Oz charity Egg-cellent turnout for reunion pulls plug on clinics WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he future of the Andamooka and Marla health services is in doubt after their co-ordinating body recently announced it would be reducing its operations in remote SA communities.

A

ndamooka celebrated more than just Easter last weekend, when current and former locals gathered for the town’s 85-year reunion.

Local woman Katalin Wilby said the four-day event was well attended, with visitors coming from far and wide to be part of it. “It was a really good weekend,” she told The Monitor.

“Lots of people came back to town for it, so it was good to see so many old faces.” About 100 people attended a welcome barbecue on Friday, while the weekend’s other activities included a buffet dinner, market day, picnic lunch, morning tea and school tours. Mrs Wilby said those returning to the town for the event said they enjoyed seeing the changes that had

occurred since they had left. “It is very important to hold these kinds of events,” she said. “The community has grown and there has been a lot of change over the years, so it is good for them to come back and reconnect with some old faces.” Current and former locals will now have to wait until 2020 for the next reunion as it is held every five years. Australian charity Frontier Services, which is an agency of the National Assembly of the Uniting Church, currently runs local health and community support clinics at Andamooka and Marla. The organisation also provides a range of support to other remote centres across the country, but is withdrawing from its health operations in SA. Member for Giles Eddie Hughes told The Monitor he had since been in contact with Country Health SA and was searching for tenders to keep the Andamooka clinic going. “It is important we continue to deliver services in places like Andamooka and Marla,” he said. “We are hoping some services are willing to put in a bid so that someone will be able to continue to deliver services to these communities.” Mr Hughes said he would continue to work as an advocate on behalf of the Andamooka and Marla health services. He said he would stay in touch with Country Health SA to ensure a positive outcome. Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said he would do all he could to help the communities affected by Frontier’s withdrawal from remote South Australia. Mr Ramsey said he had already been in contact with Minister for Social Services Scott Morrison and asked him to investigate the matter. The Monitor contacted Frontier Services but was yet to receive comment before its publication deadline.

oxby Downs woman Rachel Young is one of 16 regional artists attending professional development and networking workshops being hosted by Country Arts SA in Adelaide this week.

Ms Young is a jewellery artist who also produces sculpture, objects and public artwork. She is joined by other successful participants from across the state – including Whyalla, Penong, Mount Gambier and Mannum – in undertaking the Learning Connections Visual Arts Development Program. Ms Young told The Monitor last week she was looking forward to the program as being a regional artist was often an isolating experience. “I don’t even go outside my front yard to go to work,” she said. “If you’re living in a metropolitan area, there’s access to galleries and arts communities that you can have face-to-face contact with. “I’ve got strong networks, but I haven’t got faces to put to their names.” The workshops are part of Adelaide City Council’s Emerging Curator Program, which aims to extend exhibition opportunities for regional art-

ists by supporting professional development and encouraging an exchange between metropolitan and regional artists and audiences. As part of the application process, entrants were asked to nominate areas of interest to ensure the program was relevant to all those selected to participate. The program began yesterday and will finish tomorrow, with activities including a gallery tour and opportunities to meet gallery directors, artists, curators and funding body representatives. It will include the launch of Craft Anonymous at the Adelaide Town Hall, a new exhibition featuring both regional and metropolitan artists working in craft mediums. The exhibition will include the work of Louise Byrne, Cindy Durant and Robyn Finlay from the professional development program.

EDITORIAL

By Ryneisha Bollard World Autism Awareness Day was celebrated last Thursday, April 2. Just one day later, an autistic 11-year-old boy, Luke Shambrook, went missing at the Candlebark camping ground, near Lake Eildon in north east Victoria. He was fortunately found alive and reunited with his family on Tuesday. In what could be considered a silver lining on an otherwise horrific situation for Luke’s family to have been in, the media reporting on his disappearance has provided an opportunity to examine the complexities of autism

and the extent to which it affects a child’s behaviour. Media reports highlighted that, as a result of his autism, Luke enjoyed hiding and had a fascination with water. He was also described by his family as having a “high pain threshold”, which was attributed to an increased likelihood of him surviving despite the cold nights on his own. It was inspiring to hear about the dozens of holidaymakers who volunteered in the search effort. America’s National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NDMEC) reports that nearly half of children with autism will wander, or elope, from safe environments.

