Childrens’ centre to complete local early learning WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

F

ollowing her visit on Friday, UK’s Pen Green Centre founder and author Margy Whalley said Roxby Downs has the potential to build one of the best integrated child learning spaces in the State.

With a proposed small children’s centre refurbishment and upgrade in the pipelines, Mrs Whalley said its creation would complete Roxby’s fantastic early learning set up, which includes the already well established child care centres, kindergarten and library. The proposal was announced by the Department for Education and Child Development in June as part of the 2015/16 state budget. Money allocated by the Government will transform the Roxby Downs Kindergarten into a fully comprehensive children’s centre offering health and family services and community development activities. “A small children’s centre would be a fantastic inclusion for Roxby Downs and Andamooka,” Mrs Whalley told The Monitor last week. “It would be a good next step and the children’s centre would provide even more integration. Wildlife Hotline heats up with the weather WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he Wildlife Hotline has once again been ringing off the hook, as Roxby Downs prepares to enter another snake season. Locals began phoning in around a month ago, with three snake callouts in the past week and a half alone, according to local snake catchers. “They (the snakes) are definitely out and about because we have already begun getting calls,” said Roxby Council Environment Community Projects Officer Anni Giles. “They will be coming out of hibernation now looking for a mate and looking for food.” During the last snake season, which ran from October 1, 2015, to March 30, 2016, 111 calls were made to the Wildlife Hotline including 59 snake callouts.

are in their (the snakes’) home so we are going to come across snakes and other wildlife,” Ms Kiely said. Snakes are not the only creatures the hotline deals with, it also assists with injured wildlife, birds and lizards in your backyard. The service is primarily for residential areas, or people who have made contact with an animal whilst on the roads. If you would like to become a volunteer with the Wildlife Hotline contact Mrs Giles at Roxby Council on (08) 8671 0010.

Mrs Giles said if anyone sees a snake they must remain calm, keep a safe distance from it, contact the Wildlife Hotline (0497 808 315) and keep the snake in sight until help arrives. The Wildlife Hotline is a volunteer initiative of the Roxby Downs Environment Forum and is a free service based on the availability of appropriately trained volunteers. Meaghan Kiely is one of theoe volunteers and said she loves being a part of the service, especially catching snakes. She said there are many benefits that come from being a Wildlife Hotline Volunteer including being able to reassure locals they are safe and that snakes will not attack unless provoked. Helping community members feel comfortable by removing snakes from their home she said was another benefit. “It is an important service, we

What is your most important asset?

M

ost people think their most important asset is their house, their superannuation or their car. Wrong, think again!

Your greatest asset is you, and your ability to earn an income and provide for your family. What would happen if that ability was taken away from you? How would your family survive? Australians are very good at insuring their cars, contents and homes but sadly not their lives. Only 5.3 per cent of Australians have total and permanent disability insurance cover, only 2.5 per cent of Australians have trauma insurance and only 7.1 per cent of Australians have income protection insurance. Did you know that two out of five Australians will suffer a critical illness before they reach 65? Did you also know that four million people in Australia or 18.5 per cent report having a disability? There are many different types of insurance policies out there and therefore much confusion about when and what to buy. A Certified Financial Strategist is a person who understands the real needs of families and the complexities of the choices which are now available. Give Anne Marie Seagrim a call on (08) 8642 6888 to have a free appraisal of your insurance policies and make sure they are right for you. All statistics from Roy Morgan Research.

