Front cover: This dream Davonport kitchen features an island which is an absolute showstopper p38.

F

rom longer, warmer days to much-anticipated summer holidays almost within touching distance, there’s much to trigger the feel-good hormones at this time of year.

Our June issue therefore shines the light on some home trends that can take our levels of contentment up a notch; the interior design equivalents of a hug from a loved one or a beachside cocktail as the sun sets. There is little more that warms the cockles than a wellness retreat, so it’s no surprise that an increasing number of us are recreating the high we get from a luxury resort by investing in a personal paradise. We take a look at some exhilarating examples of spa-inspired spaces and pleasure-laden products to take the stress out of the day, Sublime Soaks (p74). We’ve also rounded up showerheads that are guaranteed to stimulate the senses and soothe those muscle knots, Focus on Statement Showerheads (p25). Quality time with our family and friends is another surefire way to make us feel happy – and where better than in the heart of the home, the kitchen? Sharing a meal together, socialising and relaxing afterwards are a recipe for hygge heaven and broken-plan living is fast proving the layout of choice for those who want to create the perfect, all-embracing living space, Broken Homes (p60). We also investigate the ‘personalisation’ trend – how many of us are moving away from an off-the-peg kitchen to inject some of our own personality into the space we spend so much time in. Incorporating touches of who we are, what we like in life or fond memories from the past are great ways to make us feel all warm and cosy inside, Let’s Get Personal (p30). And for a showstopping kitchen made to a homeowner’s personal taste and desires, see our amazing Real Homes case study, Opulence to Order (p38). Hope you enjoy!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Why is the UK so in love with rooflights? Shaun: ooflights can totally transform a space in a way that no other uilding material can ssentially what you are doing is opening up your roof and replacing traditional artificial lighting with natural daylight he difference this can ma e to the design of a itchen or athroom is literally night and day What can natural light achieve in a space that artificial light cannot? Paul: umerous studies ha e pro en the psychological and physical enefits of natural daylight n all en ironments our rains respond etter to natural light which means people perform etter hildren perform etter in schools wor ers perform etter in the office and people are happier at home when e posed to daylight What are the hard and fast rules of rooflight design? Shaun: ery pro ect is different and there are no set rules ome people prefer a single large rooflight spanning the entire roof structure others prefer smaller rooflights designed to illuminate different parts of a room hat is important is that you achie e a loo and feel that lends in with the rest of your home etting the design right at the ery eginning is so important Is there a different approach for the kitchen compared to bathroom space? Shaun: o not really although whate er the application you need to consider the design implications or e ample is the roof pitched or flat will you e a le to reach the rooflight opening mechanism or will you need remote controlled electric

actuators is your property listed or in a onser ation rea in which case you may need a rooflight that sits flush with the roof Paul: he main consideration for anyone loo ing to install a rooflight is the amount of light that it lets into the room ow this may sound o ious ut you’ll e surprised how often it gets o erloo ed What additional features can you request with a rooflight? Paul: ustomers can select from a wide range of accessories things li e electric actuation opening mechanisms electric or manual linds self cleaning gla ing specialist paint treatments for coastal properties and wind and rain sensors How have designs changed over the years and where is the trend heading? Paul: he main trend we ha e seen is the constant ad ancement in rooflight technology especially in respect to the frames and gla ing e ha e in ested hea ily in our rooflight design o er the years to ensure we continue to offer industry leading thermal performance e are certainly eing UTOPIA KITCHEN & BATHROOM JUNE 2018

Shaun: etting the right design might e one of the first considerations when choosing your rooflight ut from a practical iewpoint the most important thing to thin a out will e the physical iewa le area of gla ing t is important to understand that the amount of light that enters your property relates to the internal iewa le si e rather than the more general fi ing si e of the rooflight Paul: on’t e affled y edge to edge glass it’s what’s underneath that counts n other words what’s the point in ha ing a window you can’t loo out of

“The kitchen units were inspired by our client’s father – the swirling pattern on the walnut is reminiscent of the smoke from his cigars, so it was a really personal aspect for us to include.” John Pope, director of Octagon Bespoke division. From digital technology to the retail experience, personalisation has become a hot trend of late, perhaps born out of an intrinsic human desire to be treated as an individual; an antidote to the mass market approach. The world of interior design is also responding to a surge in homeowners wanting to put their own unique stamp on the main space in which they live. This isn’t simply about making a style statement; it’s a way of reflecting who we are, what we like and creating an emotional connection with the space where we spend a significant amount of time with family and friends.

As the heart of the home, the kitchen is the perfect space for the personal touch, which can be inspired by anything from simple colour preferences to passions, hobbies and nostalgic experiences. According to Richard Delane, creative director at The Wood Works, a bespoke furniture design company, personalisation requires a personal approach. “Homeowners are definitely shifting away from ‘off-the-peg’ kitchens and are instead opting to add their own personality into their kitchen, from the way it is designed to meet their needs through to quirks such as colour choices.

