yneisha Bollard compiled her last edition of The Monitor on Monday, leaving the local community newspaper for a new job in Adelaide.

Ms Bollard is set to start her new position as a public relations consultant with JP Media today. She told The Monitor last week she had enjoyed her time in Roxby Downs but was now looking forward to the challenges ahead. “I have greatly appreciated the opportunities that The Monitor has provided me with,” Ms Bollard said. “My favourite part has been working for a not-for-profit newspaper that prides itself on supporting local groups, clubs and events in a range of ways. “I have enjoyed being part of a closeknit community in which people are quick to help others in need. “I will miss the professional and personal relationships I have developed during my time here.” Ms Bollard said her position at The Monitor was different compared to previous jobs, with a variety of extra responsibilities attached to the role. These included more involvement in the

day-to-day operation of the newspaper along with a greater ability to support the area through sponsorship arrangements and providing generous advertising discounts. Despite the move she said she would visit Roxby Downs when she could, with her partner still holding a job at Olympic Dam. “I am sure I will miss the friendly and accepting atmosphere this town has to offer,” Ms Bollard said. “There are plenty of community events held throughout the year, so I will have to make trips back for those. “I am keen to check out the World Food and Music Festival, and the Roxby Downs Races is always a fun event to attend.” Ms Bollard said Roxby Downs had been a great place to live and she had met some amazing people during her 19 months in town. She said she had been pleased to see so many members of the community putting their heart and soul into this town, and they should be commended for what they do. “As editor of the local newspaper I have tried to shine a light on these people so that others might be inspired to become more involved with community activities,” she added.

Qld man charged over alleged drug offences

A

52-year-old Queensland man has been charged with drug offences following a traffic stop on the Stuart Highway north of Glendambo last Thursday.

Police stopped a Ford ute for excessive speed at around 11am. After searching the vehicle they allegedly found a large quantity of dry cannabis and a compact phone stun gun. The man was charged with selling a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug and possessing a prohibited weapon. He was refused bail and appeared in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court last Friday. He was remanded into custody and will have to appear again on September 9.

Exhibition celebrates diversity WRITTEN BY RYNEISHA BOLLARD

T

he Roxby Downs Multicultural Forum officially opened its community exhibition at the roxbylink art gallery last Thursday night.

Featuring works either created or collected by locals, the exhibition showcases Roxby’s rich cultural diversity. Multicultural Forum chairperson Theresa Bunyon demonstrated how to use the Chinese abacus she contributed, while Charles Nzama explained the stories behind his two paintings. Elizabeth Manyumwa spoke about a Maasai necklace and sandals she purchased from an African market, and David Bunyon reflected on a photograph he took in Singapore in 1975. Also Vanja Vukotic shared photographs of her and her sons in Montenegro for Christmas last year. Apart from being a celebration of diversity, the exhibition also aims to promote the World Food and Music Festival being held on Saturday, September 24, from 4pm to 10pm. Held every two years, the festival is one of the major projects co-ordinated by the Multicultural Forum. Mrs Bunyon said the group needed more volunteers to come forward to help with the event – especially when it came to preparations on the day and packing up that evening. “If anyone knows anyone who wants to volunteer, please let us know,” she said. The festival is set to include two main stages – one for the various cultural performances and another for karaoke. A range of cuisines will be showcased at the food stalls set up on Richardson Place, and there will be an international tea and coffee tent featuring hot beverages from different countries. Workshops will include an indigenous weaving class held by the local Minyma Talk group, while children’s entertainment will include face painting and a jumping castle.

