Ohh ahh! Cricket legend visits Roxby to thank locals for fundraising efforts WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

A

ustralian cricketing legend Glenn McGrath visited Roxby Downs last Friday, to thank the community for their fundraising efforts and support from the Roxby Districts’ Cricket Association’s annual Pink Stumps Day events.

McGrath arrived on Friday afternoon and after a meet and greet with the RDCA committee and special Pink Stumps Day volunteers, headed down to the oval to sign autographs and take pictures with locals. His arrival sent locals into a frenzy, with a sea of pink awaiting him, and everyone wanting to have a chat to the Australian fast bowling legend. After around an hour of meeting locals and watching the opening match of the RDCA season between East Roxby and Hornridge, he took the time to be interviewed and tell some of the stories from his playing days. An auction followed, before the

four local captains had the chance to face and bowl to McGrath. “A huge thank you, I’ve really enjoyed my time here,” he said. “Unfortunately it was a quick trip but I look forward to coming back in the near future. “Thank you for your support and hopefully your continued support as well.” McGrath began the Foundation in 2002 with his late wife Jane, and said he had never thought it would grow to be as big as it is now, with small towns like Roxby Downs amassing $90,000. “When we first set it up, we set it up hoping to help one person by telling our story. To think (about)

where it’s grown is incredible,” he said. “It just continually blows me away - the support we have received from all around this country, and it has inspired me to keep going - to know what I’m doing, what we’re doing is making a big difference. “For people putting on events raising money for the foundation which is something close to my heart I think is incredible. McGrath said it was country towns like Roxby Downs which the McGrath Foundation nurses had a major aim to serve. CONTINUE ON PAGE 3 8225_Olympic_Dam_1016

Over the past three years, the Roxby Downs community have raised around $90,000 for the McGrath Foundation. McGrath’s visit signified the opening of the 2016/17 cricket season in the Roxby Downs area, with

the community flocking to the town oval to get a glimpse of the greatest fast bowler in history. “I thought it (the night) was really good – amazing,” he told The Monitor. “I love coming out to the bush, I take any chance I get, but to come out like this to a community that is really supportive and comes together well and to raise, closing in on, $100,000 for the McGrath Foundation - I think is something very special. “You could see tonight there was a good atmosphere and it’s something pretty special when the community comes together (like this), I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Club looking to return kids play area undraising has begun to develop a new children’s play area at the Roxby Downs Community Club, it has been revealed.

Prior to renovations in 2009, The Club featured a grassed area and plastic play equipment for children to play on. However, the renovations did not allow for such an area to remain, and the club has been without such a facility since. Roxby Downs Community Club Committee Vice President Vicki Mason said it was time to introduce something for the younger ones again. “We want to provide something for the kids, we are supposed to be a community club so it is what we are meant to be doing,” Ms Mason told The Monitor. “At the moment if people in town want to go to (the) Club for a restaurant experience as a family they don’t want their kids running around upsetting other people. “They don’t want to be getting up and down like a yo-yo watching the kids either, if people want to go out with their kids, they have nothing to do.” Planning for the children’s area is still in early stages, with no plans drawn up and no set date on when it would be installed. “At the minute it is a work in progress, it is nothing major for the time being until we start getting more input,” Ms Mason said. “It will be an ongoing thing, but we want to get it back to a place for everyone, which is what a community club is all about.” Ms Mason said as a grandparent this was an important topic and she along with the rest of the committee were going to be proactive with their approach to getting a children’s area back at The Club. Tins are currently out at The Club for donations, she has been selling lucky squares to patrons, manager Ben Vandeleur held a sausage sizzle recently and there is a quiz night set to be held before the end of the year. Ms Mason encouraged locals to get behind the cause.

England trip kicks off degree set to benefit Roxby WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

A

fter 10 years of waiting, education entrepreneur Angela Thompson has been selected to take part in a Master’s Degree in working with children and families at the Pen Green Centre in England.

Walking in the name of freedom

A

round 40 locals took part in the A21 Walk for Freedom on Saturday, looking to raise awareness about human trafficking. Organiser of the walk Hayley Scrivens said it was a real positive to see so many people engaging with the issue and taking part in the event.

