With the 2017 school year officially beginning on Monday, 30 January, Roxby Downs’ Benji Vrbovac and Cooper Feltus are excitedly counting down the last few days until they can join St Barbara’s Parish School. Both aged five, the boys said they were most looking forward to “the playground” at their new school. “There’s a big playground and a small one,” Benji told The Monitor. For the boys’ mothers, the transition to school is a big step. “I do feel a little bit emotional, but also excited because I feel like he has been ready for school for a year or two, so I’m happy for him as well,” Benji’s mother Loretta Vrbovac said. Meanwhile Renae Feltus said Cooper was “really looking forward” to starting school. “I’m excited for him, he can’t wait,” she said. “The early mornings will be a bit

If you are enthusiastic and confident, your children will be too. - Plan outfits and lunches the night before to avoid the early morning rush and any unnecessary stress. - If possible, visit the new school with your child before the first day to familiarise and explore areas of interest. - Make sure the teacher and school are aware of any special needs your child has before the first day e.g. health and dietary requirements.

Axe attacker escapes prosecution

A

39-year-old Roxby Downs man who attacked two interstate men with an axe on Hermit Street in December last year has escaped prosecution due to lack of evidence.

The man was initially charged with aggravated intent to cause serious harm, but the prosecution will not go ahead due to a lack of cooperation from the two victims and eye witnesses. The two victims who sustained serious injuries – one to the head and the other to his leg and head – were treated for their injuries and have since returned interstate.

The P plater was accompanied in the car by a 16-year-old male passenger and following the incident, both were taken to the Roxby Downs Hospital with minor injuries. Eye witnesses allege the youth was “drifting” which caused him to lose control and collide with the light pole at around 11:45pm, Sunday, January 15. He has been reported for misuse of a motor vehicle and driving without due care and will be summonsed to appear in youth court at a later date.

The three injured passengers were transported to the Roxby Downs Hospital before being sent on to Adelaide to be treated and it is understood all have now been released. Investigations were ongoing since the accident, but Roxby Downs Police Sergeant Mel O’Donnell said no charges would be made. The funeral for the young man was held in Woomera recently.

oxby Downs residents celebrated the recent festive season on their best behaviour.

Local Sergeant Mel O’Donnell said police were pleased that generally everyone had been well behaved over Christmas and new year period. “Roxby Downs was reasonably quiet over Christmas and new year but we were happy with the way people behaved with no incidents, even at any of the licenced premises,” she said. However despite the fatal car accident in Pimba recently, locals still continued to disobey the road rules with a 17-year-old male reported for dangerous driving last week. “It is disappointing thing is it was a young driver and he was driving without a care and no concerns for the safety of other drivers,” Sgt O’Donnell said. “The kids were simply driving without any consideration of their actions.”

Apprentice short changed $6,500

A

young apprentice in Roxby Downs has been back-paid $6,500 in lost wages after being underpaid by a local employer.

The Fair Work Ombudsman recovered the funds after the apprentice, who was aged under 21, was paid a flat hourly rate of $15 over a ten-month period in the 2015-16 financial year. “However, she was entitled to receive rates of up to more than $18 under the Award that applied to her position,” an ombudsman spokesperson said. The underpayment was discov-

ered by Fair Work Ombudsman inspectors as part of its auditing program in regional areas. After being educated about its obligations under workplace laws, the employer acknowledged that it should have been more proactive in ensuring it was meeting minimum lawful entitlements for the employee. “Inspectors issued the business with a Letter of Caution, placing it on notice that subsequent contraventions could result in enforcement of action,” the spokesperson said. The Fair Work Ombudsman said it was not acceptable for

employers to pay young workers flat rates of pay below minimum Award rates. Its website, www.fairwork.gov. au has free advice and information for both employers and employees, including fact sheets and tips for young workers, as well as a pay and conditions tool to help calculate pay rates. The pair has taken over the Andamooka Yacht Club after previous owners Kurt Jury and Matilda Moylan-Blaikie left to pursue a new business in Tasmania. “We are excited about working with the Andamooka and Roxby communities,” Ms Stafford said. “Kurt and Till have had such a great response from both communities in regards to the cafe and the workshops and we are hoping to extend on that.” She said the pair had a number of new ideas they were looking forward to introducing, when the AYC re-opens this Saturday, like weekly mothers’ groups and early childhood music lessons. “We are also super excited to be introducing new menu items that we hope the locals and tourists will enjoy, but don’t worry we will be keeping the good stuff,” Ms Staf-

