The Lime Tree An Ealdhain Gallery, Fort William is very pleased to bring such high quality art to the Highlands in the form of our Philip & Mackenzie exhibition. Showcasing a range of landscape and still life, this summer exhibition brings together new works by Scottish artists Jackie Philip and Jennifer Mackenzie. Jackie’s work is informed by a variety of cultures and influenced by her travels in SE Asia and Europe, as well as her native Scotland. Using raw pigment and oil on canvas, Jackie’s paintings are rich in colour and texture alike. Reflecting her time at Glasgow School of Art with tutors Sandie Goudie and David Donaldson, Jennifer’s paintings are very much a personal response to her environment in terms of colour, light and space. Culminating in vibrant, uplifting and expressive paintings.


Jackie Philip

Jackie Philip was born in Edinburgh in 1961 & studied Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, Wimbledon School of Art & The Royal Academy Schools, London from 1978 – 1986 where she has attained 1st class B.A honours & M.A. Since completing her post graduate studies she has been painting fulltime as a professional artist & lectured in London, Florence & Auckland. Jackie has received many prestigious scholarships & awards including the Italian Government Scholarship, British Institute Award & the RSA Hospitalfield Award & Residency. Jackie’s paintings, in the genre of still life & landscape are painted using raw pigment & oil on canvas to create a rich tapestry of colour & luminosity of light. The images are informed by a variety of cultures & influenced by her travels in Asia & Europe, as well as her native Scotland. J. Philip has exhibited widely in the UK & abroad & her work can be found in corporate & private collections in the UK, Italy, Barbados, the Americas, HK & Australasia. For this exhibition Jackie presents new works depicting the Highlands and Islands and a range of still life.

Jennifer Mackenzie

Glen was born in Glasgow and went on to study at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) in 1968-72, carrying on further education with a postgraduate year at GSA and at Hospitalfield College of Art 1972-73. After teacher training in Glasgow Schools Glen then went on to tutor at Glasgow School of Art in 1986. In 1989 he was elected member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts (RGI). Later that year he gave up teaching to concentrate on painting fulltime, something he has been very successful with and was commissioned to paint in Venice. In 1995 he was elected member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (RSW) and then became Vice President of the RSW (West of Scotland) in 2000. In 2007 he went to France having been awarded a residency with L’Association Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Collioure. Fellow exhibitor Douglas Davies was also awarded this residency in which he took in the same year. The paintings in this exhibition depict the Drôme department of France in and around the small village of Chamaret and the Western Isles of Scotland on the island of Colonsay. They are all painted in situ ‘en plain air’ and then finished back in Glen’s studio in Ayrshire. With the exception of Dusk, Irvine Valley, Winter which was painted near his studio in. Glen’s paintings depict a range of landscape and still life and showcase a variety of media, including oil on canvas/panel, gouache and pastel. Glen is influenced by the Glasgow School and French painting.
