So here we are, hurtling with unwavering velocity towards the end of the year. The finish line in sight, 2012 is galloping headfirst towards an inevitable future. It’s looking to utter one last spluttering gasp before collapsing in a big heap before the infantile form of 2013’s calendar year explodes out of its breastbone like some Gregorian chest burster. (Slightly gory images aside) you’ll either feel like you’re being dragged kicking and screaming by the relentless passage of time, or you’re sitting up front “woohoooing” with all the bluster your lungs can expel. This month, we’ve got a treat for you folks. A massive double bumper edition of the MMP covering all the eager festive thrills you’ll be wanting to indulge in up to New years, and then all the necessaries to overcome the sobering cold light of January 2013. To celebrate the festive season we briefly considered laminating each issue in egg nog…that however, was ultimately proved to be impractical.

Fashion Quarter) Seeks Musicians You may have noticed a new addition to Womanby Street of late. Just passed Dempseys and on the right carved seemingly straight into the wall. Do not be afraid dear readers, we implore thee, wander inwards and explore. BEHOLD. The Cardiff Fashion Quarter! It’s a brand new venture from a pack of independent fashion retailers looking to offer an affordable retail base within the city centre for all you discerning fashionistas/thrift hunters/folks that just plain like spending money. Stuffed to the gills with vintage and modern clothing, furniture and general miscellaneous knick knacks for both tickle your fancy and make you scream “WANT” in your big loud outdoors voice. Well, they’re currently looking for musicians to perform within the converted cinema space and bring a little extra dimension to the blossoming bohemia they’re trying to cultivate. Emerging Excellence Award . Calling all potential musical geniuses lacking the monetary ability to lubricate their ambitions! The Musicians Benevolent Fund is now totally accepting applications for the next round of their Emerging Excellence award. Earlier this year, the pilot round saw 18 young artists from across a wide range of genres and styles receive awards totally a whopping £35,000 to help in the development of their creative careers. Awfully nice of the fund folks wouldn’t you say? Any individuals or groups who in the first few years of a professional music career are able to demonstrate exceptional talent within their field are eligible and urged to apply. The fund is in particular looking for those with long-term visions for their talents, think more “Radiohead” rather than” Sex Pistols”. There are grants available from £500 right up to £3,000 for those that bag the funds to spend how they set fit . You can find out more information on their website www. helpmusicians.org.uk/eea. The application deadline, I’d like to point out, is Monday the 7th of January. So getcha pitches together folks.

MU Campaign: Work Not Play! Are you a musician whose sick to death getting flipped the bird come post-gig pay check time? Do you keep suffering anger embolisms due to other (let’s be honest, between me and you) less talented musicians getting paid whilst you get kicked to the curb for your hard work? Well if you do fall into this category the MU (musicians union) have started a campaign to try and rectify things a little. This is of course excellent news as the situations detailed above are unfortunately far, far too prominent in the live music scene these days and there’s very little power in the musicians corner to rally against it. If you head over to www.worknotplay.co.uk you’ll find more information about the campaign which encourages musicians to share their personal experiences and stories relating to this enormous injustice. To rip a massive chunk of words said by MU General Secretary John Smith “We are concerned at a growing trend of professional musicians not being paid for their work. In this era of illegal downloading, live revenue is incredibly important and musicians rely on it to be able to survive. “Too many people seem to think that music and entertainment are a hobby rather than a career, and are unaware of the years of training and hard work that it takes to become a professional performer. “It is difficult enough to earn a decent living as a professional musician these days, and, headline artists aside, it is not a highly paid profession. We’re looking to challenge the idea that musicians should be happy to work for free, and we’re delighted that so many musicians and music fans are joining up to this campaign.” Straight up John! Hopefully this campaign can help highlight the plight of under paid, struggling musicians.