The under 15 hip hop team and duo Lucy Chamberlain and Chloe Turley took part in the Get the Beat national titles however The Monitor was unable to get competition results before deadline on Monday. Prior to the squad’s departure they were able to raise $13,194 for the trip with the help of the community. The money helped compensate squad members for part of the cost of their trip. Ms Lana said the dancers would like to thank all their sponsors for their support in the lead up to the titles. Gold sponsors - BHP Billiton, CWA, the Desert Car Club, Redpath, Smartline, Sodexo and silver spon-

As well as bronze sponsors – Blackwoods, Embroidery For You, Hootabella, Mamma Jen and Rooster, Simply Floored and silent sponsors – Desert Scents, Heather Turley, Melanie Aitchison, Rowan Ramsey, Seaside Vets and DJ Q. “A big thanks to everyone that’s helped out and assisted, we love you all,” said RAD director Lana “Ms Lana” Chamberlain. Ms Lana said the dancers were excited in the week leading up to the performance and were ready for the challenge of their first national competition. “They are all ready but we are also ready to see what else is out there,” she said. “We are going over there to compete but also to learn.” The Monitor will have all the results and photos from the RAD time at the Get the Beat national titles.

Taking part in the Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser for the second year in a row, Ms Frankish said she is simply doing it to give back to those people who need it most. “Leukaemia touches so many people, so for me it is about giving back,” she said. “We had a great response last year from (Roxby Downs) Tavern patrons, but this year we are looking to reach out a little more and get the community involved.” The Leukaemia Foundation UGLY (Understandable-Generous-Likeable-You) Bartender of the Year aims to raise money and awareness for leukaemia research. Since its inception in 2009, the campaign has raised over $8 million to help people with blood cancer. This year, along with Friday night raffles and ‘UGLY’ cocktails at the Tavern, Ms Frankish will be attending market days and running a ‘Blue Sunday’ in October. The major event will take place at The Oasis hotel on Sunday, October 16, with $5 entry giving attendees access to a range of stalls filled with Christmas ideas, as well as a high tea and bar facilities. Cookies and cupcakes will also be on sale at the Tavern and at upcoming Market Days throughout the fundraising campaign, thanks to the Roxby Bakery, with proceeds added to Ms Frankish’s total. Ms Frankish is hoping to build on her success from last year, and rally the community spirit Roxby Downs so often exudes. “The people of Roxby Downs are always on board when it comes to things like this which is awesome,” she said. Ms Frankish has already begun fundraising, participating in the mini market in the Roxby Traders Mitre 10 carpark recently and will continue her campaign until November 14.

Public meeting the start of transparency?

I

n a bid to improve transparency, the Roxby Downs Council will for the first time ever hold a public council meeting in the council chambers boardroom on Wednesday, September 28. Chaired by acting Administrator Geoff Whitbread, the meeting will address any decisions made by council with in-depth explanation behind those decisions to be provided by Mr Whitbread to the public. The meeting comes just weeks after the Roxby Council Governance Review Committee draft recommendations called for a more transparent governing body. Mr Whitbread said the meeting would be ‘unique’ but would run the same as any other council meeting would. The topics presented at the meeting will not be open to the public for input or questions, however the community have an opportunity to submit questions to be added to the meeting’s agenda before the night. “It will be a unique experience,” Mr Whitbread said. “It will be a first for Roxby Downs but it is appropriate as we move towards a more open and transparent governing body.” The agenda will be published online prior to the meeting and minutes will be posted on the Council website following. “We are trying to make this as friendly possible,” Mr Whitbread added. Roxby Downs Show n’ Shine set to return after two year hiatus

T

he Roxby Downs Show n’ Shine has been booked in for Saturday, October 15 after a two-year hiatus, and organiser Kat McKinnon is encouraging locals to register their interest.

The staff at Auto Pro Roxby Downs have been instrumental in organising local show and shine events on and off for the last decade. “We had customers that were always telling us about their cars, and we had lots of customers that were working on their cars, so we thought it was an opportunity for them to showcase their pride and joy,” Kat said recently. From classic cars and muscle cars, to motorbikes and sprint cars, the event showcases them all. “We have had everything from classic cars to brand new cars that have just rolled off the production line,” Kat said. “Lots of muscle cars. The best thing I ever saw was Barry Mitchells GT falcon - and he let me drive it home!” This year’s event will also offer children’s face painting and show bags, as well as live streaming from local radio station 105.5 RoxFM. To register your interest in this year’s Show n’ Shine, call Kat at Auto Pro on (08) 8671 2200 or pop into the store during business hours.

