When does Spring Start?
When is the first day of spring? In 2024, the official first day of spring is Tuesday, March 19. This date marks the vernal equinox. Why does spring start on the 19th of this year? Learn more.
When Is the First Day of Spring 2024?
In 2024, the March equinox happens on March 19 at 11:06 P.M. EDT. This falls on a Tuesday and is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere.
If you thought that the spring equinox only ever occurred on March 21, you may be dating yourself. The civil calendar date of the equinox continues to shift every year.

What Is the Spring Equinox?
In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox across the globe) occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. It’s called the “celestial” equator because it’s an imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator. Imagine standing on the equator; the Sun would pass directly overhead on its

way north.
On the March equinox, the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere receive roughly equal amounts of sunlight; neither hemisphere is tilted more toward or away from the Sun than the other.
Although in most locations (the North Pole and Equator being exceptions), the amount of daylight had been increasing each day after the winter solstice, after the spring equinox, many places will experience more daylight than darkness in each 24hour day. The amount of daylight each day will continue to increase until the summer solstice in June, during which the longest period of daylight occurs.
Here’s an interesting fact: Equinoxes are the only two times yearly that the Sun rises due east and sets due west for all of us on Earth! While the Sun passes overhead, the tilt of the Earth is zero relative to the Sun, which means that the Earth’s axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun. (Note, however, that the Earth never orbits upright but is always tilted on its axis by about 23.5 degrees.)

What Does “Equinox” Mean?
The word equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night” aequus (equal) and nox (night). On the equinox, the length of day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world.

A: Well, both. The answer depends on your definition of “spring.” Both dates are accurate; they’re just from different perspectives. We’ll explain
Astronomically speaking, the first day of spring is marked by the spring equinox, which falls on March 19, 20, or 21 every year. The equinox happens at the exact moment worldwide, although our clock times reflect a different time zone. And, as mentioned above, this date only signals spring’s beginning in the Northern Hemisphere; it announces fall’s arrival in the Southern Hemisphere. Interestingly, due to time zone differences, there hasn’t been a March 21 equinox in mainland U.S. during the entire 21st century! We won’t see a March 21 equinox again until 2101. Meteorologically speaking, the official first day of spring is March 1 (and the last is May 31). Weather scientists divide the year into quarters to make it easier to compare seasonal and monthly statistics from one year to the next. The meteorological seasons are based on annual temperature cycles rather than on the position of Earth in relation to the Sun, and they more closely follow the Gregorian calendar. Using the dates of the astronomical equinoxes and solstices for the seasons would present a statistical problem, as these dates can vary slightly each year.
Q: Are Day and Night Equal on the Equinox?
A: Quite close! In reality, day and night are not exactly equal on the equinox for two reasons: First, daytime begins the moment any part of the Sun appears over the horizon and is not finished until the last part of the Sun disappears below the horizon. If the Sun were to shrink to a starlike point and we lived in a world without air, the spring and fall equinoxes would truly have equal nights.

Flu Bomb Recipe
Ingredients:
• ½ inch of fresh turmeric, peeled, thinly sliced
• ¾ inch fresh ginger, peeled, thinly sliced
• The juice from one lemon
• 1 clove garlic, minced do this first so it can sit for 15 minutes

"TAFFY" is a 6-7 months old neutered tabby, on the shy side, but coming out of his shell in his fosterhome. Taffy is looking for his forever home after his brother was adopted. 250-692-7476

• 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar with the mother
• 1 tsp or to taste raw organic honey
• A few cracks of black pepper
• 1 cup of filtered water
Directions:
Place the turmeric and ginger in a saucepan with the water. Bring to a boil and then turn off the heat and let it steep for 10 minutes. Continue to cool until just warm. Once cool, strain the ginger and turmeric from the water, into a cup. Add all the other ingredients and stir until the honey dissolves. Enjoy! Tips: Stir while drinking to keep the garlic from settling to the bottom. It’s important to let the garlic sit for 10 - 15 minutes before adding to heat, after you either chop it or mince it. Letting the garlic sit before adding to heat allows the beneficial enzymes to activate. Once you add it to heat, the heat deactivates the enzymes. To keep the vitamin C intact, add the lemon juice only after the tea has cooled. The same goes for the honey as the heat will destroy all the nutritional benefits. Disclaimer: This is NOT medical advice. This is stating that this recipe is made with healthy ingredients that may make you feel better if you come down with an illness.

TAURUS (Apr. 21-May 20)

New things might suddenly become important, which might be a bit of a surprise, even to you. Taking a balanced approach, where you might also need to make some adjustments or compromises will not be so challenging up to early April. This could also be a time where changes take place involving a group of people or friends as well.
LEO (July 23-August 22)
A new level of dependence that you didn’t see coming could be expected of you. This does not necessarily need to continue into the long term future but may not give you a lot of choice up to mid May. In this period you will need to work out what is reasonable and what they perhaps need to learn to manage. This will be up to you.