I

f your dream kitchen is a no-expense-spared, no-holds-barred living and entertaining space that exudes luxury and glamour from every nook and cranny, you quickly get to grips with the true meaning of ‘bespoke’. That’s what company director Tabby Manning discovered when embarking on her plans for a new, spectacular kitchen to complement the rest of her impressive property, which she also had uilt to her precise design specifications “I wanted a grand kitchen with real wow factor. The whole house is opulent and very grand, so I needed the kitchen to be in keeping. Plus, the layout of the ground floor is open plan so the style of the itchen impacts on the rest of the house a lot,” explains Tabby, who appointed Richard Davonport, founder and managing director of bespoke kitchens specialist, Davonport, to undertake the ambitious project. “When I visited the Davonport showroom, Richard also showed me the workshops. Having visited several other ‘bespoke’ companies, it became clear that some other companies were using the bespoke label incorrectly…it became clear that Davonport really would be able to create what I was looking for, so the decision became very easy.” Tabby desired a classic look with a contemporary feel that oozed lashings of glamour at the same time – but functionality was also a priority in terms of cooking and entertaining for a large family and guests. And top of her list was a unique, show-stopping island.

A combination of hand-painted, off-white furniture and walnut feature cabinets creates a classic but stunning design scheme. Burr walnut detailing on the circular units at both ends of the island inject added sumptuousness. To echo the curve of the island, spherical corbels are used throughout the room, most notably on the mantel.

REAL HOME

“The range cooker is amazing for cooking for the whole family and I purposefully chose a big fridge for family gatherings,” says Tabby.

Inspired by Davonport’s Belgravia style with a signature silver bead detail on the doors, the kitchen was designed comprising a combination of hand-painted, off-white furniture and walnut feature cabinets with a breathtakingly beautiful, one-of-its-kind island taking centre stage. “I was desperate to have a totally unique island, so when Richard came up with a design that featured a floating island and had found a way to construct what I was looking for, it was so exciting.”

Complementing the chrome bead detail on the Belgravia door, there are chrome details throughout the room, including the handles and trim on the walnut island chopping block.

Richard comments, “Tabby has a very opulent style and wanted the kitchen to feel glamourous, luxurious and opulent... It’s an enormous room, so it was always going to have a bold, large island and this was a crucial part of the brief. Tabby wanted her kitchen island to be totally unique; in fact, the rief e en featured a floating’ itchen island

“I wanted total luxury and something that would turn heads, so I loved the walnut aspects and grand scale of the whole design…The island always gets commented on by guests; it’s a real showstopper, which was exactly what I wanted.” Tabby Manning, homeowner

Spotlights throughout the room provide the main functional lighting, while there is extensive decorative lighting. The pendant chandeliers above the island add a warm, white hue as well as glamour to the wider scheme. Furthermore, there is plinth lighting and colour change strip lighting above the wall units for entertaining.

THE designer

f you re planning on creating a kitchen with wow factor, and your budget allows, it s well worth choosing a bespoke company. he oating island is what gi es this design its style and distinctive wow factor and the island was only possible because Da onport kitchen furniture is bespoke. lso, be open and honest with your kitchen designer - the more open you are, the higher the chances that they will fulďŹ l your brief. Richard Davonport, founder and managing director, Davonport

Broken homes

Broken-plan living offers everything we love about open-plan design but without the less desirable issues.

KITCHENS

“In a recent project in St John’s Wood [shown above], I created a broken-plan scheme featuring a darker, more dramatic living space to contrast with a light and bright kitchen and dining area, awash with natural light. This breaks the room up, giving me the chance to experiment with different design styles in different sections of the home.” Brian Woulfe, founder and managing director of Designed by Woulfe An open-plan design has long been a popular format for the heart of the home, but it’s not without its drawbacks. Take kitchen noise issues and unsightly dishes, for instance; not ideal when you just want to relax. Hence, the rising popularity of broken-plan living, which is fast becoming the layout of choice. Keith Atkins, director of design for DesignSpace London, explains, “There are so many different ways to achieve broken-plan, ranging from creating physically raised or sunken areas to defining dedicated ones y using

furniture as space dividers; from a kitchen island or peninsular to freestanding shelves or cabinets – sometimes even on wheels to retain maximum fle i ility for the o erall space he result is an airy flowing and spacious feel while fulfilling the separate functional, social and relaxation requirements of informal, modernday living; with this alternative, you get connectivity and privacy at the same time. “An open-plan kitchen is the heart of the home comments om Howley creative design director of Tom Howley Kitchens, observing the evolving trend.