There will be a number of well-known songs for participants to get involved with as well. Sumner has been performing for around 20 years, starting with gigs at pubs before releasing his debut album,

Roxby to form ‘deadly’ team WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

F

or the first time ever, Roxby Downs may have a team competing at the annual Deadly Fun Run (DFR) Championships held at Uluru in July 2017. The DFR is an Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) initiative aimed at introducing running and walking to remote communities in a fun and unintimidating environment. This weekend’s Desert Dash will count as the first event in the series and will give indigenous participants the chance to join as part of the DFR. Sport and recreation officer Beck Cooke from roxbylink said it was hoped there would be three more races to follow in the

lead-up to the championships next year to prepare the team. “We have already received a small amount of interest, which is good,” she said. “At this stage we are just looking to get it off the ground. “It is a great initiative, and I hope we can even get a small group to participate next year and build from there.” IMF ambassador and former Olympic marathon runner Robert De Castella has taken the series even further by selecting a group from the championships to participate in the New York Marathon. The series and the foundation are all about promoting fitness and healthy living. They also focus on building leadership and other positive traits. While in New York, participants undertake a Certificate III in Fitness, and

once completed they return to their local communities to provide leadership and share the knowledge they have learned. There are four categories in the DFR series – 3km for junior men and women and 5km divisions for each gender. This year’s Desert Dash will include a 3km run/walk for the first time. The racing will begin this Sunday at the town oval with 10km runners and walkers setting off at 8.30am. The 5km run/walk participants will follow at 8.45am before the 3km entrants begin at 8.50am. Entry forms can be collected from the roxbylink leisure centre, BHP Billiton Olympic Dam Medical Centre or from roxbydowns.com.au and returned via email to: roxbytriathlon@gmail.com Registrations will also be taken at the Roxby Downs Community Club on Saturday from 3pm to 5pm.

ocal children had a closer look at some of the species that live in their own backyard at a Bush Blitz community event on Sunday.

Bush Blitz manager Jo Harding said she had been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm shown by participants and their eagerness to learn more about science and the environment. “We definitely found the community already has a real interest for this kind of thing, so it was great for us to be able to come out and add to that,” Ms Harding told The Monitor. “It was good to have some many people come and check everything out, and we just thought it gave the community something else to look at.” The event was aimed at promoting the fortnightlong Bush Blitz event currently under way at Lake Torrens National Park and properties surrounding Andamooka and Roxby Downs. Scientists from the South Australian and Queensland museums, South Australian Herbarium and both Flinders University and the University of Adelaide are searching the area for everything from plants and reptiles to spiders and insects. Ms Harding said this was the first time the team had ventured to this area and it was unsurprising to have already found a number of what they consider to be new species. Bush Blitz is Australia’s largest species discovery program and is a partnership between the Federal Government, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities and Earthwatch. Ms Harding said this was the closest any of the Bush Blitz teams had worked to a BHP Billiton site, and the local project gave them a chance to show off the support the mining giant provided. “It is a really great way to promote what BHP Billiton are doing,” she said. “They have been with the program for eight years now and hopefully we can continue working together.” Ms Harding said BHP Billiton played a major active part in the program, with Bush Blitz scientists being assisted by eight BHP employees who have travelled to Roxby Downs from all over Australia for the event.

Monitor OPINION The

EDITORIAL By Ryneisha Bollard

Well, Roxby Downs, the time has come to say ‘goodbye’. I have never been a fan of the ‘G word’. I feel like people expect for there to be a lot of sadness attached to it, whereas I believe it depends on the context. In the case of my departure this week, I am moving on to an exciting opportunity and a chance to be closer to friends and family. I am also moving away from a town that has one of the most welcoming and friendly communities I have had the privilege to be part of, but I intend on popping back for a visit now and then. Rather than being a sad parting, I see this as an opportunity for someone else to take the reins here at The Monitor and for me to try my hand at a new role. I look forward to seeing you all again soon, and thank you for your kind words and well wishes.