ford told The Monitor. “On our last trip around Australia we both worked at the most northerly pub in the Cape York of Australia - they are famous for their wood oven pizzas so we are going to be introducing a few new pizzas to the menu that we know everyone will love.” It has been a long journey to Andamooka for the pair, who originally set off to explore Australia having already travelled abroad. Packing everything into their troop carrier, they began an epic journey that took them to the Whitsundays, Daintree Rainforest, Cape York and through the “guts” of Australia. The idea behind the open-ended trip was to explore, appreciate and find a new and interesting place to call home for a while. And find a home they did; in a very unexpected way. Whilst they were exploring Uluru in Central Australia, they decided to contact two friends who were living in Andamooka. Their friends, Mr Jury and Ms Moylan-Blaikie, had (in 2015) opened a tourism hub, featuring a cafe and gallery curiously naming it Andamooka Yacht Club. “We were immediately intrigued

by the opal mining town and The Andamooka Yacht Club,” said Ms Stafford. “We found ourselves drawn to the cosy space and our stay extended from days to weeks.” After many fabulous meals Mr Jury and Ms Moylan Blaikie revealed they were both interested in setting up another business in Tasmania and that would mean them stepping away from the Andamooka Yacht Club. It seemed that the perfect opportunity had arisen for the NSW pair and they took it with both hands. “We are very excited for the opportunity to run a beautiful cafe in such a magical setting,” Ms Stafford said. “Kurt and Till have put so much of themselves into this place and it really shows. We know we have big shoes to fill, but we are definitely up for the challenge.” The AYC will re-open this Saturday with the hours of the store remaining the same – Tuesday-Saturday 9am-3pm and Sunday 10am-3pm.

Rain, winds wreak havoc WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

R

oxby Downs was hit with its highest ever daily rainfall last month as the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) reported a downpour of 48.8 millilitres (ml) on December 28, 2016.

This smashed the average monthly rainfall of 11.2ml in just the one day, with even the day prior recording 5.2ml of rain. The downpours saw Roxby Downs record a monthly rainfall of 63.6ml for December, which was double the amount of the next highest in 2016. Roxby Council was kept busy receiving a number of call outs from residents requesting sandbags and alerting them of fallen trees. The rainfall was so significant it forced the closure of Tiliqua Crescent in two areas, due to road flooding, with the areas reopening shortly after the rain ceased. The local State Emergency Services (SES) team was also kept on high alert with nine call outs due to storm damage – eight in Roxby Downs and one in Andamooka. Local SES’s Doug Winfield said he was glad the crew was able to help with the damage caused, however he said people were still calling the wrong number to reach the team’s services. Rather than call 000 to get the SES, he asked callers to instead contact 132 500 in an emergency. The local SES brigade, while still on

call, had a break over Christmas from their weekly trainings but will commence again on February 1. This was not the only storm Roxby Downs has experienced in recent times, with the town hit by another storm just last week. A thunderstorm in the early hours of Friday, 20 January wreaked havoc, causing damage to both the Roxby Downs Community Club and the Tavern roofs. Club manager Ben Vandeleur said the storm had caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage but was grateful for the work done by staff and the community to have the establishment ready for lunch time meals. “These things happen, but as a business we have to adapt and evolve as required,” Mr Vandeleur told The Monitor. The Tavern was among one of three storm-related call outs that same night for emergency service crews. The latest storm produced 25.5ml of rain over eight hours from Thursday night last week to the early hours of Friday morning. The rain was so heavy 9ml of rain was recorded in just a 10 minute period from 1.19am to 1.29am on Friday, January 20. Roxby Downs was hit by another storm on January 6, with large amounts of thunder and lightning filling the sky. A further 3.4ml of rain was recorded that day.

Damien Harvie captured the thunder storms in Roxby Downs earlier this month.

Rachel Young’s kids took full advantage of the extra rain that filled up the median strip on Stuart Road.

Monitor OPINION The

EDITORIAL By Amanda Hudson

Welcome to 2017!

