REAL WEDDING BUDGET KEY

$ = $10,000 or less

We know your #1 question is “How much does this cost?” so we worked with the couples to tally up their final budgets (sweat and tears not included!). Keep in mind that this total doesn’t reflect the prices of their individual wedding professionals or the quality of their work. Every couple has different priorities— while one might have spent the majority of their budget on a stellar cake, another might have splurged on their photographer or showstopping florals.

$$ = $10,001–$30,000

New York Style

Meets

London Attitude The DC metro’s most-talked-about bridal salon brings class, style and unbeatable service, delivering a completely new bridal experience. Zoya and Amy are a mother-in-law/daughterin-law duo from New York and London, respectively, and they perfectly complement each other with their no-holds-barred honesty, on-point fashion knowledge and their impeccably stunning gowns—each handpicked for their beauty and uniqueness. Their core focus is to ensure that every bride and mother of the bride/groom has an abundance of choice regardless of their shape, size and budget. They are a one-stop shop for all special occasion attire. Their collection has rapidly expanded and now includes designers from the UK, US and the Middle East. Zoya’s 30 years of experience also raises her customer service to another level. “Our dresses are beautiful, classic and contemporary, but not every gown suits every bride. Our job is to work that little bit harder to not just find a dress, but find THE dress, and we love what we do.” Zoya’s Atelier opened in January 2017, and has quickly become the go-to place for the savvy bride and those looking for something truly unique for their special occasion. Along with their barrage of 5-star reviews, they have garnered a following of loyal customers worthy of a store that has been in business for decades.

I’m all about the idea of a brunch wedding. Cereal and mimosas? Yes, please. (p. 114)

EDITOR ’S NOTE

Casual themes, like glamping, are very on trend. (p. 148)

If a white dress doesn’t speak to you, find one in a color that does and just go for it. (p. 38)

ON THE APP WE’VE INCLUDED THIS ICON throughout the magazine to indicate whenever The Knot app can help with a planning or inspiration task.

When it comes to weddings today, the rules are simple: There are no rules! You can get married on a campground (p. 148), wear a colorful suit or dress (p. 38), or host a brunch celebration complete with cereal décor and everyone’s fave breakfast bites (p. 114). In other words, the options are truly endless. For all of the brides and grooms out there looking for a rule book ( hi there), the thought of “anything goes” could feel overwhelming—and you may not know where to start. Whoever you are, and whatever celebration you’re throwing, begin by downloading The Knot app—it will help you determine your style, customize to-do lists and find vendors in your area. The next step? Look to your relationship for inspiration. Consider activities you like to do together, a location you frequent or a global tradition you both admire. Start adding these bit by bit into your ceremony and reception, and you’ll soon have a celebration that feels just like you.

WEDDING TOOL S

CONGRATULATIONS

you’re engaged! Here are the big tasks from “yes” to “I do.” Turn the page for more, including the tools you’ll need and how to get your personalized checklist.

BOOK A VENUE Search for the perfect place to celebrate, keeping budget and guest count in mind. Then set the date.

1

2

3 HIRE YOUR TEAM Research and book pros—anyone you have to have should be locked in ASAP.

NAIL DOWN THE BUDGET Envision your wedding and decide how much you want to spend (and who else will be contributing).

GATHER YOUR CREW Ask your besties to stand by you at the altar and in the months leading up to your day.

4

REGISTER & CREATE A WEBSITE Start a wish list and site on The Knot .com. Share the link so guests are in on all the details, like hotel room blocks.

6

7

22

PLAN THE CEREMONY Meet with your officiant to discuss the details and attend prewedding counseling if required.

8

9

COMPLETE YOUR TEAM Book any outstanding pros like hairstylists, makeup artists, day-of transportation or a photo booth for your reception.

BUY THE RINGS Shop for and purchase your wedding rings—don’t forget insurance (now it’s starting to feel really real, right?).

DCMDVATKRSS19_Sect_02_(017_032) [P]{DC}.indd 22

PICK YOUR WEDDING PAPER Decide on invites, thank-yous and other stationery. If you place one order, you may snag a discount.

FINALIZE OTHER PARTY DETAILS Plan your rehearsal dinner, after-party and morning-after brunch.

10

GO FOR FITTINGS Have the final dress fitting and arrange for suit or tux rental pickup.

11

12

13

CHOOSE A POINT PERSON If you don’t have a wedding planner or day-of coordinator, task a friend or family member to be the go-to so you can relax and enjoy the day.

BUY THE FORMALWEAR Shop for your attire and schedule necessary fittings—don’t forget accessories. Decide what your wedding party will wear too.

GET THE MARRIAGE LICENSE You’ll find this must-have doc at the state registrar’s office in the county where you’ll wed.

