Easter Egg Hunt Checklist

Up the challenge of an Egg Hunt by adding elements of a scavenger hunt into the mix! This one asks kids to find eggs in five different colors, three backyard flowers, different kinds of outdoor creatures and more in addition to finding their eggs and basket.

Hoppin' Easter Egg Hunt

Part-egg hunt, part-party game, this hunting variation will have everyone laughing. Instead of candy, this activity fills plastic eggs with funny little instructions like "moo like a cow" or "jump on one leg." Kids have to complete the activity before moving on to the next egg and finding the next challenge.

Balloon Landmarks

If there are toddlers or other very-little hunters in the mix, you can give them a not-so-subtle "hint" about the location of their eggs by tying helium balloons to them. According to Chris from Celebrations at Home, this method also means that parents don't have to work too hard to coax toddlers into looking for the eggs they're naturally drawn to the balloons and will head right for them!

Lego Eggs

This idea is for all the LEGO builders out there: Take a new LEGO set and divide all the pieces between different eggs. After they're done finding all the pieces, they can put their new set together (while you sit and drink coffee).

Golden Ticket Egg

Coming on the heels of Wonka, who wouldn't be excited to find a little extra magic in one of the eggs? This year, make a special "golden ticket" and hide it in one of the eggs, and then let the lucky kid who finds it trade it in for a bigger Easter prize.

Ball Pit Challenge

If you don't want to set kids loose around the house or backyard, you can always give them a needle-in-a-haystack type of hunt if you have a ball pit or kiddie pool. They'll have a heck of a time trying to separate the regular ball-pit balls from the plastic easter eggs.

Easter Egg Hunt Riddles

Take their hunt to the next level by making them follow a series of clues to find their Easter basket. The Easter bunny can deliver the first clue, and then they have decipher it to find the next one and so on until they get their big prize.

Easter Egg Counting Hunt

Reinforce those early-math skills with this Easter-themed counting activity. When they're done finding all the eggs, kids can match the colors to this worksheet and count them to make sure they've gotten them all.

Puzzle Piece Egg Hunt

If you take a puzzle and hide the pieces in different eggs, you'll have a ready-made activity for when the hunt is over. You can give them a puzzle featuring their favorite characters, or buy a blank puzzle and write a fun Easter message or a clue to where their basket is hidden.

Character Egg Hunt

Printable tattoo paper makes it easy to transfer over their favorite characters onto Easter eggs. Challenge kids to find a complete set of characters all the Sing performers, or all the pups in the PAW Patrol for example or you can even transfer over words and make a clue to where their basket can be found.

Paper Handprint Bunnies | Easy Easter Craft Using Construction Paper

These handprint bunnies are so simple to make and they are SO CUTE! You can make this bunny craft using construction paper, coloured printer paper, or even plain white paper if you’re in a pinch.

Supplies

• Construction Paper

• Pink Marker

• Black Gel Pen and or a pencil

• Scissors

Instructions

 Start by tracing a handprint – BUT you have to make the handprint a little fatter than you normally would. If you trace tightly around the fingers, the ears and arms will be super skinny. Maybe not quite as fat as what I’m showing in the photo below, but definitely fatter than the fingers really are. You can watch how I traced the handprint in the video above.

 Cut out the handprint. Make sure you have a V at the bottom between each finger (rather than

Use a vinegar and water solution in a microwave safe bowl to steam clean your microwave or you can purchase an Angry Mama which will conveniently help steam away hardened food and other microwave junkinseconds.

a curve).

 This next part is optional, but it really helps make the bunny more proportional. Cut a small slit beside the baby finger. You want the bottom of the cut to line up with the bottom of the space beside the thumb.

 Once you cut the slit, the baby finger will look a bit crooked. So feel free to trim that baby finger a little to fix the shape.

 Next, you can fold down the baby finger towards the center to make one of the bunny arms.

 Then fold down the thumb towards the center for the other bunny arm. I like to fold them so the two hands “touch” in the middle.

 Cut off the middle finger so you’re left with two finger “bunny ears”.

 Use a pink marker, pen or pencil crayon to draw the pink parts of the ears. Then draw an oval for the rabbit’s nose.

 Using a black gel pen, regular pen or marker, draw the rest of the face – eyes, whiskers and mouth. (See below for a few different face options).

 Finally draw two little paws at the bottom of the handprint to make the bunny’s feet.

 Your paper bunny is complete!

TAURUS (Apr. 21-May 20)

Activities with friends or in any situation that involves you with a group of people could get busier than you anticipate. You could get annoyed with somebody who wants to take the lead or assume authority. It might make you realise where you can easily be left with a lot of the work if you just go along with these things.