Local racer ‘Wobbly’ took his sprintcar down to the Show n’ Shine in 2012, stirring interest amongst locals.

Dear Editor, A staggering one in three of people reading this letter will face at least one natural disaster in their lifetime. And after the disaster hits, sadly there’s one thing most will also experience. Regret about not being better prepared. In Emergency Preparedness Week, Red Cross is calling on all Australians to take action before it’s too late. We want all Australians to be prepared for an emergency, whether it’s as large as a bushfire, cyclone or flood, or as personal as a family crisis . Too many conversations after an emergency begin with “I wish I had…”. People wish they’d taken the kids’ baby photographs; kept their passports safe; upped their insurance; looked in on their neighbours. For decades, we’ve seen first-hand the trauma, stress, and hardship that

Kingoonya cricket event returns again WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he annual Kingoonya Hotel Main Street Cricket Match is ‘the game that stops the town’ - lyrically speaking – and will be held this year on Saturday, October 15. With the pitch located in the middle of the main street, cricket takes the main stage and the roads are closed down for the day. It is the ultimate outback cricket setting

with only a third of the pitch matted - meaning bowlers can only bowl from one end beers on the field are essential and if you don’t feel like standing you can bring a chair onto to the ground to make yourself at home. “Normally we have about four of five teams come up,” said organiser and owner of the Kingoonya Hotel Alistair Murray. “Two teams play each other and every player has a bowl and you can’t get out without making a run and if you reach 20 you are out. “The team with the highest score at the end of the day wins.”

The annual event, which began in 1937, before taking a break from 1984-2006, used to be a contest between shearers from Kingoonya and Glendambo or other towns nearby. However, the day has recently expanded to include teams from Ceduna, Streaky Bay, Smokey Bay and even teams from Adelaide - sometimes. “Anybody can play – last year was a classic example we had a group that were working for the University of Adelaide that were returning home and drove through Kingoonya,” Mr Murray said.

“They stopped to watch but ended up entering a team so that is how random it can be.” No matter the skill level, anyone can play, with children allowed and underarms accepted. Mr Murray said each team’s highest scorer in these matches a lot of the time was a player by the name of ‘Wides’. The prize at the end, the Kingoonya Hotel Main Street Cricket Match Cup - a tin mug with the winners name written on in permanent marker.

Funding now available for remote airstrips A pplications for the four th round of the Remote Airstrip Upgrade Programme are now open, giving isolated Australian communities the chance to improve current airstrip infrastructure. “We recognise the difficulties remote communities face accessing services in regional centres and how much they rely on air links for supplies, especially during the wet

season,” Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said recently. “People living in remote areas appreciate the importance of good transport links and how they underpin their communities – that’s why it is essential that anyone seeking funding to upgrade their local airstrip starts preparing their application now. Round four of the programme will be open for six weeks.

“This programme is a real boost for remote communities, by improving access to the rest of Australia and the delivery of essential services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service and other emergency medical services,” Mr Ramsey said. In the third round of the programme, 52 remote airstrip projects were funded including Marree, north of Roxby Downs. “It would be great to see more

projects from this region succeed, so I encourage applicants to work up their submissions and put them forward for consideration. “In the remote areas of South Australia access for emergency services to use aircraft for retrieval can be a matter of life and death.” Applications can be lodged by community groups, Indigenous organisations and local governments in remote areas and will be assessed

on their ability to improve access and safety at remote airstrips to benefit communities. Further information on the assessment criteria can be found in the guidelines. Applications will close on Friday, October 21, 2016. Information, including the application form, can be found at www.infrastructure.gov.au/ aviation/regional/index.aspx.

Race two of Birdsville Races Super Sunday program.

Birdsville races a success despite downpour

O

n a picture perfect sunny day, history was made in Birdsville on Sunday, September 4 with a female jockey and trainer duo taking out the main Birdsville Cup race for the first time in 134 years.

