The weather is changing and it’s quickly coming into cold and flu season. Along with the flu vaccinations Hickeys Pharmacy can provide, there are various other products we can offer.

BUCCALINE BERNA AND IMMUNE BOOSTERS

Buccaline tablets are a pharmacist-only medicine, which provides cover against secondary infections related to colds and is great for people who get sick regularly in the winter months. This product acts by stimulating your immune system to fight bacterial infections and reduce the risk of the problem progressing any further and therefore minimising the chance of having to go and see the doctor.

Immune boosters such as GO Healthy Vir-Defence or Good Health Viralex have high-strength Olive Leaf Extract, which is both antibacterial and antiviral. Incorporated in a capsule with garlic, astragalus, Echinacea and Vitamin C, these supplements help to kick-start the immune system into overdrive, to help combat colds and get your body back up and running.

USING PROBIOTICS WHEN TAKING ANTIBIOTICS

Antibiotics prescribed by the doctor not only kill the bad bacteria inside us, but also the good ones. 70% of your immune system comes from your gut and the levels of bacteria such as lactobacillus acidophilus are depleted when taking antibiotics. Therefore, people find that during a course of antibiotics they are more prone to things such as stomach pain, flatulence, diarrhoea or thrush. In certain people their immune systems are so depleted that they have to take multiple courses of antibiotics to get over the infection. We recommend a probiotic such as “Go Healthy Antibiotic Support” in conjunction with the antibiotic to restore some of the ‘good’ bacteria lost and to minimise your chance of getting any nasty side-effects. A product has also been formulated in a powder form for children as their immune systems are not as developed as adults.
