ell-attended ser vices paid tribute to past and present service men and women in Remembrance Day commemorations around the region last Friday.

In Roxby Downs a large crowd, including many students from local schools and scouts, attended the RSL Community Memorial in Richardson Place. Roxby Downs and Andamooka RSL Sub Branch Vice President Vicki Mason, who officiated the service, was especially pleased to see so many young people in the crowd. “It was great to see so many kids out here, to have that many and the St Barbara’s choir rather than only community members was fabulous,” Ms Mason said. “To have so many kids on a school day, along with the area school captains and the scouts,

just shows the understanding this generation of younger kids has. “It shows they are willing to do their bit for Remembrance Day and they understand the significance.” Ms Mason visits local schools each year just before ANAZC and Remembrance days to explain their importance to students. She said it was not about glorifying war or the medals that were awarded, but to explain that the soldiers fighting were just doing their job, which was protecting Australia. Remembrance Day was not only about remembering those who died or did not come back, Ms Mason said, but also who might have returned with mental health issues because of their experiences in combat. “It’s also about things like the mother who lost her 18 year old son, who went to war and didn’t

come back,” she said. “There are some areas where a whole side of a family can be wiped out because of war.” Ms Mason said more people were beginning to realise the impact war had, including direct impacts on their family personally. Meanwhile, Andamooka marked Remembrance Day with a service led by Sister Patricia (Pat) Hogan. Opening the service held at the town park, Sr Pat welcomed approximately 30 attendees and thanked them for taking the time to remember Australia’s service men and women. “I have a new saying about Australians and that is that we can take it but we can also give it, and that means that we will give for our mates and our country when needed,” she said. OD leads diversity target WRITTEN BY AMANDA HUDSON

Olympic Dam General Manager Surface Aimee Allen (left) with Asset President Jacqui Mcgill.

B

HP Billiton’s Olympic Dam is playing its part in the company’s workforce diversity target, being the only asset globally to have already achieved an equal gender balance.

Company Chief Executive Officer Andrew Mackenzie announced the ‘aspirational target’ at BHP Billiton’s Annual General Meeting in late October, with a 50:50 aim for the entire workforce by the year 2025 (up from a current ratio of around 17 per cent). The concept is not new at Olympic Dam, where Asset President Jacqui Mcgill leads an equal male to female workforce. “In the significant changes we have made to the Olympic Dam leadership team over the past 12 months, we have doubled the diversity,” Ms Mcgill said. “In fact, Olympic Dam is the only asset in BHP Billiton that has 50 per cent gender balance.” Olympic Dam’s workforce diversity also extends beyond gender. “The team (is) also diverse in other ways too - we have members from a broad range of commodities, different continents and both long term BHP Billiton professionals, as well as relative newcomers to both the resource industry and BHP Billiton,” Ms Mcgill said. “I believe this diversity creates a culture of engagement where every voice is valued. People feel comfortable challenging and with some good natured but spirited debate, we are all inspired to do better and be better leaders every-day.” Olympic Dam Lead Community, Chad Menzies said diverse workplaces also have other key benefits. “We know that more inclusive and diverse workplaces perform better operationally, financially and most importantly are safer,” he added.

“Part of our strategy is to set ourselves the ambitious aspirational goal of achieving gender balance by 2025. “Our commitment to inclusion and di-

versity has been written into Our Charter and is key to our future success.” BHP Billiton’s 2016 Annual Report says the company increased female representa-

tion by one per cent (to 22 per cent) at manager/senior level in the past year, along with female graduates (up seven per cent to 49 per cent.)

Standing against domestic violence

L

ocal men will take a public stand against domestic violence at a White Ribbon Day event in Roxby Downs later this month.

White Ribbon Day is the largest Australian male-led movement aimed at stopping men’s violence against women, and a local event is being organised by the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Forum on Friday, November 25. Male members of the community will gather in the Roxby Central Traders Mall to take the oath – “I swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. This is my oath”. Alcohol and Substance Abuse Forum chairperson Terry Boylan said he was glad to be holding such an important event locally to coincide with annual White Ribbon events across Australia. “Domestic abuse is an issue in every community in Australia and regional towns are no exception,” Mr Boylan said. “Someone is affected every day in every community by this issue. “We are happy to be a good support for women within the community by taking a stand and the oath.” A barbecue will be held at the event to raise funds for White Ribbon Australia. A number of key community members have already signed on to take the oath including Mr Boylan and RoxFM Manager Ross Wilson.

Baby quolls orphaned

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

wo baby quolls orphaned after the death of their mother have been hand-reared by Arid Recovery staff.

