Sowing Seeds Indoors for Spring Planting—Mar 7 6:30pm at the public library. Whether you have a dedicated vegetable bed in your backyard, or a cluster of containers on your patio, it all starts out the same way. You have to plant your seeds, and germinating seeds inside your home is the best way to do so, especially for seeds that are hard to start. Starting seeds indoors is ideal if you want to get a head start on the season, or if the weather is still too hot or too cold to put anything in the ground. This simple stepby-step tutorial will take you from seed to seedling with a minimum of fuss. Hosted by REAPS Old Time Fiddle Dance—Mar 9 9-7pm at the Elks Hall. All ages dance with local fiddle performers. Bring your friends, bring your kids, bring your parents. Hello Spring Market—Mar 9 10am-4pm at the PG Roll-A6

1. In a large mixing bowl (this is my favorite mixing bowl), combine the water, yeast, and sugar. 2. Stir until dissolved, then add in the egg and salt. 3. Add the flour one cup at a time. Once the mixture is too stiff to mix with a fork, transferred it to a well -floured countertop. 4. Knead for 4-5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if the dough is continues to stick to your hands. 5. Shape the smooth dough into a ball and place in a bowl. Cover with a dish cloth and let rise in a warm place for one hour (or until the dough has doubled). After this first rise is complete, use these directions to turn it into the following baked goods: SANDWICH BREAD:

Grease a standard-sized loaf pan (9″x5″). After the first rise is complete, punch down the dough and shape it into a “log”. Place it into the loaf pan and allow to rise 20-30 more minutes, or until it starts to peek over the edge of the pan. Bake in a 350* oven for 25-30 minutes, or until lightly browned.

PIZZA:

Other People's Treasures is hosting an Antique & Collectibles Fair—Apr 5 10am-5pm and Apr 6 10am-4pm at the PG Roll-A-Dome. Admission is $5 per person, ages 15 and under are free to get in. Vendors can reach out to Randy at cajun1811@hotmail.com / 250-614-3083

After the first rise is complete, press the dough into a 12-inch circle on a baking stone, baking sheet, or this cast iron pizza pan (you can also use a standard cookie sheet if that’s all you have). Top with sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings. Bake in a 450* oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly. DINNER ROLLS: After the first rise is complete, divide the dough into 15 pieces. Shape into balls and arrange in a greased 9×13-inch pan (this oil sprayer doesn’t use aerosol). Rise for an additional 30 minutes in a warm place. Bake at 375* for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. CINNAMON ROLLS: After the first rise is complete, roll the dough into a 20 x 13-inch rectangle on a floured countertop. Spread 4 tablespoons of softened butter on top (leave 1/2-inch margin around the edges), and sprinkle with 1/2 cup brown sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon. Starting on the long side, roll it up and press the seam together to seal the roll. Using a serrated knife, cut into 12 rolls. Arrange the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch pan and allow to rise for 30 minutes, or until the rolls are puffy. Bake in a 350* oven for 25 minutes, or until golden brown. 2024 Spring Forecast While the winter may end in a snowy blast in many regions, the 2024 Farmer's Almanac Spring Weather Forecast favours an early spring – with a few exceptions. Spring officially arrives with the spring equinox on March 19. What's in store for springtime in Canada? “Canada will see above-average precipitation, except for near- to below-average amounts from British Columbia up into the Yukon,” the 2024 Farmer's Almanac Spring Weather Forecast predicts. “Temperatures will largely be near or above normal, but the chill may hold on longer across the Northwest Territories.” March March is expected to be a “warmer-than-normal month” in most of Canada, except for southern Ontario, the eastern Prairies, and the Northwest Territories. March is expected to be dry in the eastern parts of the country, while other areas can expect more rain than usual. April April temperatures are forecast to be warmer than normal across eastern Quebec, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, and near to below normal elsewhere.

Precipitation will be above normal from Atlantic Canada westward through the Prairies and in the Northwest Territories, and near to below normal elsewhere. May Warm “above average” temperatures will be in store from the Maritimes through Quebec and in the Northwest Territories. Temperatures are expected to be near to below average across central and western Canada. Above average precipitation is forecast from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick through Quebec, Ontario, the Northwest Territories, and the southern Yukon. Near to below average precipitation looks likely throughout much of central and western Canada. COMPOSTING FOR BEGINNERS Composting has many benefits and is a great way to reduce food waste and give your garden some extra love. What is compost? Compost is a mixture of ingredients used as plant fertilizer and to improve soil’s physical, chemical, and biological properties. It is commonly prepared by decomposing plant and food waste, recycling organic materials, and manure. In simpler terms, it is old organic waste that is good for soil. How is it sustainable? Composting has a lot of benefits. About 8% of greenhouse gas emissions come from wasted food. Composting food waste reduces pressures on landfills, thus reducing the amount of methane (a greenhouse gas 34 times stronger than CO2). Compost also retains a large volume of water which helps prevent erosion and reduce runoff. An additional benefit is that it will make your garden grow more than ever.