14

get married! 15

FIND YOUR WEDDING STYLE We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe, swipe, swipe on images in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your wedding vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). KEEP ORGANIZED Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. COMPILE YOUR TEAM After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad with personalized recs. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros, plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. MANAGE YOUR REGISTRY Now for the fun part: your registries. Family and friends are going to be looking to shower you with gifts all engagement long, so keep your wish lists full of options right from the app. Our universal registry tool makes it easy to add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between that handmade glass pitcher from Etsy and the badass grill from Home Depot. And if you’d rather ask for cash to put toward things like a home down payment or first-class tickets, register on The Knot Newlywed Fund. THINK OF YOUR GUESTS Trust us—your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels, directions to the venue and your registries (we’ll help you along the way). Then share it with guests so your phone isn’t constantly blowing up with questions. You can sync it with your phone contacts to save time address hunting and stay on top of RSVPs. GET YOUR DAY-OF TIMELINE As you check off to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed wedding day timeline. Share it with your pros, wedding party and parents. This way, everyone knows when it’s all going down, and you can focus on enjoying your mimosa and having a blast with your besties. >>

What should we put in the welcome bags for our island destination wedding? HARMONY WALTON: For tropical vows, definitely include some sun essentials. Travel-size sunscreen and after-sun care, like aloe and moisturizing lotion, are both useful items for guests. Then, throw in some beach-themed gifts to give everyone a peek into the fun to come. Sunglasses (even better if they’re emblazoned with your hashtag), flip-flops, tote bags and anything local you can source, like island rum cake or a voucher for a water activity such as paddleboarding, all do the trick. DIY your favors, like an infused olive oil, for a sweet touch

FA S H I O N

I love the idea of navy bridesmaid dresses, but I’m worried they’ll clash next to black tuxes on the groomsmen. Is this color combo a no-no? CARLEY RONEY: This rule has gone the way of “no white after Labor Day”—so don’t bother giving it a second thought. In fact, these colors can work for almost any type of wedding. Pair inky-blue dresses with classic black suits and rich eggplant florals for an elegant, moody affair. If your signature style is a bit more vibrant, throw in a pop of color, like flamingo pink or kelly green. For a modern celebration, brighten the palette with scarlet accents. Still not convinced? Consider choosing ties or vests in something other than black—that still coordinates with your wedding palette, of course—to lighten the overall look and shift the focus away from the tuxedos. And for your attendants, opt for a shade of navy closer to black than to blue. But trust us: You don’t have to worry about a color clash.

My family expects me to serve traditional Indian cuisine at my wedding, but how can I make sure I offer a meal every guest will love? SHAWNA GOHEL: There are a ton of fusion menu options that allow you to creatively incorporate Indian flavors with a variety of other cuisines—think spicy chicken tikka tacos or paneer lettuce wraps. Another thought: Since Indian weddings often consist of multiple events, compromise with your family by having one of the events feature a predominately non-Indian lineup. That way, you and your partner can incorporate some other favorite dishes into the wedding celebration. Food is one of the best ways to show guests who you are as a couple. >>

ADVICE

PLANNING

What are some other terms we can use for our wedding party besides bridesmaid and groomsman? BRIT TNY DRYE: Gone are the days of ladies on one side of the aisle and guys on the other—today’s couples are having mixed genders on both sides on their wedding day. You shouldn’t feel limited by binary titles—instead, allow yourself to pick verbiage that best suits you and your loved ones. You can use more typical titles such as person of honor, bridesman, groomswoman and attendant. Or try giving your group a fun twist with broader labels, like ceremony squad or “ I do” crew. Having a themed wedding? Incorporate it into the wedding party title. For a travel-themed wedding, try adventure seekers, or for a camp celebration, go with counselors. B EAUT Y

PLANNING

How do we choose the best signature cocktail for our reception? MARY CHATMAN: When picking a signature sip, you want to make sure it has great flavor and some personal significance to you and your partner. Tap a local mixologist to help you create a one-of-a-kind libation with your favorite spirit that guests will enjoy. It’s important to also consider the time of year you’re celebrating, so you can land on a drink that has the perfect balance of in-season flavors and colors—and is the right temperature too. When in doubt, go classic with a mojito, margarita or martini, and add a few ingredients to make it your own (think: lavender, herbs like basil or mint, edible flowers, jalapeño or fresh fruit like raspberries). These elements are also a great way to tie in your wedding colors. Then, just give your drink a creative name and you’re all set.

23% OF COUPLES HAVE A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL AT THEIR WEDDING

FA S H I O N

What kind of undergarments should you wear to your wedding dress fitting? MARK INGRAM: You should plan to wear the same undergarments you’ll be wearing on your actual wedding day. Many gowns today have a built in corset and bust cups (or they can be added), so an additional bra isn’t really necessary. Your undergarment needs will also depend on your body type, and the fabrication and structure of your gown. Ask your consultant for their recommendation before purchasing any items.

LOVE & LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHS

30

even your glass can add an extra layer of personalization

How do you keep your hairstyle intact at an outdoor summer wedding? BRIT TANY LO: For warmer temps, I tell brides to be realistic and choose a look that both complements their features and can withstand potentially hot and humid weather. For example, if your hair already doesn’t hold a curl well, ask your stylist if a half-up style may better defy the heat and humidity of the day. But if you’ve always dreamed of looking a certain way on your wedding day, there’s no need to completely stay away from that style. Your stylist has worked in plenty of conditions—they’ll be able to come up with a look that you’ll absolutely love and feel beautiful in from start to finish.

E XPERT ADVICE

all about bands

Mason Owen, Entertainment Consultant and Event Producer at EastCoast Entertainment, which has offices in Virginia, Maryland DC and more TOP TIP

A good rule of thumb is that a larger band will need at least three hours to load in, set up and sound check.

46

DISCOVER

BookECE.com @eastcoast entertainment

Should couples feed their entertainment? The band is typically one of the first vendors to arrive and one of the last to leave. It’s very helpful to provide meals so that the band can remain on-site and be ready for any last-minute adjustments. Be sure to ask for a final headcount and if any members have dietary restrictions. Can the reception group also play for the ceremony and cocktail hour? Yes, couples typically book a soloist from the core band for the ceremony, like the acoustic guitarist, and a duo, trio or quartet for cocktail hour. There are additional costs with each add-on, but most clients find it helpful to have all entertainment covered by one group.