“The previous heart of the home, the living room, has transformed into a space for entertainment, with innovative technology and high specification media walls now ta en as part and parcel,” adds Tom. “However, the two spaces are often combined in modern homes and have a social essence, meaning that families are using these spaces to engage with each other on a deeper level, rather than muttering over the constant underscore of the television. If the heart lies in spending quality time with loved ones, then the openplan itchen ta es that spot Brian Woulfe, founder and managing director of Designed by Woulfe, adds, “ n an open plan or ro en plan home it is important to create distinct zones for different purposes. Steve Tough, commercial sales director for Masterclass, says, “The social aspect of an open plan itchen is a ig enefit so opting for a broken-plan kitchen shouldn’t jeopardise this. Think about why you want a broken-plan kitchen, the kind of tasks that will be carried out in it and who uses it before nailing down any plans. “A simple change in the décor can effectively divide up the space visually, without sacrificing anything y way of flow of light or the social aspect of the space. Décor and furniture can play a key part in how the space is used and are less permanent and less invasive ways of combining togetherness and privacy.”

Barely a month goes by these days without new research warning of the stresses of modern life and the detrimental impact on health. It’s why many of us pack a bag and head for the nearest spa for some well-earned pampering and relaxation - whenever time and responsibilities allow. So, it’s no surprise really that an increasing number of homeowners are investing in their own bathroom oasis where they can relax, unwind and recharge on a daily basis. In fact, it’s one of the top home trends for 2018.

Julia Kendell, interior design spokesperson for The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show, held recently, observes, “With life increasingly fast-paced, creating a spa-like retreat in the bathroom is high on the wish list for many. “A neutral scheme with natural materials such as marble or textural slate are a key theme for 2018.” Anthony Smith, managing director for Waters Baths of Ashbourne, advises, “Choose organic shapes and materials such as matt stone, which will bring a distinctive edge to the bathroom while introducing a natural look and feel. Stone is a real delight to the skin and helps to retain heat. “Stick to soft, calming, neutral colours that aid relaxation rather than bright tones, which can

sometimes stimulate your senses rather than help you wind down.” A stunning freestanding bath is top of most people’s must-have items when trying to create a spa-inspired bathroom in the comfort of their own home, adds Anthony, while waterfall ath fillers will enhance the loo and add a striking, natural effect. A large bath for leisurely soaks goes without saying, but Julia cautions to always try for comfort before purchasing – it’s not just how good it looks that’s important - and to rank the right ambience as high as surfaces fi tures and fittings “Ensure adequate storage to ensure a restful, uncluttered environment and upgrade the lighting to a dimmable circuit. Integral speakers in the bathroom will contribute to the bathing experience.” Jonathan Stanley, vice-president of marketing for premium quartz surfaces manufacturer, Caesarstone UK, says the options are endless if you want to go the full hog. “If you’re lucky enough to have a large area to work with when designing your new bathroom, consider adding a touch of hotel chic with a luxurious, walk-in shower or bring spa style into your home with your very own steam shower cabin or Bluetoothenabled, illuminated bath complete with massage jets to target aches and pains.”

REAL HOME

“Steam rooms are amazing relaxation spaces and I would always use a darker glass to keep the bright light out. Using crisp, white marble means that it never dates as it has been around for hundreds of years and still is a big seller for us every day but, depending on budget and look, there are some great porcelain copies in large panels as well.” Joe Mühl, design, sales and technical director, Ocean Bathrooms

A

s a couple with high-pressured jobs and a young family, Joseph and Anna Goldhammer wanted to make their home environment a relaxing retreat to shrug off the stresses of the day. So, when they embarked on a renovation of their recently acquired, turn-of-the-century house, the Goldhammers earmarked the bathroom for a luxurious haven of tranquillity. The brief was “to create a bathroom with space for a steam room as we both have high-pressure jobs and it would be good to have somewhere to relax and unwind,” comments Joseph. The couple appointed Joe Mühl, design, sales and technical director for Ocean Bathrooms, which has an inhouse installation team, after a recommendation and observing previous projects that he had undertaken. Taking into consideration their preference for traditional fi tures and fittings oe went for a Victorian style in keeping with the house’s origins that incorporated Thomas Crapper sanitary ware “as the client loved the style and heritage of the product”. The fact that the cistern could be given a specific arrow and all paint finish to match a freestanding bath was also highly appealing. The steam room was designed to feature a The Thomas Crapper toilet cistern in a Farrow and all rassica paint finish was colour-matched to the freestanding bath. UTOPIA KITCHEN & BATHROOM JUNE 2018

bespoke Majestic Napoli steam shower enclosure with grey, tinted glass and a Hansgrohe Axor ShowerHeaven to provide “the ultimate luxurious showering experience”. Arabescato marble was selected for the walls and flooring to consolidate the sumptuous loo and feel oe is delighted with the “ ery crisp finish that has een achieved. “I really like the look of the showering and steam space as it’s relaxing and looks stunning. I am also very pleased with the layout as everything can be accessed easily, and you also have a great view from the Thomas Crapper basin when standing at the window.” oseph wholeheartedly agrees adding “ he final design is fantastic oe has managed to fit in everything we wanted without compromising. The installers did an amazing job and it looks the same as on his 3D designs. We love the steam room as it is the main thing we wanted, but we also really enjoy using the ShowerHeaven, which is the best showering experience I have ever had. And, of course, to own a ‘Crapper’ toilet, which I love!”
