Driver’s license: There’s now an app to carry it on your phone

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana residents can now carry their driver’s license on their smartphone. News outlets report a new phone app, created through a 2016 state law, offers a digital version of the Louisiana driver’s license, allowing motorists an option aside from carrying a physical license. The smartphone app is called LA Wallet. Though the app is free to download, a $5.99 charge is required to activate the license. Once activated, LA Wallet enables cellphones to display an image of the physical driver’s license. “Most people never leave home without their smartphone, and with this app they will never be without their driver’s license,” Gov. John Bel Edwards said in a statement. The digital license is good for the life of the issuance. When the physical license expires, See License Page 3-A

JP Bash gearing up to help wishes come true for local critically ill children Holly McKeon, Contributing Writer

Jory Pitre will be smiling that infectious smile of his from above and upon the Bayou this Saturday when the Sixth Annual JP Bash fundraiser kicks off at the Cut Off Youth Center. The event was a way for his friends, Scott and Lorey Boura, to do something grand in remembrance of Jory after he lost his battle with unclassified spindle cell sarcoma on July 16, 2012, only nine days after his twentieth birthday. This selfless act of love on the Boura’s part quickly became a tradition and grown tremendously over the last six years. The annual event is also a lasting wish from Jory himself before his passing. The ability to pay it forward by raising funds to allow children with life-threatening illnesses to be granted a wish through the Troop C Grant-A-Wish (TCGAW) organization was something Jory held in very high regard. Pitre’s mother, Zena said, “Jory new

what a blessing TCGAW was for him. It gave him a reason to fight. He knew the wonderful impact it would have on children in our area who are facing debilitating diseases. This is why we continue to support TCGAW in Jory’s honor and raise money each year to bring smiles to the faces of local children suffering critical illnesses.” One hundred percent of Bash donations are gifted to the Louisiana State Police Troop C Grant-A-Wish organization and dispersed in the form of wishes coming true for the community’s children plagued by disease. Unlike the similar Make A Wish Foundation or Give Kids the World Organization, both of which provide grant wishing for children with life-threatening illnesses across the United States, Grant-A-Wish is localized in the Troop C area only and includes Assumption, Lafourche, Terrebonne, St. James, and St. John Parishes on the west side of the Mississippi River. Funds raised here, stay here. The relationship between Jory and Troop C Grant-A-Wish began after he received his diagnosis of unclassified spindle-cell sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer, in March of 2010. In Jory’s case, the disease started with a tumor that began in his left hip and spread to his lungs. Dr. Brett Casey of Gulf Coasts Orthopedics in Houma discovered the tumor while treating Jory for an unrelated stress fracture in his calf.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will host a tax title sale on Wednesday, July 25. The tax sale will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 8 p.m., or earlier if all properties are sold. By hosting the sale online, bidders that would not normally be able to attend the auction in person are still able to participate. Currently, 377 properties are slated to go to sale. This sale is open to the general public. Free registration and a list of available properties are now available through their website at www.LPSO.net. Bidders are encouraged to participate online from the comfort and privacy of their own computer, but a limited number of computer terminals will be available on the date of the tax sale on the third floor of the Block Building. These computer terminals will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis. An LPSO representative will be on hand to direct you to the computer terminal area. A tax title sale is the sale of properties that have delinquent taxes due. The tax titles for these properties are sold to the public for the amount of the delinquent taxes due, plus any accrued interest, penalties, costs and other statutory impositions. The tax title sale is a “low bid wins” style auction in which the property is sold to the purchaser willing to bid on the least percent ownership interest in the property. Winning bidders of the tax sale are expected to pay for their purchases within 72 hours of the close of the auction. Payment must be made in full, and all sales are final. Property owners must remit property tax payments by 4:00 p.m. on July 24, to avoid having their property subject to sale. Bills not paid in full by this time will result in the See Sale Page 3-A

A woman and a frog

A woman was out golfing and hit the ball deep into the woods. When she went to look for it she found a frog in a trap. The frog said to her, “If you release me from this trap, I will grant you three wishes.” The woman freed the frog, and the frog said, “Thank you, but I failed to mention that there was a condition to your wishes. Whatever you wish for, your husband will get times ten!” The woman said, “That’s okay.” For her first wish, she wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the world. The frog warned her, “You do realize that this wish will also make your husband the most handsome man in the world, an Adonis whom women will flock to.” The woman replied, “That’s okay, because I will be the most beautiful woman and he will have eyes only for me.” So, KAZAM-she’s the most beautiful woman in the world! For her second wish, she wanted to be the richest woman in the world. The frog said, “That will make your husband the richest man in the world. And he will be ten

times richer than you.” The woman said, “That’s okay, because what’s mine is his and what’s his is mine.” So, KAZAM-she’s the richest woman in the world! The frog then inquired about her third

wish, and she answered, “I’d like a mild heart attack.” Moral of the story: Women are clever. Don’t mess with them. Attention female readers: This is the end of the joke for you. Stop here and continue to feel good. Male readers: Please scroll down. The man had a heart attack ten times milder than his wife. Moral of the story: Women think they’re really smart. Let them continue to think that way and just enjoy the show. Note: If you are a woman and are still reading this; it only goes to show that women never listen.

Bash From 1-A

Once diagnosed, Pitre underwent surgery and a multitude of chemotherapy rounds at the Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center over a span of more than two years. It was at that time, Dr. Casey who is a sponsor of Troop C’s GAW, contacted the organization on Pitre’s behalf and provided the introduction. That introduction would prove inspirational and would last over the balance of Jory’s life and beyond. Pitre’s memory continues to live on through JPB as well as other events in his name throughout the year. Proceeds from all events are donated to TCGAW. Maybe even more importantly, his vision recognized and brought to fruition, to help terminally ill children receive the opportunity of a wish coming true. A child’s dream realized can make a lasting difference and can resonate with that child for their lifetime. JPB has become a “must do good time for a good cause in Lafourche Parish. motorists will have to renew their license with the state Office of Motor Vehicles and buy a new digital license. LA Wallet was designed by the state police and the Office of Motor Vehicles. It was developed by Envoc, a Louisiana-based software development firm. OMV Commissioner Karen St. Germain said safety measures have been built into the digital license app. “The safety of the app has been tested with all industry-standard security measures, and with pin number protection, it is protected from anyone using a user’s license information, she said. St. Germain said if a user’s phone is lost or stolen, the motorist can log into an online portal to unlink license information from the mobile device. St. Germain said the app does not track the user’s location. The legislation calling for a digital driver’s license was sponsored by state Rep. Ted James, a Baton Rouge Democrat.