The longest running horse race in Australia, known as ‘The Melbourne Cup of the Outback’ welcomed thousands of revelers for a condensed ‘Super Sunday’ program. The program, which was altered because of previous heavy rainfall, combined 11 highlight races from the originally scheduled Friday and Saturday competitions. The day’s program is Australia’s biggest single thoroughbred race day for 2016, outstripping even the famed Melbourne Cup day. A stellar 10-horse field contested the prestigious 1600m Birdsville Cup, with Darwin-based jockey Kayla Cross storming to victory on the Heather Lehmann-trained More Alpha. “This horse was a bit trying earlier on. I was keen to sell it but it’s my husband’s favourite, so we kept him and I persevered,” Ms Lehmann said. “He’s come good and it’s a great Father’s Day present.” The heavy rain turned Birdsville’s iconic red racetrack to sludge and forced the closure of all roads to and from the township. “We worked on the track until late last night. It was a case of the outback spirit coming through – we were determined that the rain wouldn’t beat us and we’d host the races today,” said Birdsville Race Club Vice President Gary Brook. “It’s been a roller coaster of emotions this week – and when we arrived track-

side this morning, I felt quite emotional. It’s been an awesome two days and I’d like to thank everyone who put in such a massive effort to get us to where we are.” Event organisers hosted an impromptu phantom race day on the Saturday to entertain thousands of punters who had made it into Birdsville ahead of the downpours. As in previous years, Fashion on the Field was a highlight of the Saturday program, with a classic, contemporary and novelty divisions judged by the Today Show’s Natalia Cooper. Entertainment and food also remained key drawcards, with luxury outback dining, film screenings, live music and Fred Brophy’s infamous Boxing troupe all keeping crowds bustling with excitement over the extended program in the township of Birdsville. This year’s Races were also preceded by the RFDS (Royal Flying Doctors’) Fun Run, which saw more than 100 competitors race a 6.1 kilometre dirt track to raise more than $4,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. “This year has certainly been a memorable one for the Birdsville Races. We’ve experienced some challenges due to the weather, but we’ve also had a lot of positives, with the weather bringing much-needed relief for farmers in and around this region,” Mr Brook said. “Despite a few stops and starts, we’ve had a very successful race meet. And the size of this Super Sunday of racing gives us a lot to be happy about.”

Festival celebrates local cultural diversity WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he World Food and Music Festival is finally here with the highly anticipated biennial event to be held in Richardson Place this Saturday.

The event will bring musical acts, food stalls and cultural workshops from local and national groups to Roxby Downs to help celebrate the vast cultural diversity of the community. “We have a connection to a lot of different cultures here in Roxby Downs and we are using this event to celebrate that cultural diversity,” said Roxby Council community projects officer Sasha Yantewo. Local food vendors will be accompanied by Adelaide based ‘Beyond India’ to provide locals with food for the event. A jumping castle and face painting will be

available to entertain the children while a karaoke tent will be there to give the bigger children something to do. Henna workshops, Compassion Australia and World Food and Music Festival merchandise will all have stalls at the event also. A variety of musical acts will serenade attendees on Saturday as well, with Harmonny, Alan Sumner and the Three Amigos Plus One head lining the event. The Three Amigos Plus One will be fresh off their performance at the 2016 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix on the weekend and said they are looking forward to coming to Roxby Downs to take part in the festival. “We are look forward to entertaining so that people experience music from Mexico especially traditional songs like Cielito Lindo and the Mexican Hat Dance but also infuse our cultural twist,” said band member Elio Pagliarulo.

