live stream the colouring of her hair on Facebook. “I’m a little bit nervous, but it’s for a good cause,” she said. Registrations are now open for people interested in shaving, colouring or waxing the hair on their head, chest or face as part of the World’s Greatest Shave between March 16-19; visit www. worldsgreatestshave. com for more information.

New receptions settle in to school life WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he 2017 school year has brought 59 new, bright-eyed reception students across Roxby Downs’ two schools.

Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS) has taken on 51 while St Barbara’s Parish School has eight brand new Foundation students, which Principal Bernadette Lacey was delighted to meet last week for the first time. “I am delighted to welcome our newest and youngest students to St Barbara’s school community,” Mrs Lacey said.

“We know they are going to grow and flourish under the wonderful guidance of Mrs Peters and Mrs Giles.” RDAS Principal Steve Bennett said their new receptions had settled really well into their first week of school and he looked forward to a productive year ahead. “I am really excited about the year ahead,” Mr Bennett said. “The addition of our new staff this year will be good for all staff and bring lots of new ideas and enthusiasm and we continue to have additional enrolments.” Student numbers at RDAS have climbed to approximately 650 students.

All RDAS students and their parents will have the opportunity to meet their new teachers later this term with the usual acquaintance night being replaced by a new program called ‘Three Way Conversations”. “It will be run in week four and five when each parent will be invited to attend a meeting with the home group teacher and their child, to discuss the year ahead and set improvement goals,” said Mr Bennett. “This is a very important meeting and so it is vitally important that all parents attend.” PAGE 7 – new student, teacher for Andamooka Primary School.

Andamooka awards dedicated locals

A

crowd of around 80 people saw Andamooka volunteer Sylvia Hobbs named her town’s Citizen of the Year at Australia Day celebrations late last month.

Andamooka’s Australia Day awards ceremony took on a slightly different format this year, with six new categories announced to allow more opportunities to recognise efforts made by local residents. Mrs Hobbs has dedicated countless hours every week to the community in the past 12 months, including working with local seniors to organise the weekly Wacky Wednesday senior’s recreation day, as well as regular bus trips to Roxby Downs, Woomera and Port Augusta. She is a long serving member of the Andamooka Emergency Services and local library board and in 2016, coordinated the community Christmas Lunch on Christmas Day.

The Andamooka Community Event of the Year was presented to the Camp Oven Cookout which is staged annually by the Andamooka Hospital Auxiliary each August. This event, which serves up a traditional camp oven dinner at the historic cottages, attracts not only locals but also past residents, visitors from Roxby Downs and travellers from afar. The other regular award presented on the day was the Community Organisation of the Year Award, which was won by the Andamooka Emergency Services. The new awards presented on the day included Best New Community Event of the Year, Services to Seniors, Youth Award, the Community Wellbeing and the Good Neighbour Award. The Halloween Fun Night was named Best New Community Event, while the Services to Seniors and Youth Awards went to Whacky Wednesday’s and the Andamooka

Youth Group (AYG) respectively. Locals Bron Cunningham and Jim Holloway were named the inaugural winners of the Community Wellbeing and Good Neighbour awards. Event organising group member Gill Rowley said it had been a great day with all award winners very deserving of their recognition. “It is about giving recognition to a number of hardworking locals who have given their valuable time, skills and efforts voluntarily, to the benefit of the community,” Mrs Rowley said. “I would also like to acknowledge the many others in the community who did not receive awards in 2017, but who may be equally deserving of an award, which should encourage the community to put forward nominations in 2018.”

lympic Dam Barbarians (ODB) are looking to build on the success of their inaugural season and form a ladies’ rugby league team in Roxby Downs.

After an astonishing first season in 2016, where they took out the Spencer Gulf Rugby League’s TEC Cup, the Barbarians are again preparing to compete in the 2017 league competition – but are this year looking to add a women’s team to the mix. “We are looking to field a women’s team to play five or six games through the season against Whyalla or Adelaide before the men’s games,” ODB’s Jason Starkey said. “No experience is necessary, people of all abilities are welcome including those who are new to the game. “As long as you’re over 17, you’re welcome to come along.” The side will be coached by Wi Pitau. Players Kelly Thomson and Nicole Watson said rugby league was good fitness and great socially, and encouraged anyone keen to play to join them. Starkey said people with a range of sporting backgrounds would find the transition to rugby league easy. “Touch, netball, AFL, basketball – as long as you can catch a ball and run forward,” he said.

