Local News

Manchester’s ‘heart of house’ Venus announced its closure in early January. After 20 years on the scene the club, which was formerly known as Club V, closed its doors for good on NYE joining Sankeys in the great nightclub in the sky. Venus management attribute its demise to changes to the city’s nightlife, including later opening hours for bars and the rise of festivals.

Auction house to become new music venue! Promoters Now Wave will give the former auction house a new lease of life as a live music venue, complete with bar, kitchen, two stages and a roof terrace. The Charles Street venue is expected to open later this year.

Sounds Of The City returns to Castlefield Bowl this summer with dates locked in with Nile Rogers & Chic, Shed Seven, Haçienda Classiçal, Levellers, Rag’N’Bone Man, and Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott. Tickets are on sale now.

Shhhhh.... Manchester Central Library to host silent disco. Listen up - this is fact, not fiction. DJ John Ryan will be working his way through volumes of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s hits in the iconic grade II* listed building. Hosted by We Built This City, the event will take place on the 16th Feb from 8pm til midnight, with tickets at £5 a pop.

smashed onto the scene last year with their roaring debut single ‘Regeneration’, released on Cult Records - run by none other than The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas. Name-dropping ‘90s influences such as Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine and The Ramones, expect a fast-paced set searing through a spectrum of floaty bubble pop numbers through to relentless, riff-heavy bangers.

has cemented his status as a heavyweight in the UK’s jazz scene over the last 12 months, delivering a contemporary blend of bebop and soul. Followed by hip-hop inspired jazz-funk outfit Glowrogues, who compare their vibe to the likes of The Cinematic Orchestra, Snarky Puppy and the Robert Glasper Experiment, this evening might just prove beyond doubt that jazz is cool. 15.02.18

Four Tet Old Granada Studios £20ADV | 7pm Following the release of the longanticipated album ‘New Energy’ last year, main-man Kieran Hebden is filling the former home of Coronation Street in a one-off opportunity to experience the alt-electronic ambassador in this iconic Manchester venue. After nearly two decades dominating the scene with an intelligently curated back catalogue ranging from ethereal electronia to brutalist beatwork, it’s difficult to describe Four Tet without being reductive just go.

Lewis Capaldi Club Academy £12ADV | 7:30pm With a tortured and soulful sound well beyond his years, we get the feeling “karaoke bar to Spotify star” Lewis Capaldi could be on the cusp of something huge. Shortlisted for the BBC’s Sound of 2018, the Scottish songwriter is equally no stranger to filling venues with his haunting, earthy vocals after touring in 2017 with Rag’n’Bone man. Catch him in these intimate venues before the inevitable mainstream sweeps him on to bigger things. Visit Stereoboard.com to compare and buy thousands of tickets from their panel of over 30 ticket sellers.

If 60 million Spotify streams and a name-check by Taylor Swift are anything to go by, we should be paying Dermot Kennedy a lot more attention. This Dubliner’s soulful, weathered vocals run through stuttering, R&B-inspired pop rhythms in organic-electronic fusion and emotion-laced lyrics. Obvious comparisons to Bon Iver, James Blake, and James Vincent McMorrow aside, the end result is impossible to ignore and difficult to stand still to.

$uicideboy$ O2 Ritz | £20ADV | 6:30pm Hailing from New Orleans, this high-energy “horrorcore” hip-hop duo are undoubtedly one of the fastest growing outfits in the scene right now. Combining breakneck bars, synth drops and sludgy social commentary with an on-stage performance featuring signature robot zombie dance moves, $uicideboy$ turn aggression into something altogether more articulate.

hyperactive, high-energy live show, expect things to get a little intense in this intimate venue. The band’s first headline tour coincides with something of a rebrand for the rambunctious group as Indoor Pets - after causing controversy with an ill-thought-out prior identity - are “out to prove the sceptics wrong”. Beach-punk duo Palm Beach support. 21.02.18

Baxter Dury Gorilla | £10ADV | 7:30pm After the single ‘Miami’ proved to be firm 6 Music favourite of 2017, Baxter Dury’s melancholic, metronomic sound seems familiar even if you’re not sure where you heard it before. And that’s got nothing to do with his famous father. Touring his so-called “adult break-up record” ‘Prince Of Tears’, expect poignant psychedeliatinged sentimentality over anarchic rock’n’roll. Picked up by mainstream media for capturing a “very modern experience of masculinity”, Dury has carved his own authentic musical path that you could do worse than to follow.

Moose Blood Manchester Academy £15ADV | 7pm Making their debut four years ago with the album ‘I’ll Keep You in Mind, From Time to Time’, these UK alt-rockers made an obvious appeal to an unrelenting emo generation. After going through a metamorphosis of sorts with the much poppier ‘Blush’ in 2016, the band’s latest release, ‘It’s Too Much’, hints toward another evolution with a tighter sound and cleaned up vocals - it’s like pop-punk, if poppunk grew up.

From professional footballer to emerging singer-songwriter, at 22 years of age, Tom Grennan is living the life that most young lads can only dream of.