Program prepares kids for school WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

S

t Barbara’s Parish School has introduced a new program that helps prepare future students for school life. Ready, Set, School is aimed at four year-olds and/or kindergarten attendees. It prepares participants for social, emotional and academic success prior to their commencement of school. “We aspire for the children to have access to foundational learning experiences that set them up for success as they transition from the Ready, Set, School program to learning to learn at school,” said St Barbara’s Parish School teacher Nicole Montgomerie. “Ready, Set, School is an early childhood initiative with a focus on early literacy and numeracy taught in a fun classroom environment by a qualified, knowledgeable and ded-

icated teacher, along with two ESOs. “All children have access to different levels of learning, and we can adapt their learning experience to suit their requirements.” Mrs Montgomerie said the program gave participants access to a variety of play-based activities and teaching sessions in relation to foundational literacy and numeracy skills that help with the successful transition to school. Skills that will be developed include independence, selfconfidence, listening, increasing vocabulary and developing thinking skills. “The program gives children a positive understanding and experience of school as a safe, enjoyable place,” Mrs Montgomerie said. “It acknowledges that children have individual needs, interests and skills and involves the community of children, families, (the) school and relevant others. “It also allows children to spend

time in the school environment before starting.” Sessions will run every Friday during school terms, starting at 9am and finishing at 10.30am, at a cost of $5.

Children will need to bring fruit ready to eat, a water bottle, a hat and any medication required. To enrol or for more information, contact the front office staff on 8671 3207.

Lucy also read something at the mass.

Religious education coordinator Chrissie Grocke said it was a time for the students to acknowledge the work of St Mary, give thanks and to celebrate the church’s recognition of the special contribution she made to our nation. “Students began the celebration by joining in song to commemorate Mary’s journey of faith, her life and her legacy,” Mrs Grocke said.

“They brought forward beads to form a set of rosary beads with the words of Mary’s qualities written on them. “These included loving all, trusting in God, seeking justice, charity for all, seeing the need, showing courage, living with faith, love for God, compassion in her heart, building a dream, hard working, loved children, cared for the poor and acting as a teacher for all.” Students then reflected on parts of St Mary’s life including her early years, her desire to help the poor and needy and the formation of the Sisters of St Joseph.

OUT $1k raised at markets

T

he Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Roxby Downs Auxiliary held a fundraising event on Saturday, August 20, at the Roxby Market Day.

Bree Butler provided face painting, Woolworths donated fruit towards a ‘teddy bear picnic’ and there was a jumping castle set up courtesy of Monica Handyside. Krispy Kreme donuts were also available for purchase and raised about $500. It is understood the day’s tally reached about $1000. Auxiliary members would like to thank those who made donations along with Deb Adams from RFDS Central Operations for organising the flight simulator, BSH Transport for bringing the donuts from Adelaide to Roxby and Oasis for providing a room that could be used for picking up the donuts. They also thanked the local community for its ongoing support of the RFDS. Meanwhile the day was also an opportunity to present certificates of appreciation to auxiliary members for their many years of service. These included Cherie and Scott Gaskin (10 each), Michelle Gillings (15) and Merv and Erilee Rogers (20 each).

R

oxby Council is pleased to introduce Tori Hobson-Leslie.

Ms Hobson-Leslie, has been awarded a horticultural traineeship with Roxby Council. A resident of Roxby Downs for roughly 11 years, Ms Hobson-Leslie was previously working in horticulture and is very excited about her new position. “I love horticulture and I’m excited to make it my career” said Ms Hobson Leslie.

“I’m in a good team and Wade is a great mentor. I’ve got guidance and I’m being shown how to do things better”. So far, Ms Hobson-Leslie has been working on maintaining the ovals and golf course. “I’m excited to learn more and I love working outdoors” she said. When asked about how she feels about Roxby Downs Ms Hobson-Leslie said every time she leaves Roxby she always seems to come back. “There’s something about Roxby that just feels like home to me,” she added. Green organic waste is being contaminated with other household waste.

Keep it green to keep costs down

R

oxby Council provides a green organics waste collection service once a month on a Tuesday across the town.