What we’ve been listening to Johnny Hidden Orchestra – Overture The opening track from the electronic jazz quartet instantly made me fall in love with them all over again. Simultaneously mysterious, sinister, cinematic and heart wrenching; it reasserts with some serious panache that there’s no one else out there quite like them.
Jim De Ja Vu - Something For Kate Not as cold as the name may suggest! - with a blend of warm enduring Fleet Foxes style harmonies, glistening guitar and synth soundscapes - this is Glühwein for the soul.
Aimee Clinic - See Saw Phazer riddled, psychedelic weirdness that sounds like the audio equivalent of spelunking down Syd Barretts brain pan when he was at his most hairless and mental .
Kate Alabama Shakes - Hold On A track so infused with heart and soul that it practically ruptures your speakers. All big lunged optimism and sun going down, top rolled back, tearing up middle Americas highway desert scapes heading towards whatever the future holds.
Hayley A dance between shimmering dreamy pop vocals and biting bluesy guitar riffs that comes together in a cocktail of swirling, sexy cinematic grandeur. Oh, it’s also damn, damn cool sounding. There’s a Tarantino-knock off waiting to be cut to this.
Sam out in good ol’ boot stompin, cow devouring, ten gallon hat wearing Austin, Texas, United States of ‘merica has been released into the public dominion recently. AND LOW AND BEHOLD! There’s a handful of Welsh artists the runnings. Alt-rock titans ‘the Blackout”, utterly brutal hardcore act “Brutality Will Prevail”, Welsh institution “Charlotte Church” and percussive, psych rompers “islet” will all be hitting the industry conference and festival next March (no doubt alongside more acts from Wales that’ll be announced in the coming weeks). GO GET EM CHAMPS!
King & Country - Time Will Tell Choppy chords and soaring lead lines signposted towards “really rather epic” and arriving at said destination with the confidence of Tom Cruises wayfarer wrapped, trouserless “Risky Business socks on the laminate floor” slide into shot. Great stuff indeedy.

Gallops Hailing from North Wales’ tref fawr Wrexham, Gallops have been battering the ears of astounded audiences since 2007. Trying to describe their sound is one of those journalistic conundrums that will ultimately result in someone saying ‘THEY DON’T SOUND LIKE THAT!’..... But we’ll have a go:

MH: We’re all really excited to finally get our album out. It’s been a long road so it’s good to see things come together. We’re looking forward to people’s reactions too.
MMP: How did you end up as an instrumental band? Was it always your intention?
MMP: What was the recording process like? Was it all done in one go or was it a more fragmented process? MH: The album was recorded over around 9 consecutive days at House of Strange in London in February. It was loads of fun. For a 10-track album that’s a very short time! We have managed to achieve what we wanted to but it was a bit of a rush-around
MH: I wouldn’t say it was a mission statement or anything, like “We’re Gallops and we’re instrumental, end of”. It’s just not something we thought about at first. Our music started as a pure mess-around with software and guitars so we had little idea what we were doing at all at first, still don’t! Maybe we will incorporate vocals in the future, who knows? A couple of the tracks on the LP have vocal samples in
them, which is something we haven’t really done before so perhaps we’ll take it further in that direction. I doubt we would ever use vocals in the traditional sense though!
MMP: The UK ‘instrumental scene’ (if you can call it that) has got some extremely interesting and increasingly successful practitioners - including yourselves & Three Trapped Tigers. Have you got any insight into how its ended up in this place? Has much changed since you started Gallops? MH: I have no idea to be honest. We love Three Trapped Tigers and they are friends of ours but honestly, we have never felt like we are part of an ‘instrumental scene’ at all. Being based in Wrexham we are pretty cutoff from scenes in general, we like it that way though. Personally, ‘scenes’ make me feel a little bit queasy, it means very little to me. There are a lot of great bands doing the instrumental thing and there is definitely a good solid audience for it, there always will be I think. But there is also a good amount of people who are bored to tears by instrumental music. Fair enough..
MMP: The influence of Pink Mist has probably played a big part in helping with the above. How did you end up working with Holy Roar & Blood & Biscuits and how have you found their input?

“ Imagine Battles with heavier, glitches and squawking synths. ” MH: Yep, Pink Mist are great. It’s a really good idea to get a collective of like-minded labels together and combine forces. From where I’m sitting it seems to be working well too! It’s comforting to know that we have that umbrella over our heads. The new album is actually being released on Blood and Biscuits exclusively. For our last 2 releases it was both Holy Roar and Blood and Biscuits. We just got chatting to the labels via the Internet a few years ago, it’s been a good relationship and very relaxed, we’re pleased to be releasing it with them.
MMP: What’s the scene like in Wrexham/N Wales in your view? Anyone we should be looking out for? MH: It’s a healthy one. There are a lot of good hard-working bands. The trouble with Wrexham is that there are more bands than there are punters though! It’s always been like that. I haven’t been out to see any of the newer Wrexham bands for a
while so not too sure who to recommend. Doppelganger seem to be making waves at the moment. Check them out. Mother of Six are a sure shot too.
MMP: We all thoroughly enjoyed your set at Swn in October. How was that gig for you? MH: Thanks! Yeah our gig at Swn this year was pretty special. We were surprised at the ridiculous turnout; it was one of our busiest headline shows ever I think, so that was a great feeling. That fact that we were the only band on that late definitely helped though! The reaction from the crow was really good and our newer songs seemed to be going down well so we were pleased. Someone vomited in the audience during our set too, mission accomplished! Swn is a great festival to be fair.
2013? Touring much? MH: We are off out on a UK tour in February to promote the album so we are looking forward to that. We also have plans for further afield, Europe, USA, Asia etc. so hopefully everything will slot into place. We want to take our music to everyone we possibly we can.
MMP: And finally, we love the promo photo for Yours Sincerely, Dr. Hardcore, but what does it all mean!? MH: If I was bright enough I’d think of something really deep and meaningful to answer this, but the truth is it’s just a bit of a laugh. We just thought we’d whack some face-paint on and see what we could come up with. It’s managed to be both fun and sinister at the same time which works for us I think.