Preparing to play in the Olympic Dam Barbarians’ women’s rugby league side this year are (back) Nicole Watson, Jessica Coles, Amy Williams; (front): Monika Verevou and Kelly Thomson.

The ODB women’s side will look to play their first game in early April.

Monitor OPINION The

EDITORIAL By Amanda Hudson

H

ow far would you go to raise funds or awareness for a cause you believed in?

Last week I had a chat to local teenager Katy Frankish, who at just 17 years of age has joined the World’s Greatest Shave to raise funds for blood cancer research and support. Katy hopes to raise more than $1,000 so she can permanently dye her hair a multi-coloured rainbow – that’s a pretty big step if you ask me! I’m not sure I would have had the courage to do something that drastic when I was her age, but Katy seems to be taking it all in her stride. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised as we do have a history in our community of people putting themselves out there in all kinds of ways to support causes both

local and further afield. In Katy’s family, she has her mother Beth to look up to – Beth has been involved very successfully in the U.G.L.Y Bartender campaign for the last two years and raised more than $3,500. It’s a similar story with Llewellyn Secker who we featured in last week’s edition of The Monitor. Llewellyn, 14, has been nominated for a Santos Regional Service Award (as part of the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards) for her work raising funds for the RSPCA, as well as the Roxby Community Postie Bash, in recent years. Just like Katy, Llewellyn also has a family history to inspire her community involvement, with her parents a key driving force behind the postie bash and its success in supporting many worthy community initiatives and causes. It seems to me that if you grow up in a household where your parents have a strong social conscience and a desire to

help out, there’s a good chance that you will also seek to do your bit (even as a teenager!) I’ve seen this modelled in local junior sports where often - but not always - I see parents involved in a volunteering or support capacity, and their children then seem more likely to step up and help out where they can. In my personal experience I’ve seen this happen in both junior soccer and basketball locally, with teenagers helping out with scoring and umpiring/refereeing matches my children have participated in – and I know it’s the same with lots of other sports and community groups as well. It’s great to see and shows that it doesn’t have to be something as drastic as colouring your hair, there are lots of opportunities to step up help make our community great.

Youth group moving to new home WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he Andamooka Youth Group (AYG) is on the move and will relocate to a new set-up in the old Andamooka Progress and Opal Mining Association (APOMA) office in the town’s community hall.

The new area will include a quiet space, computer room and a television and games area which AYG co-ordinator Donna Waters

said would be exciting for the children. “I have been thinking about something like this for a while, an area where kids can just drop in, do some homework, use the computer space, play games in the next room and just chill out,” Mrs Waters said. “The kids are very excited, every time we are outside (the hall) they ask ‘can we go in yet?’ and I have to keep telling them it is not quite ready yet.” The AYG has been without a home since late last year when a fire cause damage to

their last home, the Andamooka Community Hall. The decision to relocate the youth group area follows discussion between APOMA and the Outback Communities Authority (OCA). The APOMA office will move to the Andamooka Town Management Committee (ATMC) building, freeing up the space for the youth group. The relocations could take place as early as this month with funding currently being sought to assist with the moves.

Currently the AYG has seven members who are making trips to Roxby Downs and Woomera to participate in organised activities and events. Mrs Waters said she was looking forward to localising the group’s activities again and was keen to see the construction of the new area. She said the group was looking for donations of old furniture, televisions or anything that may be useful in the AYG’s new space.

Sharn joins Andamooka teaching team A ndamooka Primary School has welcomed Sharn Harris to its teaching team.

Mrs Harris, 25, completed a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) at UniSA last year and her position at Andamooka is her first teaching role. Speaking to The Monitor towards the end of her first week last week, Mrs Harris said she was settling in well. “Everyone has been very friendly, the kids have been super positive and they seem to be very happy to be back at school,” she said.

Op shop donations flood in

T

he Andamooka Opportunity (Op) Shop is open for business again in 2017 and has been overwhelmed with donations over the Christmas break.

Mrs Harris is teaching the reception to year two class, which has 11 students in 2017. “It is a big (age) range to cater to, but all of these students were together last year (except for the new receptions), so they all know each other already, they’re a nice little group,” Mrs Harris said. Mrs Harris said she was looking forward to working with her class throughout the year, with a particular interest and focus on numeracy and literacy.

