Aswereflectonthispastyear,itisclear thatithasbeenayearofboth opportunitiesandsacrifices.
Theincreasingdemandforourservices, particularlyamongpatientswhodonot haveEnglishastheirfirstlanguage,has highlightedthecriticalroleweplayinour community.Manyofthesepatientshave recentlyimmigratedtotheUnitedStates orareintheprocessofseekingasylum. Theirstorieshavedeeplytouchedus,as theyoftenrecountjourneysmarkedby unimaginablechallenges traveling throughmultiplecountries,sometimeson foot,andenduringsignificanthardships alongtheway.
Theseexperiencesleavelastingscars We haveseenfirsthandhowthetraumaof
displacementcanmakeeventhe simplestdecisionsaboutmedicalcare overwhelming.Ourteamhasworked tirelesslytoaddresstheirmedicalneeds andprovidetheemotional,spiritual,and psychologicalsupportnecessaryfor healing.
Opportunityandsacrificeareoften intertwinedformanyofourpatientsas theystrivetoprovideabetterfuturefor theirchildren-somethingweallcan relateto.
Yet,formany,theoddsarestacked againstthem Lackofaccessto transportation,childcare,stablehousing, oractiveMedicaidlimitstheirchoices andleavesthemcutofffrommedical servicesthatmostofustakeforgranted.
Ourincomeprojectionsfellshort,making budgetcutsnecessarytoalignwithour currentfinancialreality. Sacrifices
Staffingchangeswerenecessaryand implementedinawaythatminimized patientimpact.
Themajorityofpaidstaffchoseto becomevolunteers.Thoseremaining tookpaycutsorworkedunpaid overtime.
Wearereducingthenumberof patientsweseewithactiveMedicaid andfocusingontheuninsured. Themobileclinic’sagemaderepairs prohibitivelyexpensiveonceHuron ValleyAmbulancecouldnolonger providefreemaintenance. TheplannedreopeningoftheFlint cliniclocationwasdelayeddueto staffingandbudgetcuts.
Untreatedmentalhealthconditions, intimate-partnerviolence,andOpioid UseDisorderprovideadditionalbarriers forasubsetofourpopulation. Thisyear, wehavepartneredwithlocaluniversities, hospitals,andlocalagenciestoprovide targetedsupportforthesepatients.
Sincewestartedtheclinic,wehave believedthatapowerfulwaytoimpact thewaymedicalcareisdeliveredisto seektoinfluencethenextgenerationof medicalproviders.Wevaluethe opportunitytoprovideclinical experienceforpre-medstudents, medicalstudents,medicalresidents, studentnurses,physicianassistants,and publichealthstudents.

Whiletheyearbroughtmany challenges,TheLukeClinicremained committedtoprovidingfreeprenatal andinfantcaretothoselivinginacity withoneofthehighestinfantmortality ratesinthecountry.Werecognizethe contributingfactorsandhave developedamodelofcaretoaddress themmedically,spiritually,and practically.

Werecognizethatblackmaternal mortalityratesare2.8timeshigherthan theirwhitecounterparts;blacknonHispanicinfantsarethreetimesmore likelytodiebeforetheirfirstbirthday, andblackwomenexperience significantlyhigherratesofpreeclampsia.Theseareallstatisticsthat wehavedevelopedprogrammingto addressspecifically.