The NCMEC also claims more than one-third of children who wander are considered ‘non-verbal’. “Finding and safely recovering a missing child with autism therefore presents unique and difficult challenges for families, law enforcement, first responders and search teams. “Children with autism go missing under a variety of circumstances. “They may seek out small or enclosed spaces. “They may wander toward places of special interest to them. “Or they may try to escape overwhelming stimuli such as sights, sounds, surroundings or activities of others...

“When a child with autism goes missing, it is important to quickly identify any unique interests the child has and create a list of their favorite places. “First responders should talk to anyone who knows the child well to ask for information about any interests, stimulations or obsessions the child may have. “This information could provide key clues leading to a safe recovery.” An estimated one in 100 people have autism in this country. That’s almost 230,000 Australians. We could be serving our commmunity better by further educating ourselves about this unique condition.

CFS wraps up danger season WRITTEN BY RYNEISHA BOLLARD

A team of four Roxby Downs CFS crew members attended the Sampson Flat bushfires in January.

T

he Roxby Downs Country Fire Ser vice (CFS) is reminding locals that bans may still apply, despite the official danger season for the North West Pastoral district ending last week.

Roxby Downs CFS crew member Stephen Scarr (left) with Sunrise reporter Nuala Hafner.

“Just because the fire danger season is over, it is not time to become complacent,” said Roxby Downs CFS captain Brett Atkins. “People still need to check on hot days if a fire ban is in place.” Mr Atkins said his station had responded to 20 callouts during the season, which began on November 1 last year and ended on Tuesday, March 31. “The season was better than the

last, and conditions were similar,” he said. Mr Atkins said incidents had included grass and house fires – with blazes varying in severity depending on their fuel types – along with the Sampson Flat bushfires. “Four people from Roxby attended the Sampson Flat fire over seven days,” he said. “They attended to extinguish spot fires and protect structures that were under attack from embers.” Mr Atkins said about 40 firefighters and 10 cadets (ages ranging from 11 to 16 years) were currently based at the Roxby Downs station, including seven newcomers since October. NBN to reach Roxby Downs

A

bout 1700 Roxby Downs homes are a step closer to joining the National Broadband Network (NBN), with works scheduled to begin next year.

The Roxby Downs premises are among 36,000 in the Grey electorate set to benefit when fixed line is installed. Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said last week’s announcement of the works was an important milestone for the relevant towns. Mr Ramsey said the fixed line would provide greater certainty for homes as businesses seeking fast broadband services. “The NBN will deliver internet access that’s fast, reliable and affordable,” he said. “Better broadband will transform the way homes and businesses communicate, do business and access online services. “Additionally I am pleased to advise people who are reliant on a satellite service that the NBN satellites will be operational in the first half of 2016, offering greatly improved reliability and speeds.” The NBN has expanded in the past year and currently includes 921,000 premises – up from the 345,000 reached before the Federal Election. More than 300,000 premises, up from 47,000, are connected the fixed line network, and 34,000 premises, up from 2000, are connected to the fixed wireless network. Federal Minister for Communications Malcolm Turnbull said these statistics showed the success of the rollout, which would make internet access more affordable for Australian consumers. “I have said before that this is the most exciting time in human history to be alive because of all the opportunities created by the digital revolution,” he said. “The arrival of the NBN will mean that those opportunities will be extended to all Australians, regardless of where they live.” For more information about the NBN rollout, visit: www.nbnco.com.au

ith the opening games just days away, Far North Football League president Henr y Andr yszczak said locals could expect another exciting season.

HORNRIDGE SPORTING CLUB

Would like to thank all sponsors for their continued support throughout the 2015 netball and football seasons!