FACE + HEEL Atmosphere, mood and texture… Intangible qualities that are extremely tricky to quantify or accurately pin down in an artists music. What exactly is it about some musicians that allow them to exude so much

Yes, that was a totally unnecessary Pokemon reference back there....If you picture music that sounds a little like Burial and the XX teaming up to rescore Twin Peaks infamous Red Room scene (complete with backwards talking midget and everything) then you’ll be getting somewhere in the region of what “Face + Heel” do . Its music that makes you want to have some horrifying slow motion epiphany or engage in a potentially regrettable groin bumping encounter with an ex. They simultaneously manage to sound hot and cold, exuding a cautious, cinematic optimism via a sinister and other worldly detachment all wrapped up in heaps of sexual tension. They’re something of an anomaly within the Cardiff musical cannon, as far as I’m aware there’s nobody in the city quite making music like this. What makes them even more engaging though is the way that they manage to take these complex studio soundscapes and translate them to a live setting that not only retains their technical precision, but also adds a mesmerizing visual dynamic often missing from performances of this variety of music. There’s always going to be a tension in a band
consisting of one boy and one girl. That’s part of the beauty of such a setup. Live, the two of them face off against one another over a mass of equipment; tables covered in keyboards, synths, laptops and wires. When I saw them recently it was impossible to look away ( audio visual lava lamp syndrome), they were like watching some partially organic machine in action; bodies acting as fleshy extensions to the calculated cold of their equipment. Playing off one another, the mesh of live vocals, samples, instrumentation and pre-programmed beats all whirling into a heady neon lit, noir scented cocktail that made me want to gawk and then clap and then gawk some more. Being as they’re a fairly new musical entity (forming just under a year ago) there’s not a great deal of material out there at the moment, what is on their soundcloud however is marvellous and I heartily encourage you go check it out (recent track “Laughter in the Next Room” in particular). So long as they can continue the path their currently burrowing out within this rather fashionable niche of music, they can likely look forward to an extremely promising future. The Vanities

Much contemporary indie contains monster nods to synth-heavy pop, a la 1980’s romantics, and this release nestles quite comfortably into that bracket. Essentially on offer here are fourtracks of keyboard-driven, dream-pop, each one extremely well produced with a fulfilling and rich sound throughout, complete with Europop beats and occasional Abba-esque backing vocals. Whilst this is certainly an enjoyable collection it’s lacking a little something. Each track threatens to build to a euphoric and memorable crescendo but fall a little short each time, leaving a sense of frustration in its wake. Still, there’s more than enough promise evident on what is otherwise a rather enjoyable foray into the world of modern pop. JS
Maybe I’m an ignorant moron but I’m just a little confused as to… well, what this record is actually trying to achieve sonically/why anyone would choose to listen to it. The songs are all extended field recordings of nature intermittently peppered with the odd bell clang or something that sounds like a glass harmonica drone. If its meant as a meditative back drop, there’s just not enough texture to really get lost in. They utilise a great deal of silence and space over the course of each rather long piece, and this can be a powerful tool when used correctly; but for silence and space to work it relies on a tension existing between the sounds there so that they’re absence can be greater felt. The lack of any such tension here means that there’s no energy in the silence. It’s just…well, silence. All a bit boring. JD

Ghost Carriage Phantoms
Spillers pick of the month Paper Aeroplanes If you’re easily seduced by deeply emotive, folk-laced songs, then Time To Be is for you. Sarah Howells and Richard Llewellyn waft through the tracks like fevered dreams making temperatures softly rise and fall. At times they weave a rich sonic tapestry, other times a cobweb delicate ambient melancholy. This atmospheric EP of butterwouldn’t-melt melodies and sponge-soft grooves cuts a nicely balanced collection of songs. However, don’t expect theses songs to stay with you - although many of their elements will, and this is what makes the whole experience quite special and wonderful.

