He said in rates released recently, Roxby Council had decreased the value of his property by $90,000. “My rates have gone up approximately 25 per cent compared to last year,” Mr Gates told The Monitor. “I don’t think it is justified, the council should be making smarter decisions with what money they would have (rather than just increase rates).” Mr Gates also owns

With the recent arrival of his first son, Mr Gates is yet to check with Council to see if he is eligible for the Rate Capping Rebate, but said he would when he gets the time. He said he will also be calling the council to express his concerns in coming weeks. cil misled rate payers by saying there would be a one percent increase on rates. They totally misled them to take some heat off their own incompetence.” According to Mr Oldfield, the business is now paying just shy of $15,000 a year to keep its doors open. “They now don’t even do the rubbish for businesses anymore,” Mr Oldfield exclaimed. He said his rates are now approximately 20% of the costs he endures for running a business in town. “It’s unpalatable how the council put up this mirage of trying to bring or support local businesses,” he said. Mr Oldfield attended a Draft Business Plan consultation meeting in July, at which he said locals had been misled in rates increases. A former Liberal candidate for Giles, Mr Oldfield proposed a number of different views on future governance for Roxby Downs, but was disconcerted with the responses he received from panellists. “I got told by one panellist that they were an academic, had more experience in governance, and knew what’s best for Roxby, despite having not lived here before. “I believe tax payers should have more say, because I am led to believe we are now picking up approximately 80 per cent of the town’s annual budget. “It feels like we are repeating history and governance has been backdated to 1936, where it seemed public opinion didn’t count nor matter.” Mr Oldfield, who has been a businessman and supporter of local events in Roxby for over 10 years, said he would be concerned how future residential and commercial investors would be attracted to the town with the current high running costs.

Love of job earns local day care regional award

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

L

ocal Katie Tilley has been named an ‘Excellence in Family Day Care Centre’ regional award winner for the third time recently.

Mrs Tilley, who is registered with Far North Family Day Care, currently has eight families under her care. She said while she doesn’t do the work for the awards, her successes come easily because she enjoys what she does so much. “The family and kids are amazing, I have not had a bad day at work here ever,” Mrs Tilley told The Monitor. “The relationships I form as well are what make this job so amazing, and makes it feel like it’s not just work. “But I am definitely passionate and love what I do.” Mrs Tilley said her favourite part about her role was watching and being a part of each child’s growth and development.

The friendly nature of the service and the closeness she has with the children and the parents have allowed her to develop a number of strong relationships with the families. She said she has such a strong connection to the children, it is like they are her own. Mrs Tilley said she was blessed to have such supportive families attending her centre and they were the reason she had received this award. Now in its fifth year, Family Day Care Australia Chief Executive Officer Andrew Paterson said he had been overwhelmed by the heartfelt stories he had heard from families across the country about the important role family day care plays in their lives. “Educators like Katie hold a special place in the hearts of the families who nominated them,” Mr Paterson said. “There is no greater responsibility than to be entrusted with the care and education of a young child, every nomination reflected

the importance to parents of the safe, nurturing and educational environment that is family day care. “To be named regional winner is recognition of Katie’s dedication to providing quality early childhood education, but also to the wonderful and unique relationship between educators like Katie and the children in their care.” Katie now goes in the running to be named SA winner. Excellence in Family Day Care national winners will be announced at a gala dinner in November. As well as the honour of being named best in the business, State and national winners will share in more than $20,000 worth of prizes including educational resources and training packages. Mrs Tilley said anyone interested in becoming an educator and having a rewarding job like hers should contact the Family Education Business Centre on 1300 551 890.

Roxby embraces a positive body image

L

ast week, 58 locals attended the first local screening and combined charity event of ‘Embrace’ – an Australian movie that endeavours to uncover why poor body image has become a global epidemic.

