The shop hosts a twice-monthly chocolate school and a Friday night connoisseurs’ evening, while you can linger over the papers with a mug of decadent 64 per cent cocoa on a daily basis.

German-born Falko Burkert took Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market by storm in 2005 – a shop in Bruntsfield opened soon afterwards, followed by one in Gullane. The former, reminiscent of a Viennese grand café, lures you in with its classy décor and indulgent aromas. Falko is a Konditormeister, a masterconfectioner with nine years’ training that has imbued him with both Teutonic precision and artistic flair.

Le Cerise is a cake and coffee shop which sells individual and celebration cakes, pastries and ice-cream, all created freshly on the premises. A range of savoury foods are available, from soups to sandwiches, wraps, toasties and croissants, which can be served with a choice of various fillings. A breakfast menu includes porridge and fruit salad, and many products are gluten-free.

Known for its bread (made using Scottish ingredients where possible and without flour improvers, preservatives or other undesirables), the Manna House is a local bakery found at the top of Easter Road. Everything is made fresh on the premises – from savoury and sweet pastries to cakes, and soups, salads and tarts. Often easier to take away because of its diminutive size, but plans to expand this year mean there will soon be more space to eat in.

At their new Chocolate Studio based at Belhaven Fruit Farm, Nadia Ellingham’s Thinking Chocolate offers a chance not just to buy hand-crafted, 100 per cent cocoa butter chocolates, truffles and tortes, but also to see them being made. There is also the opportunity for chocoholics to try creating their own by attending one of her two-and-a-halfhour practical workshop.

As a former visual merchandiser for Gap, owner Lisa McAllister’s eye for style, coupled with an interest in vintage clothing, gave birth to I Love Candy’s 50s retro look, complete with candy cane colours and kitsch fittings. The original Glasgow and central Edinburgh stores sell the usual jars of old-fashioned sweets along with forgotten and discontinued chocolate bars, novelty sweets and Scottish favourites including soor plooms and hand-made tablet.

A unique store that deserves its reputation for integrity, Peter’s Yard is a destination for foodies looking to treat themselves. This Swedish bakery focuses on quality rather than quantity. Three or four varieties of fresh artisan loaf include rye and sourdough, varying in flavour throughout the week, and they are famous for their knäckebröd (crispbread).