One team will be playing under a new name (East Roxby) and a few clubs will be sporting new guernseys, and Andryszczak said these changes would make for a revitalised competition. “I am very excited for the start of the season,” he said. “East Roxby has changed its name and has a new coach, who is an ex-Western Bulldogs player, so they are a very different looking team. “Coober Pedy are looking good again, coming off their best season ever last year, and will be looking to make finals again.” The Miners Cup will return to Adelaide Oval

on Sunday, May 24, and Andryszczak said he was thrilled to announce that a charity game would be played in Roxby Downs the week before. The game will be between BHP Billiton Olympic Dam’s mine end and service operators, with only workers aged over 35 years allowed to play. The match will raise money towards sending junior footballers on a bus to see a Crows or Port Power game at Adelaide Oval. “We created this game to cheer the place up a bit,” Andryszczak said. “The place has been a bit down with Brian Partington’s passing, so we are looking to lift spirits.” Andryszczak encouraged spectators to leave their dogs at home instead of bringing them to football matches this season, as the oval was looking “perfect” at the moment and could do without unnecessary mess and damage from pets.

ocal junior footballer John Secker has been named West Adelaide’s under 16 captain for the 2015 season. Secker has thrived since moving to West Adelaide at the end of last year, and is currently still trialling with the side’s under 18s. “He came back to us in January/February, and some players, when they come back, drop their heads – but not Johnny,” under 16s coach Jason Fairall told The Monitor. “He is very driven and motivated, and has given it his all since being back.”

www.themonitor.com.au

Fairall said Secker’s attitude on the training track had earned him the respect of his teammates and unanimous selection as captain. Each player puts in a threetwo-one vote on who they think should be captain, and Fairall said the coaching staff members were unsurprised with the decision to make Secker captain. “He has good character,” he said. “He’s been up with the under 18s, but when he comes back he shows great leadership and handles himself very well. “We are rapt to have him.”

Fairall said West Adelaide’s Elite Development Program fostered success stories like Secker’s. The program brings together junior players as young as under 13s from West Adelaide country regions, which include Roxby Downs, for training camps and carnivals. “They get to familiarise themselves with the surroundings at West Adelaide and the coaching staff from a young age,” Fairall said. “So when they come back it is almost like home.” BY PATRICK GLOVER

Miners to dig deep for flag WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

R

oxby Districts Miners will be looking to make club history this season by winning their third premiership in a row.

Never before have the Miners won three consecutive flags, and coach Ricky Prosser said he hoped his side could be the first to do so. “These kinds of chances don’t come around too often,” he said. “We now have to put the past two behind us and concentrate on this year.” Although the Miners lost some key players from their side during the off season, Prosser said his squad had the depth to adapt to this change successfully. Prosser said many of this year’s Miners had played a high number of games for the club, with nine or 10 having played 50 or more games and three or four having played more than 100 games. He said keeping his players and his team together had contributed to their success. “We have been training since December and have had good numbers throughout pre-season,” he said. “We have lost a few key players, but I believe our depth is just as good and we are about where we were last year.” Prosser said the club’s structure had been kept the same, with the exception of injecting some youth into the leadership group. He said last year’s other grand finalist, Hornridge, would be around the mark again, but he was keen to see the improvements Olympic Dam and East Roxby had made over the pre-season.

Can the Miners (pictured after winning last year’s FNFL grand final) make it three in a row?

East Roxby embraces change WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

E

ast Rox by, formerly known as Andamooka, is hoping that a change of name, guernsey and coach over the off season will improve its on-field fortunes.

After finishing at the bottom of the ladder last year without a win, new

coach and ex-Western Bulldogs player Cam Faulkner said he was pleased with what he has seen on the training track over the pre-season and was looking forward to round one. “I have trained with Andamooka for seven years, and this year I have felt and noticed a difference at training,” he said. “With the image change there has already

about its name change. East Roxby will be doing more than just making up the numbers this year, Faulkner said, and the men in blue and white are set to give a few teams a scare if they are around for the finals. “From what I have seen at training, I do see the finals as a real possibility,” he said. “I understand we are coming from a long way back and that we were the whipping post at

times last year, but it would not be an unrealistic plan to make finals. “There are some new guys at the club that I haven’t seen a hell of a lot of yet, so we will see how the first month goes.” Faulkner said he was excited and expected big things both on and off the field this season, with attempts being made to bring the football and netball clubs together to create a family-friendly environment.