“Also we look forward to connecting with as many people as possible off stage. We feel this is an important aspect of the entertainment industry.” The band will provide locals with a fun and energetic performance showcasing a broad range of music to suit all. Songs will range from Mexican classics like La Bamba and Guantanamera and short send ups of One Direction to children’s songs like Toot Toot Chugga Chugga Big Red Car and Incy Wincy Spider. “We are the (Mexican) equivalent of One Direction, we call ourselves The Mariachi One Direction or is that the Mariachi Wrong Direction, we are not sure sometimes,” Pagliarulo joked. The Three Amigos Plus One have performed at festivals all over the country in-

cluding Elvis Parkes Festival NSW and The Multicultural Canberra Festival in this year alone. Pagliarulo said festivals like the one in Roxby Downs this weekend were particularly beneficial and were a great way of embracing and accepting the diverse cultures Australia has to offer. “It’s about acknowledging the immigrants from around the world who came to Australia to make it their home and work hard on the land so to speak,” he said. “I know my parents did. Festivals like yours highlights the acceptance of cultures and to know that we are all one no matter what colour, religion you are. We are all in this together.” The festival will kick off in Richardson Place at 4pm on Saturday.

Local house auctions bring interest, but no sales

F

our house and property auctions were held in Roxby Downs last Thursday by locally based real estate agents Andrews Property.

The properties – 15 Mirra Street, 5 Anna Court, 33 Irrapatana Street and 46 Axehead Road attracted between 10 and 20 locals at their respective auctions, with many of those present representatives from other local real estate agencies. Only one bid was placed amongst all the auctions – of $120,000 for 33 Irrapatana

Street. The bid did not meet the property’s reserve price. Andrews Property Director Warren Andrews said he was disappointed but not surprised with the day’s outcome. “I can’t remember the last time a house sold at auction in Roxby Downs,” Mr Andrews said. “We will aim to sell in the weeks following the auctions. “I am a little disappointed in the Mirra Street house, I was quietly confident that would sell today!” Mr Andrews said there has been more house sales this

year than last, but a lot are stressed or mortgagee sales. “At the right price, properties will sell,” Mr Andrews said. “Every market has a crack price.” He said six of the last seven property sales in Roxby Downs were owner occupied rather than investor, which told him people can see value in the Roxby Downs community. The next auction to be held by Andrews Property will be a mortgagee sale held on Wednesday, October 5 at 12 noon for property 37 Tiliqua Crescent, Roxby Downs.

Auctioneer and Andrews Property Director Warren Andrews conducted four auctions in Roxby Downs last Thursday. While there was healthy interest, there were no sales.

Science Hub off to good start

D

espite wet conditions and a last minute change of time and location, the Science for Saving Species launch ran smoothly on Saturday.

Around 30 participants, including Member for Giles Eddie Hughes, gathered at the Lions Park to take part in a range of hands-on activities from trapping to stock motion filming with local videographer Travis Hague.

“It was a good start and has given us some good ideas of what works and what we can do next time,” said Arid Recovery General Manager Katherine Tuft. “Everyone that came stayed for the whole two hours and even local member Eddie Giles came and took part. “We had four different activities which were all very hands on, so everyone got to have a play. “We will scale things up

next year for National Science Week, which will be around September and October again and hopefully we can get some people travel up from out of town for it.” Mrs Tuft added a thank you had to go out to those who attended as well as Raine and Horne and the Rotary Club of Roxby Districts for the provision of their gazebo, and Sodexo for preparing the food. Speedway campaign kicks off for Rockets

F

ollowing their unprecedented successes of the 2015-2016 racing season, sidecar speedway racing outfit, the Roxby Rockets are about to launch into action after six months away from the track.

Last season, the Roxby Rockets – driven by local man Trent Headland – raced against the best in the business to place second at the New South Wales State Titles, second in the two-event Oceania Championship series, second in the Australian Titles and finally, second in the FIM World Championships. At each event, the Rockets came second only to speedway racing phenomenon Darrin Treloar, who holds himself an impressive eight Australian Championships. This year, the aim is to go one step further, and in the most respectable fashion possible – knock Treloar off the podium he has held on to for so long. “It’s been a pleasure racing against Treloar, because he is the best there is. To be the best there is, you have to beat the best there is and learn to be better – so racing Darrin has helped us become as successful as we have so far,” Headland said recently. “Coming second to him has only made us hungrier for that top prize.” Many sidecar racing outfits have tried and failed to overcome Treloar in the past, but Headland, along with his Victorian passenger Daz Whetstone, are quietly confident. “We’ve got the new bike, and a couple new engines, we’re working on analysing our weaknesses and strengths as a team and trying to improve upon what we discover.” However, the Headland Roxby Rockets are constantly in need of both fiscal and in-kind support to