Sepia, one of the reserve’s female quolls, passed away recently orphaning three, fourmonth-old babies. Arid Recovery General Manager Katherine Tuft said staff had been monitoring the quoll prior to its passing and believed the stress of raising the young had taken its toll. Mrs Tuft said it was very sad but the babies were doing well, after having been alone for around 11 days before being found. Two of three babies have spent the past couple of weeks with Arid Recovery volunteer Bec West as she fed and nursed them back

to health, while the third remains missing. “They were a bit quiet at first but they have been having a bit of milk and started eating crickets so the babies are doing well,” Mrs Tuft said. “They are putting on weight and their appetite has returned which is a positive sign.” Ms West and her partner Reece Pedler have since left Roxby Downs and were unable to take the quoll pair with them, so they will now be relocated to the Flinders Ranges to be with more of their kind. Sepia was one of two female quolls introduced to the reserve in late 2015, while two males joined them at the beginning of this year. Mrs Tuft said she hoped to bring a new group of quolls to Arid Recovery early next year.

New faces at Raine & Horne T

wo long term Roxby locals, Karena Scott and Zak Zeptner, have joined Raine & Horne Roxby Downs as property managers.

Having lived in Roxby for a combined total of 40 years (13 for Karena and Zak, 27) the duo brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Raine & Horne, which is also celebrating 10 years in Roxby Downs this year. After spending eight-and-a-half years at the Roxby National Australia Bank (NAB) branch, Mrs Scott is also well-known for her community involvement including with the Roxby Downs Area School Parents and Friends (president and market day coordinator), and the school’s governing council (secretary). She is also current treasurer of the Roxby Downs Neighbourhood Watch branch and a member of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Auxiliary. “I am really enjoying the diversity of this role, there is something new every day and it’s great to get out and about and not just

be behind a desk,” Mrs Scott said. “It’s a great change of environment.” Meanwhile Mr Zeptner, who grew up in Roxby Downs including completing his schooling locally, comes to the Raine & Horne team after most recently working for BHP Billiton’s town office as a villages officer. “I’ve always had an interest in, and got enjoyment out of, property-related work so this is a great fit,” Mr Zeptner explained. “Like Karena, I am really enjoying the diversity it brings. We can be doing property inspections, show-throughs and meeting new people all the time, so every day is different.” Both Mrs Scott and Mr Zeptner are studying a Certificate Three in Property Services and are enjoying being supported in their learning by Raine & Horne owners Sandy and Craig Sumsion. “It is really beneficial for us as employees to have all of Craig and Sandy’s history in the business right here in the office with us – they know so much about our tenants and our properties which is invaluable,” Mrs Scott said.

Risky business for local home buyers WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

F

irst home buyers in Roxby Downs looking to borrow through the National Australian Bank (NAB) may find the task a little more difficult after it declared postcode 5725 “risky” recently. Borrowers will now need to

find a minimum 30 per cent deposit to secure loans, with Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam one of 600 areas experiencing the bank’s loss of confidence. However, according to local mortgage advisor Jo Dillon, this was not new and had been the case for the past 12 months. Ms Dillon said this was another side effect from BHP Billiton’s job cuts in recent times , but was

also nothing to be concerned about. “There are still some lenders out there still happy to offer up to and including 90 per cent, you just have to do your homework and talk to an independent advisor and access your options,” she said. “And for those with NAB these figures are always open for change, all the change made by

the lenders is made in reaction to the last 12 months.” The figures are reviewed annually and Ms Dillon said if things were to pick up in Roxby Downs again a decrease in minimum deposits could be seeen as soon as next year. Other locations also affected include Point Lowly and Whyalla Norrie, Playford, Jenkins and Stuart.

number of free TAFE SA courses will be held in Roxby Downs in the coming weeks.

The courses, the second of which is on offer next week, are ‘workplace health and safety’, ‘social media tools’ and ‘protect and secure information’. Funded by the Department of State Development, the free courses are of a “huge benefit” according to TAFE SA regional manager Robin O’Dea. “The funding allows us to deliver these courses to far out places like shearing courses on stations or auto electrical sessions on a farmer’s farm,” he said. “Roxby Downs fits the bill and so it gives us the opportunity to offer a variety of free courses (here).” Mr O’Dea said the courses had been selected after previous local feedback, and it was great to be able to offer courses community members had expressed interest in. hoppers will be spoilt for choice at this weekend’s twilight market, with around 50 local and visiting stalls setting up shop on Saturday evening.