“I think we started to get people’s attention and these people were quite overwhelmed with the size of the problem,” Ms Scrivens said. “It is good that people started to engage with it and that is what the walk is all about – trying to normalise the conversation.” Ms Scrivens said this was just

the third year these kind of events had been held and already there were hundreds being held all over the world. She said she was hoping to hold another event in the future and keep the momentum of the campaign going and hopefully abolish the problem all together.

Mrs Thompson made her first of many trips to England on Saturday, October 1 and said she thoroughly enjoyed her time with the small group that accompanied her, and was excited to finally be able to undertake the degree. “I have been in the field for 40 years and I am still learning,” she said. “The course is going to be great, absolutely! It challenges the way we think about things, teaches us new things and practices while also re-visiting basics we have already learnt and applying them in a different context. “We were talking about things we learned 50 or 60 years ago (and reflected on) seeing it in practice now, and how different it can work.” Mrs Thompson was part of a team of 10 involved in the course, with one participant from Amsterdam and the rest from around the United Kingdom (UK). While taking part in the first phase of her study at Pen Green, she said

she looked at ideas around how children learn, theories around how people think about children, and talked about how each person implemented practices in their own workplace. “It was good to get some different perspectives on early years learning frameworks,” Mrs Thompson said. The degree will last until 2018 when Mrs Thompson will be due to complete the course and graduate. She will travel to the Pen Green Centre in England twice a year throughout the duration of the course, with her next trip scheduled for March, 2017. Mrs Thompson has already started applying the new knowledge she has gained across educational institutions in Roxby Downs. Meanwhile, Mrs Thompson is looking to create a support group for those in Roxby Downs who are studying degrees externally. “Studying externally can be hard and 76 per cent of people drop out when studying externally,” she said. “It will just be about getting together and being able to use one another to bounce ideas off and help each other.” Mrs Thompson said these support groups would become functional in the coming weeks and encouraged anyone studying externally in Roxby Downs to keep an eye out for more information.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE “It’s tough enough going through it (cancer) anyway but to then have to travel or not have the support where you live it makes it so much tougher,” he said. “So by having a breast care nurse where you live and offering it free of charge, we’re hoping it has a positive

influence in a pretty negative time and hopefully just make life a little bit better.” “It’s not so much about the quantity of time, but the quality of time if we can improve someone’s life by having a breast care nurse here especially out in the country areas, I’m a country boy myself, it is something pretty special.”

Local’s Kokoda walk for RFDS WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

L

ocal Matt Curtis will be undertaking the adventure of a lifetime when he walks the Kokoda Track next month with his sister.

Not only will the duo be taking on one of the most gruelling hikes in the world, but they will also use the trek as an opportunity to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS). “When my sister Laura told me about the Kokoda Challenge to raise money for the RFDS, (I thought) it was the perfect opportunity to help the RFDS while learning more about our Australian history, two things I am very passionate about,” Mr Curtis said. “I have always respected and admired the RFDS for what they do for so many rural communities all over Australia, this admiration all started with my parents.” Mr Curtis explained he had grown up on a remote station in western New South Wales, and the RFDS had been his family’s only source of professional medical aid. “I have also seen firsthand the important role the RFDS play through my time as a volunteer with the Roxby Downs SES (State Emergency Service) unit and Olympic Dam emergency services.” The pair had aimed to raise a total of $8000 by the November 27 cut-off date, but have already raised around $10,000,

with the expedition still a few weeks away. “Both Laura and myself were not expecting our fundraising to go this well,” Mr Curtis said. “We have been blown away by the support of parents, family, friends and colleagues.” BHP Billiton’s match giving program – which meets dollar for dollar raised – has also helped with fundraising. Mr Curtis said he was excited about the trek, having never before been to Papua New Guinea, and because he would get the opportunity to see firsthand prevalent Australia and New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) history. However, he is nervous about the perceived difficulty of the Kokoda route. “The best Laura and I can do is to get as much training done as we can,” Mr Curtis said. “I have been gradually doing more long walks with my pack around Roxby, but also throughout SA such as Mt Lofty, Mt Remarkable and Flinders Ranges. “While Laura has been doing several long hikes in NSW.” The pair will trek 96 kilometres over 10 days – from Saturday, November 5 to Tuesday, November 15 - walking with a 12 kilogram pack with bedding and spare clothing. Donations will be open until November 27 and can be made at https:// rfds-kokoda-2016.everydayhero.com/ au/team-matt-laura.