We caught up with Tom in the picturesque town of Groningen, fresh from his second set at European showcase festival Eurosonic Nooderslag to chat about his journey so far, his thoughts on the festival, and what’s next on the cards.

Casting urban shadows on his polished soul-pop, Grennan is the product of a man brought up on a delightful diet of Ray Charles, Skepta, Amy Winehouse, Kano, Elvis, and Wiley. A concoction which unconventionally creates music of mass appeal, engaging with audiences of all ages.

“My journey right now has been pretty crazy, man. It’s a journey that I thought I would never be on, but everything is so positive and the energy around the whole project, like meeting fans and going to different countries, and yeah the journey has been wicked mate.”

On the verge of releasing his debut album, having collaborated with the likes of Chase & Status and Bugzy Malone, set to embark on a sold-out UK tour, and with his name popping up on festival line-ups nationwide, the Bedford boy is at an exciting yet hectic point in his career.

Attended by bookers, agents, press, and record labels, the industry showcase festival is set to further propel Tom’s career to new heights. Tom explained, “Like you say [the city] is beautiful, it is beautiful man but Eurosonic puts you on a platform to be seen

by a load of promoters and a load of people from different countries, yeah man I think it’s good for all bands and all artists.” In a town famed for its many venues, Tom performed to a packed out crowd at the Groningen Forum. Upon asking about how his set went at the festival, Tom said: “Pretty Shit! [Laughs] Naw, it was good man but like we hadn’t rehearsed as a band since before Christmas, so it was rusty on my behalf and obviously, I was jetlagged but I can’t complain. It was a big show and like you say people were squeezing in, so it was cool man.”

Performing tracks from his soon-to-be-released debut album ‘Lighting Matches’, out 18th May, Grennan crammed the best of his expanding catalogue into the 40-minute allocated time-slot. Noticing that the guitarist in his band had urged him to perform another song, despite running over his

allotted slot, we asked Tom what happened when he got off-stage. “Yeah we got into trouble ‘cause the whole time set of that thing was so crazy as we had to get off stage in 15 minutes, there was a 15 minute change over and then the guy was shouting ‘one more song, one more song’, and I said okay we have to do one more song, and like you say my guitarist was like ‘fuck that, let’s do two more’, so I was like ‘fuck that, let’s do two’.”

Collaborating with musicians of the zeitgeist is just one element which has bought Grennan’s musical career together, however, his idols haven’t always been of the musical variety. “As influences go I was never like a music head being young, so a lot of my influencers were footballers.”

“Fuck that, let’s do two more!”

Having flown in straight from L.A. to Holland for the festival, we were As a teenager, intrigued to find Tom was on a out what he’d promising path Tom Grennan been doing out on the football there. A jet-lagged field, playing for Tom explained, “I’ve just signed Luton Town, Northampton Town, an American record deal, which Aston Villa and Stevenage, but I’m buzzing about and I’ve been what - aside from an impromptu doing a bit of writing over there and rendition of The Kooks ‘Seaside’ yeah feeling the vibe of January.” - kicked off his change in career? “Alcohol, girls [laughs] naw I’m Back in 2016, Grennan’s signature joking. I think I found a different raspy vocals featured on Chase road in life. I felt like music and & Status single ‘All Goes Wrong’. singing was a release for me, “They heard one of my songs from and an escape route. So yeah, my publishers and I just went and I suppose that’s why I picked met them and it was mad as I was it up and I wasn’t that good at a fan of them anyway. Went into football in the end and I’ve tried the studio and we kinda kicked to master my craft in this and 21

I’m still trying to master it but I think I’m just better at this.”

never want to drink no more and then the next day you do, you drink loads more. But it came from there really and then I wrote it with a guy called Jonny Lattimer and a guy called Adj and Fraser T Smith produced it up and made it to this epic song.”

Now in a chance nod to his former football career ‘Found what I’ve been looking For’ has been used as the title music to the Sky Sports Premier League coverage. “It’s crazy! I watch a lot of football, and I forget that it’s on, so when I’m in the pub with my mates and stuff like that I’m like ‘Fuck, oh yeah that’s my song’ but again it’s an honour to be picked by the Premier League and Sky, yeah man I love it!”

Tom will be showcasing his new album on UK stages this March, swinging by Manchester’s O2 Ritz on the 22nd. Asking how he felt when he learned of the tour’s sold-out status Tom said, “Amazing! That’s what my goal was to be like, I don’t ever want to tour without it ever been soldout, so I’m setting myself targets. When I got the news I was buzzing man. I just know that every venue is going to go off.”

Padding out his thunderously raw yet chirpy, hook-heavy singles with a full-length debut, Tom is set to drop ‘Lighting Matches’ with the same confident and charismatic vibe which he exudes on-stage. “From the album you can expect orchestras, brass, vocals and just pure epic-ness mate.”

Asking what fans can expect from the live shows, Tom enthused, “Expect the unexpected for one and also expect good lively Tom Grennan. I’m going to put on a good show and I want people to leave the venue saying I want to see him again. So yeah, expect the unexpected.”

