iGiveCatholic raises $461,368 for local ministries

Schriever, LA – The results of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux’s #iGiveCatholic are in! With more than 1,600 donors, a total of $461,368 was raised for the local community during the 24-hour online giving event held on #GivingTuesday, December 3. The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux raised the second highest figure of all Louisiana dioceses, and was ranked within the top ten nationally. “I am deeply grateful for your faith and your sacrificial generosity during iGiveCatholic, which is a great inspiration to me,” says Bishop Shelton J. Fabre, speaking from Rome where later in the same day he participated in a private audience with Pope Francis during his Ad Limina visit to the Vatican. See Give Page 3-A

Constitutional convention unlikely, though structural change still possible By David Jacobs The Center Square

While the nearterm possibility of a state constitutional convention in Louisiana may have died with Gov. John Bel Edwards’ re-election, there are other ways to tackle the issues convention supporters want to address. “We don’t see a path to a convention,” said Robert Travis Scott, president of the Public Affairs Research Coun-

Lafourche’s first female judge takes the bench By Halle Parker Daily Comet Staff Writer

Standing in the center of the old courthouse in Thibodaux and repeating after her husband, Marla Abel Marla Abel took her oath to become Lafourche Parish’s first female judge. The court was packed, standing in unison for a long round of applause after Abel was officially sworn in to the 17th Judicial District Court. She took her place with other judges from Lafourche and Terrebonne. “To the great citizens of our parish, I will be forever grateful for your confidence in my capacity to serve you in this position,” she said, while standing at the podium and wearing her robe for the first

time. She continued, “I will work in every way that I can to justify your faith in me.” Abel defeated two male attorneys to fill the Division C seat vacated by Judge Walt Lanier III after he was elected the state appellate court last year. Noting that she wasn’t the likeliest of candidates, she said she learned early in the race that they had limited resources for the campaign. “We were just a group of young people without a lot of political experience who all believed that it was possible,” said Abel. Abel worked as a clerk for the judicial district before becoming a full-time attorney in Lafourche. Judge John LeBlanc, who presides over Division A, welcomed Abel onto the bench next to him during the ceremony. See Judge Page 3-A

An attempt to formally request the resignation of the Lafourche Parish School Board’s president failed to gain momentum last Wednesday. Two school board members, Al Archer and Clyde Duplantis, asked their peers to consider calling for board president Brooke Huddleston to step down, citing a lack of trust in her leadership abilities and professionalism. “Staying on as president will hamper board unity, board respect, allow continued criticism from the community and embarrassment,” said Archer in his remarks. “Stepping down as president will allow the board and district to heal, regain public trust, move forward, increase morale and allow us a new beginning and fresh start.” Huddleston’s first year in leadership saw a lengthy medical leave, the departure of the newly selected superintendent and the appointment of a temporary replacement. Archer and Duplantis pointed to questions they’ve received about why the district is using money to pay for two superintendent salaries. Several other board members stated that while Huddleston had made mistakes in her first term, she wasn’t the cause of superintendent Louis Voiron’s exit. They also argued that the request created more division on the board. See Board Page 3-A

Little Payton Reinhardt, sitting on Santa’s lap, was just one of about 700 children who visited with Santa and Mrs. Clause Friday night during the Town of Lockport’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Bayouside Park. All the children visiting received a free gift.

It was more than just fresh paint and new flooring – it was giving a new lease on life for a long-standing staple in the Larose community. Though much detail regarding the value of the cost of renovations and comments from the Restaurant: Impossible and Balcony representatives were limited, it was clear that the generosity and hospitality that the residents of Lafourche showed greatly impacted the success of the restaurant’s reopening on November 22. The average American will spend $920 on Christmas gifts this year reaching a total of more than $1 trillion in holiday spending. Eight percent said they would spend nothing, and three percent said they were unsure. Twentynine percent expected their gift spending to be between $100 and $499 according to stats from Investopedia. In 2001, the average American planned to spend $1,052 - the highest ever. Following the financial crash in 2008, planned holiday shopping dropped to $417 in 2009 - less than half of what people planned to spend in 2018 according to the National Retail Federation. Americans have been spending more on holiday gifts every year since 2008 (except 2012); although the holiday spending is still not back on the prerecession trend, it seems to be headed in that direction - possibly thanks to lower unemployment, stronger growth, and higher confidence in the economy. I can’t find a stat for the number of people who receive stuff on Christmas they really don’t want or need. Often these gifts are from people who can’t afford to buy Christmas gifts. The average American racked up $1,018 in credit card debt in 2018 according to a