It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were preparing for our last edition of 2016, and here we are already putting out our first paper for the new year. The Monitor team started back in the office last week, refreshed and ready to deliver another year of news to the far north region. Roxby still seems a bit sleepy and a bit empty, but no doubt by the end of this week people will start to roll back into town ready for the new school year.

I’ve definitely noticed some new faces around town already and I’m sure there’s more on their way here in the next few weeks – if you’re new and reading The Monitor for the first time, welcome! Summer can be a tough time to move here (even those of us who have been here a while find it a bit testing) but there’s still lots going on and many ways you can get to know our town. Tomorrow’s Australia Day celebration (roxbylink pool complex, 9am start) is a great event with a free BBQ breakfast and free pool entry until midday, and the perfect opportunity to witness what makes our

community so special as we celebrate our Australia Day award winners. Local sporting and community groups will start ramping back up in the next few weeks and many are often on the look out for new members - another great way to get out there and meet some locals. Roxby is a friendly, welcoming place where people are used to new faces, so don’t be afraid to say hello. I’m sure our town will feel like home in no time.

Australian accreditation for RFDS clinic

T

he Royal Flying Doctor Service’s Port Augusta clinic, incorporating the Marla, Andamooka and Marree clinics, recently received full Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL) accreditation.

The accreditation, achieved against the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners standards, shows the RFDS “is serious about providing high quality, safe and effective care” to patients in the busy, the organisation says. The Port Augusta Primary Health Care Service and associated remote area clinics are supported by a practice manager and administration staff, who last year adopted a best practice digital patient record management program. This allows RFDS patients to have one single record that can be accessed by medical staff in all locations for scheduled “fly-in” consultation, telehealth and emergency care.

Join the World’s Greatest Shave

W

ith Roxby Downs and surrounding communities strongly supporting the event previously, participants are again being sought for this year’s World’s Greatest Shave in March. The annual event seeks to raise funds and awareness of blood cancers, with the Leukaeima Foundation saying the number of Australians dying from blood cancer (including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma) is now double those losing their life to melanoma. Pastoralists partner in conservation

L

ocal pastoral properties Billa Kalina and Wirraminna stations have joined an Australia-first conser vation initiative under a new stewardship incentive program.

Billa Kalina pastoralist Colin Greenfield (left) with Environment Minister Ian Hunter.

The trial will be delivered by Natural Resources SA Arid Lands with assistance from the Native Vegetation Council’s Significant Environmental Benefit grant program, and sees pastoralists on both properties agree to conserve important habitat areas in return for a stewardship payment. The areas total 194 square kilometres and will provide long-term protection for the region’s significant plants, animals and habitats. The trial is a new way to increase conservation refuges to protect high-conservation value landscapes and support adaptation in the face of changing outback climate and environment. Importantly, the stewardship project means pastoralists can diversify their business and source new income streams, while supporting conservation. A conservation stewardship area has been established at Billa Kalina Station near Roxby Downs, over unique shrubland not conserved in any parks or reserves across Australia. “We have always believed good pastoral management is about looking after the land to benefit stock production and the country; however this programme was the first to provide a reasonable financial incentive for us to take an extra step in dedicating this unique land type as an actual area for conservation,” Billa Kalina Station lessee Colin Greenfield said. The Wirraminna station stewardship area will conserve a rare land type consisting of low sand hills covered with intact Western Myall, Quandong and Mulga trees. A second extended round of the program is hoped to be conducted in the near future.

Far North hit by large rain falls T he Far North has witnessed substantial rain falls over the past month which has resulted in a top-up of Lake Eyre and increased greenery through the area.

Wrightsair’s Trevor Wright has been flying around Lake Eyre and up to Alice Springs for around 30 years and he said he had never seen anything like the landscape at the current time. “It is very green up here in Alice Springs,” he told The Monitor. “I have never seen anything like it.” Mr Wright sent in some images of how green the landscape is, the water that has filled Lake Eyre and was left lying in other areas.