New student for Andamooka school

illiam Franklin is the latest addition to the student list at the Andamooka Primary School, starting in Ms Gubbin’s class as a year four student this year. William has made the move with his family from Leigh Creek and said he is already enjoying life at his new school. He said he has enjoyed the variety at the school with a new computer room set to be fully operational in the coming months. William’s favourite subject is technology (tech), which he said he was looking forward to taking part in when the class got the opportunity in the coming weeks. LEFT: Happy at his new school, William is enjoying the variety at Andamooka and looks forward to the opportunity to participate in tech studies later in the term.

The op shop has always been well supported by the Roxby Downs and Andamooka communities, with less fortunate families in Ghana benefitting late last year when half a shipping container’s worth of packs were sent overseas for the festive season. A delivery to Ghana was made on December 15 and, with the large quantities again donated over Christmas, another pick-up will be made this month. In preparation for the new year, the op shop’s volunteers have cleared the floor of stock, putting some away for sale and sending the rest to Ghana, and then restocked the store again due to the new donations received. “This is the busiest I have seen it for a while,” the op shop’s Val Harrison said. “Everything is going fine so far this year thanks to the Roxby Downs community, they are usually pretty good when it comes to things like this.” Mrs Harrison said it had been a great start to the year and was hoping to see it continue. With the store being so busy the volunteers were putting in extra hours which she thanked them for. “It is all going really well and I can’t thank the girls enough, we couldn’t do this without them,” Mrs Harrison said. he Roxby Downs Health Forum supports health education within the community and raises awareness on current health intiatives around Australia. Next week is Australia’s Healthy Weight Week (13-19 February 2017), created by the Association of Dieticians.

As part of Australia’s Healthy Weight Week, Australian dieticians want to inspire all Australian to cook at home more often to achieve a healthy weight. This important week is all about getting the right advice and support for those looking to be a healthy weight – and who isn’t? With many Australians always aspiring to eat better in the new year, the campaign aims to get people cooking at home more often. Research shows that people who prepare food at home are more likely to eat smaller portions and take in fewer kilojoules and less fat, salt and sugar. And in turn, this is more likely to result in a healthy weight. For more information check out the website www. healthyweightweek.com.au If you are passionate and interested in healthy food choices and promoting this in Roxby, get involved in the local ‘Community Foodies’ program. Headland junior takes two from two WRITTEN BY MILLIE THOMAS

L

ocal boy Nate Headland is on cloud nine, after taking two wins from two junior sidecar speedway competitions at Mildura, Victoria, and Kurri Kurri, New South Wales, recently. The ten-year-old has followed in his father Trent Headland’s footsteps – who placed second overall in the Motorcycling Australia Australian Titles, FIM World

Cup, Oceania Championships and NSW State Titles last year in the senior sidecar speedway division. Paired with rider Harry Hearne, and self-dubbing themselves Team ‘Hearnland’, the pair found initial success at a junior meeting in Mildura on Saturday, January 28. In the three heat races, Team Hearnland placed second, second and third, steadily building their confidence for the final. “The seat was a bit difficult in the first race, but then it got better once Hearny (Wayne Hearne) put some sticky tape on it,” Nate ex-

taking out the final in style. “Once again, we had a really bad start to the night, then we came home with 14 points and got red (helmet cover – to determine which gate they leave from) in the A Final,” Nate said. “In the final we got a great start and then we cut off Jackson Milner to give Hamish (McCarten) a chance to overtake him and after that we just rode smart, took all the inside lines and sprayed the gate girls at the end!” Nate will continue to travel to race meetings that feature junior divisions over the duration of the season.

plained. “Then we rode good.” It was in the final where the boys showcased their talents, coming away with the top prize after a competitive battle for first. On Saturday, February 4, Nate travelled with Dad Trent all the way to Kurri Kurri for the inaugural Garry Treloar Roll of the Dice meeting – held to commemorate late sidecar speedway stalwart, Garry Treloar. After a long night of racing, tempered with the constant threat of heavy rain, the boys came out as highest points scorers and finals favourites with four firsts and a second, before

Barnes will run three classes a week teaching cheerleading, tumbling, acrobatics and adult fitness to children as young as two years, up to adults under the Cabarfeidh School of Dance name. She has had eight years of cheerleading, tumbling and dance experience through both coaching and competing. the cheerleading category at the same national titles. Barnes said she is excited to be able to pass this knowledge on to Roxby Downs residents of all genders and ages. “I am definitely excited, I loved teaching in Port Pirie and passing the massive passion I have for dance on to others,” she said. “It is all about fun, there are no expectations – if you can’t do something right away it’s fine, you are coming to learn. “I just love watching the progression of dancers.” Already the three classes are filling up with Barnes having to increase class numbers to cater for the large amount of interest.