Beaten Track Western Gawler Craton joint venture dispute resolution

A

dispute involving mining companies Tyranna , WP G Resources and Coombedown Resources over a joint venture in the Western Gawler Cration – the same vein that runs through Olympic Dam – has been resolved.

The northern part of the venture that falls under exploration license 5661 surrounds Challenger gold mine and was at the centre of the dispute. Tyranna had contested whether the area had formed actually part of the venture (WGCJV). Tyranna is the manager of the WGCJV with a 66 per cent interest and WPG has a 34 per cent interest. This joint venture was for gold only, however as part of a binding term sheet between Tyranna and WPG, Tyranna will now have 100 per cent rights to other minerals on the WGCJV tenements. Ty r a n n a h a s dropped its claim to the northern portion of EL 5661 (including ML 6457) as being part of the WGCJV.

In return, WPG has agreed that ownership of the tenements subject to the WGCJV will be transferred to Tyranna and its subsidiary Half Moon Pty Ltd (HMP) and that a new joint venture will be formed between WPG and Tyranna and their subsidiaries. The significance of this agreement is that Tyranna has the 100 per cent rights to explore for minerals other than Gold. By acquiring the rights to all other minerals on the WGCJV, an additional 2,500 kilometres squared has been added to Tyranna’s 100 per cent tene-

ment holding of 5,700 kilometres squared. “This agreement frees Tyranna to control its own destiny by securing ownership of the WGCJV tenements,” Tyranna Managing Director Bruno Seneque said recently. “This ownership gives us the ability to explore for other minerals on the WGCJV tenements and creates a tremendous opportunity to now devise a holistic exploration strategy to maximise all of our tenements.” Exploration license 5661 spans over Barton, Coober Pedy, Tallaringa and Tarcoola.

Baz knocks up 25 years WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

W

hat began as a three month contract for local stalwart Barry “Baz” Dadleh has turned into a 25 year stay in Roxby Downs and service to Monadelphous.

But Baz said he wouldn’t change a thing and could not have picked a better spot to bring up his family. He has seen more than 1500 employees pass through Monadelphous including some unforgettable life-long friends, but said despite the transience he has thoroughly enjoyed his time with the company. “The people have definitely been one of the highlights for me, just some of the fantastic people you get to be around,” Baz said. He said there were a few people in particular who had had a significant impact on his career, with David Pattenden and Neil McKinnon the most notable. “I think the best thing about Barry is he has adapted to the people he works with and the business,” Ex-Monadelphous Branch Manager Mr Pattenden said. “He would always break the ice, he just gets along with anyone. “From a work point of view he is committed to the business, the people he is in charge of and the clients.”

Current Monadelphous Site Manager Darryl Hamlyn echoed Mr Pattenden’s comments, saying Baz was like a father figure to most colleagues and was easy to get along with. Baz said he has had a variety of different roles at Monadelphous since beginning 25 years ago which is one of the reasons he has stayed. He originally came to Roxby Downs as a boiler maker before working his way through the ranks to leading hand, to various supervisor’s roles, project super intendent and now finally to his current position as workshop manager. Baz has also worked short stints at Monadelphous offices in Perth and the Northern Territory. “Most of the roles that I have held have been project related,” Baz said. “I have worked in just about every area on site, which is probably why I have been here for so long because I have been stuck in the one place for a long period of time.” During his time at Monadelphous, Baz said he had seen a lot of changes, not just with the employees but the business as well. He said it started as a small business, with a few atco huts - which were the reception, the crib room and toilets – and a workshop out the back. The business has now grown into one of the most successful

contractors in Olympic Dam and Baz has been there almost every step of the way to see the transition. But he said he does miss the ‘good old days’ where the team would go out the back of the business on a Friday night, have a few beers and enjoy each other’s company while cooking a barbecue. Mr Pattenden said his commitment to the business shows the true spirit of a good Monadelphous employee.