THE BEST BANDS GET BOOKED EARLY. IF YOU’RE WITHIN A YEAR OF YOUR WEDDING DATE, HIRING YOUR BAND NEEDS TO BE A PRIORITY.

SET LIST FROM INSIDEOUT BAND W E D D I N G PA R T Y P R O C E S S I O N A L The Beatles—“In My Life” MAIN PROCESSIONAL Pachelbel’s Canon in D COUPLE RECESSIONAL Hall & Oates—“You Make My Dreams” W E D D I N G PA R T Y E N T R A N C E A N N O U N C E M E N T Beyoncé—“Love on Top” COUPLE ENTRANCE ANNOUNCEMENT Stevie Wonder—“Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” COUPLE FIRST DANCE Etta James—“At Last” FAT H E R - DAU G H T E R DA N C E Lady Antebellum—“American Honey” MOTHER-SON DANCE Louis Armstrong—“What A Wonderful World”

Is it common that a band will agree to learn new songs? Yes, most bands will learn at least one special song if given enough notice—usually 45 days—and as long as it’s musically within their wheelhouse. Some bands will learn up to three songs at no extra charge, while some charge a small fee to learn more than one. This is a great point to raise prior to booking since every band has their own policy. However, it’s important to trust your band to play the songs that they know will go over the best throughout your reception. I recommend giving the band an idea of the types of songs and artists you’d like played throughout the night. Then, leave the rest to them. What do couples forget about when hiring musicians? Many couples and venues forget to provide a green room, or break room, for the band. In some cases, groups will request two spaces if they have both male and female members. It’s a helpful luxury so that they have a place to change, eat and relax throughout the night. Power is another common oversight. It’s extremely important to verify with your venue that they can meet the band’s requirements, which are often detailed in the artist’s rider and contract. You may have to rent a generator if there isn’t adequate power at your venue. Most bands are booked for four hours—that includes breaks— meaning they perform about 180 to 200 minutes in total.

COURTESY OF EASTCOAST ENTERTAINMENT

OUR PRO

What’s the average price of a band at ECE? Most professional party bands cost $3,000 to $10,000. The price is unique to each band and is based on the number of members, travel expenses, quality and popularity. Our bands provide all production needs, including microphones, amplifiers, stage lighting and instruments—plus we have several smaller bands with singers who can double as musicians. I recommend these bands to budget-conscious clients because they’re affordable, professional and take up less floor space compared to our larger format bands.

THEIR STORY

57

As Vanessa Angelo (28 and a product marketing manager) and Michael Goldman (37 and the president and owner of a commercial service firm) began planning their Florentine-style spring wedding, they were drawn to bright colors. The couple especially loved a blue-and-red print by the Italian paper company Rossi 1931 that they used for an envelope liner. “Our colors really originated from the Florentine Lilies paper in our invitations,” Vanessa says. The event design took off from there, with shades of poppy, denim, gold and black all over their West End soiree. At the Fairmont Washington, DC, the couple put lemon trees in the courtyard, draped the ballroom in navy velvet and added their monogram to a black dance floor. The eclectic color combo worked: “It looked incredible,” Vanessa says. —Rebecca Dalzell The bride carried anemones, peonies, ranunculus, hellebores and garden roses.

VANESSA & MICHAEL

Vanessa’s mom made sashes for the flower girls by cutting up a Dolce & Gabbana scarf. The carrot cake with cream cheese frosting sat on a stand wrapped in the signature paper. At cocktail hour, waiters carried Florentine trays with a Limoncello-prosecco drink dubbed “La Dolce Vita.” A dinner of pasta and short rib followed.

58

Vanessa wore statement Fallon earrings and sparkly Louboutins.

THEIR STORY As a jewelry designer, Elaine Butcher (33) has deep ties to Charlottesville’s vibrant creative community, which was useful when planning her wedding to Brad Jaeger (32 and a corporate strategy manager). “The theme was handmade luxury,” Elaine says. “It was important to me to include my favorite businesses and let them do what they do best.” At a working farm with mountain views, the couple exchanged vows in front of a modern metal arch, built by a friend, then partied late into the night as a neighbor spun vinyl. —RD

THEIR STORY When she was young, Whitney Adams (31 and owner of a bridal salon) loved spotting the bees woven into upholstery and carpets at The Omni Homestead Resort, where her family has vacationed for decades. Years later, bees were a recurring symbol at her crisp spring wedding to Kelly Newland (32 and a director for a golf association). “I wanted to carry the casual elegance of the hotel itself into our wedding day style,” Whitney says. Soft stripes, a custom crest and white-and-green floral arrangements streamlined the look. —RD

Bridesmaids carried peonies, garden roses, elm and ivy. “It was important to me to have consistent colors and imagery without getting too heavy into anything in particular,” Whitney says. But a proper celebration was in order. Nearly two years later, they said vows at a lush flower farm in Virginia, where Paul’s family lives, and hosted a relaxed reception with a fire pit and Spotify playlist. “We wanted our wedding to feel like the most elegant backyard party you’ve ever attended,” Alex says. Paul’s mom delivered the finishing touch: homemade chocolate chip cookies. —RD

THEIR STORY “The tradition of wearing white didn’t ring true for me,” Heidi Nel (36 and a social impact strategist) says. Yellow better captured the joy she felt in marrying Tom Rosser (27 and a project executive) and the celebratory, welcoming mood she wanted to share with 155 guests. Marigold became the day’s signature color, appearing on Tom’s tie and the paper flower wall constructed by his mom. Since the wedding was held in the groom’s hometown of Richmond, Heidi brought in subtle references to her home as well, like a bouquet with a single king protea, the national flower of her birthplace: South Africa. —RD

Lauren and Steven exchanged vows in front of an arbor they built together, while guests looked on from church pews.