LEO (July 23-August 22)

You can become busier than ever over the next 6 months when it comes to involvement with other people. This could entail a lot of running around but it might also be more on the information or communication sides of things. It can be difficult to know where somebody else is coming from between now and May.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This would be a good time to May to start working on any future goals you have been formulating since mid February. This might also be a time where you will get a better idea of the commitment involved. Just how much it might cut into the time you like to have available to relax, could certainly begin to get your attention.

VIRGO (August 23-Sept.22)

SCORPIO (Oct.23-Nov21)

The more effort you have put into getting some sort of order in place since mid February, the greater will be the pleasure you experience from that up to May. You can probably relax a bit but might need to be careful of being led astray by others who may not be approaching things seriously. It is better to stay on the practical path.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.18)

There has been the opportunity to put new things in place that suit you personally since mid February. You could now become aware of what this could open up to in the future –the next 6 months can be important. Up to May, you need to be mindful of your finances. There can be the temptation to spend on impulse.

Others could place many expectations upon you from now to May in a manner that will make you feel guilty if you do not comply. Some of this could have started from mid February but now is the time to stand up and fight for whatever you consider is a fair thing. Don’t be put off because it is hard to work out what somebody else really thinks.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov.22-Dec.21)

You need to put your energies into getting a good structure in place up to May. If things need to be done at home, leave them no longer. Family matters could come up as well, especially where there are differences of opinion. This could shine a light on things important to you of which you need to be highly mentally determined.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Mars has moved into your sign, where it will remain until the 1st May. This should lift your energy level as well as your self confidence. Since mid February it may have been difficult to push yourself but now that should be a different matter. The only thing you have to watch is doing things on impulse. Much can be accomplished.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Many things can come to light, particularly with home and family, over the next 6 months. Endings and new beginnings can be part of the mix. You have come out of a challenging time when it comes to others that has been in effect since mid February. Up to May focus on future possibilities that could eventuallybe pursued.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct.22)

The Lunar Eclipse this week occurs in your sign. This can result in all sorts of personal recognition or generate situations where you are seen. This can be the case for the next 6 months. It could also encourage you to transform things about yourself or matters that involve you, so that you can gain greater pleasure from life.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.19)

Don’t enter into any agreements too quickly up to May, without giving yourself time to think about the commitments attached and just how much this can increase your levels of responsibility. There will be invitations and social activity in the mix as well. Though enjoyable, you could find this will interrupt more practical plans.

ARIES (March 21-April 20)

Something could become very obvious where somebody else is concerned, which could be surprising. This is not a time to react quickly. You have moved into a cycle until May where you need to sit back and contemplate before you move forward with anything. This situation may get you to question what is important in life.

How to Improve Garden Soil With Amendments

The best time to amend garden soil is when you're first establishing a garden bed. In an existing garden, soil amendments typically are an ongoing task, even if it's as simple as digging in some compost prior to each year's plantings.1 If your plants are growing well, there's usually no need to touch the soil. But if there's room for improvement, it's probably time to learn more about your soil and take action.

1. Evaluate Your Soil

The only definitive way to know your soil quality is to have it tested. Your local Cooperative Extension Service likely provides this service for a nominal fee. Many nurseries also test soil. The soil report you receive will give you a wealth of information on your soil's texture, pH, and nutritional composition. It will even offer recommendations on what amendments to use, and in what quantities, to correct any deficiencies.

You can make a guesstimate of your soil quality by looking at your plants' health. If they are thriving, don’t fix what isn’t broken. But if your plants are yellowing or otherwise looking sickly, it could be worth testing your soil. It's best not to guess when it comes to amending your soil because it's difficult to identify exactly what it needs. For example, what appears to be a nutritional deficiency calling for fertilizer might turn out to be a pH issue.

2. Adjust the Soil pH

Soil pH is critical because plants can't properly take up nutrients unless the acid/alkaline levels are in their ideal range. If a soil test shows your pH is off, you will get a recommendation to add either lime to raise the pH or sulfur to lower it. In an existing garden, this should be done in stages, so you don't shock the plants.

It's generally recommended that you don't add more than 5 pounds of lime or sulfur per 100 square feet of the existing garden. If you're creating a new garden, go ahead and add the whole recommended amount.

Rake the lime or sulfur over the garden, and then dig it in thoroughly with a shovel or garden tiller. Check the soil pH every couple of years, as the sulfur or lime will get consumed and need to be replenished.