Recently returned local Kellie Thomson set about organising the screening upon finding out it wasn’t scheduled to visit the Outback Cinema. She then recognised the opportunity to use the screening to fundraise for The Butterfly Foundation – an Australian charity that represents people affected by eating disorders and negative body image. Mrs Thomson said the event was well received by all – and its popularity has resulted in a subsequent screen-

ing on Wednesday, October 26. “It went incredibly well, speaking to the attendees after the screening, they enjoyed the movie, it made them laugh, cry but also I think it has helped them start some conversations with themselves around body image and acceptance,” she told The Monitor. “People found it inspiring and it has made people start to question what they see in the media as being the ‘norm’.” As well as the movie screening, local businesses Kin Balance, Tupperware consultant Alyce Storrier, Intimo consultant Sue Napper, Kelsey’s Beauty, Kindred Yoga and roxbylink while Robern Menz donated a raffle door prize to help with fundraising. In total, $530 was raised

Leah Mattner, event organiser Kellie Thomson and Meaghan Kiely at the first Embrace movie screening last week.

for The Butterfly Foundation through both ticket sales and the raffle. “Looking at the message of the film, The Butterfly Foundation just seemed like a natural fit. They do a lot of work around body image including running workshops at schools and businesses,” Mrs Thomson explained.

She thanked film distributers Fan-Force, the local businesses that donated to the cause, Leah Mattner and Meaghan Kiely and all who attended. The repeat event in October will only go ahead if the minimum of 42 tickets are sold by Wednesday, October 12.

“I had heard from a lot of people who had missed out and really wanted to see the film,” Mrs Thomson said. “I’m quietly confident that we’ll get there as in less than 12 hours after posting this on local social media channels, 20 tickets were already sold!” Tickets can be purchased by visiting https://fan-force.

Ignore the ‘Aussie ocker’ and see a doctor

R

oxby Downs Area School students Renee Wurfel and Isobel Anderson travelled to Adelaide recently, to find out why less than one fifth of qualified professionals in the science, technology, engineering and mining (STEM) fields are women.

Local man Graham Warren has just been through a battle with prostate cancer. He is urging men as young as 40 to get tested regularly.

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

I

t is common for Aussie blokes to ignore an illness, lump or bump because they are embarrassed, think they don’t have time or just don’t want to go to the doctor.

It is this passive mentality that nearly cost local man Graham Warren his life recently. Mr Warren was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April this year, a condition that was detected from an overdue blood test taken by local GP, Dr Simon Lockwood. Mr Warren said he did not display any of the usual prostate cancer symptoms, and had been talking himself out of his yearly doctor’s appointment, reasoning with himself, “if I’m not sick why do I need to go to the doctors?” “I was out on the tractor doing some volunteer work at the golf course and I noticed Page 4 -- Wednesday, September 28, 2016

a lump on my leg,” he told The Monitor. “So I went and saw Simon - and it was nothing - but he said, ‘you haven’t had a blood test in a while!’ so I had one while I was there. “I had it (the blood test) Tuesday, and on Wednesday I got a call from him saying you better come in quick. He told me the bad news, referred me to a specialist in Adelaide and I was diagnosed then.” From there Mr Warren went through a biopsy, treatment and scans before he had the cancer removed, which was followed by five days in hospital. He has only just now, almost six months later, finished treatment. “All this could have been averted if I hadn’t been so pig headed,” he said. Doctors recommend regular check-ups for prostate cancer once men hit the age of 50 but Mr Warren said men should go at least

once a year even as early as 40 to be on the safe side, especially if there is a family history of the disease. He said the earlier prostate cancer is detected, the easier it is to get rid of and the less likely it is to cause more serious issues. “If I can put the message out there and get an extra two people in to the doctor’s surgery in the next few weeks that is a win for me,” Mr Warren said. “It is nothing to be embarrassed about, it is just a blood test.” Mr Warren said his family and friends have been very supportive through his battle, even calling upon legendary former Adelaide Oval Curator Les Burdett, who had been through the same fight. He said Mr Burdett had the same message about early detection and getting regular check-ups.

The students attended the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) Women in Leadership luncheon to listen to key speakers such as BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam, Asset President Jacqui McGill, who delivered their thoughts on the importance of women working in STEM industries. “I didn’t know women (in)equality was that bad but also, how much improvement they have made (in sexual equality),” Isobel said. “It starts with education and women being able to do (study) subjects now that years ago it wasn’t likely they would have been able to.” Currently Isobel and Renee are the only two girls in year 11 science at RDAS, a subject the pair said they both enjoyed. Renee said it was a positive sign seeing so many key women figures at the luncheon that had found success in typically male dominated fields. She said it all came down to the simple mantra of ‘having a goal and going for it’. The RDAS students were flown to the luncheon by BHP Billiton, where they joined other schools from South Australia and guest speakers. Speakers on the day included Ms McGill, UniSA Research and Innovation Vice President Professor Tanya Monro and BP Exploration and Production Managing Director Claire Fitzpatrick. The luncheon tied in well with RDAS having recently recieved funding for STEM facility upgrades, which Renee said would be highly beneficial for the school. She said she would like to see the money spent on new tech equipment and more practical elements to STEM subjects. BY PATRICK GLOVER THE MONITOR - Your Community Newspaper

The day the music died WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

R

oxby Downs will be left without a music teacher at the end of this week, with the Arts and Culture Forum unable to drum up the funding needed to continue the fly in/fly out music teacher program.