THEIR STORY Lauren Henderson (27 and a hairstylist) grew up playing in the trees around her house with her sister. “It was our personal wonderland,” she says. She wanted to re-create that magic when she married Steven Ganey (30 and a train mechanic) in those same Virginia woods. On the invites, a watercolor map of the property hinted at the dreamy festivities to come: a relaxed boho celebration with lawn games, mismatched china, and a spread of mini apple, pecan and pumpkin pies. —RD

THEIR STORY Jessica Lee (25 and a physical therapy grad student) and Mike Noyes (26 and a project manager) got engaged in Paris soon after college, where they met. Then they took their time planning a wedding at Mt. Washington Mill Dye House, a 19th-century former cotton mill. With a two-year engagement, “the process was much more relaxed and enjoyable,” Jessica says. Food was a highlight, including tuna tartare tacos, fried arancini balls and, best of all, French bistro roast chicken reminiscent of a meal on their proposal trip to Europe. “We fell victim to the wedding adage of being too busy to eat during the reception—but that just meant we went home with leftovers for days!” Jessica says. —RD

Paper airplane escort cards detailing the names of city-inspired reception tables were displayed next to a calligraphed globe that hinted at the evening’s subtle travel motif. “I definitely wanted the travel details to feel subtle and not too much like a themed event,” Charlotte says. “We really focused on what would make our wedding fun: good food, good wine, great music and lots of dancing with a few surprises along the way.”

THE WELCOME PARTY Inspired by Miami’s lively nightlife scene, the couple hosted a luxe pool party at the hotel’s beach club, where “Lullaby” singer Shawn Mullins performed a 30-minute acoustic set for the crowd. Fresh pineapple centerpieces, palm-print table linens and punchy pillows played up the tropical vibe, along with oversize pool floats and an ice cream sundae bar. “After the meal and live music, we jumped in the pool and partied until 11 p.m.,” Charlotte says. “There were definitely some hangovers on our wedding day.”

slice by slice

We’re serving up every delicious cake detail you need to know. BY ALYSSA LONGOBUCCO PHOTOGR APH BY DANA CUBBAGE WEDDINGS

Your cake is probably one of the most anticipated elements of your wedding—after all, who doesn’t like dessert? And while it’s bound to be delicious no matter what you do, there are a few things you should know about your confection before you sit down with a baker or start sampling frostings. Allow us to fill you in. >> 123

must-read wedding cake tips Keep these pointers in mind to get the tiered confection of your dreams.

1

Nail down your style, then choose your cake. You may love a rustic semi-naked cake, but if you’re hosting a black-tie ballroom wedding, the two styles may not jive. Before deciding on the look of your cake, figure out certain specifics about your event, like the venue, palette and vibe. That way, your cake will complement— and not compete with—your overall wedding look.

124

2

Consider the size of your space (and guest list). When deciding what size cake to order, first look to your guest count. Three tiers typically serve between 50 and 100 guests, so if your list is in the hundreds, increase your order. Second, consider your venue. Hosting in a tent with a grand ceiling? Add Styrofoam tiers (yes, that’s a thing!) to up the height and make your cake proportional to your space.

3

Budget for the flavor and details you want. Cakes are generally priced by the slice and can range from $3 to a whopping $30 per slice (and beyond), depending on the flavors, filling and frosting you choose. If you have your taste buds set on an custom combo, put aside extra funds to cover it. This goes for decorative additions too. Fresh fruits and flowers can often be applied for a small fee, while delicate, hand-crafted sugar blooms or intricate detailing will take a baker more time to create—and cost you more money.

4

Don’t forget to finish it off. Before your event, pass off your cake topper to your baker, planner or catering manager so they can place it on your cake for its big reveal. A classic figurine is a traditional choice, but more and more couples are using the cake topper as a moment of personalization in their day. Choose something that represents you as a duo, like a clay model of your pet, figurines of your favorite action heroes or a monogrammed acrylic sign.

DCMDVATKRSS19_Sect_08_(113_128) [P]{DC}.indd 124

have your cake and eat it too (even a year later) The 411 on saving your sweet for your first anniversary.

There’s simply no way your cake will taste as good after spending a year in the freezer as it does on your wedding day, which is why our first suggestion to couples is always to sneak a slice (or two!) while at your reception. If you’re worried about getting a chance to sit down and enjoy it, ask your planner or caterer to set aside two pieces for you and your partner to enjoy later that evening. Then, set aside the top tier for a celebration soon after, like returning from your honeymoon or your one-month anniversary and opt to buy a fresh version (in a similar flavor) to enjoy on your one-year anniversary. If you simply must adhere to tradition, tightly wrap the tier in plastic wrap and place it in an airtight bag before freezing.

top it off Cake toppers didn’t become popular until the 1950s, when couples in the US started using them on their wedding cakes.

cut it right Cutting the cake—and feeding your spouse—is a timehonored wedding tradition. Here’s how it should go down.