SCORPIO (Oct.23-Nov21)
If you have been working well at putting things in place of late you can now afford to relax and bit more and enjoy yourself to early April. You cannot afford to take your mind off usual routines that need to be seen to though. You might also realise during April that there could be more efficient ways to handle matters, which could include health habits.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.18)
You will be highly determined mentally this week but need to leave some flexibility with any decisions you feel need to be made. Opportunity could certainly exist but there will be a lot of change between now and mid May. Something new can come up financially right now. A balanced approach to this up to early April can result in some sort of stability.
GEMINI (May
21-June 20)

A sudden realisation that either something might be better dropped you were planning for the future or it becomes obvious matters won’t go that way. There is no urgency when it comes to alternative decisions. You need to work out, between now and mid May, what might be a better alternative. Expect to change your mind a bit.
VIRGO (August 23-Sept.22)
A very pleasant period with other people will be in play to early April. You might be encouraged to try something out of the ordinary and surprisingly get a taste for it in the future. Don’t worry too much for the moment, about anybody who wants to be mysterious. There will be plenty of time to work that out later, so just enjoy yourself.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov.22-Dec.21)

You will have the opportunity to early April to get something new in place that you have perhaps been thinking about or finding the right information on, of late. This could include home or family matters. The aim here will be to establish something more balanced that you find harmonious. You could discover strength of mind you didn’t realise you were capable of.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
Someone who has been a bit of a mystery could now decide to take a more open approach to early April. This can come just when you have made up your mind to look to new directions in the future. There will be much to think about from now to mid May when it comes to mentally committing in some way. Don’trushdecisions.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct.22)
The time has come to wind up social activity to some extent and focus on any jobs that might have been put to one side. You could decide to put some new routines in place between now and early April. Don’t rely too much on the decisions that other people might need to make up to late April. By mid May there can be more certainty.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.19)
There could be a lot to think about, from now to mid May, when it comes to family or the way in which you want to structure things in your life. You might come up with some new ideas right now that seem balanced and feasible but be prepared to change your mind, perhaps as matters alter during April. Patience of mind will see you through.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
The New Moon has just occurred in your sign providing you with the opportunity to take new directions on a personal level or to perhaps establish a new attitude with any situation you need to deal with. Venus will be in your sign until the 5th April, bringing with it a greater sense of balance or peace or the ability to create this, perhaps after feeling held back.

ARIES (March 21-April 20)
Mercury, the planet of thought and communication has moved into your sign where it will remain for an exceptionally long time – up to 16th May. This will give you plenty to think about and might encourage you to want to make decisions quickly. However, be prepared to change your mind during April or for things to change, so have some patience.

Vietnamese Spring Rolls Recipe

Ingredients:

►1 lb Large Shrimp (21 -25 count), peeled and deveined (keep the shells)
►3 oz Vermicelli Rice Noodles
►1/2 Butter Lettuce (15 leaves)
►2 Carrots, peeled and julienned
►1/2 English Cucumber julienned (or 3 small cucumbers)
►1 cup Cilantro sprigs
►15 Round Rice Paper Sheets (8.5” diameter)
How to Make Spring Rolls:
Boil Shrimp according to our boiled shrimp recipe then immediately cool in ice water. Once boiled and cooled, drain and cut shrimp in half lengthwise.
Cook noodles according to package instructions until softened (do not overcook)

then drain in a colander and rinse with cold water. Let noodles drain in a colander until ready to assemble. You can also fill a saucepan with water and bring it to a boil, add the noodles, turn off the heat and let them sit in hot water for 5-7 minutes.
Prep veggies – julienne cucumbers and carrots, remove stiff stems on lettuce leaves, coarsely chop cilantro,
Assemble spring rolls One at a Time. Fill a shallow round bowl (wider than your wrappers) with very warm/hot water. Submerge spring roll wrapper for about 10-15 seconds or until softened(depending on the temperature of your water). Place wet spring roll wrapper on a clean and lightly wet cutting board.
Add veggies on one half in this order: lettuce, a generous pinch of noodles, carrots, cucumber, cilantro sprigs.
Add shrimp on the second half, placing the shrimp cut-side up.
Tightly roll up the lettuce side first, tuck in the sides then roll over the shrimp so shrimp are visible on the outside.
To serve – Transfer finished rolls to a serving platter and keep finished spring rolls covered with a damp kitchen towel so they do not dry out. For a prettier presentation, serve cut in half on the diagonal.

As always, Lodge set up / clean up, and course takedown are included in the sign up form too.
