The Memory Keepers

Preserving Daily Life with your Phone And The Unfolding Year

you and i

WHATS THE PROJECT?

We collaborate on a photo project over a year.

I, guide you through telling the story of your year. I'll show you my system for creating your stories.

I'll tell you everything I know about photography. In particular about photography on your phone (though you can use any camera you like).

All whilst I write my book and send you a piece of it each week.

You, try it out by photographing your daily life using this method. You, build and develop your photography and storytelling skills over the year. You, use it like a little classroom. You can ask me anything you want to know, You can suggest things you'd like to learn and try. Basically be my beta testers to see if my system for telling stories about every day life works.

What do think?

For more info on what, why, when and how, read this starter pack then go over to the the memory keepers HQ. which is over at…, www.theunfolding

Just in case you were worried, It's all free, there are no hidden costs that will suddenly jump out at you!

why now?

good point

WHY NOT JAN TO JAN?

Why not January 1st to start? Surely thats neater and that’s the beginning of the year. Well here’s what I’m thinking. January is full of challenges and resolutions and pressure to start things. It’s overcrowded with new beginnings. Why can’t a new beginning be whenever you want it to be. Turns out that March is really the true start of the year. What? Well if you go back to when we lived off the land, in sync and flow with, nature it is.

In the pagan tradition, around March 20th is the equinox. The one day of the year where day and night are the same length. March is the real time of new beginnings. New life. When the lambs are born and the flowers finally make their way through the cold crusty, land gasping for light. Finally they made it. That says let’s start something to me. That resonates more than any January sale. The whole of spring has always symbolised renewal and regrowth, hope and possibility. A dull, grey January. Broke, partied out and cold. Seeing all the stuff you just bought a few weeks ago for a pretty penny chucked in a bargain bin by the till. Just because its January.

Anyway it doesn’t even matter when you start, what you start. What matters is you do, anytime.

The future you, a year from now, ten years from now, will be happy you did.

There’s a proverb from the 17th century that says ‘In like a lion, out like a lamb’. This all goes back to weather folklore and astrology, which seems like a good enough reason. I think nature and the solar system probably have a better grip on what they are doing than we do so I’ll certainly take them as my guide. The weather is kind of crappy and volatile as we come into March and roars like a lion. By the end of March its more chill and demure and comes out like a lamb.

Our ancestors believed in balance in life and weather and would be hopeful that if March weather started out stormy it would mean that it would end calmly. It is of course also lambing season and if you’re christian it's Easter. Which I think we all know is less about chocolate eggs and more to do with the resurrection of Jesus.

He certainly had a well deserved new beginning there.

In astrology the constellations of Leo the Lion and Aries the ram (or lamb) have Leo rising at the beginning of March in the east and Aries setting at the end of March in the west.

Farming, astrology, weather, nature, religion. So there you have it, whichever way you look, March is the beginning of the year and I’m sticking to it.

New beginning and possibility.

Now that’s a reason to start something.

Lets start the last Monday in March Monday 31st March

I’ll send you my frst message on the Sunday before.

the plan

WHAT AND WHY?

There is somewhat of a profound importance weaved in amongst the seemingly mundane and ordinary of daily life. There is a term for those things, they are the ‘infra-ordinary’. That just sounds more special.

I love family photos. I mean I’m that person who will happily look at people’s sunset pictures and holiday slideshows. Dusty family albums three generations back.

I don’t mean those family photos taken in white studios. Or the ones wearing matching tan outfits twirling in lavender fields. Sorry if you have any of those. But I mean real daily life.

I have been immersed in the world of phone photography for the last ten years and during that time I’ve been documenting my kid’s lives. I always thought that this was an aside from the photography that I really wanted to do. That was until I realised it was, well, everything I only wanted to do. It was right there all the time.

I had these ten years been contemplating writing something that I couldn’t find anywhere.

A manual for real people and real lives and using a camera everyone could afford and have access to. Well the iPhone came along and took care of the camera part. And I had a ‘recipe’ I always used. A recipe I felt was a fool proof way to tell a story in pictures.

Over time I used this recipe to tell my stories and developed a bunch of hacks and techniques that worked for me. I put all these ideas, these ingredients, in a pot and set them on a steady simmer on the back burner of my mind. Let that simmer for say, well, ten years.

Then one day, as I came out of the fog of being a mum to little kids, I peered tentatively inside that pot. Expecting of course to find some charred remains. Instead, I thought, you know what ‘I could make some thing out of that’. And here it is… well here it will be in 52 weeks time. As we go about this unfolding year my plan is to create 52 pieces of content that I will send to you. I will put together everything I know about telling stories of everyday life using your phone. Every little thing. Put together they will make up the book I was once looking for.