This is a singular album. Something a little bit special actually. Ghost Carriage Phantoms’ debut concept album release is ten tracks of thoughtfulness and creativity. From opener to closer the feel is (to avoid writing ‘ghostly’) phantasmal. Tracks of subtly pulsing bass and sweet little melodies; soft, grounding acoustic guitar and lyrics flavoured with something of the uncanny are artfully combined to make a standout dreamer of an album. Think ‘Xiu Xiu’ meets ‘Grandaddy.’ Strange combination I know, but it’s well worth verifying for yourself. Strong tracks include ‘Yer Boots,’ the pulsating ‘Videotape’ and the rather eerily observed ‘A Special Kind of Cold.’ As you can see I’m rather taken with this one. Nanook of the North Nanook of the North expertly fuse the tender emotion of Bon Iver with the devastating musicianship of Explosions in the Sky. Opening track ‘Nanook’ is a five minute gathering of sounds that develops into a stunningly atmospheric ambience. Next track ‘We Jump’ is (as its name suggests) injected with more energy; rolling drums, distorted guitars and an apocalyptic theme - reminiscent of Biffy Clyro’s earlier stuff - meander between quietude and impassioned rock-angst. Tender vocals and gentle, twinkling instrumentation in the vein of Panda Eyes, imbued with a powerful twang of sadness bleeds through into Virgin Sands. I would argue there’s something much bigger going on here. A very impressive first offering from a band I look forward to hearing more from. JS

Fist Of The First Man The new project from production whizz kid Zwolf is a collection of 60’s inspired, scuzzy, reverbladen, buzz-saw guitar lines, throbbing bass and weird vocal samples. Frankly, it’s just awesome. Think a trippy LSD fuelled soundtrack to some grindhouse exploitation movie, involving absurd car chases and a never ending cavalcade of strippers with samurai swords. Occasionally dipping into a more ethereal and creepy sound, it’s still rooted firmly within the confines of 60s and 70s slasher pictures. It’s just great. Track 5 kicks things off with the riff from The Ventures “Outer Limits”before it mutates into some psycho jungle rave happening inside Shaft’s brain as he beats the crap out of “the man”. Only minor criticism is some of the songs sound a little uniform. But great work nonetheless.
R. Seliog Having worked extensively with a host of beloved Welsh artists (Cate Le Bon and H Hawkline et al)R. Seilog is releasing his own music for the first time and boy howdy is it a doozy. The tracks in general begin with a repetitive motif before layers of warm analogue blips, off-kilter rhythmic ideas and miscellaneous synth noises are carefully and deliberately added until a rich, full tapestry of sound is constructed. Sometimes sounding like an orchestra of sentient arcade games, at others like tumbling down some sinister K-hole made of TV static. The whole thing is glossed in a super 8 nostalgia that thanks to its inherent honesty and playfulness, side steps ever sounding like a 2-d instagram pastiche. JD

Benfro (AKA Benjamin Mason) Benfro, Benjamin Mason’s alterago is an electronic spin off from his usual psychedelia. The Observable universe EP shows glimpses of this amongst its chilled electronica, incorporating other disparate influences ranging from eastern music to hip hop. This works well for the most part, though at times the tracks seem to finish prematurely; not reaching the crescendo they had potential to reach. Sunless Rose is undoubtedly the highlight of the EP, the slightly sinister opening track really sets the tone for the rest of the EP. Overall this is an interesting EP that doesn’t pander readily to any current trend in electronic music and succeeds in creating an interesting and captivating record. JT
Seconds From Ruin
Demo I heard the intro to this track and thought that maybe it might be going somewhere good. I soon realised, to my dismay that it was not to be. Overdriven guitars, Lostprophets-esque vocals and a relentless synth sound (I can’t decide whether this is the best or the worst thing about it) do not make for an easy listen. 442 is well produced (aside from the aforementioned keyboard part) and, despite decidedly clichéd musical content, all parts are played with considerable competence. The refrain is catchy if unoriginal and basic harmonies make it reasonably listenable despite uninventive lyrical context. If you like this particular style of rock (I’m not going name styles because whenever I do I get told I’m wrong) you might like this. PH