The ceremonial cutting of the cake has remained popular with newlywed couples. In fact, according to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, 85 percent of couples include a formal cake cutting in their reception. Even if you think you’re a pro at cutting sweets, check with your baker or caterer for instructions on how to make the first cut—they may suggest you cut from the bottom tier or help you avoid a Styrofoam one. Once cut, the newlyweds usually feed each other the first slice, symbolizing their commitment to provide for one another. In some cases, this is replaced by a different tradition: smashing cake into each other’s faces. How you feed each other is up to you, but remember—you don’t need to smear frosting on your new spouse simply because you think guests expect it. >>

fresh trends Some of the “it” ways bakers are creating standout cakes this year.

Edible gold leafing (!!) is a luxe touch

3-D textures Even basic white buttercream feels fresh when the focus is on texture. Get inspired by fabrics you love, like a cozy fisherman sweater or delicate Swiss dot, then ask your baker to re-create the look on your cake’s exterior.

126

Geometric detailing Interesting, architectural accents are in. Ask your baker to echo any modern ones at your event space, like playing up your loft venue’s ceiling look in fondant or using a wire geode to hold up two individual tiers of cake.

57%

OF COUPLES SERVE A TRADITIONAL TIERED CAKE

Marbleized exterior Work several hues from your wedding day palette into your cake with fondant icing designed to look marbled. The result will be so smooth and sleek, guests may think it’s the real deal.

Hand-painted patterns Delicate paintings (typically made on a fondant exterior using food coloring) can be pricey, but the payoff is big. Use them to mimic details like the colors of your grandma’s heirloom china or the blooms in your bouquet. Celestial details Look to the stars for the future of cake decoration— literally. Make this trend yours with a dramatic inky-blue fondant exterior that resembles the night sky or a goldflecked pattern of the stars the night you got engaged. >>

Staci Finney is a sales and marketing consultant at SugarBakers Cakes in Baltimore. It specializes in upscale wedding cakes that taste as good as they look.

Try playing around with geometric or metal designs—they’re huge this year. We’re also seeing a lot of colors on wedding cakes, transforming them into a fun decoration at the reception.

Your cake may be the first thing people see when entering your reception space, so you want everything to vibe. Plus, sometimes a more fun venue warrants a more creative wedding cake.

We get inspiration from everywhere—the paint aisle at Home Depot, Instagram, a venue or even a flower shop. Consider every detail of your wedding as a jumping-off point for your cake.

The Maryland state cake is called a Smith Island Cake, which is yellow cake with fudge icing. Our unique twist is that we add Reeses Peanut Butter cup pieces sprinkled in between the layers. Yum!

Here are the details on every delicious finishing touch.

italy

Buttercream Perhaps the most ubiquitous type of frosting, thanks to its delicious taste and versatility. Made using butter and cream, it can be flavored with various extracts, fruits and more to garner a different taste. Due to its ingredients, buttercream can melt quickly, so it should be kept out of extreme heat, humidity or direct sunlight until serving.

Italian couples opt for a millefoglie: crisp sheets of pastry dough layered with pastry cream, whipped cream, lemon curd, berries and more. Many couples even have a pastry chef prepare it on-site for their guests.

Ganache A decadently rich frosting with a fudgy texture. Ganache is made by combining chocolate and cream. Traditional chocolate will make it a dark brown hue that can’t be tinted, so ask your baker to make it wedding worthy with colorful fruit. Or opt for a white chocolate version, which can be dyed practically any shade.

Norwegians serve up brudlaupskling, a bread that became popular when white flour was rare in Norway. The sweet bread is topped with cheese, cream and syrup, then folded over and cut into small squares before serving.

norway

Fondant A smooth sheet of sugar paste, often used for the polished exterior it lends. Pros love that it can be easily tinted and molded, making it a no-brainer for cakes that require impeccable detailing or a modern, smooth exterior. Most bakers will ice a cake with buttercream before finishing the exterior with fondant, as fondant alone isn’t as tasty.

bermuda

Swiss meringue Icing made by whipping egg whites together with sugar. Swiss meringue is a less popular choice for wedding cakes, but it has a light and fluffy appearance that makes it look instantly whimsical and romantic. The airy marshmallow flavor means it pairs great with fruit-based cakes and fillings, like lemon, raspberry or strawberry.

Indonesian couples will usually have a cake known as kek lapis at their wedding. Made from layers of chocolate and vanilla cake and spiced with cinnamon or nutmeg, this sweet dates all the way back to the Dutch colonial period.

To-be-wed couples in Bermuda top their confection of choice with a small cedar sapling. The sentiment is said to symbolize the couple’s growing love, and it’s planted by the newlyweds following their “I dos.”

So you booked the venue and figured out the general vibe of your wedding—congrats! Now it’s time to find the right outfits and accessories. BY SHELLEY BROWN PHOTOGR APHY BY DEVON JARVIS

B L ACK T IE You locked in a grand location, hired the 24-piece band, splurged on over-the-top centerpieces and asked your bride tribe to wear floor-length gowns—all that’s left to do is make sure you and your SO show up looking snazzy. For the über-luxe event you’re planning, only a traditional tux and formal gown will do.

139

FOR THE BRIDE It’s your day—celebrate it. Make the most of your moment in the spotlight with a dramatic dress. We love a classic ball gown with illusion lace sleeves à la Kate Middleton, or a more fashion-centric style with a ruffled skirt or lots of bling. When it comes to accessories, don’t be afraid to indulge in more glitter. Pair drop earrings with a loose updo to play up the embellishments in your gown. Stash your lipstick, a compact and a tissue (or a whole bunch of tissues) in an equally glitzy beaded clutch, and step into some bejeweled heels or strappy metallic sandals for the finishing touch.

