neat, clean, and in good repair. Footwear is required at all times. Students who are out of dress code shall be sent back to their Houses to change and will receive a tardy mark for their class attendance. 1. Class Dress During hours when classes are in session, including lunch and School meetings, the following dress code applies: Boys • Boys must wear collared shirts, turtlenecks, or sweaters. Sweatshirts do not fulfill dress code requirements. • Pants: khakis, denim jeans, trousers • Shorts: tailored, Bermuda length Girls • Girls may wear dresses, skirts, pants, or denim jeans with blouses, sweaters, and shirts. Leggings must be worn under long tops or very short dresses. • Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be fingertip length or longer. • Sleeveless shirts are acceptable as long as the straps are one inch or wider. Team members may wear parts of their uniforms to classes on game days with the approval of their coaches. 2. Formal Dress For Chapel and other formal School functions, the following Formal Dress applies: Boys • Sports coat or suit • Dress shirt with tie • Long trousers • Regular shoes, not sandals or flip-flops Girls • More formal dresses • Skirt and blouse or sweater • Dress pants • Dress shoes or sandals, though not flip flops
• Strapless dresses are only appropriate if a sweater is worn with them. The Following Items Do Not Meet Either Class Or Formal Dress Code • Any clothing that is torn or frayed • Pants and shorts which reveal underwear • Pajamas, sweatpants, and athletic shorts • Clothing which advertises tobacco, alcohol, or drug products, or which contains inappropriate or vulgar messages • Clothing which exposes the midriff, bares the back, or has a plunging or lowcut neckline • Tube tops and halter tops • Plain or imprinted t-shirts Hats and caps must be removed in classroom buildings, the library, and dining facilities. Community Obligations
Class Attendance & Course Credit Students are expected to attend all classes and required appointments. Absence from class is excusable only for: • I llness, certified by a Health Center excuse for boarding students or a note from home in the case of day students. •O fficial School trips connected with athletic events, extracurricular activities, and special group activities • S pecial requests to miss classes for other reasons must be approved by the Office of Student Services. Permissions are granted rarely and then only reluctantly. Students who receive multiple Censures for unexcused absences will be subject to increased penalties, including the possibility of dismissal. When a student checks in to his/her House in the evening, he/she should inquire as to whether he/she has accumulated any class absences. Students have one week to contest unexcused absences; after that, the absence will stand. Classroom teachers may not excuse absences—only Housemasters and Day Student Advisors 29