Music teacher Mark Richardson has been travelling to and from Roxby Downs since June

last year to run lessons with students, but without the proper funding the Forum will be unable to keep this service going. The Forum was attempting to raise $20,000 to continue the service but was only able to reach $1414 by its deadline. “We have exhausted all our options, we tried to get the funding required but we were unsuccessful which is sad,” said Roxby Downs Arts and Culture Forum member Rachel Young. “Mark is coming up and back

and if the funding is going to stop there is not enough students for him to keep coming. “So this means his students are going to be at a loose end.” Mrs Young said the program was very valuable for local children and adults and it would be ‘quite sad’ to see the program finish at the conclusion of term three. She said the Forum would keep an ear out for any funding opportunities which might allow it to re-ignite the fly in/fly

out teacher initiative. “We are not forgetting about it all together, we just need to spend some time on other things for now,” Mrs Young said. “The town has a range of different priorities at the moment and it’s a shame music isn’t one of them.” Former local music teacher Owen Lewis has been conducting lessons via Skype with some of his students but Mrs Young said this had not been an ideal process.

Woomera health service up for tender

T

he Department of Defence has issued a request for tender for the supply of primary health care to Woomera, it has been revealed.

Local Roxby Downs doctor, Simon Lockwood, has been servicing the town for the past three years. Dr Lockwood’s practice, the Roxby Downs Family Practice, has been operating a drop in service for the past two and a half years treating a wide variety of patients from local residents to Defence personnel and tourists. A Defence Spokesperson said the tender was all part of the normal procurement process.

“Air Force places a high priority on the health of its members and their families and this tender has been released in order to maintain effective access to primary health care for Air Force personnel and the Woomera community,” the spokesperson said. Dr Lockwood was unable to comment on the tender process but Woomera based nurse David Cranston said it would be business as usual until informed otherwise. The Woomera service offers all the same services as its Roxby Downs equivalent including electrocardiogram (ECG), taking blood or anything else that is required. Mr Cranston, who worked in the Royal

Adelaide Hospital Emergency Services for seven years prior to his current role, said if he is unable to help a patient Dr Lockwood or Dr Natalia Bezrukova are always on call to deal with the situation. The practice is open 9am – 3pm, Monday to Friday, and Dr Lockwood is on site Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Mr Cranston said health promotions are also conducted out of the practice and Dr Bezrukova also attends on a regular basis and runs women’s health sessions. In emergency situations or highway crashes the practice has been used as a staging post for emergency services. BY PATRICK GLOVER

Rising drink driving charges a real concern

F

our drink drivers have been charged within the space of a week in Roxby Downs recently, raising concerns of the frequency of serious driving infringements in the community.

On Tuesday, September 13, police were called to a crash 13 kilometres south of Roxby Downs where a 35 year-old Wandearah man was involved in a single vehicle collision. He recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.224. The driver, who was not injured in the crash, was arrested and charged with drink driving at the incident on Olympic Way. He was issued with an instant 12 months loss of licence,

and had his car impounded for 28 days. He has also been charged with drink driving and aggravated driving without due care and was bailed to appear in the Roxby Downs Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 5. Later that week, at 1am on Friday, 16 September, a 23-year-old Roxby Downs woman recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.151 while driving on Aquila Boulevard. She was reported for drink driving, her vehicle was impounded and she received an instant 12 months loss of licence. The next night, just before 1.30am on Saturday 17 September, police pulled over a vehicle in Pine Cres-

cent for a mobile driver test. The driver, a 39-year-old Roxby Downs man, recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.100. He was reported for drink driving, his vehicle was impounded and he received an instant six months loss of licence. Further to that, at about 11pm on the same day, a 46-year-old Roxby Downs man recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.096, also driving in Pine Crescent. He was reported for drink driving, his vehicle was impounded and he received an instant six months loss of licence. All three drivers will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