To my mind there are four very basic ingredients. These are all you need to tell a story in pictures as memorable and delicious as the best dish you’ve

ever had.

the phone

While the phone has been important to me in recording these last ten years, it is really the recording of daily life that matters and not the mode. So if you feel at home with any other camera please use that. Using a phone is not a prerequisite.

Curiously however I now only use a phone for my photography. It’s a camera that takes calls for me, much to the annoyance of everyone I know. The phone is exciting for the photography world. For lots of worlds. It has liberated creativity.

That liberation of the everyday person that we all are, is what sparked a light in me.

I’m not even totally sure why. With a background in teaching photography came the knowledge to use any camera I wanted. Why was it that this little guy was the only one I wanted to use? The only one that sparked creativity?

Maybe it’s the limitations? They can force you to think differently. Maybe its the empowerment aspect. Creativity is many things of course but I think the real purpose of creativity is change. To see and think differently. That’s what art is for right? So we can understand this human condition we find ourselves in, from many points of view.

Caption

When only some people are able to express themselves, we only see one point of view. Or maybe I just like breaking rules and I love the idea of making something highbrow out of something low. Something that’s not a “proper camera”.

One of my favourite people in the world is George Eastman, founder of Kodak. Namely because he found a way to empower the everyday person to tell their own stories. He was also supposed to be a nice, cool guy, who was great to work for and gave most of his money away. He enabled people to record their life from were they stood. With the Kodak Brownie he democratised what was a medium available only to the few.

Can you imagine what history would have been lost, what things we wouldn’t have learned about humanity had he not done that?

Stories have great power to them and getting to be represented on your own terms builds a personal legacy.

So I wanted to see how a year looked in my life… then I wanted to see how it looked in your life too.

‘Stories possess a spark, a power: to confront, connect, destroy and transform and even - Bobette Buster
‘These images are not even for NOW… they are for LATER, they are postcards to the FUTURE.’

sign up 1.

Do you want to join me?

I’m going to go on a mission to tell the story of my year in 2025. Telling a little story a week that builds up month by month.

Alongside that I’m going to write down everything I know about photography, recording life and making visual stories. So that in a year’s time it ends up looking more like a book rather than a bunch or ramblings scribbled on A5 cards, as is

Do you want to come on the journey with me? You help me by letting me know what you want to learn. What you get stuck on and what doesn’t make sense. And in return I’ll guide you through the whole thing and tell you everything I know.

I’ll send you a piece of my book every week along with lots of resources to help you and hopefully inspire you. Tutorials, tips, prompts, challenges, theory, all the stuff.

what do you think?

If you do want to join, step 1. is to go over to the Memory HQ and sign up. www.themememorykeepers.com

You’re not obligated to do anything by signing up and it’s free. Just a way for us to keep in touch with each other. Then I will send you the weekly letter every Sunday. I’m calling it a letter but its obviously a boring old email. I can’t bring myself to write the word email. Doesn’t that just put you right off!

Letter sounds more magical. I’m thinking of the compilation of these “letters” as more of an almanac or an annual. These,

This letter will contain a 52th of the book I said I’m writing. It will include a weekly challenge for those who want it. Also tips, tutorials, inspiration and great stories about stories.

On Sunday I’ll add all these new things to the site. I hope it to become an ever growing resource and that you feel you can build on your skills and knowledge each week whilst crafting your year long visual legacy.

So letter it is. If I could I’d train Gilbert, our resident seagull to fly it over to you.

I believe that to make a compelling and emotive visual story you only need four types of images. Four “ingredients” for the story recipe.

the recipe 2.

LANSCAPE DETAIL PORTRAIT ACTION

The Recipe is at the core of this process. Everything centres around this idea that as long as you have these four elements you can tell a great story.

In the coming weeks I’ll be kicking off the content of my book by breaking down each one. Showing you examples, tips, history, tutorials. There’s ideas, prompts and challenges for you to try for each one. Then we put them all together and start making stories. I will be doing lots more about visual narrative, including things like, how its used in film. We’ll use Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey to understand all stories.

The recipe is something I have always had in mind when I’m taking pictures. Although I love a perfect single image, the thing that really resonates with me is a series. A story. Now this is obviously not my idea. It is a structure that is imprinted into humanity.

Throughout time, in all corners of the globe, all religions and cultures, we, as humans have communicated ideas through stories. We’ve passed down lessons and traditions. Everything from twitter to prayers to poems and songs. Books and rap and brands and, well everything. They all carry this through line that is the recipe.

You can call it the narrative, the structure, the story arc. Here’s a little profile of each to get you started.

places

‘PLACES’ IS YOUR LANDSCAPE.

Firstly there is an image that establishes the story and it’s context. That would be, say, it’s geographical place in the world and maybe anchoring it in a period in time. It may also set the mood, the tone and/ or a genre.