Barnes’ Cabarfeidh classes will entail a two to four year-old class for half an hour, a five year-old and above tumbling and cheerleading class which will run for an hour and a half, while the third class will be for adults, with everything condensed into an hour-long class. She said she was keeping prices low to encourage people to be involved, have fun and learn something at an affordable price. The two to four year-old class is $3, five year old and above class $15, and the adult class $10, with them all to be run in the St Barbara’s Parish School Hall. In addition, Barnes said she would also aim at getting a circus and acrobatics workshop for local dancers once the other classes were up and running.

For the first time in the RDMXC’s history, the new season will contain four local day meets with club championship points up for grabs. The year will also see the club celebrate the tenth anniversary of its biggest event, the Night Meet. With record numbers turning out to last year’s event, recently re-elected club president Clint Gow-Smith is hoping for another big turnout to help celebrate the decade milestone. Gow-Smith said the club was in for a bumper year in 2017 and was excited about the range of events that would be available to local riders. “We are planning a lot of events this year with a strong focus on the social aspect of the club,” Gow-Smith said. “A sub-committee has been formed to collaborate the dates of all our events and a calendar will be available mid-March outlining all the dates and what’s on and when.” The recent AGM also saw the executive committee re-elected with little change from the one that saw the club through the 2016 season. Gow-Smith will continue on as president while Andrew Swanson will take up the reins as vice president. The other positions on the committee will be filled by Renee Anderson (secretary), Jody GowSmith (treasurer), Heidi Lynch (catering) and Damian Southon (track). BY PATRICK GLOVER

Little Athletics returns fresh from break R oxby Downs Little Athletics Centre (RDLAC) kicks off the second half of its 2016-17 season this weekend, and it’s an ideal time for new families to get involved.

After a break for Christmas, the centre is gearing back up for the remainder of its season, which will go through until its break-up meet on Sunday 26 March. President Bec Nichols is looking forward to resuming again and says

RDLAC has some exciting new additions she can’t wait to use. “Our new hurdles have arrived, so now we have four lanes of ten hurdles which is just awesome,” she said. “The new hurdles’ maiden outing will be this weekend and we are so excited to use them.” While this is just the RDLAC’s second season since it started in 2015-16 summer, the committee has had many achievements in a short space of time, including ap-

plying for and winning funding grants that have been put to good use. “We have recently upgraded the quality of a lot of our equipment,” Nichols said. “We were using a lot from the area school but we now have most of our own which we are storing in our new container at the oval.” Recent purchases by the RDLAC include new lane markers, shot puts, javelins, discus and a portable javelin net which will enable throw-

ing events to be run more safely in close proximity to each other. “We’ve also bought our own race starting equipment, and next on the list are our own ipad and tripod for race timing,” Nichols said. RDLAC meets each Sunday at 8.30am on the town (football) oval, and each session runs for roughly one to one-and-a-half hours depending on numbers. In a bonus for new families to town, or people who have been thinking about giving little athlet-

ics a go, the centre offers reduced fees for the remainder of the season. “Anyone interested in joining us can come down on Sunday, speak to a committee member and have a free ‘come and try’ session for their first two weeks,” Nichols said. The centre also has an active Facebook page – Roxby Downs Little Athletics Centre – where information and updates for parents and participants is regularly posted.

ompetition front runners Olympic Dam Devils took on the dangerous Roxby Miners last Friday night, with the winner advancing to this Friday’s Twenty20 final.