In other police news, a man from South Australia’s Far North appeared in court on Monday with child sex offences. Detectives from the Port Augusta Criminal Investigation Branch arrested the 32-year-old man on Sunday, September 25, following a joint investigation between CIB, Special Crimes Investigation Branch, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Australian Federal Police. The man was charged with two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, producing and disseminating child exploitation material (aggravated) and failing to comply with his reporting obligations in

relation to the National Child Offender Register. It will be alleged that the offences involve the abuse of two children under 14 years of age, which was recorded and disseminated via the internet. The man was not granted bail and appeared in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Monday. Members of the public who have any information about anyone involved in child exploitation are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at http:// crimestopperssa.com.au - You can remain anonymous.

Celebrating the C F S

Cadets program continues to grow WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he CFS cadets program continues to grow with six new members signing up in the past three months.

The squad, which has grown to 22 members, take part in the same training as the adult volunteers conducting hazmat, defibrillator and first aid training along with a variety of other drills with a few games thrown in. CFS cadet co-ordinator Stephen Scarr said it was beneficial for the cadets to have the opportunity to run through these drills now so they

were prepared for when they moved up to the more senior ranks. Mr Scarr said the cadets were getting better with practice and had been good at retaining the knowledge taught during the sessions. Cadets must be between the ages of 12 and 18, and can begin attending senior training sessions at the age of 16. While they are unable to attend live fires until they are over the age of 18, with parent permission they can attend basic call outs in the company of an adult from 16. Once they have completed cadets they are free to attend all fires and head south to join

up with task forces to help with out of town fires when needed. Mr Scarr said the parents had provided the cadets with plenty of support and along with the senior CFS volunteers had made the running of the program possible. Training is held on Mondays from 6.30pm until 8pm. The cadets held a barbecue and movie night recently as a team bonding session away from the drills and training.

he Roxby Downs Country Fire Service (CFS) has been nominated for the Jones Harley Toole Community Road Safety Award recently, recognising their work in trying to improve road safety and reduce road trauma.

Local man and Roxby Downs CFS brigade captain Brett Atkins nominated his team for the award and said they thoroughly deserved the award for the amount of work they do. “These guys deserve to be recognised,” he said. “I nominated the brigade to show off what they do and recognise them for what they actually do rather than based on what the public sees. “They are always pulling bodies out of wreckages and putting them in body bags or on stretchers or heading out to the highway and attending call outs between Port Augusta and Glendambo.” Mr Atkins said his brigade haS been ‘quite busy’ in recent times, attending four vehicle accidents in the last two months. As well as attending call outs, they are involved with the Road Awareness Program (RAP), the Roxby Downs Road Safety and Zone Emergency committees and helping at community events such as the recent Desert Dash. “We are hoping to also do an exercise in the main street at the November Market Day,” Mr Atkins said. “We have discussed a demonstration that will show the people what we do at a crash scene – what we actually do.” Mr Atkins said the holiday season was coming up as well so road safety was extra important with a lot of locals heading away to spend Christmas and New Years with their families. Local children celebrate author’s 100th birthday with golden ticket hunt WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

L

ocal children received the ‘Roald Dahl experience’ at the Roxby Downs Library last week, when they partook in a golden ticket hunt from Monday, September 12 to Friday, September 16.

Drawing inspiration from Roald Dahl’s renowned children’s fiction ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, the children aged between five and 10 years old joined in the ticket hunt from 3pm until 5pm each day. The week long celebrations were held to mark the 100th birthday of the legendary South Welsh children’s author Roald Dahl, who wrote Char-

lie and the Chocolate Factory along with other famed children’s novels such as The BFG (Big, Friendly Giant) and James and the Giant Peach. “It was such a fun week, everyone enjoyed it,” said roxbylink librarian Mikyla Hick. “I was so pleased with the children’s behaviour and once they found (the) golden ticket they were so excited. “Each day we would see more/different children come in.” Each lucky finder of the golden ticket received a Willy Wonka show bag. (pictured right). “Some children shared their winning prize around with the other participants and some just helped each other out which was lovely,” Ms Hick said.

A

large crowd of around 1000 locals turned out to enjoy the World Food and Music Festival in Richardson Place on the weekend.