SHOT TYPE: This would ordinarily be a wide shot even a panoramic with everything in focus. Traditionally also it would also be free of people.

Think of the shot you normally see at the beginning of a film while the opening credits are coming up.

people

‘PEOPLE’ IS YOUR PORTRAIT

This image establishes who the main character is. We could also call them the protagonist or the hero. It’s whose eyes and point of view we will see the story through. It is a representation of a character. They are normally mid shots (from waist up) but they absolutely don’t have to be. Some of the most interesting portraits don’t even show most of the person.

SHOT TYPE: Mid shot

details

‘DETAILS’ ARE YOUR OBJECTS.

They are things, not people, but they can be details that give us clues about people. They are not always objects but often are. They can be patterns, textures or shapes. They can be significant colours. Seemingly insignificant but actually very telling. Details give us clues.

Maybe they give clues to the personality of a character. It may reveal to us an aspect of their personality or potential action that may unfold.

action things that happen

‘ACTION’ IS YOUR THING THAT HAPPENS

It’s the energy. We could call this the motion. Emotion is energy in motion. It could be called the conflict or the hero’s call to action. It really is just things that happen.

It doesn’t have to be a physical action. It can be emotional, it can be something that changes the character, moves them and the story forward.

SHOT TYPE: In film this would be a tracking shot that follows the action unfolding. In the context of still images it could be movement frozen or blurred.

one/thing has a story every

ACTION IS MOTION, IT’S ANYTHING THAT MOVES THINGS OR MOVES PEOPLE.

THE SYS TEM C.

1. Organise the backlog of your images.

2. Make stories out of your past photos.

3. Do something with them so you can actually see them outside of your phone.

4. Set you up to be organised moving forward and never be in that mess again!

It took me forever to do this in a way that wasn’t too fiddly and was quick. In the end I think it’s the easiest way to do what is a bit of a pain of a job. Flash forward one month though and you will be happy you were your future friend.

It will especially help you if you are doing the year long challenge. Keep everything in check without wanting to have a meltdown and throw your phone at the wall.

It doesn’t help by the way I’ve tried that.

It’s designed to make it achievable and not have you burnt out and going to watch Netflix instead. By the way, I should say, you can do this while watching Netflix! Its small efforts daily.

Structured for 10 mins a day to have you organised in a few weeks.

It Includes:

1. How to use Slidebox to organise images.

2. How to gather all your images from all devices to one spot.

3. How to set up your filing system.

4. The difference between editing picking and curating.

5. How to know what to keep and what to throw away with my picking protocol.

6. The recipe and how to tell a story with your old images.

7. Using grids to help you.

8. A challenge to find four stories from last year.

9. How to do editing adjustments, add colour and black and white.

10. How to add texture.

11. How to set up your system for future images.

12. What things you can actually make from your stories. How and where?

13. File formats

14. Understanding Aspect Ratio and printing.

- Muriel Rukeyser
Phew. That’s all done now just go about your week and take photos.

I decided against a picture a day. This is because the quickest way for me to be zero interested in taking any photos is to be forced to take a picture everyday.

I know many people love 365 projects but here we are not looking to take 365 random pictures. We are looking to tell stories. But…if one a day works better

I just want you to relax, go about your week and and keep an eye out for the magical possibilities of the four elements of the recipe.

to start…

I thought we should take the frst week to just prepare and get in the groove & mindset of the Memory Keepers journey.

A warm up lets say. No pressure no stress. So let’s do a little challenge related to one of recipe ingredients…DETAIL.

…followed by

For the frst three weeks of April we’ll go through the rest of the recipe ingredients one by one.

Then, on the last week in April well put them altogether.

We are starting on Monday March 24th, four days after the equinox. So we’ll have one week left of March, perfect for a warm up challenge.

And boom, we’re off to the races. Think of a dance class where you practice individual moves then bring them all into one final routine.

DET AIL objects + things

Starter challenge on DETAIL.

Detail is something that brings us into the situation. Often a close up but it doesn’t need to be. It indicates to maybe a personality or character trait or potential action about to take place.

You could also think of detail as objects or things, or stuff. The Detail shot also can be an image that, through compositional techniques, draws attention to a specific detail of a subject that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Go here to find more about the challenge and more information about Detail with history and ideas.

Have a go at the starter challenge for your first week out of the gates. It’s fun to do to get you in the mindset. But if it doesn’t spark and inspiration for you don’t worry.

Caption

The starter challenge is all about finding what I like to call ‘stuff on the floor’. Seems weird but it’s fun and more interesting then you might first think!

sunday 5.

How shall we do this?
"Stories are memory aids, instruction manuals and moral compasses”.
- Aleks Krotoski

I chose Picter as a place were we can all upload without the stresses that come with social media. I hope you find it easy to use. Only post if you want to. Remember pressure is the quickest way to squash creativity. Some might say otherwise but thats how I feel. So no pressure to post anything.

