Due to unprecedented demand, the #SpiceUpLondon exhibition is going nationwide and its first stop-off is Manchester Central this coming August. Get ready to go all “zigazig ah” as you can expect to see thousands of items of memorabilia, alongside the iconic stage costumes of Britain’s biggest girl-band of all time.

Local promoters Now Wave have spent the last few months converting a former auction house on Charles Street into a two-stage live music venue. So far, plans for Manchester’s newest venue have been kept tightly under wraps - even its name is top secret.

pseudonym of L.A. songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Melina Duterte. Thanks to a catalogue of melodic bedroom-pop singles on Bandcamp and a pseudonym from the same Wu-Tang Names Generator that turned Donald Glover into Childish Gambino, Jay Som was signed in 2016 releasing her official debut, ‘Everybody Works’ last year. An accomplished songwriter, Jay Som’s live performance promises to bring another dimension to what is an already varied and vibrant, strong record from start to end.

Deaf Institute | £10ADV | 7pm

Misty’s Big Adventure are not like other groups. The eight-piece band from Birmingham, led by “not good looking frontman” Grandmaster Gareth mix pop, ska and jazz with indie, psychedelia, folk, punk and lounge. If you can imagine what that sounds like. Despite NME calling their single ‘Hey Man!’ “a bobbing turd in the toilet of music!”, whatever they do, it works. They’ve toured with the likes of The Zutons, The Magic Numbers, The Guillemots, Jeff Lewis, Kimya Dawson, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Dodgy, The Bluetones and 50 Foot Wave over their 22-year long career, as well as playing Bestival, End Of The Road and Green Man. Oh, and they have a dancing monster called Erotic Volvo.

One of the original members of rap crew Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah (AKA Tony Starks) has been distinguishing himself as a solo artist since 1995, with an ever-increasing career of collabs under his belt since. In lieu of commemorating the 25th anniversary of their debut album ‘Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’, the Wu-Tang Clan recently embarked on performing the entire legendary LP live, at festivals in Minnesota and Detroit - and now,

Essaie Pas

Despite being Mercury Prizenominated, the London-based Portico Quartet seem to enjoy being somewhat elusive. Fusing jazz, minimalism, electronic and ambient beats, the group have honed in on their own singular, cinematic sound over the course of four albums since their debut in 2007. Long gone are their days of busking on the South Bank; with latest offering, ‘Art In The Age Of Automation’, receiving generous acclaim, The Guardian likening their sound to Massive Attack and 808 State. Meanwhile, companion album ‘Untitled (AITAOA #2)’ bolsters their ambiguous offering.

Marie Davidson and Pierre Guerineau make up Essaie Pas, a Canadian duo hailing from Montréal, whose sound combines dark, minimal synth-pop, French pop, Italo-disco, and a certain element of horror movie soundtrack sampling. Spoken and sung by both Davidson and Guerineau, their lyrics revolve around themes such as loneliness, sexuality, and fantasy, designed to be listened to on long, late nights. Loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s dystopian sci-fi classic ‘A Scanner Darkly’, their second album, ‘New Path’, released in 2018, is as edgy, experimental and enchanting as you would expect. 12

rotating roster of collaborating musicians. A love of music spawned from childhood drum lessons and tempered by the turmoil of losing beloved family members is evident in his offkilter-pop output peppered with deeply personal lyrics that reflect on the darker side of human experience. His 12th album, ‘The Deconstruction’, featuring Koool G Murder and P-Boo, draws on his interest in electronic composition and, reflecting on a somewhat tumultuous career, is something of a return-to-form for the introspective indie-rocker.

Fusing a 35-piece orchestra with acid-house floor-fillers might not seem like an obvious recipe for success, but Haçienda Classical is exactly that. The classical-meetsclubland concept sees FAC 51’s original DJ partnership Graeme Park and Mike Pickering, alongside executive producer Peter Hook, reinterpret the seminal dance classics from the glory days of the Haçienda – with renowned chamber orchestra Manchester Camerata, and gospel choir, AMC. All that remains to be seen is whether Manchester will ever tire of that Blue Monday bassline. 03.07.18

Tom explains, “I don’t know when it’s going to be released but it’s going to be called ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ ‘cause I think right now is a crazy time to be alive in a good way and a bad, as we have achieved a lot as a human race but also sometimes, watching the telly, I think ‘what the fuck is going on?‘ So that is reflected in the album.”

“It’s all just gone at a crazy, crazy rate. I mean two years ago I did the festival circuit on my own in my 1.4 VW Fox with all my gear in the back and turned up to play on Friday morning at 11am and did everything on my own - no tour manager or anything - and now I’ve got a whole team of people and we’re going and selling out tours. Tom kicked off this year with a BBC Sound of 2018 nomination, “off the back of that we got a ton of festivals and the tour sold-out. It was such a cool thing to be on because if you look back at all the artists on that list over time a lot of them are doing very, very well these days. So it’s cool to be on that list alongside some amazing acts like Pale Waves, Sam Fender and there’s loads more wicked people on it, so I was buzzing when I found out.”

CTS TO Catch From the where to watch them to the allimportant why (if you don’t already know!) let us guide you through the must-see acts of this festival season. Go oldschool and circle them on your Clashfinder, or set a reminder in one of the festival’s new age apps, ‘cause you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss out!