Miners’ skipper Mick Nelson won the coin flip and decided to bat despite being down on star quality, he knew they had enough to put together a handy total. The Devils, however, had other plans. Seb Holbrook claimed the early wicket of Paul Trotta with his new “Victoria Secrets” ball (plenty of lift) as Ryan Selkirk wrapped his big mits around a sharp chance at 1st slip. In form Grant Aitchison was also removed cheaply as Glover got one through his defences. This would bring Nelson to the crease hot off his damaging Chris Lynn-like effort last

round where he scored 58 in no time. With the pressure of two anchors in the shed and not much to come, Nelson went big but was caught in the rope off the bowling of Lucas “Prez” Holbrook. Holbrook’s accurate darts were too good for the Miners as he scored a 180 with three consecutive clean bowled dismissals, the final dart so quick the batsman didn’t even know he had been dismissed. Holbrook finished with the great figures of 4/17 while Ben Vandeleur claimed 2/7 and Seb Holbrook, Glover, Dave Kaminski and Rein Geraghty all picked up a wicket each. Brian Platten was the only Miners player to score double figures with ten late runs at number 11. The Miners all out for a disappointing 38. Olympic Dam had very little trouble chasing down the small total with Ryan “The Machine” Selkirk smashing an unbeaten 33 to

D will now take on Hornridge after their win over East Roxby on Saturday night.

Hornridge has found some form recently and went into their contest with East Roxby as favourites. On a rain-affected ground, the Wanderers batted first and were able to amass a huge total of 160. Skipper Jamie Way anchored the innings with an unbeaten 45 as the East Roxby bowlers struggled with the dewy conditions. Danger man Alec Bray was dismissed for two off the bowling of Ameer Shah, which brought the big man Daniel Hargreaves to the crease, going on to smash 53 in quick time with 9 boundaries. When he was sent

packing Big Bad Leroy Kavanagh was introduced, who helped himself to a quick 30 and along with his skipper, took the Wanderers to 160. Mandemaker was the best of the East Roxby outfit with 2/9 off his four overs. In response Andrew Moss and Chamila Rathnajake were dismissed early with the Roos in trouble at 2/2, a position from which they never recovered. Ryan Castallano (30) was the only East Roxby batter to pass dou-

ble figures as the Roos struggled to get going, finshing their 20 overs 100 runs short of Hornridge’s total. Hargreaves, Jeremy Oldfield and Michael Howard were the pick of the bowlers with two wickets each for the Wanderers. This sets up an intriguing contest between the Olympic Dam Devils and the Hornridge Wanderers this Friday night. The game starts at 7pm and should be a great contest. Miners’ James Telfer looks to cut this delivery.

Wanderers face Devils in T20 final

lympic Dam will take on Hornridge in the Roxby Districts Cricket Association (RDCA) Twenty20 grand final this Friday night, after both teams won their respective semi-finals on the weekend.

Having won the past three T20 grand finals, the Devils will be looking to make it four in a row, after showing they are still a force to be reckoned with by crushing the Roxby Districts Miners by nine wickets on Friday night. The Devils finished top after the T20 competition’s minor rounds and showed why on Friday night, bowling the Miners out for just 38 inside 12 overs. Opening bowlers Seb Holbrook and Patrick Glover were at their damaging best, with the new ball in their semi-final backed up beautifully by spinners Ben Vandeleur and 2014/15 RDCA leading wicket taker Lucas Holbrook. The Devils will also welcome back Nicholas Howard to the line-up this week after missing his side’s semi-final win. Adding Howard, co-captain Rein Geraghty and Robert Rayner to Glover, the Holbrooks, Vandeleur and the Devils boast a very strong bowling line up.

They will need to be at their best again on Friday with Hornridge skipper Jamie Way finding some form at the top of the order last match with an unbeaten 45. Leeroy Kavanagh also found himself amongst the runs on the weekend, 30 not out, and can be dangerous with the bat when on song. Fresh off 53 runs on the weekend, Daniel Hargraves looks set to miss the grand final along with the Wanderers’ other in-form batsman Alec Bray and the hard hitting Daniel Peglar. But Hornridge may yet welcome back Brad Rynne who made 91 in a losing side the last time these two sides met this season. The Devils will be turning to the likes of Roger I’Anson, Seb Holbrook, Craig Nichols and Glover to fire at the top of the order this week. Adrian Harris has been been a revelation with the bat this season and has been known to produce some late hitting at the back end of the innings. Hornridge will also be hoping to gain left armer Michael Hammerling back into the side to lead the Wanderers’ bowling. The game will kick off at 7pm on Friday night at the Roxby Downs Town Oval with the RDCA encouraging locals to get down and show their support in what promises to be an exciting game of cricket.

Captains Rein Geraghty (OD) and Jamie Way (Hornridge) face off ahead of this week’s T20 grand final.