A mix of food, jewellery, giftware and clothing stalls will feature at the market, being held between 5pm and 8pm at the Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS). Event organiser RDAS Parents and Friends’ spokesperson Claire Meatheringham said the event had been well attended last year and was expecting a similar, if not better, turn out in 2016. “Following on from the success of the twilight market last year we thought we would do it again,” Ms Meatheringham said. “We are always trying to come up with new ideas to keep the markets fun and to keep people attending and we believe the twilight market achieved that, so hopefully we can keep building on that this year and into the future.” This weekend’s market will be located further back than usual, running down the school’s covered walkway and spilling onto the grassed area behind the staff room. With Christmas just around the corner Ms Meatheringham said the market was the perfect place to pick up a few gifts ready for the festive season. “It gives people a chance to have a look at the different avenues up here in Roxby Downs,” she said. “It also helps support local business from other communities as well as our own.” Funds raised from the night will go towards buying one of two new drinking fountains for the school. Museum boosts Marree tourism T

ourism in Marree has been boosted by the opening of a new museum preserving its railway history.

The brainchild of the Marree Progress Association, the museum has been more than six years in the making and commemorates the vital link the town provided in transportation in South Australia’s far north. Housed in the revamped existing railway building, the museum fea-

tures photos depicting life when the Ghan passed through the town, as well as a touchscreen with old films and videos and oral history interviews with former railway workers. “We expect the museum will increase opportunities for tourism within the town, together with displaying how the township was during the railway years,” said Mark Shirley, Outback Community Authority (OCA) Community Development Officer. “We hope that railway enthusiasts

from across the country will visit the museum, together with tourists who are so important to the community now that the railways are no more.” The OCA contributed financially to the project, along with History SA and the Marree Progress Association. Monitor SPORT The

Barbarians good sports on and off the field

O

lympic Dam Barbarians Rugby League Club is the first local sporting organisation to receive Level Two accreditation under the Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.

Recognising the club’s commitment to reducing the link between alcohol and sport in the community, the accreditation hinges on the development of a safe transport policy. While a number of local sporting groups have achieved the program’s Level One accreditation in the past few months, the Barbarians are the first to reach Level Two. East Roxby Football Club is currently also working towards the same milestone. Good Sports works together with sporting clubs to build a “healthier sporting nation” by establishing a smoke free environment, applying safe transport practices and managing alcohol responsibly within the club. Barbarians’ president Jason Starkey said the program had been a very helpful step for the club. “Sometimes you don’t think about issues until they

are put in front of you,” Starkey said. “Good Sports has a simple online process that helped us check out how our club was going, and they provided us with handy resources and information to make it easier for our club to adopt change. “As a club that sells alcohol, the Good Sports Safe Transport policy made it much easier for our committee to document our club’s position and role in promoting safe transport. This ensures the safety of our members and the wider community.” Good Sports State Manager for SA Margie Fahy congratulated the Barbarians, saying breaking the link between alcohol and sport had “never been more important”. “Congratulations to the club for leading the way in making positive change to reduce harm from alcohol and other drugs, and for being the first sporting club in Roxby Downs to have an established safe transport policy that considers the health and safety of members and community.” Currently there are five Roxby Downs sports clubs engaged in the Good Sports program, among more than 7,000 Australia-wide.

Hornridge one game clear

WRITTEN BY BEN VANDELEUR

Hornridge 4/209 def Roxby Miners 6/157

A

top-of-the-table clash between the Hornridge Wanderers and Roxby Miners kicked off round four of Roxby Districts Cricket Association action last Friday night.

Hornridge won the toss and elected to bat first against a very undermanned Miners side in a heat-shortened game. Clint Gow-Smith (29) and Adam Malm (57) continued on their recent good form, guiding their side to 95 without loss. Both fell in quick succession but Daniel Pegler took up the attack, making a quick fire 57 not out supported by Leroy Kavanagh

with 26 not out at the back end of the innings. These contributions saw the Wanderers finish with a massive 4/209 which made for a long 35 overs for the Miners bowlers. Acting captain Paul Trotta was the pick of the Miners bowlers with 2/35 supported by James Bremner with 1/24 off seven, including three crucial maidens after the rest of the attack went for six or more and over. The Miners then began the daunting task of chasing the big total with veteran Trotta (47) anchoring the innings as wickets fell around him. Steve Johnson (61 not out) helped the Miners scorecard with the aid of a runner, but they were never a threat to the strong Hornridge outfit. Pick of the bowlers for Hornridge was opener Kiaran Dadleh with 2/31 against his old side.

Devils find form against roos

WRITTEN BY BEN VANDELEUR

Olympic Dam Devils 120 def East Roxby Roos 9/60

T

he second match of the round saw Olympic Dam take on East Roxby on Saturday night in slightly cooler conditions.