Saints coach Carmello Crisa said last year’s qualifying final loss to Olympic Dam was bitter-sweet, and would serve as a driving force for the club this year. “We’ve had a taste now,” he said. “That was our second shot at finals, and both times we have gone down in the first week. “It was bitter-sweet for the team, making finals but then losing in the first round. “But there now seems to be a sense of purpose.” Crisa said the team needed to put in better performances on the road and

play good football – not just at home, but away at Roxby Downs as well. The Saints have been putting in the hard yards at training, Crisa said, in a bid to increase their fitness levels. Coober Pedy should be going into the season full of confidence after winning an indigenous carnival against teams from Port Augusta, APY Lands and Yalata – just to name a few. “We have prepared the best we could with the carnival a couple of weeks ago,” Crisa said. “We won the final and it was an intense game, similar to what we expect on game days usually.” Crisa said he was looking forward to putting his players to the test on home soil against Olympic Dam this Saturday. Finals loss to spur on Magpies WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

N

e w Hornridge coach Ashley Baxter said he would be using the hurt of last year’s Far North Football League grand final loss to drive him and his team this year.

Despite only trailing the Miners by three points at half time in last year’s decider, the Magpies went down by 50 points. Baxter said he wanted to avoid the same thing happening this year. “Definitely in my mind it is something that will be driving me,” he said. “I am determined to go one better. A grand final loss is always hurtful, and something I don’t want to go through again.” Despite light numbers on the training track earlier in the pre-season, Baxter said players were beginning to come out more regularly. The Magpies have lost a num-

ber of players to other clubs and other leagues, but Baxter said they had found newcomers to cover the loss. Also changing this season is the club’s guernseys, which will still be black-and-white but will feature a new design. Baxter said he was excited for the start of the season, and was expecting a close competition this year. “I have heard that OD have had good numbers on the training track,” he said. “We train the same night as East Roxby, and they have been getting some good numbers to training, so they are going to be a lot more competitive this year.” Baxter will be playing for Hornridge while also coaching for the first time. “It is going to be a challenge being a player/coach, but I am excited and keen to get into it,” he said. “When I found out the job was available at the end of last year, I stuck up my hand straight away.”

New Devils coach Jason Elliott was keeping a lid on things, but told The Monitor he was happy with the numbers the team had been getting to training.

“We are pumped for round one,” he said. “We are just looking to build on last year and from that we’re hoping to see some improvement. “We have lost a couple from last season – like Timothy Walsh, Jacob Langdon and Br yce Mummery – and have picked up some unknowns. “We will be hoping to see some better footy from a few of the exist-

T

he Roxby Downs Community Library will be open throughout the upcoming school holidays, with activities planned for children of all ages.

A special activity program for children aged five to 12 years will be available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2pm to 3pm, with the theme ‘Animals, Beetles and Bugs’. Bookings are essential and can be made with the library staff by calling 8671 0500. The library will also continue to hold Toddler Story Time on Wednesdays through the school holidays (9.30am in the library) for

children under five – and although older siblings aren’t specifically catered for, they are always welcome to come along. Consistent opening hours The Roxby Downs Community Library’s opening hours are now consistent across six days each week, opening at 9am each Monday to Saturday (excluding public holidays). Changes have also been made to the Toddler Story Time repeat session held in the library on Wednesdays, which now starts at 9.30am (the same as the Tuesday session in the auditorium). “These changes really are about bringing consistency to the tim-

ings to make it easier for community members to use our library and our services,” said library team leader Sarah Powell. Don’t forget – the friendly staff are always available to talk to you about how the library can meet your needs. There are so many services available such as free internet, a huge online cataloguing resource and the ‘one card’ program, which enables anyone with a South Australian library card to tap into approximately 140 libraries around the state. The library’s opening hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12 noon on Saturday.