Every household has a bin for green waste in addition to a Roxby Council-branded general waste bin and a recycling bin. The decision to move to a single collection day once a month saves

the community $14,200 per year. Unfortunately, the green waste being picked up is often contaminated by general waste like bottles, cans and cardboard. This means that green organic waste will need to be disposed of in landfill, and this comes at a considerable cost to the community and the environment. Continued contamination of green waste may mean an end to

the green organic waste collection service in the future! Please remember to only dispose of green organic waste like lawn clippings, leaves, prunings, small branches and cut flowers in your green bin. If you would like more information please contact Anni Giles, Community Projects Officer (Environment), on 8671 0010.

Women’s Health Week helps raise awareness

W

omen’s Health Week is a good time to raise awareness and talk about our health.

The Health Forum supports Women’s Health Week and encourages our local ladies to take the time to focus on their health, learn more about it and take action.

The campaign ‘No more elephants!’ is a time to get rid of the elephant in the room and get talking about women’s health. Women can be good talkers, but when it comes to health, we often don’t take the time to ask questions, seek out credible information and work on a sound plan of action. The theme for 2016 is: ‘Am I normal?’ It is a question we know every woman at some stage of her life asks. Whether it’s about weight, body image, mental health or sex, let’s get rid of the elephant in the room and start talking about these subjects and more. During the five days of the 2016 Women’s Health Week

(September 5-9) the above topics will have a focus. For more information, check out: www.womenshealthweek. com.au

Check out the World Food and Music Festival Community Exhibition on display in the roxbylink gallery until the end of September. Well done to the Multicultural Forum on a wonderful exhibition.

It is a great opportunity to share your culture with everyone, and we encourage you to come dressed up and be proud of your culture. Step 1) Heat oil for deep frying. Step 2) Meanwhile mix together gram flour, rice flour, salt, hing, cumin, chilli powder (if needed) and butter. Step 3) Add water as needed and mix together to form a smooth dough. The dough must not be sticky and should be free of any cracks. Step 4) Fill a piping bag with some of the dough and keep the rest of the dough covered with a moist cloth. Step 5) Squeeze the dough in circles (as shown in picture) either on a plastic sheet or on the back of a slotted ladle or on a small plate or on butter paper. Close the ends of the circles. Step 6) Check if the oil is hot enough by dropping a small flat piece of dough in the oil. If the dough rises immediately to the surface, then the oil is hot enough to fry. Step 7) Gently slide three or four murukku into the hot oil. Step 8) Deep fry them until they turn golden brown on both sides. Step 9) Drain them out of the oil, and place on a paper towel. Step 10) You can store your crispy murukku in an air-tight container for almost one month. Tips: For beginners, it is difficult to get perfect circles. You can make your murukku in any shapes (see picture). It is better to make the dough in batches. If your murukku is hard to bite, add more butter to the next batch of dough.

Bronca nominated for award

T

he accolades keep rolling in for the Roxby Downs Soccer Club, with vice president Dan Bronca the latest to be recognised.

Bronca has been nominated for the Good Sports Beating Heart award, which offers a prize of $3000 for the winner’s club. He has been a part of the local soccer club since he moved to Roxby Downs more than two years ago. Having started off as small time helper, Bronca has become one of the main coaches at the club alongside president Tony D’Arrigo. “You don’t do these things for the accolades, you do it for the kids and the opportunities you can give to them,” he said. “It is a great feeling being acknowledged, but at the end of the day it is about the opportunity for the club.” Bronca said he was hoping to get enough votes to win the competition – not for himself but for the $3000 he could bring in for his club. He said the money would pay for a large chunk of next year’s South Austral-

ian Junior Soccer Association Country Championships trip while also allowing the club to buy new training equipment. Bronca said the most beneficial thing about his role with the club was the development he has seen from the children during the time he had been coaching them. He said the Football Federation SA had a curriculum it set each season that was aimed at helping the development of children in the sport. “Two years ago they would just get the ball run, shoot and try and score, but this year they are following the curriculum and the difference is noticeable,” he said. “We scored 14 goals on the weekend (of the Country Championships) which is an improvement from a couple of years ago. “It is really good when the kids can see they are doing the right thing and getting benefit from it.” Bronca said there was a number of other helpers who deserved the award nomination just as much – if not more – as he did. “Emma Nielson is the heart of the club, and doesn’t get enough recognition for what she does,” he said.