CNBC report. Most of these Americans spent the last year trying to pay off that debt. Why do people do such crazy stuff? It’s good that we want to give. Giving makes us feel good, but it won’t make you feel good when you are still paying for it in July. Think about ways to give that you can afford or that might be more meaningful. How about make lunch or share your evening meal with someone? Offer babysitting for a night as a gift. Write a letter of recommendation for an unemployed friend. Write someone a note and let them know what they have meant to you over the years. Offer an hour or even an evening of your time to a friend or family member to chat over a snack. Relieve a relative who spends hours and days at the nursing home. Go and take their place for a day to help out. You might be thinking - “I’d rather just send or give them a gift.” Exactly, because time is our most precious gift and asset. One of my best friends died not too long ago. He had a lot of money. He said, “Glenn, the only thing I want is

just one more day.” As we face this life and look at all our stuff how much does it really mean to us in comparison to our time and relationships, love, friendship and the ability to enjoy life? Keep in mind Christmas is about someone - Jesus. He gave us his time, his life, and what he did and became for all humanity continues to be the greatest gift.

Board

From 1-A

“Brooke will stay here,” said board member Cheryl Thomas. “She is not going to resign, and we will vote for her to stay right in her seat as president because she has done nothing wrong, and she has done everything to the best of her ability.” Board member Dennis Guillot noted that while he didn’t vote Huddleston into the presidency, he voted against the proposed removal to respect those who did. He also suggested the board change its policy to select presidents every year rather than every two years. Only board member Valerie Bourgeois joined Archer and Duplantis in voting for Huddleston to step down. Board members Tyler Dufrene, Randy Schouest, Barry Plaisance, Ray Bernard, Troy Dufrene, Thomas, Guillot and Huddleston voted against the proposal. Board members Tina Babin, Mary Breaud and Marian Fertitta abstained. In her comments, Babin said she hoped the discussion would be

viewed as “constructive criticism.” Lafourche Parish residents appeared in front of the board on both sides of the request, with some calling attention to the board’s failure to follow Robert’s Rules of Order during meetings and criticizing Huddleston’s professionalism. Others supported Huddleston, stating she had been a champion for bus drivers and deserved the chance to overcome mistakes in her position. During last Wednesday’s meeting, the board also introduced Henry Lafont Jr., who will serve as the interim board member for District 12 as early as the January meeting. He will fill the seat vacated by former board member Robby Gisclair, who resigned while facing a criminal charge of theft. “To the residents of District 12 and to all the residents of Lafourche Parish, I can assure you I will do the best job that I can,” said Lafont. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Halle Parker can be reached at hparker@houmatoday.com or 857-2204. “We will never (again) have a woman judge elected in Lafourche Parish for the first time,” he said. LeBlanc said he believed Abel’s election would bring a fresh perspective. “She comes from a different place than we all do as far as technology, geographically and gender but its time that we all start looking around differently at things,” he said. During the campaign, Abel spoke about her plans to make court proceedings more efficient by using electronic-filing and case management systems and ensure her rulings are easy for parties to understand. To close the ceremony, Abel pulled LeBlanc’s microphone to her and said her first, “Court adjourned.” — Daily Comet Staff Writer Halle Parker can be reached at hparker@houmatoday.com or 857-2204. Per contracts with Food Network, posts and discussion regarding the renovations have been kept to a minimum until the episode featuring The Balcony airs. However, based on the word of patrons who have attended the Larose favorite, the quality of both the food and the atmosphere has increased “beyond measure”. According to one source, “The food was always good, but now it’s even better, and now we want to stay and enjoy rather than just leave.” “You can tell people want to be here,” another patron said. “We are astounded and grateful for the outpouring of support of all of our church parishes, schools and ministries,” says Amy Ponson, executive director of the Catholic Foundation of South Louisiana. “Because of your support, our parishes and schools will be able to replace roofs, purchase new air conditioners, upgrade security cameras and so much more.” Within the diocese, $71,575 was raised for parking lot improvements at Maria Immacolata Catholic Church, which topped the list locally, and a figure that ranked 12th nationally. St. Bernadette Catholic Church and School teamed up to raise $31,025 for new air conditioners for their Fr. Patrick O’Brien Center, but their 266 donors ranked them fourth in the country in that category. Nationally, over $7.4 million was raised for 1,743 ministries this week – making this the most successful Catholic crowdfunding event to date. No. 1 Bison pull away in second half to defeat Colonels, 37-13 From NSU Athletics