Pun Ra Peddling digital violence on a South Walian scale, Pun Ra blend sampled loops, a talented supporting cast and venomous, perhaps prophetic lyrics. That’s about it. Every track is good in it’s own right, but, assuming you’ve become desensitised to swearing, the album may well just wash over you. The samples are different between tracks, but not within, leading to a rollercoaster of interest. Pun Ra is clearly talented, but P.C.P. never develops into anything but skin deep bruises. It’s a massive waste of potential, with ‘Intro’ and ‘Let it Rip’ in particular showcasing aggressive, yet lo-fi production, coupled with an occasional twist, although the pointless ‘Kill Yourself’ tries too hard to shock and justify parental advisory. This is guerrilla warfare orchestrated by IKEA. It’s really pretty, but homogenous. HP
It’s not hard to see why The Joy Formidable are looking set to be the next stadium filling, global, monster alt-rock band. This song perfectly encapsulates what endears so many to their sound. It’s all instantly gratifying rocket-fuelled guitar riffs, coolly sung catchy vocal lines and exemplary production. Though “Cholla” doesn’t veer wildly away from the blueprint set out on previous releases, it ultimately doesn’t matter. Why mess with a formula that’s proving to be so successful? The track is riff heavy enough to satisfy rock fans, but reins itself in with enough reserve, character and melody to hook even casual pop listeners. The chorus might sing “Where are we going? What are we doing?” but the answer is clearly “Straight to the top”, “Making a pretty big noise”. JD
Prosperina’s debut LP announces itself with all the stomping pomp of the Star Wars Imperial March, although John Williams never turned his guitars up this loud. This is a galumphing, gargantuan, goliath of an album, and one that’s kind of hard to take in all in one go. Most of the nine tracks on show here are slow-moving bone-crushers in the vein of Tool and A Perfect Circle, although the odd burst of speed (‘God vs Darwin’, and the high-octane highlight, ‘Trees Have Eyes’) keeps things fresh. Faith In Sleep is a daunting listen at first, but once you get your teeth into it, you’ll find that every bite is packed with ambition, ability, and hard-rockin’ goodness. JDE

A steady minimalist house beat with layerings of classic techno sounds, this demo from CHIZOL is the sort of thing that might soundtrack some mid 90s inner city footage, the type that speeds up very quickly in a time lapse (complete with car tail light trace lines) and then slows down dramatically in a laser lined club showing the young and the stupid undulating like sexual lava lamps in blue strobe. It steadily builds with the occasional euphoric sweep sound and blippy electronic rhythmic layering, there’s also a women jabbering about learning your craft and trying really hard intermittently spaced over the top. All in all, doesn’t sound half bad…

This 3-track EP from the solid as insert swear word here Cardiff DJ is a seriously frustrating little package. Opener ‘Ring in the Alarm’ is something of a Mike Skinner esque call to arms for a nation in the midst of serious government shaped bumming, but it doesn’t possess enough bite to really push its point across. The production is lacking the necessary aggression. Though the vocal hook performed by Benji Talbot does hang around your head for some time, there’re just a certain energy and momentum lacking from it on the whole. One Blood stands out production wise, with a spacey, reverb laden beat coming complete with some spacey dubbed-out moments, but it’s again marred by the vocals. F-Block builds his rhythmic layering in a very subtle and gradual manner that, though effective once the tracks arrive at a crescendo, could have done with some clever editing to prevent them over-staying their welcome and meandering into no man’s land during the mid-sections.

It’s one thing to shoot for an epic, swooping catchy chorus and quite another to handsomely achieve it. These twangsome titans from Cardiff have hit the bullseye here, firing their crisp Beatledelic pop lucidity dead-centre. Yet again they’ve managed to craft something so irresistible that you wouldn’t object if they carried on the chorus for another hour. This single immediately meets expectations but Houdini Dax have now spread their sonic net wider to allow new shades to seep in. A Pixieesque instrumental passage and splashes of haunting piano cadences now punctuate their glistening melodic songcraft. A commanding piece of pop genius. Yes, it’s that good. SWH
Firstly, Rhodri Brooks has decided to name every one of his songs “Pop Song Number...” then a figure from one to twelve. Which is fine. Whatever. Not a problem. Unless of course all your tracks sort of bleed together into one big long song, then it’s a little less than helpful or imaginative; unless that was the intention of course, in which case, bravo. The songs themselves are strange little numbers, often sounding a little listless or out of energy, sung in a subdued almost lazy vocal style, they tend to meander around with a lack of direction or melody to latch onto before getting occasionally punctuated with some clever little spots of weird instrumentation. All in all it sounds like the slightly drunk soundtrack to a strange cheese dream being dreamt by an odd sock wearing fan of