Tom wrote his latest single release, ’Sober’, the morning after a booze-filled night out. Released in the height of dry January, the soul-popper explained, “‘Sober’ came from like a hungover, hungover day. You know one of those days where you are like I

So what’s next for the talented Tom? “Album, tour and just try and take over the world mate.” 22

It’s that time of year again, the time when your mind wants to escape the wet winter weather and look forward to that all-important summer festival season. Dreaming about the acts you’ll see – some may already be known to you but your new favourite band may be resting just under your radar. Never fear, as we headed to European showcase festival Eurosonic Noorderslag to check out some of the most hotlytipped artists for 2018 and tell you about them first.

Nilüfer Yanya :

Listen: ‘Keep On Calling’ // ‘Baby Luv’ Live: 20.05.18 | The Deaf Institute | £8.50ADV | 7:30pm FFO: Florence + The Machine // Bat For Lashes

This Londoner’s smoldering vocals and don’t-give-a-fuck lyrics are both refreshing and captivating. Bought up on a diet of Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley and Pixies, Yanya’s influences are far reaching, creating a mille-feuille of minimalist beats layered up with stomach twinging guitar melodies, urban nuances, and jazz laden sax.

Yungblud

Listen: ‘I Love You, Will You Marry Me’ Live: 05.05.18 | Live At Leeds | FRM£25 | 12pm FFO: Arctic Monkeys // Sleaford Mods

Jade Bird

Tom Walker :

Listen: ‘Leave A Light On’ Live: 28.03.18 | Gorilla | £11.50ADV | 7pm

FFO: Ed Sheeran // Maverick Sabre Undeniably talented, and totally comforting, Tom Walker is like eating a tub of Ben and Jerry’s in bed when you’re going through a break up. However, his already budding catalogue of ‘Leave A Light On’ remixes – by the likes of AlunaGeorge, Dasco and Luca Schreiner – are sure to get you bouncing out of bed and back out on the town.

Iguana Death Cult

Listen: ‘Pyramids’ FFO: Thee Oh Sees' // King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard // The Black Lips

Astroid Boys

Listen: ‘Dusted’ Live: 11.03.18 | Rebellion | £12ADV | 7pm FFO: Hollywood Undead // Linkin Park

The playful pocket rocket has a confident stage presence, which far surpasses her 21 years, mixing up slow tracks with punchy Scandi-pop bangers.

27

Youngr :

Listen: ‘Ooh Lordy’ // ‘Out Of My System’ Live: 28.02.18 | The Deaf Institute | £7ADV | 7pm FFO: Porta Robinson // The Temper Trap // Prince

Youngr, AKA Dario Darnel, is a musical maverick, effortlessly switching between vocals, guitars, keys, percussion, drum machines, and looping them all along the way. Dancy, fun, feel good, and euphoric at times, Youngr will prove an addictive addition to your summer soundtrack.

Stereo Honey

Listen: ‘The Bay’ Live: 05.05.18 | Live At Leeds | FRM£25 | 12pm FFO: Radiohead // The Boxer Rebellion

Jeangu Macrooy

Watching Superorganism live is like downing a 2-litre bottle of Coke, eating a shit load of blue Smarties, on a revolving dance floor, while looking through a kaleidoscope. Eclectic, electronic, and experimental, the 8-piece who met in London, really are ‘Something For Your Mind’. Keep your eyes peeled for their debut album, which drops on the 2nd March. 28

Pale Waves :

Listen: ‘Television Romance’ Live: 06.03.18 | Gorilla | £8ADV | 7pm FFO: Fickle Friends // The Japanese House

Bad Sounds :

Listen: ‘Wages’ FFO: The Magic Gang // Circa Waves Influenced by the likes of Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Beastie Boys, De La Soul, and Tribe Called Quest, Bad Sounds serve up a brew of optimistic pop infused with hip-hop. The brother duo, who are backed by a live band on stage, fill the floor with ecstatic sweaty bodies whenever they perform live.

HMLTD :

Listen: ‘To The Door’ Live: 14.02.18 | The White Hotel, Salford | £10ADV | 8pm FFO: Idles // Girl Band HMLTD (formally known as Happy Meal LTD until McDonalds lawyers kicked off!) offer a gripping brand of punk and glam rock. Tormented, theatrical and chaotic, the band’s live shows are ripping up all the rulebooks, immersing their audience into a dark world akin to that of the Rocky Horror Show. Expect eye-patches, burnt hair, sacrifices, fake blood and strobes a-plenty.

The Homesick : Listen: ‘The Best Part Of Being Young Is Falling In Love With Jesus’ // ‘Half Aryan’ FFO: Joy Division // New Order

Hailing from Holland, teenage post-punk trio The Homesick create a dispirited, deep-toned sound, which far exceeds their teenage years. If you’re a Joy Division fan, their debut LP ‘Youth Hunt’ will slot smoothly into your record collection.

Yonaka

Listen: ‘Wouldn’t Wanna Be Ya’ FFO: PINS // Deap Vally // Black Honey

Jacob Banks

Listen: ‘Chainsmoking’ Live: 26.03.18 | Gorilla | £15ADV | 7pm FFO: Kwabs // Sampha