A community mentor and contributor Baz’s passion has well and truly transferred into the community where Baz has been involved in a variety of sporting clubs in his 25 years. “I was heavily involved with basketball, although there are no official records I think I played around 600 games over 20 odd years,” he said. “Cricket with the Rogues was a big part of our lives - I played 99 games for them – and we have been involved in Pink Stumps Day, both Stacey and I have had a big part in that in the past.” The couple have also been involved in indoor cricket, lawn bowls and softball. “But cricket was always the big one, I played, coached and was president – for 15 years – but now it is golf with a bit of

volleyball on the side. “Sport has played such a big part in our lives, even junior sports with the kids.” Originally from Marree, Baz said the lifestyle of the Roxby Downs community suited him and his family. All of his children have grown up in Roxby Downs with sons Kiaran and Ethan the only twins ever to be born in the Roxby Downs hospital. Baz said all three children – Kiaran, Ethan and Jordan – had all enjoyed going to school in Roxby Downs. “We are glad to call Roxby our home and we have no plans to move just yet,” he said. “We have so many good friends in town and we just love the community.” Baz said he was thrilled Monadelphous was as community minded as he was, with the company donating what they could where they could to help out local groups and organisations. It is not just the community he has been focused on helping, hoping that some of the apprentices and employees that have worked under him have gone on to bigger and better things. “I am always about people improving themselves and becoming better people,” Baz said. “People that have worked for me, some have gone away and become supervisors or managers – I’d like to think I had a bit to do with that.”

How to build your own veggie garden Step 1: Choose an Area First thing is to figure out the best place to build your garden bed. All veggies need sunshine and morning sun is ideal, so look for an easterly aspect. You’ll also need to protect your new seedlings from the elements, especially in harsh weather conditions. Avoid areas with large trees, as they can steal moisture and nutrients from your growing area. Step 2: Assemble Garden Bed Lay out all the parts of the garden bed and pull the plastic film off the steel panels. Check the instructions for which steel panel to start with. With your garden gloves on, take the first piece of corrugated steel and carefully slide one PVC post onto the end

of the steel panel vertically. Make sure each press lug in the steel panel slides freely inside the PVC groove. Now take the next sheet of metal into the other side of the first post. Keep adding posts and panels until all are joined together. Next, press the post gaps on top of each post. Step 3: Plant You can either use the cardboard packaging that the garden bed came in as a base for your garden, or can choose to line your veggie pack with weed matting. The garden beds are ready to be filled with planting soil and compost. Check with your local Mitre 10 to find the best soil mixture to use for your plants. Most vegetables can be bought as seedlings, or you can start from scratch and

plant seeds. If you do plant from seeds, soil preparation is particularly important. Step 4: Maintain Your Plants Water your seedlings in well and always check the soil and keep it moist. Regular doses of organic or artificial fertilizers will encourage growth. Manure, blood and bone and liquid fertilizers will also get the nutrients going too. Insects and diseases are going to love your garden as much as you do. So to keep them at bay, there are numerous options depending on what you are growing- head down to your local Mitre 10 for advice on the best product for your garden. C

ouncil has been advised that there has been a recent increase in dog faeces being left on street verges and footpaths around Roxby.

Leaving dog faeces in public areas is unsightly and unhygienic. Droppings left on the street increase the spread of disease to humans and other dogs. Roxby Council kindly asks dog owners to take responsibility for their pets, by picking up faeces whilst out on walks. Roxby Council provides ‘dog poop’ bags at council-managed areas, including the ovals and tennis courts. Dog faeces also need to be disposed of

Secker continues to rise at West Adelaide

Brooke’s Krazy about L Fitness

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

ocal Jon Secker has continued his football rise, winning the award for best under 18 player from the Roxby Downs area at the West Adelaide Football Club (WAFC) recently.

Brooke Melina is excited to train locals of all fitness levels.

