It’s a southern-fried comedy with lots of heart and a sweet ending. Later this month, local theatre group the South Peace Players will take to the stage for the Red Velvet Cake War, a raucous comedy set at a family reunion in the fictitious town of Sweetgum, Texas. Twelve actors are involved in the production, some of whom appeared in the Last Round-up of the Guacamole Queens, another chapter in a series of plays following the misadventures of the Verdeen cousins “It went over quite well, and so now we’re having another episode with a brand new story,” said Mary Beaulne, one of the players. The three Verdeen cousins are the leads in the story. Pat Finkle plays
Gaynelle, who, in the lead-up to the events in the play, “accidentally” crashes her minivan through the wall of her husband’s girlfriend’s doublewide trailer. Terri Foster appears as Jimmie Wyvette, a local Western Wear magnate, and Louise Rogers is Peaches, a mortuary cosmetologist. Roger Anderson is back as Uncle Aubrey, Beaulne plays Aunt LaMerle and Everett Beaulne directs and appears as Sheriff Grover Lout. Margaret Anderson, Jeannie Matthews, Judith Chinn, Annie Barton, Julie Ortynsky and John Carnahan round out the cast. The show runs Feb. 23-26 at the South Peace United Church. COLOSSEUM hits next week! What started in May as a Word file being exchanged by a couple newspaper editors on their laptops, becomes reality next week as the immersive dinner theatre and live music experience COLOSSEUM opens on Valentine’s Day in Fort St. John featuring actors, Actors, producers, musicians, and directors, from the Dawson Creek, Pouce Coupe, Taylor, and the Energetic City, FSJ. The evening is billed as a mealbased, interactive and “surround sound” show in terms of performance. Tickets for the V-Day opening night are nearly sold out. “We are getting down to individual seats for that evening and tickets are moving for our Feb 24 and 25 evening as well,” says director and producer Matt Preprost. Both producer Preprost and Rob Brown have been flabbergasted by the community support. “We have had unsolicited offers
to help and partner with community groups, non-profits, businesses, and individuals from throughout the Peace region,” says Brown. “It is refreshing.” On the COLOSSEUM reservation list for the show include; a Wall Street broker, a newspaper critic, and two hoodlums looking for their cut of owner Lou Largo’s family business. As demands pile up, Largo must also juggle his books and business. The production is billed as an adult crime drama. Hit the Pomeroy Hotel this Valentine’s Day and an extended run on February 24 and 25 for an explosive and immersive dinner theatre experience featuring six stages of sizzling drama.