OD captain Patrick Glover in action on Saturday.

East Roxby’s Sachira Muthukumarana.

Devils skipper Patrick Glover won the toss and elected to bat, opening with himself and the returning Adam Homer (2). Homer was judged LBW by Devils president Tyler “Woodsy” Sims in controversial fashion, while Roos skipper Troy Mulders (3/22) then snared the prize wicket of Glover (15) and East Roxby were up and about. Olympic Dam’s middle order struggled against some quality slow bowling from Chamila Rathnajake (3/27) and the pace of Sachira “Teddy” Muthukumarana (3/21). They were able to battle towards a competitive total of 120 all out in the 30th over thanks largely to an important knock from number three Brendan Hill (40). In reply East Roxby started with confidence against a fired up Glover with a gale force wind behind him. Rathnajake in particular looked solid in defence as he took the majority of the strike against the OD captain. Glover eventually flicked the switch

in the ninth over, removing the dangerous Muthukumarana (14) and Craig Rainsford in consecutive deliveries. Andrew Moss was also removed without scoring leaving the middle order to shoulder the responsibility. Ben “Beeps” Vandeleur (4/27), who jagged five wickets the last time these teams met, was introduced into the breeze with immediate effect, removing the anchor Rathnajake (15) with a sharp caught and bowled. The next ball saw skipper Mulders sensationally run out in identical fashion to Callum Ferguson on debut for Australia in Hobart, with James Beenham’s rocket arm to the keeper catching the captain well short. Two balls later Ameer Shah was judged LBW on an outswinger to finish a three wicket over. Dan Rainsford (17) put up a fight dispatching a few of Vandeleur’s deliveries, but the resistance was shortlived as he and then Keegan Powe (6) holed out to Vandeleur. Howard (1/6) cleaned up the last wicket for a convincing win to the Devils. The season is now wide open without anyone dominating, and comes down to numbers and who can organise their squads on the night. This makes for great viewing and presents an opportunity for all clubs, as nobody is guaranteed a win at the moment. The Olympic Dam Barbarians Rugby Club held its Annual General Meeting on Sunday at the Roxby Downs Golf Club. In attendance were (back, from left) Richard Pitau, Liette Schoemaker, Wi Pitau, Jodie Fereti, Ria Pitau, (front left) Kev Stowell, Cam Wray, Francis Falemaka, Jason Starkey and Junior Fereti. A new committee was elected and upcoming events and dates discussed, including a wine tour from December 9-11.

2017 Roxby Downs netball season in limbo following AGM CONTINUED FROM BACK PAGE With no one putting their hand up to replace those positions, they have been left vacant for now and Thompson said she hoped some new people would take on these roles. “If people don’t volunteer, there will be no season next year it is as simple as that,” she said. Thompson said squad sides would also be affected if the season was to be cancelled, with representative sides only allowed to THE MONITOR - Your Community Newspaper

compete if players are taking part in an association competition. “That would be really disappointing because the representative teams did really well at the country championships this year and it won’t happen again if there is no season.” Despite the lack of numbers, a few decisions were made at the AGM including the decision to introduce a D Grade competition in 2017 – if the season goes ahead. The appointment of a separate senior

competition sub-committee was also made, with a representative from that group to sit in on executive committee meetings. The minimum age for players to compete was also altered, with participants required to now be 14 years old on May 1 if they are to take part in the senior season. If anyone is interested in filling any of these positions they are urged to contact Hayley Thompson at roxbynetball@hotmail.com).

oxby Downs’ 2017 n e tb a l l s e a s o n i s under threat after key executive committee positions were unfilled at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) last week.

Ne w President Hayle y Thompson takes over from Theresa Wurfel, while Renee Anderson stepped into the Vice President’s role after Jane Rogers departed the committee. However, all other positons remain empty after an underwhelming response at the AGM on Tuesday, November 8. “There were 12 people at the AGM, which is pretty poor considering there are hundreds involved with netball in this town,” Thompson said. “There will be no junior or senior season if no-one puts their hands up (to fill these positions). “Netball is massive to the town, not only the different grades and levels but for the juniors who play in the senior grades and get a chance to develop their netball further, they suffer too. “It is a bit wait and see at the moment.” Another meeting is due to be held on Tuesday, December 6, before two more in January and February next year to try and fill the vacancies. Positions still up for grabs include treasurer, secretary, junior and senior record keeper and umpiring, coaching and uniform co-ordinators. The AGM saw a massive change over in personnel with Wurfel, Rogers, Darya White and Michelle Casserly all stepping down from their positions. CONTINUED PAGE 15