L

ocal woman Brooke Melina launched local exercise class business Fitness Kraze in recent months, and with a reputation that already precedes itself, her fitness programs have taken off. Brooke offers classes ranging from low intensity beginners classes to military style boot camp classes – and everything in between. For her, sports and exercise have been part of life from a young age. “I have been into fitness for most of my life. My parents are really into it – most of my family played sport growing up,” Brooke explained. “But for this type of fitness – that is high intensity circuits – I’ve only really gotten into it the last couple of years.” The first class Brooke launched – high intensity interval training or HIIT earned Brooke a fast reputation for no-nonsense style training that achieves great results – but Brooke said not to be intimidated. “New people that come along shouldn’t feel anxious – at least try it once before you decide it’s too intimidating or scary!” she said. All fitness levels and ages are welcome, with participants encouraged to take things at their own pace. She explained lots of her customers often came to her classes because they felt more secure and less judged than when they went to the gym, and

with just over 400 members, she might be on to something. “I don’t think anything was offered like this in town when I started up – that is circuit and interval training,” Brooke said. “I do enjoy it – why not have a job that you love doing every day. Its convenient with the kids you know – I can still do holidays, I can still do assemblies – it’s just more flexible.” Brooke draws inspiration by a number of celebrity fitness models she follows on social media, and from her sister who trains using ‘crossfit’. “I just do it to be fit and strong – not to look a certain way,” she said. Brooke’s classes include ‘BLIS’ a beginners circuit, low intensity session that lasts 30 minutes, HIIT - a high intensity interval training class for 45 minutes, Metafit - a class that focuses on body weight training for 20 – 30 minutes, punch hit boxing which is group boxing that runs for 45 minutes, one-on-one boxing classes for 30 minutes, personal training and bootcamp – military inspired high intensity training that runs for an hour. For more information on Fitness Kraze and the services Brooke offers, visit the Fitness Kraze Facebook group at www.facebook.com/ groups/702595073141399/.

Secker said the award came as a shock, having only played four games for West Adelaide during the season due to football commitments with his school, Sacred Heart College. “There are so many good players that have come from the region, like Jaydn Brind, that have worked through the ranks or some of the younger kids that have been coming down,” he said. Secker said he was honoured by the award and thanked West Adelaide for the support they had shown him since his move to Adelaide to follow a career in football. “It was a big shock moving to Adelaide, it was obviously a lot bigger than town (Roxby Downs),” he said. “But the West Adelaide Football Club welcomed me with open arms and have supported me which has been good, and I thank the club for that.” Secker captained the under 16 side at West Adelaide last year and made a smooth transition to the under 18 side in 2016. Despite only getting a few opportunities due to school football commitments, WAFC Centre of Excellence Manager Jason Porplyzia said Secker had been ‘really good’ in the few games he did play. “His commitment to the club when he was here was outstanding,” Porplyzia, told The Monitor. “He has improved this season, coach-

es were playing him across half back as a running defender and he did a good job. “He has a really strong attack on the football and provided a bit of run off half back, he took his football to another level.” Secker will be an older under 18 player next year and both he and Porplyzia knew there was still room for improvement. “I want to try and improve my skills and my fitness,” he said. “My goal is to get into the reserves team next season.” Porplyzia said if Secker puts in the hard yards at pre-season there was every chance he may find himself in the mix for a reserve’s game. Meanwhile, fellow Roxby Downs recruits continue to impress West Adelaide staff with a new intake set to hit the Richmond based club next season. Porplyzia said the club expected Coby Seery, Caleb Turley and Connor Woolford to pull on the red and black jumper next year joining the likes of Secker. Jack Dalgleish got a few under 16 games under his belt in 2016, which Porplyzia said was pleasing to see. Under 14 local juniors were given the chance to show off their fitness skills last week with testing at Port Adelaide in front of West Adelaide coaches. Bailey Chamberlain, George Clarke and Caleb Kemyevery all took part, all putting in strong performances. Chamberlain the most impressive, recording the highest beep test and placing first in the agility test – even reaching scores close to that of 2016 AFL draft camp participants. Other locals at West Adelaide this season included Jaydn Brind and Tom Schott who both missed a majority of the season through injury. Jon Secker took some time out in Roxby Downs recently after being named best under 18 player at West Adelaide from the area.

