Millwater ROMEOs

For the May meeting of the Millwater ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out), we did something a bit different from previous outings. Thirteen of the group (almost a full muster) went Ten Pin Bowling, followed by lunch at JAC’s Restaurant and Bar at Whangaparaoa Plaza. One of the aims of the group is to support local businesses and not to stray too far away from home unless it is for something special that is not available locally.

We all met at Tenpin Whangaparaoa and took over 4 bowling alleys. None of us had done much bowling previously so the level of bowling was fairly erratic. Thank goodness for automated scoring to help keep track of our scores! The highest score was 109 (well done Roger) and it went downhill from there. The games were a lot of fun and everyone was able to work up a thirst and an appetite for the second event of the day.

For lunch we walked 120 metres up the hill to JAC’s Restaurant and Bar, which enjoys a panoramic north-facing view over Whangaparaoa and out to sea. Beginning with our favourite drink we then ordered from the $13.50 lunch menu, which offered sufficient variety for everyone to find something to eat that they enjoyed. We were very fortunate to be able to sit over a drink and food, chatting with good company and enjoying the view and the spacious ambience of JAC’s.

Next it was back to the host’s home for coffee and nibbles. It is a ROMEO tradition that each month a different member organises the day and then members go back to his home after lunch, to round off the afternoon. This is also good opportunity to discuss whatever is on people’s minds. One topic that was discussed was how fortunate we are to live in a safe and secure country, when compared to many other countries around the world where people’s safety and security are at risk.
