A Room To Retreat To

Having a private, personal sanctuary is a must-have these days, especially if your household has more than one of you working from home. While working remotely can be very appealing, it can also present some significant challenges. Struggling with the overall lack of structure has proved to be a significant stressor for many. Multiply this exponentially if, in addition, there are also young children at home.

Stepping away to a quiet and relaxing space is a wonderful way to decompress and recharge. Even if space is limited, it is easy to create a comfortable, cozy corner somewhere in your home as a welcome refuge for reading, meditating, or just some much needed ‘me time’.

HE SPACE

You will want to find a space in your home, be it an entire room, a section of your office, a corner of your living or bedroom, or even an attic or outdoor area that you can call your own. Your space should be secluded and away from high-traffic areas, where you can unplug and disappear for a bit. A place without noise. Make sure it is free from distractions and will provide you a break from your job-related work, daily responsibilities, family members, and/or roommates. MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Your space should be uncluttered and free of electronics (except for music) with lighting that creates a warm and a welcoming environment. If there is room, a big comfy chair with a footstool or ottoman that you can rest your feet on is a good idea. A large overstuffed floor cushion can do the trick if space is tight. Most importantly, it should be a reflection of you, with personal touches that bring calm vibes to help you relax. Things to consider having in your space: • favorite books, magazines and/or a journal • natural elements such as plants, rocks, shells, fresh flowers, etc. • family photos and artwork • fragrance for instant aromatherapy • soft instrumental music (no lyrics!) - or enjoy the silence • a clock within eyesight is also a good idea to keep you mindful of your time

DESTRESS, RELAX & RECHARGE

Being by yourself with no distractions gives you time to unwind, gather your thoughts, and recharge; it gives you the opportunity to shift your focus and be creative. As a result, you may find you are more productive and able to be more present and focused when you return to your world.