RAD WORKSHOP: Sydney based dancer/teacher Jake Parker Green visited Roxby Downs last week to run a workshop with locals children. He ran three workshops with participants to teach Roxby Downs locals some dance styles they hadn’t seen before. Green has travelled the world as a dancer, performing with the likes of Ricky Martin, Timomatic and Sneaky Sound System. He has also made appearances on shows such as X Factor and The Voice. Although he has been all over the world, he said he thoroughly enjoyed his time in Roxby Downs and loved touring the country, whether in big cities or small country towns. Green said all the attendees were very enthusiastic, hard-working and eager to learn. THE MONITOR - Your Community Newspaper

ornelius ‘Corny’ Castle will take the Roxby and Districts Racing Club’s top job as committee president this year, following the club’s AGM on Sunday.

Corny takes over from former president Mike French, who held the position for a year. “This year has seen a number of projects, major and minor, completed which will ensure the club’s viability in the future,” Mr French said in his outgoing president’s repot. Two major projects completed by the club included the outside running rail of the track and crowd seating. “The club is in a position to enhance its reputation as the best non- TAB club in South Australia.” The connection of mains power to the club this year, which complements last year’s sewage connection allows the club to expand its ability to hoSt more major functions. Little Athletics jumping into second season

T

he second season of the Roxby Downs Little Athletics’ is set to kick off this Sunday, with children of all ages encouraged to come along.

With high jump to be held on the main oval this season and the possible inclusion of hurdle races later in the season, Vice President and Head Coach Lena Barrett said there would be something for everybody. “It hits all age groups from three year olds to under 16s,” Barrett said. “It is good because if there is a family with several siblings, parents can support them all at the same time. “But that is just part of it, there are many

good reasons to be a part of little athletics.” The sessions will be run on Sunday mornings from 8.30am, which Barrett was an ideal time during summer, allowing participants to run around before it gets to hot. The first season was a success for the centre with around 90 participants signing up for the in-demand program. For those new to the program, two ‘come-and-try’ sessions are allowed before a season commitment is required. A range of locals involved in the program have undertaken coaching courses to enhance trainings. More courses will be held throughout

the summer with the next to be held on November 5. Barrett said the sport is always after more volunteers to help out with on-theday activities. A few new faces have joined the committee this season while former treasurer, Bec Nichols has taken over from Bill Natt as President. Morwenna Stanford joins the executive committee as secretary, while Nissa Gordon has filled Nichols’ former role as treasurer. Registrations can be made at www.salaa. org.ay which incurs a $90 fee. East Roxby v Hornridge

E

ast Roxby took just one game to claim its first win under the clubs new name, with a crushing victory over Hornridge in the opening game of the Roxby Districts Cricket Association (RDCA) 2016/17 season.

Hornridge won the toss and elected to bat first on Friday night, which was catalysed by the hype of Glenn McGraths visit to town. The Wanderers were on the back foot from the word go with Sachira Muthukumarana ripping through their top order to have them reeling at 3/11 after seven overs in the T20 fixture. Stand in captain Michael Howard and Adam Malm steadied the ship briefly putting on their side’s highest partnership of 14. But the wicket of Howard for four brought about a major collapse, with the Wanderers losing their last six wickets for just 12 runs to be all out for a messy 37. Malm was the only Wanderers batsman to pass double figures (13) while for the Roos’ Muthukumarana and skipper Troy Mulders

were the chief destroyers with 3/8 and 3/9 respectively. In reply, the Roos took their time making the runs, but got over the line comfortably passing the small total of four wickets down in the 14th over. East Roxby opener Chamila Rathnajake batted through the innings to finish unbeaten on 11, with Andrew Moss and Nick Hill chipping in with 12 and 11 not out respectively. For the Wanderers, Howard (2/13), Michael Hammerling (1/8) and Rhett Winter (1/12) all tried their best to contain the Roos batsmen but the total was just too small.

Olympic Dam v Roxby Miners

I

n the second game held on Sunday, Olympic Dam kicked off from where they left last season, defeating the Miners in their first game for the season.

