ornridge and Andamooka kicked off the 40-over cricket competition last Friday night after the completion of the Twenty20 competition a week earlier.

Both sides missed out on a finals spot in the shorter format and were out to redeem themselves with a win. Hornridge won the toss and elected to bat first, with the Wanderers managing a total of 8/163 off their 40 overs. Best with the bat for the men in black and white was Glenn Shorrock with 50 and captain Jamie Way with 32. Dylan Costello was the pick of the bowlers for Andamooka with 2/17. In reply, Andamooka looked in control with Todd Patterson at the crease before he was dismissed on 57. Andamooka eventually fell agonisingly close at all out for 160 to hand Hornridge a three-run win. Patterson was the pick of the batsmen and had looked set to guide his side to victory. Following on from his 32 with the bat, Way popped up again to take 4/6 as the top bowler for Hornridge. THE MONITOR - Your Community Newspaper

Although the format had changed, Saturday night’s result remained the same. The Devils won the toss and, with a strong northerly wind, elected to bowl first. The decision paid immediate dividends when opening bowler Patrick Glover had the Miners’ Matt Green trapped in front in the first over to have the score 1/0. Fellow opening batter James Sieburn combined with Paul Trotta to steady the ship before he became Glover’s second victim a few overs later with the score at 26. Trotta fell soon after with no change in the score, and this brought Sean McIvor and Rhys Allard to the crease. The two batted calmly and saw their side to drinks at 3/63. They came out after drinks looking to up the tempo and succeeded briefly with boundaries coming for both batsmen. But when Allard fell to a sharp catch from Brendan Hill at short cover off the bowling of Seb Holbrook, it caused a major collapse. The Miners then proceeded to lose their final seven wickets – with their final four

batsmen scoring ducks – for just two runs to eventually be all out for 96. Allard and McIvor were the only two batters to score over double figures for the Miners with 30 and 34 respectively. For the Devils some tight bowling in the middle overs from skippers Rein Geraghty and Holbrook saw them claim three wickets each to be the pick of the bowlers. In reply OD got off to the worst possible start by losing opener David Kaminski in the first over for a duck bowled by McIvor. However, this would prove the only stumbling block for the Devils in their chase and, despite some good bowling from McIvor, Craig Nicholls and Hill guided their side home with the loss of just one wicket. Hill finished just short of a half century with 47 not out while Nicholls finished unbeaten on 39. The pair passed the total in the 24th over with another 16 overs to spare. McIvor was the only wicket taker for the Miners with figures of 1/14 off seven overs. This week will see a rematch of last year’s 40-over grand final with Hornridge taking on OD on Saturday night. Andamooka will take on the Miners in the Friday night fixture, with both sides looking for their first win of the 40-over competition.