A

round $297 million worth of funding is now available as part of the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

The new $297 million fund has replaced the National Stronger Regions Fund and will deliver infrastructure projects and community activities located outside the major capital cities. Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey encouraged locals from the region to consider lodging an application for a grant, with the Grey electorate having enjoyed success with the former program with more than $25 million in projects receiving support. “Locals know their community best and the new fund gives community groups and councils an opportunity to think outside the square,” Mr Ramsey said. “Funds are finite and that’s why I am pleased the new program restricts project support to the regions, as the name would imply. “That means more opportunity for electorates like Grey and I

look forward to seeing what projects our communities feel will best strengthen our region and help make it a more attractive place to live or improve community connections.” He said he expected the new program would offer even better opportunities for Grey, as funding will be available in two streams: The Infrastructure Projects Stream (applications close 5pm 28 February 2017) will invest in projects that involve the construction of new infrastructure, or upgrade or extension of existing infrastructure. The Community Investments Stream (applications close 5pm 31 March 2017) will invest in local events and activities, strategic regional plans and leadership and capability building activities. An information session will be held today, Wednesday 25 January, at the Port Augusta Business Centre from 2-3.30pm, to give potential applicants the chance to find out more about the funding process. Having spent the past year in Winterthur, Switzerland (a town ten minutes from Zurich), the concept of “home” now has a broader meaning for Mackenzie, after having made so many close friends while away. “The trip was life changing, just so amazing,” she said. “Every now and then since I have been back in Australia I will say ‘when I go back home’, meaning going back to Switzerland.” While in Switzerland Mackenzie stayed with four different families, went to school,

and enjoyed all the sights and attractions Europe had to offer. She visited 25 out of the 26 cantons (the Swiss equivalent of States), the Alps, Reichenbach Falls – made famous by Sherlock Holmes – Barcelona, and got to experience snow sports for the first time. “I went skiing for the first time ever with my first host family during the first lot of school holidays,” Mackenzie said. “Then the next lot of holidays we went to Barcelona.” She said everything was so close she could travel three hours on a train and be in another country and simply spend the afternoon there before heading home that night. Mackenzie wasn’t the only exchange student in Switzerland, with 116 others there when she first arrived,c hanging to 86 when a new group arrived during her stay.

A number of these students (Mackenzie included) took part in a Eurotour which can only be described as “Rotary’s version of a Contiki Tour”. She said this was one of her highlights along with the old towns she got to visit with her different host families. “I really liked the alps but we went there a lot so I had have to say all the old towns we visited was my favourite part of the trip,” Mackenzie said. “Some of them dated back to the seventeenth century, with a house from 1529 being the oldest I saw. “Seeing all the old buildings because it is something we don’t have here in Australia, was my highlight.” She said the schooling was different in Switzerland with most of the classes she attended containing 14 and 15 year olds at the same

level as Australia’s year 11s. But this didn’t faze Mackenzie as she continued to make friends and enjoy her chemistry, among other subjects. She said she highly recommended taking part in a Rotary Exchange if the opportunity arose. The Roxby Districts Rotary Club played a big part in Mackenzie’s trip with member Sandy Sumsion taking the role of her counsellor should she need one. While Mackenzie said she wasn’t required to make contact very often while away, it was comforting to know Mrs Sumsion was there and remained grateful to the club for the opportunity to take part in the exchange. She will return to boarding school at Sacred Heart, Adelaide, shortly and commence her year 12 studies before hoping to head to university next year.

New school facility proposed for Arid Recovery

A

rid Recovery is hoping funding sought as part of the State Government’s Fund My Idea campaign will help build classrooms on its reserve.

The two transportable buildings are already on-site after being donated last year by the Roxby Downs Caravan Park, however the local not-for-profit organisation is hoping potential funding of $25,000 would get phase one of the renovations underway to turn the buildings into classrooms for

school visits. “We already host a number of school groups each year but these new classrooms would allow us to host even larger groups,” said Arid Recovery Science and Education Officer Kimberley Solly. “Having an educational area would allow us to get inside and have things like computers available to the students so they can do things like enter data then and there rather than rely on laptops they have brought.” Phase one of the development