Bronca said he would like to see the whole community get behind the voting so the soccer club could benefit from the $3000. Votes can be made online (http://beatingheart.com.au/nominee/daniel) until September 15. Meanwhile the club took two teams away to the South Australian Junior Soccer Association Country Championships in Strathalbyn on August 27-28. The Roxby Downs Orange team finished fourth in the under 12 division A group, while the Black team placed third in division B. The teams won a game each, and Bronca said everyone had played well, improved and enjoyed themselves over the course of the weekend. “It really brought everyone together, and on the bus on the way home they weren’t thinking about a loss as a loss,” he said. “Everyone was concentrating on how much fun they’d had as a team.” RIGHT: Seth Parks takes a goal kick at the recent Country Championships.

October date set for Motocross Night Meet

T

he Roxby Desert Motocross Club’s (RDMXC’s) 21st birthday celebrations and annual Night Meet will be held in a combined event on October 15. They were originally scheduled for separate dates, but both clashed with other local events. RDMXC president Clint Gow-Smith

apologised for the short notice and said he understood the change had inconvenienced some people’s plans for attending. “I had put that many messages out and had very little feedback,” he said on the club’s Facebook page. “We were looking at a band and other things but numbers weren’t looking good and we didn’t want to overcommit.

“That night (for the 21st birthday celebrations) also clashed with football clubs’ wind-ups and other events in town. “I am really sorry for the short notice.” Despite the change in plans, Gow-Smith said he remained optimistic that there would be a large turnout to support next month’s event. Karts Classic overcomes challenges

T

he Desert Dirt Kart Club held its annual Two-Day Classic at Roxby Downs on the weekend despite rain threatening to force another cancellation of the event. Organisers had originally planned to hold the Classic on June 25-26, but heavy downpours meant the track was in poor condition and the meet had to be rescheduled for this month. A kart club spokesperson said the week leading up to the September event started off with out-of-town competitors cancelling their nominations, then rain “made a mud pit of the track”. However, with the help of Mine Tech Engineering and a few volunteers, water was pumped off the track last Wednesday night.

“With low numbers the fields were small, but hard, fast and clean racing was on show for the weekend with 10 heat racers over the two days,” the spokesperson said. Club members Tom Wilson and Lachlan Vugts took home first place trophies from the weekend. TWO-DAY CLASSIC RESULTS KT Open: 1. Tom Wilson (#11), 168pts. 2. Heath Mynhart (#17), 163pts. 3. Michael Vugts (#66), 139pts. Junior Rookies: 1. Lachlan Vugts (#99), 168pts. 2. Lucy Ramsey (#7), 117 pts. 3. Max Vugts (#36), no points scored as Rookies Class.

Night of victories for Miners with wins in all three senior grades VERITY CASSERLY NETBALL REPORTER

F

riday night saw the Roxby Miners and Olympic Dam converge on the outside netball courts to face off for the A, B and C grade 2016 Roxby Downs Netball Association grand finals.

The end-of-season excitement brought out a large number of spectators. Players, coaches and umpires will now take a short break before gearing up for the 2017 season, with many trying to develop strategies to take down the undefeated Roxby Miners.