keep them on the road and racing in the Australian racing circuit. “It’s no secret that motorbikes are expensive,” Headland explained. “But I think the more successful you become, in turn, the more expensive

it is for our team to remain competitive.” The Roxby Rockets are looking for local sponsors to help them set off their season’s campaign “Any amount helps,” Headland

said. “A hundred bucks could be a new tyres, fifty bucks could be some more coolant. It all adds up.” For more information on how to get involved with the Rockets, check them out at the Facebook

he first round of Government funding for upgrades and construction of female change rooms is now open, it has been announced.

The funding offers $4 million to sporting clubs and organisations across South Australia. It is part of the first round of $10 million allocated to the Female Facilities Program for three years as part of the State Government’s $40 million mega sport State Budget announcement. The Female Facilities Program is open to notfor-profit sport clubs, as-

sociations and community organisations. Clubs can apply for a maximum of $500,000 to build the change rooms. Applications close October 31, 2016. According to the Office of Recreation and Sport, the latest data shows approximately 150,000 girls and women are registered with sporting clubs in South Australia. “Women and girls who play sport should have access to exactly the same level of facilities as boys and men,” Recreation and Sport Minister Leon Bignell said recently. “Having female change

rooms at sporting clubs sends an important message to women and girls they are welcome and wanted. “I have spoken to many young female players who tell me first-hand how hard it is to change into their uniforms at their current clubs with many having to change in their car before a game. There are over 4500 registered female football and soccer players and more than 1000 registered female cricket players in SA. “The State Government supports women’s sports at all levels – from grassroots through to elite and this is just another way we can encourage girls and women to stay in the sports they love,” Mr Bignell said. “Investment through this program will see a significant increase in participation in traditionally male-dominated sports – as well as an improvement in safety and culture.” This measure will also create local construction jobs as sporting clubs across the State access the grant program. Family driving Hooper to follow dreams

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

F

rom competing in the Roxby Downs Golf Club Championship, to trying his hand at the British Open and US Masters golf tournaments, local man Wade Hooper has a busy few years ahead of him.

This is the plan of attack for 32 year old Hooper, who is working hard to fulfil his childhood dreams, with the hopes of leaving a longstanding legacy for his children. “My drive has changed now I am older and wiser,” he said. “With football you get to this age and are like well that’s bad luck, I missed out, but with golf there is still a bit of a window for me, so I am lucky.” Hooper’s dedication can be surmised in his daily 5am training sessions, where he repeatedly tees off, hitting golf balls into the relative darkness.

COMING SOON: THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS

He hopes to take part in one of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Australasian qualifying school events in December which he said at current leaves him around 100 days to prepare and get up to standard. Life has, admittedly, gotten in the way for Hooper, who concedes he was on track to make it big in his younger years, but in the past decade he has made excuses and lost sight of his dream with the rigors of work pulling him away from his goals. Becoming a father to daughter Maddie, he said, has helped him refocus and reenergised his drive to become a pro golfer. “There are a few little reasons, but the big one is being a father and I am starting to realise what I want for them,” he said. “I want Mads and the next one (baby Hooper number two, due in the coming weeks) to keep fighting for what they want to do and I want to be a role model and show

them that I didn’t give up on my dream.” Hooper’s story has been all over Facebook in the last two weeks after local film maker Travis Hague created a short movie on his journey. He said he is overwhelmed with the response he has received and was hoping the message would be able to get across to everyone in the community. “The reason I am going silly on Facebook is to try and inspire other people and be a part of my dream,” he said. “Hopefully I can try and get a few more out there having a crack. “But I am trying to inspire everyone, not just golfers, it might even be someone doing something for health reasons.” PICTURED: Wade Hooper, who is aiming to become a pro golfer, passes some of his knowledge onto local youngster Gaby at a clinic recently.