THE MONITOR - Your Community Newspaper

would include joining the two transportable buildings together and getting the basics of the classroom up and running. The next phase would include adding equipment such as computers and then the final step would see air conditioning installed and upgrading to solar power. The new classrooms would also add more indoor sleeping facilities to the 12 already available on the reserve. Ms Solly said if Arid Recovery was successful in winning the grant www.themonitor.com.au

they would use local contractors and businesses to help building the classrooms. The Frankston Rotary Club, who have done volunteer work on the reserve before, have also offered their services to help if successful and Ms Solly said any other organisations that wished to help could do so. With Arid Recover y being named the Far North Science Hub last year, the transformation of the facilities would provide the perfect space for a range of different

events and activities. The Fund My Idea program relied on the votes of the public – voting closed last Friday - with Arid Recovery competing against ten other projects for one of three grants in a total pool of $50,000. The other local submission was Roxby Downs Community Board’s application for an upgrade to the Emu Walk, with funding requested to “upgrade and restore the Emu Trail to an acceptable standard for community use.” BY PATRICK GLOVER

H

ornridge looked to make it two wins against the Miners in as many weeks when the teams met last Friday night in round two of Twenty20 cricket action for season 2016/17.

An unbeaten 89 from Alec Bray, including 11 boundaries and three maximums, was the difference between the two teams. Bray lost partners at regular intervals but kept the scoreboard ticking along. Josh Sheppard claimed 2/17 and Curtley Dadleh, with figures Ritchie Benaud would be proud, 2/22 were the pick of the Miners’ bowlers. Miners would need to score quickly to be a chance of chasing this great total on the rain and wildlife-affected outfield. The Miners chase got off to a dramatic start as Jon Sieburn impaled himself on his stumps to be out hit wicket in the second over. The thoroughbred Sheppard had a picket fence happening apart from one towering six on his way to 19 as he anchored the first half of the innings. With his departure, Miners skipper Mick

Nelson walked out and started swinging for the fence like Babe Ruth on his way to 58 in very little time. Needing an improbable 44 off the last three overs, Nelson went nuts and nearly got his team home but in the end both fell nine runs short, handing Hornridge back to back wins over the men in red and white.

Olympic Dam 4/128 def East Roxby 7/120

O

lympic Dam won an important toss against a dangerous East Roxby outfit.

Openers Patrick Glover and Roger I’Anson made a cautious start before Glover was dismissed cheaply. This brought the powerful Brendan Hill (56) to the crease and slowly with the help of I’Anson (33), the pair begun to get on top of the East Roxby bowling. The pair put on 89 for the second wicket before Mandemaker 2/10 had them both holing out with consecutive deliveries. But the damage had already been done and by then Olympic Dam were on their way to a healthy total, eventually reaching 128. East Roxby would need to chase well and survive Glover’s thunderbolts. In a surprise move often seen in bakeries skipper Geraghty opened up with pies

from the other end as Ben Vandeleur (1/19 )opened the bowling. This move paid dividends with Vandeleur removing Chamila Rathnajake clean bowled with a 32kph grenade. Mandemaker was out to make a statement as he found the boundary with some great power hitting through the offside, particularly over point on his way to 60. Needing 43 off the last five overs, with Andrew Moss and Mandemaker at the crease, the Devils were nervous and rightfully so. But speedster Glover was brought back into the attack and cleaned up Moss and the dangerous Mandemaker to wrestle back the momentum for the Devils. It looked like the game was on ice with 24 needed off the last over, but a wide followed by three consecutive boundaries to Ryan Castallano had the crowd in raptures. He was clean bowled by Harris next ball and the game was over, Olympic Dam getting up by eight runs. It was a fantastic round of T20 cricket with a close and exhilarating finish to both games. The season continues to throw curveballs with a number of different players stepping up at different times for their respective teams. Nobody is favourite in any game which makes for great cricket.

After shooting a round of 82 on day one, he was unable to recover despite improving across the next two days with scores of 78 and 74, eventually finishing between 40th and 50th. “I shot four over in four holes across the first few holes of the tournament, so I shot myself in the foot on day one,” Hooper said. “So the thing from then on was to keep trying and keep going and play out the whole tournament. “Some players pull out ahead of day three if they think they are not going to make the cut, they can do that, but I wanted to keep going and gain that experience and find out where I was at.” Despite missing out narrowly Hooper said he had learnt a lot from the experience and would be better for it when he tried again later this year. “It was challenging, fun and disappointing all at the same time,” Hooper said. “But I now know exactly where I am at and worked out there are a few things that I need to improve on.” The experience of competing at such a high level event would give him more confidence during his next attempt, he said. While the preparation to last year’s qualifying tournament had not been ideal, Hooper said he had made the most of the time and facilities available.
