THE RIGHTS AND WRONGS OF UNCOILING WIRE ROPE
TYPES OF WIRE ROPE DAMAGE AND WEAR
Abrasion caused by: • rope rubbing on rope, • rubbing on sheaves, • old sheaves with tread pattern marking new rope, • rope anchored both ends and cannot rotate.
Crushing caused by: • inadequate sheave diameter, • overloading, • poor selection of rope working ability, • internal corrosion of core, • fibre core used in steel core application.
Rope ‘bird-caged’ due to: • tortional damage, • error during installation, • wrong selection of wire rope.
Overloading due to poor selection of rope diameter and/or grade.
Bending fatigue caused by: • bending over small diameter drums or sheaves, • not enough flexibility in wire rope, • tensile strength too high.