Adjust the Soil Texture With Organic Material

Proper soil texture is essential to allow roots to take up moisture and air. Dense, clay-type soils can remain too moist, causing roots to drown, while sandy soils can drain too quickly for roots to absorb moisture.

The best way to improve soil texture is by adding organic material, such as compost or peat moss. Decaying organic matter helps sandy soil by retaining water that would otherwise drain away. And it corrects clay soil by making it looser, so air, water, and roots all can penetrate. Plus, in all soils it encourages beneficial microbial activity and provides nutritional benefits.

Common forms of organic material to amend garden soil include:

• Compost: Compost makes an excellent amendment, and it's free if you're composting your garden waste and kitchen scraps.

• Manure: You often can obtain manure from local farms and stables. It should be composted until it turns dark, crumbly, and odorless. Besides the smell, fresh manure has too much ammonia and can burn your plants.

• Peat moss: Peat moss is cheap and works well to loosen soil. It's also very dusty, so wet it first to make it easier to work with.

• Grass clippings: You can work grass clippings and other plant debris directly into a garden bed to decompose slowly. Be sure whatever you put down is free of seeds and hasn't been treated with pesticides or herbicides.

• Cover crops: Also known as green manure, cover crops are grown on unused soil with the intent of tilling them in and

Easter baskets have special symbolism.

The woven treat containers represent birds' nests and new life, especially when filled to the brim with eggs. Plus, they're a pretty utilitarian way to gather those goodies on your Easter egg hunt.

There's a reason you probably eat ham for Easter dinner.

Historically, most early Easter celebrants would have eaten lamb for this special occasion since the holiday has its roots in Jewish Passover. But these days, many American Easter dinners now feature ham instead, because of the timing of the holiday. Years ago, hams cured over the winter months would have been ready to serve in the early spring.

Easter lilies are a relatively new tradition.

These beautiful blooms first originated in Japan and arrived in England in the late 18th century. The United States only caught onto the trend after World War I. The transition from dormant bulbs to delicate flowers brings to mind hope and rebirth, two important themes of the Easter celebration.

Easter eggs have medieval origins.

Think Easter egg hunts are a strange tradition? Listen to this medieval game children's game: A priest would give one of the choir boys a hard boiled egg, and the boys would pass it amongst themselves until the clock struck midnight, when whoever was holding it got to eat it. We hope they at least got some salt and pepper to go with it.

Easter clothes used to be considered good luck.

Old superstition held that if you wore new clothes on Easter, you would have good luck for the rest of the year. In fact, it was so widely believed that upperclass New Yorkers would literally strut their stuff coming out of attending Easter mass at well-heeled midtown churches. This tradition become the basis of the modern, and decidedly less elitist, Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival in New York.

Easter eggs date back way before Easter.

There's evidence showing that Easter eggs originated from Medieval Europe and Christians may not have actually been the ones to start the tradition of giving eggs. They're a symbol of fertility and rebirth in many cultures around the world.

The holiday was named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre.

Scholars believe that Easter was named after a festival celebrating Eostre and the coming of spring. Her sacred symbols are thought to have been the hare and the egg, which is why they fetaure prominently in Easter symbolism too.

letting them decompose. The roots keep the soil loose, and the plants suppress weeds. Cover crops from the legume family, such as clover and vetch, also add nitrogen to the soil. Cover crops are most often used for vegetable garden sites.

Tip

An easy test for soil texture is to make a ball of damp garden soil. If it breaks apart easily when you tap it, it's sandy soil. If you can press it between your thumb and finger and make a ribbon, it's clay.

Add Nutrients Based on Soil Test

Many garden soils offer perfectly good nutrition, especially if they contain lots of organic material. But if a soil test or poor plant health indicates the need for more nutrients, you’ll have the choice between natural organic products or synthetic fertilizers.

Synthetic fertilizer has some pluses. It's usually cheaper than organic fertilizer, and it acts more quickly. However, it doesn't actually amend the soil; it just feeds the plants. And in some cases it might damage the soil with its high salt content. Meanwhile, organic fertilizers release their nutrients over a period of time. You won't get an instant fix as you do with synthetic fertilizers. But you will get a longer, sustained feeding.

Fertilizers vary in nutrients. A complete fertilizer contains all three primary nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Plants have different nutritional needs, but in most cases a complete fertilizer will be the type to use. A soil test can make more specific recommendations on the fertilizer type and quantity. Follow label directions for the fertilizer application. Some granular forms are mixed into the soil, while water-soluble fertilizers are applied with a sprayer or watering can.