Stormzy: UK: Wireless Festival Europe: Roskilde Festival (Denmark) // Sziget Festival (Hungary) // Lowlands (Netherlands) Thanks to Stormzy, there has never been a more exciting time for grime music. His debut album ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ was the first grime album to reach No. 1 in the UK Album Chart and earned him both BRIT and Ivor Novello Awards. It would be easy for Stormzy to get too big for his boots, however, he remains grounded, calling out Theresa May over Grenfell, penning words for charity singles and empowering a generation of millennials. We’ll see you in the crowd at Wireless. 26

Arctic Monkeys: UK: TRNSMT Festival Europe: Open’er Festival (Poland) // Rockwave Festival (Greece) // NOS Alive (Portugal) // Mad Cool Festival (Spain) // Rock Werchter (Belgium) With album number six in their arsenal and tickets all sold-out for their September shows, a festival may be your only chance to witness Arctic Monkeys in 2018. Expect cuts from their leisurely paced latest record ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’, mixed in with a selection of festival-sized bangers.

Dua Lipa: UK: Reading & Leeds Festival Europe: Warsaw Festival (Poland) // Roskilde Festival (Denmark) // Ruisrock (Finland) // Stavern Festivalen (Norway) // Mad Cool Festival (Spain) // Tomorrowland (Belgium) // Lollapalooza (France) // Sziget Festival (Hungary) // Pukkelpop (Belgium) // Lowlands (Netherlands) // Electric Picnic (Ireland) BRITs ‘British Breakthrough Act’ and glamour puss Dua Lipa may have released her debut album just last year, but she’s already become a radio regular, has bagged a stack of awards and boasts two tracks in the Top 10 most streamed songs of 2018 so far - ‘IDGAF’ and ‘New Rules’. She’s sure to get the crowd pumping at Reading & Leeds this summer. 27

The Gallaghers: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds: UK: Tramlines Festival // Electric Fields // Bingley Music Live Europe: Pinkpop (Netherlands) // Roma Summer Fest (Italy) // I-Days Festival (Spain) // Rock Werchter (Belgium) // Bilbao BBK Live (Spain) // Lollapalooza (France) // Festival Du Roi Arthur (France) Liam Gallagher: UK: TRNSMT Festival // Isle Of Wight Festival // Rize Festival // Belsonic Europe: I-Days Festival (Spain) // Main Square Festival (France) // Benicàssim (Spain) // Sziget Festival (Hungary) // Zürich Openair (Switzerland) // Lollapalooza (Germany) What discerning Manc wouldn’t want to see brothers and nemesis’s Noel and Liam at every available opportunity ever? Unfortunately, as ever, you won’t be able to witness the two brothers on the same stage in the same field at the same time. However, somewhat unusually, both brothers will be performing at the I-Days Festival in Milan on different dates, so if you’re a hardcore fan grab a ticket for that!

28

Superorganism: UK: Latitude Festival Europe: Provinssirock Festival (Finland) // Sirens Call (Luxembourg) // Europavox (France) // Les Eurockeennes (France) // Melt! Festival (Germany) // Øya Festival (Norway) // La Route Du Rock (France) If you can’t wait ‘til their October UK tour, you can get that trippy feeling that only Superorganism can bring at a selection of festivals this summer. Enjoy!

Blossoms: UK: Isle Of Wight Festival // All Points East // Tramlines Festival // TRNSMT Festival Europe: Sziget Festival (Hungary) // Rock For People (Czech Republic) // Pohoda Festival (Slovakia) Blossoms have just released their sophomore album ‘Cool Like You’ and if you haven’t managed to catch them at one of their 3 Manchester and Stockport shows recently, festival season is time to catch an eye (and ear)-ful.

Pale Waves: UK: Kendal Calling // Y Not Festival // Tramlines Festival // Community Festival // TRNSMT Festival // Barn On The Farm // Stanton Calling // Truck Festival // British Summer Time Festival // Reading & Leeds Festival Europe: Rock Werchter (Belgium) // Southside Festival (Germany) // Benicàssim (Spain) Looks like the only place you can’t catch this Manchester band this summer is well… Manchester. So break away from the city, pop on your Creepers and follow the sound of dream pop.

30

Years & Years: UK: Boardmasters // Rize Festival // Victorious Festival // Fusion Festival Europe: Pinkpop (Netherlands) // Lollapalooza (France) // Lollapalooza (Germany) // Positivus Festival (Lativa) // Ruisrock (Finland) // Kadetten (Norway) Ironically it seems like we’ve been waiting years and years for this synth-pop trio to release some new material - in fact, it has only been three! But finally the wait is over and their new album ‘Palo Santo’ will drop in July and we just can’t wait to hear it out in the fields!

sIGRID: UK: Reading & Leeds Festival // Somerset House Summer Series // TRNSMT Festival Europe: Roskilde Festival (Denmark) // Flow Festival (Finland) // Pstereo Festival (Norway) // Jugendfest (Norway) // Rock Werchter (Belgium) Whether it’s overheard in the Vic in Eastenders, in an advert, or on the radio, we can’t help but sing along to Sigrid’s Scandipop. As the BBC Sound Of 2018 winner, there will never be a better year to witness the rocket rocket in action. 31

Goat Girl: UK: Citadel // Larmer Tree Festival // Truck Festival // Deer Shed Festival // Green Man Festival The posters slapped up around Manchester might fool you into thinking that Goat Girl are some kind of 90’s throwback girl-band, but surprisingly these London ladies create sophisticated yet melancholic music. Laced with political narratives, their songs challenge the zeitgeist and may prove to be a thoughtprovoking addition to your festival picks.

Gengahr: UK: Barn On The Farm // Truck Festival // Stanton Calling // Tramlines Festival // Boardmasters // Victorious Festival Europe: Bilbao BBK Live (Spain) Gengahr stole our hearts with their delicate debut ‘A Dream Outside’ in 2015, and have come back with another elegant and arty long-player ‘Where Wildness Grows’. The spellbinding foursome will have you hooked from the moment they walk out on stage.