A GRADE

In a much-anticipated match-up, the Roxby Miners A grade side defeated Olympic Dam in a game that left supporters a little disappointed after the Miners dominated the court. In a lacklustre game, the Miners were able to show some flare in overcoming a hard-working OD line-up. The first quarter opened goal for goal until Olympic Dam was able to create a turnover and take the lead with Ali Knights (GS) and Bec Eli (GA) working hard in the goals. Un f o r t u n a t e l y i t would not last as the Miners quickly retaliated with a goal before taking control of the score line. The first quarter break saw the Miners holding a seven-goal lead, 17-10. Despite the hard work and determination of Chrislene Swart (GK) and Beth Elliott (GD), the Devils were unable to contain the Miners’ formidable attack of Joice Takaidza (GS) and Cassie Weir (GA). At the half-time break the Miners held an indefensible 20-goal lead, 40-20. Going into the second half OD continued to fight the stampeding Miners, working hard to move the ball up the

court via Nicole Montgomerie (C) and Tahlia Glover (WA). The combined efforts of the Wurfel sisters – Hannah (C) and Renee (WA) – assisted in creating turnovers and moving the ball swiftly to the Miners’ goal ring. The Miners held a 23goal lead heading into the final quarter. Their fitness and goal accuracy overran the tiring OD in the final quarter, with Takaidza showing her agility by working in and out of the ring and creating unexpected turnovers in the Miners’ goal end. The Miners took the game by 39 goals with the final score at 76-37. Takaidza, after scoring 73 of the 76 goals recorded by the Miners on the night, was named best on court, but special mention must also go to the hard-working Swart.

B GRADE

The Roxby Miners B grade side, coming off a strong season, defeated Olympic Dam, 62-41. In a competitive goal for goal opening quarter, the Miners took the first point with staple goalies Emma Neilson (GA) and Hayley Wurfel (GS) in the ring. OD’s Tammy Hill (WA) directed play and dominated the wings. At the first-quarter break the Miners had taken a three-goal lead, 15-12. The second quarter saw the Miners tightening their defence with Millie Cordy (GD) and Abby Telfer (GK) creating turnovers and taking rebounds to curb the OD attack. A silence fell over the court for the following quarters, with players not talking and the spectators subdued. OD goal keeper Sam Fishlock worked hard to contain the fast-moving Hayley Wurfel (Miners), though the difference in height caused some issues in determining the three feet rule. The Miners had increased their lead to an ominous six goals by

THE MONITOR - Your Community Newspaper

half time, 28-22. They had found their stride by the third quarter with Kelly Thomson continuing her dominance in the centre, directing play and helping move the ball fluidly down the court. The pressure from the Miners caused OD to make forced errors that the Miners were able to capitalise on. There was a competitive match-up in the wings between OD’s Tara-Jane Hill (WA) and the Miners’ Elly Anderson (WD). At the final break the Miners held a comfortable 16-goal lead, 46-30. An interesting change to the OD player lineup saw goalie Madison Evans move into wing attack and Tammy Hill return to the court as goal attack. OD goal shooter Sam Corneliusen created excitement for the building spectators with her spectacular ‘long bombs’ and strong leads. Unfortunately, the changes were unable to stem the onslaught from the Roxby Miners, who took the game by 21 goals. Wurfel took home the award for best on court.

C GRADE

The C grade grand final saw the favourites Olympic Dam Green take on a young Roxby Miners in what proved to be a closely fought contest. The opening quarter saw the Miners take the first centre pass to gain the opening goal of the match after overcoming the strong OD Green defence of Rose Lloyd (GK) and Laura Kelly (GD). A scrappy first quarter saw OD Green miss shots at goal and the Miners capitalise on turnovers to score. The Miners held a three-goal lead at the first-quarter break, 7-4. OD Green came out stronger in the second quarter to gain the first goal with strong leads from Marie Gubbin (GS) and Jeanette Taylor (GA).

Spectators were provided with a tight tussle in the mid court between centres Mel Ferry (OD Green) and Megan Herring (Miners). The Devils were able to forge ahead to take a two-goal lead going into the half-time break, 1311. OD Green continued to increase its score line in a physical, defence-heavy quarter with a lot of forced errors and turnovers from both sides. Emotions where

running high as play quickened and playeron-player strategies were implemented. Miners wing attack Amanda Bremner continued to work hard and create opportunities for the goalies against diligent OD Green wing defence Krystal Wilmshurst. OD Green had managed to increase its lead to five goals heading into the nail-biting final quarter, 20-15. The competition remained tight through-

out the game, which encouraged the spectators to become involved and vocal. Supporters eagerly egged on their teams in a fast-paced and thrilling final quarter. OD Green took the first goal but appeared to be losing its momentum. Miners goalies Miranda Syversten (GS) and Ebony Johnson (GA) dominated with accuracy and strong leads to bring their side back into the game.

