Damaging effects of UV in the summer sun

Despite the recent teasing of intermittent weather, summer is here. The Coast’s numerous and stunning beaches, cafes and markets have all been calling us – and we have answered! How good is it to be taking some much-needed time outside in nature?

Just as you’d wear your seatbelt in a car, a lifejacket on the water and sunblock every day (bonus points if you reapply regularly), sunglasses with UV protection are an absolute must in the summer sun. Lucky for you, we have some absolutely STUNNING sunglasses that look sensational and will help to protect your eyes. Don’t forget, for those who wear prescription glasses, we can put your prescription into your sunglasses too.

Long-term exposure to even small amounts of UV radiation can increase your risk of developing a cataract or macular degeneration. UV exposure adds up over time. It can also cause tissue elevations on the surface of your eye. These are called pingueculae and pterygia.

A common symptom of sun damage in the eyes is watery or teary eyes due to dryness. This is your body naturally increasing tear production in order to attempt to heal the eye. You can also look out for things such as wrinkles, accentuated skin furrows, sagging, loss of elasticity and mottled pigmentation.

Because the skin on and around your eyelid is the thinnest of your whole body, it’s incredibly important to protect this skin too, not just your eyes.

Some ways to help protect your eyes and the surrounding skin against the sun include:

• wearing sunglasses year-round whenever you are out in the sun

• choosing lenses that block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB light

• wearing a brimmed hat to protect your face and the top of your head

Regular eye examinations allow your optometrist to monitor your eyes, both inside and out, for changes over time. If you have any concerns about lumps, bumps or skin pigment changes on or near your eyes, or any issues with your vision, please contact us as soon as possible so we can help.