DCMDVATKRSS19_Sect_09_(129_144) [P]{DC}.indd 139

FOR THE GROOM Though you’d certainly look dapper in any suit, a classic tux will guarantee you’ll be dressed for the part for your formal affair. To keep it modern, forgo contrasting studs (those little doodads that cover the shirt’s buttons), dated cummerbunds and shiny vests, and instead consider a trendy notch collar and a self-tie bow tie. Opting for a sleek satin lapel won’t hurt either. If you’re more daring, try a tux with a velvet jacket—they’re all over the red carpet. Equally streamlined accessories, like understated cuff links and black patent leather dress shoes, complete the polished look. >>

Your wedding is all about a killer setting with a modern feel. Whether it’s a cool museum or an art gallery off the beaten path, your ideal affair is sophisticated without the strict formality of a traditional venue. When it comes to your look, opt for a wardrobe that’s as cutting edge as your celebration. Hint: It’s all about structure and polished details.

a bedazzled clutch adds a glam touch

FOR THE BRIDE

FOR THE GROOM

A minimalistic silhouette will work for your one-of-akind nuptials, without being too conservative. A strapless, satin, mermaidstyle dress is fancier than your average cocktail look, but still more subtle than a full-blown ball gown. Want to create an unexpected contrast? Consider a style with a cowl back or oversize bow on the back. Not only are they all over the runways, but they make for one heck of a dramatic exit. Finish off your look with sparkly earrings and a pair of elegant heels.

A classic black tuxedo might feel too stuffy. Instead, pair a charcoal or midnight-blue suit (darker hues are more formal than lighter ones) with standout accessories like a patterned tie or pocket square and statement cuff links. Another idea: Fun socks (like a classic argyle or a kitschy pattern) can bring in the theme and color palette of your wedding without overpowering the rest of your outfit. Keep your footwear simple—a pair of black leather oxfords or monk straps are polished without being too flashy.

140

CO CK TA IL If it wasn’t already obvious from the swanky invitations, rooftop locale, gourmet hors d’oeuvres and signature martinis, your wedding wardrobe will surely solidify the fact that you’re hosting a hip wedding. You can’t go wrong if you stick with fitted silhouettes and statement accessories for both of you. FOR THE BRIDE

FOR THE GROOM

Find a gown that’s dressy but not totally over the top for your cocktail soiree. Consider one of this season’s hottest silhouettes: a simple, fit-and-flare dress. A formfitting style with a plunging neckline or daring low back still feels classy but will also show off your curves for just the right amount of va-va-voom. Where bling is concerned, sleek ear crawlers or even a back necklace are fashionforward options. Complete your outfit with a graphic clutch (we love acrylic ones) and unexpected black heels.

Try a slim-cut gray suit for a look that’s sharp but still not trying too hard. A skinny tie works best with this style because it mimics the narrow shape of your suit (regular-width ties can appear too bulky or wide). You’ll look more pulled together if your tie and belt are the same solid color, but a fun, colorful or printed pocket square will give your ensemble unique appeal. Keep the modern look consistent with a pair of dress loafers. They used to get a bad rap for looking dated, but new, trendier styles are actually the perfect in-between shoe. >>

B E ACH FO R M A L Whether you’re jetting off to an exotic destination or staying domestic at your local seaside venue, you’re all about saying “I do” with your toes in the sand. And while you aren’t into the idea of wearing anything too formal, you still want to dress to impress. Relaxed silhouettes, lightweight fabrics and novelty accessories are essential when it comes to pulling off a beach-chic wedding style. FOR THE BRIDE

FOR THE GROOM

Dramatic silhouettes (read: ball gowns or dresses with long trains) and heavy fabrics aren’t exactly compatible with a seaside locale, but that doesn’t mean your dress shouldn’t show some personality. Beach wedding dresses can run the gamut from super-casual ones you could wear again to more romantic, Grecian-inspired gowns and lacy, boho numbers. As far as footwear is concerned, go barefoot to fully embrace your environment, or opt for metallic sandals or short wedges (heels will sink into the sand) for a fancier vibe.

Breathable fabrics like linen and cotton that will stand up to heat and humidity are a must where beach-appropriate formalwear is concerned. A darker suit could be too formal, but the same cut in khaki or light blue is a great option for more casual asual surroundings. (Depending on how low-key your wedding is, you may even want to lose the suit jacket and roll up your sleeves.) To take your wedding theme up a notch, opt for nautical- or tropical-printed accessories (anchors and pineapples FTW). For shoes, bare feet, sandals and boat shoes are all acceptable choices—just make sure you and your partner are on the same page.

142

DAY T IM E While a luxe venue plus fussy attire isn’t your thing, you’ve been dreaming of a stylish, backyard ceremony (well, at least something more intimate and homespun) since the second you got engaged. FOR THE BRIDE

FOR THE GROOM

Keep it simple with a short, midi-length or high-low wedding dress and let your accessories do the talking. After all, a flirty hemline is the perfect opportunity to show off killer shoes. If heels aren’t your thing, opt for embellished flats or more playful sneakers. For a whimiscal touch, add a birdcage veil or fascinator.

A light gray, light blue or khaki suit with a patterned bow tie and complementary pocket square (we love the idea of mixing gingham and polka dots) is equal parts preppy and laid-back. If you’re going for a slightly edgier and more personalized feel, consider ditching the jacket altogether for a vest, or adding colorful or patterned suspenders plus a custom lapel pin or bouttoniere— they’re all the rage right now.