FARGO, N.D. – The No. 19 Nicholls State University football team saw its season come to a close in the second round of the FCS playoffs as the Colonels fell to No. 1 North Dakota State, 37-13, Saturday afternoon in front of 15,690 fans in the Fargodome. With the loss, Nicholls finishes with a 9-5 overall record following consecutive trips to the second round. The Colonels were 4-4 before going on to win five straight games, including the openinground win last week. The top-seeded Bison improved to 13-0 overall and extend their winning streak to 34 games. “I feel like we’ve been in the playoffs for the past six weeks,â€? Nicholls head coach Tim Rebowe said. “These guys got together right here and decided we needed a chemistry change. We went on a four-game run to win the conference, get the automatic seed and pick up a good win last week. We just ran out of gas tonight. I think the momentum swings were hard to stop.â€? The Colonels battled the two-time defending champions for most of the day before NDSU reeled off 23 unanswered points in the second half. A Gavin Lasseigne field goal early in the third quarter were the final points for the Red and Gray.Â

Nicholls had a solid performance on the ground against the nation’s top defense, rushing for 171 yards. Julien Gumsrushed for 77 on 15 carries and Dontrell Taylor added 67 on 11. The Colonels’ lone touchdown of the game was a 25-yard catch by Dai’Jean Dixon, who also became the first Nicholls player to record 1,000 yards receiving in a single season since 1986. Dixon totaled 66 yards on four receptions, with three of the catches coming before the half. Senior quarterback Chase Fourcade was 11 of 15 for 94 yards and a touchdown but had two interceptions in the third quarter that led to 10 points for the Bison. After Lasseigne’s field goal made it 14-13, North Dakota State extended its lead following the turnovers with a field goal and a Trey Lance touchdown pass. Lance added a rushing score in the fourth quarter, and Dimitri Williams ran for another to make the final. The senior class finishes with the most wins in program history at 31, along with three trips to the playoffs and back-to-back Southland Conference championships. â€œIf you know anything about where we live and the culture they have changed, [this senior class] has made a tremendous impact on the school and the community,â€? Rebowe said. “There used to be times when we would walk in with Nicholls on the shirt, and it would be tough to go out and recruit. Now we can go anywhere. They know Sully Laiche. They know Chase Fourcade.â€?

Nicholls announces new scholarship for S.L. grads, maritime students

THIBODAUX, La. — Mike and Blanche Callais are honoring his grandfather with a new scholarship at Nicholls State University. The donation will create the Abdon Callais Family First-Generation Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship for Maritime Management. Mike and his wife, Blanche, donated $80,000, with a $20,000 match from the Louisiana Board of Regents, to create the scholarship. Callais promised he would create a scholarship when he ran for a seat on the Greater Lafourche Port Commission last year. He named the scholarship after his grandfather, Abdon Callais. A former trawler and trapper with little formal education, Abdon moved over to oil and gas in the mid-1900s. The decision paid off and helped him put his children through college. Callais sees this as an opportunity to help students, Nicholls and the industry. “My grandfather started from humble beginnings but he saw potential, took a risk, and

it paid off for him. Now, the maritime industry is so important to the economy of Louisiana, Callais said. “He had very little education, but he helped his children become first-generation college students. I want to help other South Lafourche youth be able to better themselves. Recipients must be: - a graduate of So. Lafourche High School - a first-generation college student - a Pell Grant recipient - enrolled full time in the Nicholls College of Business Administration Students in the maritime management program will receive priority. Four recipients each academic year will receive $1,000 for the year. Recipients must keep a 2.66 GPA and can continue to receive the award for up to eight semesters. The College of Business Administration offers the country’s only maritime management degree concentration designed and supported by industry leaders. For more information call 448-4411.

“What a Life!” is in an Ebook; Advent is a season to renew our hope In 2015 I published a book titled, What a Life! Daily Reading for a Holistic Spiritual Life. I ordered 4,000 copies and they sent me 4,370. I gave away several copies and earlier this year I sold my last book – a total of 4,310. The proceeds from the book when to “The Fr. Willie Todd Foundation” for the promotion of new ministerial projects in my diocese. I was still getting requests for my book from readers who wanted copies for relatives and friends. After looking into possibilities of getting a small number printed, the cost was prohibited. So I did the next best thing – I had someone put my book online as an Ebook. The Ebook has the same number of entries (370) and each meditation is on a separate page. The cover is a little different from the hardback. The following are the instructions for buying my Ebook. 1) Visit whatalifetodd.com. 2) Click the button that says “Buy the Book.” 3) You will be redirected to blurb.coms book sale page. 4) Purchase the book through blurb.com. The price of the book is $19.98. Proceeds from the sales of

the book will go to the Fr. Willie Todd Foundation through the Catholic Foundation of South Louisiana. The money from the sales will go to the parishes and schools as a grand from my Foundation. Please help me get the word out to potential buyers. If anyone has a problem or questions ordering the Ebook, let me know. My e-mail address is: wtodd@htdiocese.org. Thank you! Advent is the season that invites us to renew our spirit of hope. The Church wants us to strengthen our faith that God is not only present with us in every struggle and disappointment but will see us through any difficulty we might face. No matter what happens to us, we can say, “This too shall pass” because we know God is with us. It’s easy for us to fill our lives with anxieties, worries, and fears. We may have doubts about the future and our ability to handle what might be coming down the pike. It can disturb our sleep, make us sick and affect our relationships with our loved ones. In the United States, 18 percent of the adult population suffers from an anxiety disorder, and all adults have experienced some recurring sense of anxiousness. We are so busy worrying about what could go wrong that we lose sight of what is going right. God wants to give us peaceful hearts, even in the midst of turmoil. There is the true story of a self-made millionaire, Eugene Land, who greatly changed the lives of a sixth-grade class in East Harlem. The school had asked

