Definition: the art or practice of conceptualising, capturing and processing photographs.

You’re up early and ready for a morning walk on the beach. It’s an autumn morning, the air is crisp and fresh, you can hear the waves crashing on the shore and the smell of the sea is somehow soothing. The warmth from the rising sun, the slight breeze and the solitude on the beach at this time of the day is what we really love about early morning walks on the shore.
The view of the sun rising over the horizon is incredible! The gradient of blues in the sky, the saturated tones of reds, oranges and yellows are impressive and the way they reflect onto the surface of the water forces you to take out your smartphone and capture this gorgeous moment.
However, more often than not, after we click the shutter and review our photograph, it’s never quite as we saw it. This is partly because there is more involved in that moment than just visual. We are trying to capture the emotions we are feeling, the smells, the beautiful scene; ultimately, we are trying to capture and freeze that memory so that we can look back and experience the same emotions over and over again. The issue we often face is that the camera doesn’t always interpret the scene the way we see and remember it.
In the next issue of the Millwater Mag, we take a closer look at the definition and the steps that are often missed; namely, conceptualising and processing. By introducing these steps into the process you can drastically improve your photography.