If anyone knows shoes, it’s Tamara Mellon. In 1996, she left her post as an accessories editor at British Vogue to cofound a company with an East London cobbler named Jimmy Choo (maybe you’ve heard of it?). Over the next 16 years, she built one of the most recognized luxury brands in the world, worn by fashion icons—both real and fictional—like Beyoncé and Carrie Bradshaw. She left Jimmy Choo in 2011 and launched her eponymous direct-to-consumer shoe brand in 2016. Here, her tips on finding the best shoes for your day—without sacrificing your feet or the chance to dance the night away. >>

make it personal “It’s a cute idea to get a professional calligrapher to personalize the soles of your shoes with your partner’s initials, your new monogram or your wedding date.”

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING A BRIDE SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING HER WEDDING SHOES?

You’re probably going to be wearing these shoes from your ceremony to your reception, so choose a heel height you feel comfortable and confident in. For instance, my perfect heel height for walking all day is three-and-a-half inches, but it’s different for every woman. Go with whatever feels best to you personally. TRENDS? I love classic silhouettes with a modern twist. My Belle shoe is a cross between a pump and an ankle boot, and my Siren pump has unexpected PVC (read: clear vinyl) details—both are standout, nontraditional options in white. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR BREAKING IN NEW HEELS?

You should break in your wedding shoes at home so you don’t get them dirty or damage them. Wear them around the house at least a few times before your day. That way, there won’t be any unpleasant surprises, and you’re less likely to get blisters.

146

WHAT ABOUT CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHOES FOR VENUES WITH UNEVEN TERR AIN, LIKE BEACHES OR VINEYARDS. ARE THERE KEY THINGS TO LOOK FOR? I recommend opting

for flats, block heels or wedges—anything but a stiletto heel, which will sink into the ground and throw off your balance. I especially love the idea of a block heel with a platform in the front that will evenly distribute your weight and take some of the pressure off the ball of your foot and toes. This style will give you some extra height, but won’t feel like you’re wearing a typical high heel.

the year’s freshest venues

These new picks have some of the same perks as our perennial favorites, with a unique vibe all their own. BY ALYSSA LONGOBUCCO PHOTOGR APH BY SAW YER BAIRD

If it feels like everyone you know is getting married in a barn or on a vineyard, you’re not alone. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings study, the two locales are consistently growing in popularity for couples who are tying the knot. And while we love us a good rustic barn celebration or refined vineyard affair, we’re also excited to introduce you to the new kids on the block. Score one of these venues and you’ll officially be that couple ahead of the curve. >> Dos Pueblos Orchid Farm, Goleta, CA

Does the word “rustic” give you all the heart eyes? Well, you’re in luck because there’s a new “it” venue on the market to help you achieve that look. MAKE IT YOURS Go for custom botanicalinspired stationery to set the scene and give guests a sneak peek into your wedding location. smart questions to ask before you book These must-asks leave nothing to chance.

What’s the driving distance from your ceremony space? If you’re not providing transportation, figure out how long it’ll take to get from the ceremony to the reception. Ask what the traffic is like around the time of your wedding to ensure your guests won’t be stuck on the road for an hour.

Is the venue near hotels? This could impact your decision if guests have to drive a long way to get from their hotel to the venue and back.

How many people does the space accommodate? If you love the space but it only fits 75, and your guest list is looking more like 200, you have to decide if the venue or your guest count is more important.

164

What services do you offer? You’ll want to know if the venue has any all-inclusive packages for the site and food, if any rentals or pros are included, and whether an on-site coordinator can help.

Do you have any restrictions? Ask if there are any alcohol restrictions or permits. Some venues may not have a liquor license, and some may not let you stock your own bar. Same goes for vendors—your venue may only allow you to book pros from a certain list, while others will let you bring in whomever you want. Lastly, ask whether there are any décor restrictions, like confetti or open flames, or noise ordinances after a certain time.

DCMDVATKRSS19_Sect_11_(159_172) [P]{DC}.indd 164

The best part? Some ranch venues are fully functioning and can accommodate overnight guests, so you and your whole crew can call it home base for the weekend and make the most of your time together. MAKE IT YOURS Play up the surrounding scenery with accents that tie together the whole vibe of the joint, like terra-cotta pots overflowing with just-picked wild flowers and leather charger plates. For eats, this is the perfect time to go for high-end BBQ, so see if you can find a caterer who will grill up guest favorites right in front of you. Finish the night with dancing and toasting around a big bonfire. S’mores are optional but of course encouraged. SOME OF OUR FAVES The Ranch at Rock Creek in Philipsburg, MT // Hofmann Ranch in Castroville, TX // Bayshore Ranch in North Fort Myers, FL // Rancho Dos Pueblos in Goleta, CA // Dunton Hot Springs in Dolores, CO // Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, AZ // Ironstone Ranch in Elizabethtown, PA

If you like a loft, try a distillery If your style is more industrial than glam, a loft wedding is probably at the top of your list. For a similar feel with added personality, seek out a whiskey or spirit distillery in your local area. You’ll get a lot of the same lust-worthy industrial features (like exposed piping, brick walls and metal windows), plus the added bonus of a space that isn’t totally a blank slate. Translation: You probably won’t have to worry about bringing in essential things like tables and chairs and can instead focus on the fun stuff, like what killer set of flatware goes best with the distillery’s copper equipment. MAKE IT YOURS An oversize venue is the place to go big with high-impact design accents, so opt for a massive Lucite escort card display or statement-making suspended arrangement of branches.