Locals got the chance to celebrate the vast array of cultures within the Roxby Downs Community and were treated to music, food

and workshops to mark the occasion. Roxby Downs Multicultural Forum member Sasha Yantewo said the World Food and Music Festival committee was ‘wrapped’ with the way the event ran and was thrilled to see so many people attend. “They were just happy to see all their plans come to fruition and to see the community come together for the event,” Mrs Yantewo said.

Kristie Reschke, Joe D’Arrigo, Centaine Casserly, Hannah Grohs and Kiani Gilbert.

“The food was amazing with the community kitchen a sell out and Beyond India had a queue all night.” Mrs Yantewo said the music was also a highlight of the night with the Three Amigos Plus One the stand out performer. The band’s four members spent the night roving the crowd, interacting with attendees and the children enjoyed it just as much. Alan Sumner and Har-

monny also entertained the crowd throughout the night with their musical performances. Of the 1000 attendees Mrs Yantewo said there was a wide range present from families to singles and an array of the different cultures being celebrated represented. She said the committee thanked its sponsors for their support on the night. The next event will be held in two years.

Scouts quarter master gets recognition WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

M

artyn Gobbie’s service to the Roxby Downs Scouts as a Quarter Master for three years and volunteer for six has warranted his awarding of July’s Volunteer of the Month.

Having started as a Scout’s volunteer after his son joined the group, Mr Gobbie has progressed from Joeys up through the ranks to be quarter master. “It is pretty humbling, I don’t do it for this reason (getting awards),” he said. “I do it for the kids and I couldn’t commit to be (sic) a leader so I thought I’d help out this way.”

Mr Gobbie said it was beneficial to see the scouts getting out, being part of the community and doing things for themselves. He said volunteers play an important part in the community and it shouldn’t be left up to a few locals to do all the work. “Just do it, there are limited resources in each group of people in town so we can’t stand back and let others do it all,” Mr Gobbie said.

“We (the Scouts) get support from amongst the community which helps us.” Fellow Roxby Downs Scouts volunteer Cherie Gaskin said Mr Gobbie is a ‘great help’ around the group and always goes above and beyond his duties. This is not the only award he has received recently, also being given the Scouts SA Special Service Award.

Community get insight to Carrapateena WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

M

i n i n g co mp a ny OZ Minerals held community meetings in Roxby Downs, Woomera and Port Augusta last week, ahead of ramping up it’s Carrapateena copper and gold mine project in the near future.

Around 30 locals attended the Roxby Downs session at the Community Youth Centre on Tuesday, September 20 to hear about recent developments of the project, which is located in the eastern margin of the Gawler Craton, south east of Roxby Downs. OZ Minerals Technical Services Group Manager Katie Hulmes said it was important for the community to hear what was happening at Carrapateena, and have them know the company was available for support if needed. “At the end of this month we’ll be marking the start of the underground decline that will allow us to access the copper resource but any formal OZ Minerals board approval won’t occur until early next year,” Ms Hulmes said. “So right now it was about telling the community what we’re planning, how we’re progressing and

what we’ll be doing to ensure any benefits flow into the region. “We will be consulting with communities across the outback and Upper Spencer Gulf regions on a regular basis as we move this project through its next stages.” Ms Hulmes, who was present at the session in Roxby Downs, said it was really positive to see so many people turn out the session. “It’s really important for OZ Minerals that the local community both hears what’s happening at Carrapateena and that we hear from them so we appreciated the turnout,” she said. Ms Hulmes said OZ Minerals would remain transparent throughout the process, especially when it came to significant topics like job and economic opportunities, particularly in places like Roxby Downs. She said the company would look to work with the community during this project, which could become Australia’s largest new resources project, if approved. As well as the community meetings, Ms Hulmes said the OZ Minerals team working on the Carrapateena project already spent time in the regions and the enthusiasm and interest communities had shown towards it was a major positive for the company.

A community meeting was held in Roxby Downs last week, regarding OZ Minerals copper deposit, Carrapateena.

he Roxby Academy of Dance (R AD) students have done their home town proud, placing fifth and third at their first ever ‘Get the Beat’ national finals last week.

RAD’s under 15 hip hop team came fifth in their division, while Lucy Chamberlain and Chloe Turley came third in the jazz duo category at the finals in Caloundra, Queensland. RAD Director Lana ‘Ms Lana’ Chamberlain said the dancers ‘nailed it’ putting in flawless routines. “It was really good, I am so proud of them,” Ms Lana told The Monitor. “All the parents agreed that they were amazing and everyone was really proud.”