The second of a three-event partnership with the Football Federation of South Australia (FFSA), the event was attended by around 550 adults and children, and supported by a hard-working team of Council and roxbylink staff as well as community organisations. Council again provided the infrastructure for the event, including the electrical work, grounds set-up and preparation of the pitch – the quality of which was reflected in very positive feedback from the FFSA, as well as high standard of game and scoreline between the Adelaide Comets and West Torrens Birkalla. “The pitch looked fantastic which was due to lots of work over the last 12 months by Shane Mills and his team to bring it up to a professional standard,” said Tony Weir, roxbylink centre operations manager. “Our staff put in a huge effort throughout the week, beginning with the set-up from Thursday through to Saturday, management during the event and pack-up later that evening.” The event was a collaboration with the community, with Roxby Downs Rotary volunteers staffing the entrance gate for the afternoon/night, food stalls provided by Roxby Scouts and St Barbara’s Parish School, face painting by Bree Butler and the ever-popular jumping castles by D&D Party Supplies. “Bree made a significant donation to the junior soccer association after the event, which was hugely appreciated, and will be used to assist the Roxby under 16 team, which will be travelling to Barmera later in the

It was also great to see a large number of local people, coached by Tony D’Arrigo, taking to the pitch during the junior games, Roxby vs Port Augusta under 16 match, and a hotly contested game between local Aussie Rules teams the OD Devils and Roxby Miners. Once again the celebrity game was a hit with the spectators and players alike. Darts league keeps growing

T Roxby Downs soccer co-ordinator Tony D’Arrigo has welcomed the installation of new goals on the area school oval.

Oval scores new goals

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

N

ew soccer goals have been installed on the Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS) oval area to accommodate a growing interest in the game. The new goals are bigger than the current ones, are metal rather than plastic and are cemented into the ground to prevent damage. “The kids are really happy with the goals,” said Roxby Downs soccer co-ordinator Tony D’Arrigo. “The school benefits from them, too, because they can use them at lunchtime. “I have noticed kids who used to go and kick the ball around the football goal post

are now playing with the soccer goals.” While the new goals - located behind the football posts at the school end of the oval - are larger than the ones currently in place, the pitch is still two metres off being the full size. D’Arrigo said he appreciated the assistance of Shane Mills and Roxby in installing the goals. “I would like to thank council for the work they have done with this,” he said. “They see what people want and, if it is major and they see there is a need for it, they get it.” The pitch is still being used for nine-aside games for the older juniors and adults teams, but the larger goals and slightly larger pitch also allow for 11-a-side trainings to take place.

Little athletics on track

B

ill Natt and Lena Barrett are gaining momentum in their efforts to get a little athletics club up and running in Roxby Downs.

Apart from the recent installation of a new shot put area and long jump pit at the small oval, a visit from Little Athletics South Australia to local schools and the kindergarten has been arranged for August. “The hard yards are yet to come, so we just need to keep the momentum going,” Natt told The Monitor. “We have been getting some responses through Facebook, with people saying they are really interested, which is good. “Little athletics is good for flexibility and exercise, plus it’s not competitive. It’s about people having a crack and having a sausage afterwards.” Natt encouraged locals to like the ‘Planning for a Roxby Downs Little Athletic Club’ Facebook page as a way of expressing their interest in the project. “We have had heaps of interest on Facebook,” Barrett said.

“I have also received heaps of texts from people saying they are keen.” Natt said he was currently drawing up designs of how the little athletics program could be held on the town and/or school oval without clashing with other sports. He said the proposed time was between 9am and 11am on a Saturday or Sunday. A little athletics club has been attempted in Roxby Downs numerous times before, but Natt and Barrett said they were determined to be successful in their efforts. “We actually have a few people in town that have little athletics experience already,” Natt said. “Fiona (Hooper) and Lena have done it before, even though it wasn’t in Roxby Downs. “Travis Hague is a good runner and triple jumper, too.” Natt said he and Barrett were looking to recruit as many children as possible, along with parents willing to help out. “It needs a large input from parents and volunteers – it is not just a ‘drop and run’ thing,” he added. BY PATRICK GLOVER

Roxby Downs’ first country teams in 20 years are therefore able to use the oval to prepare for this year’s championships. The under 12 and under 16 squads are currently training three nights each week in preparation for the carnival, to be held at Barmera on August 22-23. “Most of the guys already play in the competition up here, but it is about getting them match fit (for 11-a-side games),” D’Arrigo said. “These are the first teams from here to go in 20 years, so just being there for the kids will be a buzz.” D’Arrigo said not only was soccer on the way up, but all sports in Roxby Downs were stronger than ever. “All sports are 100 per cent positive at the moment,” he added.