PICTR a.

But you can always come over on Sunday and see my weekly image breakdown. I'll post my four images of that week and a breakdown of, how I found them, why i chose them. I'll also look at what I could have improved on and how I edit them.

There may be others who do post their pictures which will be fun to see too.

You sign up on the The Memory Keepers website and then I’ll send you an invite to join the Pictr group project. I’ll also send you a more detailed guide of how to use the group.

REMEMBER

If you have any ideas I’d love to hear them. For example…

For now I’ll just say that…you log onto Pictr on Sunday and go into the week we are on.

Then add a ‘Collection’ in your name and upload your four images. You can add descriptions to them if you want.

If something is confusing and could be made simpler. If I’ve left something out. If there are things you get stuck on. Or if there’s anything in particular you would love to know about.

Just throw it out there!

On the website you’ll fnd the Pictr Log in on the top right of the home page under the More tab.

If you do enjoy posting on your social media you could post your four images there. if you want to join Glass you can post on there too. They have a new ‘Series’ feature on Glass that is perfect for this mission.

POST & TAG b.

I personally don’t enjoy posting on Instagram and find it a bit of a stressful arena. But Glass feels more intimate and relaxed and the people there are all interested in photography. For any social media posts tag #theunfoldingyear so we can find each other.

#theunfoldin

gyear

I think it’s really helpful to see your images in some kind of grid whilst you are putting together your story. This way you are able to view them next to each and in various orders. It can make a big difference how the story “reads” by which images are next to each other and how they work together.

DIPTIC c.

I always use the app Diptic to do this.

You can also just post them as a slideshow like you would normally do on Instagram. People can swipe through them one after the other.

Caption

diptychs

A Diptych is a set of two images next to each other. The word diptych comes from the Greek word diptychos, which means “double-folded”.

triptychs

A Triptych is a set of three images next to each other. The word triptych comes from the Greek word triptykhos, which means “three-layered”. They can be used to create narrative.

Of course we are telling a story of four so you can make a four grid. There’s all sorts of options on there for up to nine images.

Another great option for anyone interested is to join Glass Photo App. It’s a community that is just about loving photography and making the photos look beautiful and take centre stage.

GLASS d.

They recently launched a feature called SERIES that is just perfect for this mission. It allows you to post an ongoing series. It costs £6.99 per month or £39.99 for the year. I know that’s not for everyone but I highly recommend it. And it does have a 14 day free trial.

a letter

I’ll send you the letter on Sunday and guide you step by step through the whole year.

the book 7.

As I said, I want to put all this into a book as we go. Every week I’ll be sending you a little piece of it. Then I’m going to add that to the website.

Essentially they are blog posts and you’ll be able to find them on the site under The Annual tab.

I thought an annual was fitting as it has that childhood nostalgia and is a compilation of a year.

And that’s what this project is, a compilation of a year. You’re going to compile your visual story over a year and I’m going to compile this photography book over a year.

WHERE TO FIND ME

AND WHAT I’LL BE UP TO…

SUNDAYS

* I’ll be sending you a new section of the book in a “letter”. Including a prompt and challenge for the week if you want it.

* I’ll post my four recipe images on the on Instagram @theunfoldingyear and on Glass. I’ll also be posting them on Pictr.

* Here I will also post my week in review. I’ll talk about what my pictures are about, how I got them and how I edited them.

* I’ll hashtag #theunfoldingyear everywhere.

* I’ll be adding all the new content i send you each Sunday to the website.

* I will hang out on Pictr on Sunday to see your stories for anyone who wants to post. I will leave comments and I can answer any questions you might have about anything to do with photography.

MONDAYS + FRIDAYS

* I’ll answer any DMs on Instagram and Glass between 8:00 - 11:00 Mondays and Fridays.

‘These images are not even for now… they are for later, they are postcards to the future.’

REM EMB ER

1. Only post your pictures if you want to.

2. Leave suggestions for me including any requests for things you’d like to do/ know and anything you're stuck on.

3. You can start the challenge WHENEVER you want to. A year from March to March is still a year just because it doesn’t seem as neat as Jan to Jan. Don’t let not starting at a certain time put you of, it really doesn’t matter.

4. Equally don’t worry if you miss a week, this is not an exercise in discipline.

DON'T let that put you of. Life is busy and stuf happens. Likely some weeks you’ll have way more than four to use and others less, or you forget to do it at all.

It’s just a guide but at the end of the month you can make up your four stories of four out of all the pictures from that month. So don’t stress.

5. When it comes to the end of the month I’ll send a guide and plan for how to make up your month.

6. Leave suggestions or comments for others only if you want to. But obviously…be nice.

7. If you hate posting on social media i get it, so do I, just keep your posting to the Pictr group.