Ms Lana said it was an ‘awesome experience’ for all the students, who loved it, and the trip also gave the squad some time together for team bonding. A final day surprise trip to Aussie World to partake in paddle boarding, canoeing and other activities was one of the highlights for the students and as a ‘well done gift’ from Ms Lana. “It was a good chance for the Roxby dancers to see the different styles in the same category from across the country. “There were definitely different styles in Sydney and Queensland, so it was great to be able to see those other styles of hip hop,” Ms Lana added. Bush Blitz announces its first exciting discovery

T

he Bush Blitz team believe they have discovered its first new species from their trip to the Roxby Downs region earlier this month.

Bee expert Dr Remko Leijs, one of 16 scientists to make the trip as part of the Bush Blitz national species discovery program, believes he has discovered a new species of teddy bear bee. Dr Leijs said this could be an exciting discovery, if proven to be a new discovery, with the teddy bear bee just one of hundreds of native Australian bee species. “A new species of teddy bear bee would be really exciting because they are so important for both the pollination of native plans as well as vegetables,” Dr Leijs, South Australian Museum associate, said.

“Teddy bear bees and blue banded bees are Australian native bee species that can pollinate plants like tomatoes because they use ‘buzz’ pollination. Honey bees, put simply, don’t ‘buzz’.” Bush Blitz manager Jo Harding said it had been a successful trip and had been beneficial for them visiting such an interesting, relatively unknown area. “This region is of great interest to us because it has been identified as an area important for biodiversity, but relatively unknown,” Ms Harding said. “With a massive 75 per cent of Australia’s biodiversity still unknown to science, it’s not surprising we have discovered over 1,200 new species over the last seven years.

Page 12 -- Wednesday, September 28, 2016

“When it comes to exciting new discoveries, it looks like the area around Roxby Downs has not disappointed.” Scientists from the South Australian and Queensland Museums, South Australian and Victorian Herbarium and both Flinders and Adelaide Universities were searching the area for everything from plants and reptiles to spiders and bees. Bush Blitz is Australia’s largest species discovery program and is a partnership between the Australian Government, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities and Earthwatch. Eight BHP Billiton employees were a part of the Bush Blitz team, which included one local. BHP Olympic Dam Community www.themonitor.com.au

Lead, Chad Menzies, said it had been very exciting to host the Bush Blitz team. “It is an excellent opportunity to showcase our unique region and for the visiting team to work closely with the local traditional owners, the Kokatha, and our community,” Mr Menzies said. Arid Recovery General Manager Katherine Tuft also sang the praises of the Bush Blitz team and said she was pleased to have such a focus on the region. She said while Arid Recovery had more of a mammal focus they would still look over the Bush Blitz team’s data to learn about any new species and see if they needed to implement any plans or strategies going forwards. Plans in place for McGrath visit

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

A

ustralian Cricket legend Glenn McGrath’s upcoming trip to Roxby Downs on Friday, October 14 will be as fast as his bowling; with McGrath in town for one night only.

The wider community will have a chance to see McGrath at the opening game of the Roxby Downs Cricket Association 2016-17 season, and hear him speak at the Sportsman’s Night event following the game. “We are very excited to have Glenn McGrath here to celebrate the community’s contribution for the great cause that is Pink Stumps Day,” said former RDCA

president and organiser of the event Paul Trotta. “While we don’t hold these kind of events for the accolades, it is always nice to receive recognition like this. “We are hoping to see as many community members out on the Friday night as possible to welcome him and give him the chance to thank as many as he can.” A yet to be confirmed master of ceremonies (MC) will run the Sportsman’s event, directing questions of various nature to McGrath, and facilitating questions from the crowd. McGrath’s jam packed schedule starts with a visit to junior cricket training, followed by a meet and great with the RDCA committee, before descending on the town oval for the opening

game between Andamooka and Hornridge at 730pm. Following the conclusion of the game at 830pm, McGrath will remain at the oval for his address at the Sportsman’s Night. “We are very lucky to be able to have him cover so many activities and groups in such a short period of time,” Trotta said. Current president of the RDCA Adam Malm said it was a great coup for the association and the town to get someone of McGrath’s calibre to Roxby Downs. Food stalls will accompany an open bar, and be run by local community organisations at the oval, including the local Royal Flying Doctor Service Auxiliary