Continued forced errors and issues with accuracy as the Miners tightened their defence via Stephanie Forsyth (GD) and Baylie Dadleh (GK) saw OD Green unable to maintain its lead. With a strong push, the Miners took the game in a seven-goal turnaround, 26-22. In a defence-heavy game, OD Green’s goal keeper Laura Kelly won best on court for the night.

Under 9s venture to Quorn football carnival WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

D

espite just the one win, this year’s Roxby Downs under 9 Quorn Football Carnival side has been deemed one of the most successful in recent history.

Coach and Roxby Downs Junior Football Association vice president Warwick Giles said it was one of the strongest teams that had ever been taken down, with a large number of players making themselves available for the carnival. Giles said the one win did not reflect the

competitive nature of the team. “They were competitive in all their games,” he said. “It went really well and all in all the players had good fun and played in the right spirit. “We really gained some numbers. “Last year we nearly didn’t have enough

to make a team, but this year we had 26 go down so we had eight on the bench at all times.” Giles said he had appreciated the support from parents, with a number of them putting their hands up to help with tasks like scoring and goal umpiring.

A

s was universally expected, the Roxby Districts Miners won their fourth consecutive Far North Football League premiership on Saturday.

However, this was not before surviving a late surge from East Roxby. The Roos outscored the Miners with 4.5 to 1.2 in the last quarter to fall short by just 14 points. It is hard to describe this game as it was one of fluctuating fortunes, with both sides on top at various stages of the game. It was a very even contest in the first quarter, with East Roxby leading at the first change by just one point. Then the Miners took control on the scoreboard with 3.4 to only one behind in the second quarter to lead at the major change by 21 points. The irony of this was the Roos had several opportunities to score but frittered them away through bad kicking and an apparent lack of care in front of goal. The Miners were again on the march in

the premiership quarter and added three goals against East Roxby’s one and could have led by more than the 35-point margin at the final break had they been more accurate. They were again assisted by some wayward East Roxby forward thrusts. Miners co-coach Ricky Prosser later described the second and third quarters as “near perfect”. Going into the last quarter, it appeared as though the Miners were coasting to an easy fourth consecutive pennant, but the Roos had other ideas. The final quarter saw the East Roxby side lift and give it one last crack After a fairly even first 10 minutes, the men in blue and white came home with a ‘wet sail’ to just fail by 14 points after four goals and five points in the last quarter. Inaccuracy had again held them back. Rick Prosser’s late goal – the Miners’ 10th – was met with great jubilation as his teammates saw the value of the momentum, stemming goals amid East Roxby’s final-quarter charge. The Roxby Miners were again the victors, and they can take great pride in being the

first team in the history of Far North football to win four flags in a row. East Roxby can also take solace that they are on the right track and are not that far away from winning a flag. Keen observers such as myself can look forward to a closer and much more competitive 2017 season. The best players for the Miners were Brett Chesson, who I thought should have taken the honours for best player on the ground, Cody Kenny, who won the grand Best Player in the Grand Final medal, James Telfer and Craig Hall. Also Ben Hampel chimed in around the half backline, as did Haris Vrbovac. The Roos’ best were Lewis Grantham at centre half back, Matthew Schipper, who played very well as a lead up forward, kicking four goals, Ty Kirkwood, who rucked valiantly all day, Jason Lukich and Cam Faulkner. Congratulations to the Miners, who are the deserving winners of the 2016 Far North Football League premiership. Four premierships in a row has never been achieved before, and chances are it never will be again.