The Devils won the toss and elected to bat first in blustery conditions. First gamer for the club Todd Schumann got his side off to the best possible start, regularly finding the boundary with ease – his first five scoring shots all fours and sixes.

He continued to plunder the Miners bowling attack until he was caught in the deep for 45 off the bowling of Matt Skull. Skull did some damage to the OD middle order but Adrian Harris held down an end while wickets fell around him. This was until the late arrival of Ryan Selkirk saw the pair put on some late runs to guide their side to 7/141 after 20 overs. Schumann’s 45 was the top score for the Devils, with Adrian Harris providing some middle order resistance with 31 not out and Selkirk’s hitting at the end seeing him finish unbeaten on 25. For the Miners, Skull was the main wicket taker claiming 4/17 off his four while Captain Michael Nelson also chipped in with two wickets. In reply, the OD squeeze was on display early, once again, with no runs off the bat coming from the first four overs of new skipper Patrick Glover and debutant Nicholas Howard. Howard claimed his first scalp in just his second over, bowling Miners opener Grant Aitchison before being involved in a wicket a few overs later when he took a one handed screamer at mid-off to remove other opener

Steve Johnson. Nelson and Skull provided some middle order resistance but when Skull went for 14, trapped in front by another OD debutant Ben Vandeleur, and Howard returned to the attack claiming the wicket of Steve Lane and then Nelson – to another screamer this time from Vandeleur – the result was beyond doubt. Vella and Paul Trotta saw out the final four overs to see their side to 6/94 off 20, 47 runs short of the target set by the

Devils. Nelson was the top scorer for the Miners with 24, while Skull and Jon Sieburn chipped in with 14 each. With the ball, Howard was the chief destroyer, claiming figures of 3/9 in his first match for OD, while Adrian Harris also claimed two wickets. This week will see the first 40 over fixtures with OD to take on East Roxby in the Friday night game while the Miners will take on Hornridge on Saturday night.

Most riders ever at MotoX meet

T

he Roxby Downs Motocross Club’s annual night meet went off without a hitch on the weekend, with club President Clint Gow-Smith saying it was all thanks to the volunteers.

The meet had its highest ever amount of registered entries – 118 in total across 18 divisions– and used the night to also celebrate the club’s 21st birthday. Hundreds of attendees went out to the motocross track to see the action on Saturday night. “It all ran smoothly,” Gow Smith said. “All the volunteers made the event run smoothly. No one got hurt, and the junior lites racing was probably the highlight. There are some

very talented kids in there that are about to go into seniors, so it was great to see some of that talent up here in Roxby Downs. “In general, it was a good vibe.” Attracting some of the fastest motocross riders in the State, the competition on the night was fierce across all divisions – from the 50cc bikes right up to 450cc. “It was Steve Semark’s (450 expert open second place, senior feature race winner) first time to Roxby, but he was one of the fastest guys around years ago when he was a junior and early senior years,” Gow-Smith explained. “He just rides for a bit of fun now – but he can still keep up with the best of them. “Travis Lee Edwards, Thomas and Nathan

Walmsley have battled against each other all year, so it was good to get them up here. “And Nate Headland has had some very limited riding opportunities at the track this year, so it was good to see him get out there and stir them all up a bit.” Hitting two birds with one stone, the Club took the night as an opportunity to introduce a ‘Most Improved’ club award, and recognise the efforts of former committee members. Pioneering clubman and former Roxby Downs resident Gavin Cunningham was awarded with a life membership in acknowledgement of his contribution to the club, and club members Jack Secker, 10, and Tanner Turner, 16, were both awarded with the ‘Most

Improved’ award. Gow-Smith thanked in particular sponsors Red Mulga, Coates Hire and MPS for their support. In addition to these, he thanked other sponsors Topline Resources, Easternwell Resources, Redpath Mining, Minetech Engineering, The Monitor Newspaper, AB Chem, Roxby Earthmoving, WearX, Blackwoods, the Oasis Motel, CAT Rental, Bianco, Cowell Electric, Cape, Roxby Engineering and Fabrication, BSH and Monadelphous. “But most of all, I have to thank my endearing wife, Jody. Without her club and family support all done behind the scenes with little recognition, the night just wouldn’t happen,” he said.
