A Brief History of the Puget Sound League

The original eight members: Puyallup, Sumner, Buckley (Pierce County); Enumclaw, Auburn, Kent Renton, and Highline (King County) first banded together to exchange football competition. During the first five years, relations were cemented and rules and regulations were formulated. For eight years the Puget Sound League sat outside of the state tournament although many considered that some of the great Renton, Enumclaw and Buckley teams of that era would have finished high in the standings. Gradually state high school athletic officials began to see that the Puget Sound League’s stand was correct. An extra day was added to the state tournament in 1938 to include that Puget Sound League. In 1939 the Puget Sound League petitioned for a direct entry for its champion into the sate contest. This petition was delayed for a year, but finally in 1940 a one-game elimination playoff was set up for 1941 as a preliminary to a general state redistricting in 1942. When the state was redistricted the Puget Sound League was given a place for its champion. Today the league is called the South Puget Sound League with a north and a south division. Teams have come and teams have gone as divisions have changed and evolved. One constant has been the inclusion of Puyallup. Now with three high schools, the Puyallup School District has and will continue to maintain a strong showing in the league.

MORE THAN A NAME TO VIKING ATHLETES

In the spring of 1970, the Puyallup School Board decided to rename a number of schools and school facilities in honor of person who had given outstanding service to the district in a number of ways. This was a time of growth in the district. East Junior High was re-named Kalles Junior High in honor of Eileen B. Kalles, who had served on both the Puyallup and Washington state school boards. Aylen (West) Junior High was named honoring Dr. Charles Aylen, a prominent Puyallup physician who had also given long service on the Puyallup School Board. Harry P. Hansen Pool and Paul Hanawalt Pavilion at Puyallup High School were named for former high school principals. Hanawalt also served as superintendent of schools for many years. Carl Sparks organized the athletic department for the Puyallup School District’s second high school, Rogers, which started in 1970. With the new high school in the district, the football stadium, Viking Field, no longer was appropriate. The school board renamed it Carl Sparks Stadium. The man honored thus was more than just a name. To a whole generation of Puyallup High School students, he was a beloved coach of both football and basketball. Many a young man owes his standard of honesty and integrity to the standards set and the personal interest shown to him by Coach Sparks. Sparks came to Puyallup High School in 1939 from Onalaska to be assistant football coach for Al Dalberg. When Dalberg went into military service in 1941, Sparks succeeded him as head coach. His Puyallup football team had an overall record of 95 wins, 31 losses and 12 ties, plus 5

COACHES: Carl Sparks and Kak Wasmund league titles. He coached basketball from 1941-1950, when Dean Nicholson took over. He amassed an 85 win, 48 loss mark and a 0.639 winning percentage. He also coached track in 1951 & 1952. In 1945, Carl restarted baseball at PHS, which he coached for one year before handing the coaching duties over to Carl “Kak” Wasmund. In 1966, Carl Sparks underwent openheart surgery which prolonged his life a few years. He died in November 1969. His wife, Doris, followed him in death in January 1972. Their two sons, Clayton and Douglas, and their families live in the Puyallup area. A daughter, Carolyn, resides in Seattle. Another big honor to Carl came on August 8, 1980 when he was inducted into the Washington State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Shortly after his death, his longtime fishing partner and Puyallup High school principal, Don Hartung, began the Carl Sparks Memorial Scholarship that is still given annually to a Puyallup High School student athlete. To his family, Sparks was a loving and loved father and grandfather. The great grandchildren of Sparks’ family are now attending Puyallup High School.

A number of Puyallup Viking football alums took time out of their busy schedules to inspire these future Viks. Former Viking stars including Damon Huard, Dane Looker, Kenny Fleisch, Danny Thurston, Todd Elstrom, Mario Casello, and Dean Pierce (Camp Director) returned to Sparks Stadium for the first-ever Vikings Legends football camp.

By Stacy Jeffers

On June 28th, the first annual Viking Legends Football camp made its way to Sparks Stadium. Participants, ranging in age from five to fourteen, spent three days learning throwing and catching skills as well as routes and defense. They not only learned about football from current Viking coaches, but also from some of the Viking greats.

Mario Casello, current principal at Kalles Junior High was thrilled to be back at Sparks Stadium to help out with camp. “It was great to see so many young kids come out and get excited about Viking football. This camp was a step in the right direction to help emphasize what is so important about our program… and that is the pride and tradition of Puyallup football. The kids that came out to camp are still talking about it, and already are getting the itch and desire to bleed purple!” Casello said. The combination of former and future Vikings brought a smile to Camp Director, Dean Pierce. Pierce was the brainchild behind getting the camp up and going and Coach Jeffers was more than willing and excited to support the community by heading up the camp. Puyallup has a history of being a football town

which was proven by the 88 future Vikings that came out to show their stuff on the gridiron. Jeffers said, “It (Puyallup Football) is so much bigger than one person; it is a community effort and experience and I am thrilled to be able to be a part of it all.” Damon Huard, former NFL and U of W quarterback didn’t hesitate to take time out of his busy schedule to represent the Viking Legends, “It was a lot of fun for me to come back and be a part of the Vikings legend camp this past summer. It brought back so many wonderful memories of my days growing up at Sparks stadium, going to practice with my Dad, and then later playing there in high school. I learned the game of football there, and now to be able to go back and work with the kids is big thrill for me. I tell all the kids that if football is their passion and they want to take it to the next level, if they believe in themselves and work hard, they can accomplish anything. I am excited for Gary and this opportunity that he has to captain the Viking Ship. He was the right man at the right time. I am excited to see the ball in the air this fall… that is Viking Football on Offense! Go Viks!”

Coach Jeffers echoed Huard’s thoughts, “The kids are enjoying learning from the legends of the Puyallup Vikings football program of years past. This camp speaks volumes about how strong the Puyallup Vikings football tradition is here. Most of these guys have really busy schedules, but they’ve taken the time to give back to our football program by offering their knowledge to these young football players.” Jeffers said, “We want every player here to love the game of football. This is the goal of the camp.” And, wouldn’t it be something if one day these players were proudly wearing purple and gold, making their own memories and even becoming Viking legends!

Building on Viking Tradition: All players who attended the Viking Legends camp have the opportunity to lead the current Viking Football players onto the field at every home game. Just wear your camp t-shirt to the games and be available to run onto the field when instructed. If you would like information on Viking Legends Camp or if you are a Viking legend and would like to get involved; contact Dean Pierce at vikinglegendscamp@gmail.com.