Student success at SAPSASA

t

Barbara’s Parish School and Roxby Downs Area School students enjoyed success at the SAPSASA carnival in Port Augusta last week.

Competing in both football and netball, RDAS and St Barbara’s came away the division one and two football title winners respectively. After winning their first two games against Flinders View and Port Augusta West, St Barbara’s students suffered their first and only loss of the carnival against Stirling North. They bounced back from this loss, defeating Augusta Park in the semi-final before going on to beat Wilsden Primary School 35 (5.5) to 8 (1.2). In the netball, St Barbara’s division two team won three games and lost two to earn it a spot in the semi-final, in which it lost to Quorn. Meanwhile St Barbara’s division three team suffered five defeats from as many games. BY PATRICK GLOVER

The highest male peg out went to Ryan Reschke (Four Play) at 85. However, Reschke failed to take away the highest for the year, which Steve Warner (FODFA) still holds at 149. The highest female peg out this week was with Liz Chilton (Bull Shooters) at 38. Zoe Leslie (Twisted Flights) is still holding onto the highest peg out for the year at 92. New beginnings for motocross club

After inviting the East Roxby Roos (formerly known as Andamooka Football Club) to utilise the facility over the past two seasons, we have now secured a long-term partnership. The Roos have big plans for the facility, and with a new coach and fresh blood on the committee we are excited to be a part of their momentum in 2015. We are continuing our plans and ideas towards our night meet, which was previously in doubt, but with some promising sponsorship support it appears to be back on track. At this stage we are looking at dates in October, along with a potential two-day event incorporating the Port Augusta motocross club that would also be exciting. It is shaping up to be a big year for some of our members as they embark on different racing dreams. In the juniors we have young guns Ben Dixon, racing in the 50cc class; Bailey Anderson, who has just started racing this year on board a KTM 65cc; while Jazzy McDonald will also start racing competitively in the newly formed girls class. Taj Gow-Smith will be keen to impress in his first year under the Yamaha Junior Racing team, and in the seniors we have high hopes that local Kurt Murray can be right at the pointy end at this year’s Finke Desert Race. Some of these riders have already begun to show their promise with positive results in the Prince of the Gulf meet last weekend in Port Pirie. Aiden Way finished in sixth place and Ben Dixon was third in the division two 50cc class for seven to nine yearolds, while Bailey Anderson placed fifth in the 65cc for the same age group. Meanwhile Bodie Smith competed in two events, finishing fourth in the 128-150/200-250cc for 13 to 16 yearolds and 11th overall. There are some exciting times ahead on and off the track, so keep an eye on our Facebook page for meetings and news.

Sixth spot at nationals WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

F

resh off their win in the final round of the DYOVest Sidecar Grand Slam two weeks ago, local man Trent Headland and UK passenger Daz Whetstone finished sixth in the national championships on the weekend. The pair competed against the country’s top performers in the Australian Sidecar Speedway Championship. Headland said he and Whetstone were pleased with their

efforts but were still chasing the number one spot. “We had so much fun racing at Arunga Park (in the Northern Territory) again on the weekend,” he said. “It was obvious that the committee had put in a lot of time and effort on the track and the event as a whole. “The country’s top teams really put on a show for the crowd, and new Australian champ Justin Plaisted should be commended for how well he rode on the night and in the lead-up. “Well done, mate. “We are now sixth in Australia – nothing to be sneezed at

– but we’ll forever be chasing that top spot. “Thank you so much as always to our generous supporters and sponsors who take us here.” Plaisted and fellow South Australian Sam Harrison took out the national championships ahead of Warren Monson and Matt Morgan, of Victoria, and SA duo Mick Headland and Jesse Headland. Headland and Whetstone will now turn their attention to their final race of the season at Westline Speedway, Whyalla, on Saturday, April 18.