Mr. Lang to speak to a class of 59 sixthgraders. He wondered what could inspire these students, most of whom would probably drop out of school? How he could get these predominantly black and Puerto Rican children even to look at him? Scrapping his notes, he decided to speak to them from his heart. “Stay in school,” he admonished, “and I’ll help pay the college tuition for every one of you.” At that moment the lives of these students changed. For the first time they had hope. Said one student, “I had something to look forward to, something waiting for me. It was a golden feeling.” Nearly 90 percent of that class went on to graduate from high school. These students knew that with the possibility of going to college, it made sense to work harder in the present. To move through life with a sense of purpose we need hope. If we have no vision of how life can still be worth living, then we surrender. We give up and live as though we were dead. (I have seen many “walking dead people” and I am sure you have too.) Advent is a time to hope in a God who cares for us beyond our wildest imagination.

Convention From 1-A

cil of Louisiana. “Not under the current political circumstances. Certainly not for 2020.” But Scott says PAR is focused not on a convention but on “constitutional reform,” which will “never be dead so long as there are serious problems with the constitution.” Holding a constitutional convention has been considered and rejected numerous times by lawmakers in recent years. Critics of the current state constitution argue it is a bloated set of statutes that limits the ability of state and local officials to prioritize spending and should be replaced with a shorter statement of principles similar to the U.S. Constitution. But others worry opening up the constitution could jeopardize provisions important to them, such as protections for education funding, the homestead property tax exemption, and the right to bear arms. Edwards cited those concerns to explain why he opposed holding a convention. “[The constitution] can be amended from time to time, and we can address those challenges, but now is not the time to be dangerous and to gamble with all of these things that are adequately and properly protected in the constitution today,” Edwards said during a debate with Republican challenger Eddie Rispone, who promised to call for a convention if elected. While a “limited” constitutional convention has been discussed, it’s not clear whether convention delegates would be legally obligated to stay within the stated limits. Alfred “Butch” Speer, the longtime clerk of the state House of Representatives, said the last state constitutional convention in 1992 was limited to fiscal issues. No one challenged the limitations, so the concept was never tested, and the results ultimately were re-

jected by voters, he said. “I think our staff even has different opinions on that,” said Rep. Franklin Foil, when asked if a constitutional convention can be limited. “I would guess you probably can’t limit it once you call a convention.” Foil, a Baton Rouge Republican who will move over to the Senate for the next term, is a longtime supporter of a constitutional convention. He said he doesn’t consider holding a convention to be a partisan issue, adding that Republican former Gov. Bobby Jindal also was opposed. The process works like this: Legislators create a bill that describes the convention’s subject matter and how the delegates would be selected. In 1992, the legislators themselves were the delegates, so the convention was much like a legislative special session, Speer said. If the bill garners support from two-thirds of members in each body – 70 votes in the House, 26 in the Senate – it goes to the governor’s desk. The governor could veto the bill, but legislators could override his veto with the same two-thirds majorities that approved the bill in the first place. So technically, the legislature doesn’t need the governor’s blessing to hold a convention. But in practical terms, the governor’s ability to influence the legislative process makes passing a convention bill without his support unlikely. “Unless we can convince Gov. Edwards to

change his position, I think it would be very difficult to get a convention in these next four years,” Foil said. Of course, the state constitution can be amended in a piecemeal fashion with the approval of two-thirds of each body and a public vote. The current document, enacted in 1974, has been amended more than 300 times, which is a big reason why many convention supporters want to scale it down. Legislators also could rewrite an entire article of the constitution and present the results to voters as an amendment, which do not require the governor’s signature. Lawmakers who want to unlock dedicated funds and give officials more spending discretion often cite Article VII, which covers revenue and finance, as a possible target. Foil said he expects lawmakers to discuss an Article VII rewrite. But if they go down that road, interest groups would fight to protect their dedications, which is why he likes the idea of a convention with delegates who aren’t worried about reelection. Scott, the Public Affairs Research Council president, said taking a possible convention off the table might actually lead to a more focused discussion of what Article VII should look like. “The fact that we’re probably going to have a pause in talking about a constitutional convention just means we can shift attention to what it is exactly that we want to do with the constitution,” Scott said.