Pair the raw feel of the space with hits of metallic gold, copper and inky black for a color palette as chic as it is sophisticated. At the end of the night, send guests packing with bottles of whatever spirit is the house specialty, customized with a signature wax seal featuring your wedding crest or monogram. SOME OF OUR FAVES Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, MI // Westland Distillery in Seattle // McClintock Distilling in Frederick, MD // O.Z. Tyler Distillery in Owensboro, KY // Union Horse Distilling Co. in Lenexa, KS

If you like a ballroom, try an old manor Couples looking for a classic or glam environment should look no further than an old manor or stately home. The authentic space will pack in all of the opulence of a traditional ballroom setting, while still feeling unique and special to your event. Plus, a private home or manor means you’ll likely be the only duo saying “I do” on the property, so you won’t have to worry about running into other weddings. MAKE IT YOURS Reinforce the refined dinner party atmosphere by sprinkling your reception tables throughout the main floor of the home so each guest gets their own unique dinner surroundings. Old homes mean lots of vintage fabrics or wallpapers, so opt for streamlined tabletop textiles, flowers and paper goods. Work in lots of candlelight to set a romantic mood and hire a string quartet or jazz trio to fill the home with live music. First, take our style quiz We promise—this is a fun pop quiz. Open up The Knot Wedding Planner app, or head to TheKnot.com, and spend a few minutes with your partner going through our style quiz. You’ll answer questions pertaining to wedding day specifics (like whether you’ll be hosting your ceremony in a religious setting) and get to choose from photos to help you decide on everything from the look of your flowers to the design of your tabletops. The result? A seriously valuable vision board that includes everything from helpful descriptors (like luxe garden party) to the perfect color palette, vendor suggestions and must-have celebration essentials you may not have even thought of. And here’s the best part—your board will live in your app and online all throughout your ON planning process, so you can refer back to it, tweak it or pass it THE APP along to vendors whenever you need. Cast a wide (inspiration) net

Tackle some of the logistics

Now that you have the helpful visuals and words to describe your ideal wedding day look, it’s time to do a deep inspo dive. This is the “dreaming” phase of your planning, so don’t worry too much about the cost of an idea or whether it’s a good fit for a certain venue— your vendors can help you figure all that out. Right now just focus on getting a better idea of what you do (and don’t) want. Instagram and real weddings (like those on TheKnot.com) are crazy-valuable sources of inspiration, but don’t stop there. Practically anything can inform your wedding day vibe, so be on the lookout for unusual sources of inspiration. Love a pattern you see on a dress while shopping at Anthropologie? Snap a pic of it. Touched by the sweet china pattern on your mom’s plates at Thanksgiving? Model your invitation suite after it. The more unique places you can pull inspiration from, the more true to your DNA your wedding will feel.

Nailing down certain specifics for your day can make imagining it (and executing it) much easier. Once you think you’ve compiled a good amount of inspiration, start to narrow in on a few of the most important factors for your day, such as which season you prefer to get married in, a general radius or location, and the size and formality of celebration that feels right to you. A lot of times, your season or your setting can dictate your vision, so you want to firm this up ASAP. Have your heart set on a beachfront wedding? You’ll likely want to say “I do” during warmer months, and a sandy spot may mean a more casual feel overall. Likewise, the desire for a moody, glamorous affair may point you in the direction of a fall ballroom wedding. Once you have certain guidelines sketched out pertaining to your whole vision, it will be much easier to find vendors, details and products to help you execute it flawlessly. >>

fun ways to personalize your day Make your wedding truly feel like your wedding with these touches.

The invitations

Think beyond just coordinating your paper with your color palette. Instead, include unique details as well, like finishing the envelope off with vintage stamps from the states where you both grew up, shutting it with a custom wax seal depicting your initials or incorporating a favorite piece of poetry onto the back of your details card for guests to frame.

DCMDVATKRSS19_Sect_11_(159_172) [P]{DC}.indd 170

Your vows

The promises you and your partner make to each other during your ceremony are the whole reason this party is going down, so put your heart into it. If you’re too nervous or shy to do anything super personal, think about including a special sentiment in your wedding programs instead, like additional vows, a favorite poem, quote or inside joke.

The menu

Serve solely local cuisine, or a certain specialty dish you both love (like French pastries, if you got engaged in Paris). Midnight snacks are also becoming increasingly popular, so keep the dance floor packed by having waiters pass around your grandmother’s famous chocolate chip cookies or paper cones filled with “Nuts for Each Other” peanuts.

Your transportation

Leave your ceremony or reception in a vehicle that’s totally #couplegoals. Take a ride in a vintage cab to nod to your love of New York City, scooter away on a super-sleek mint-green Vespa if you’re honeymooning in Italy, or say your final farewells to your coastal reception venue aboard a luxe sailboat. It will be a farewell to remember.

disguise these venue eyesores Not 100 percent in love with every corner of your reception space? No sweat—we’ve got a fix. THE PROBLEM

Terrible flooring THE FIX: Keep in mind, your dining tables will likely

cover much of the floor. But, if it still makes you cringe, price out the cost of outfitting the whole space in the same material as your dance floor, like hardwood or a chic checkered tile. Or, roll out several neutral carpets to create a blank-slate background fit for any décor. THE PROBLEM

172

Figure out your priorities The key to making the most of your vision—and your budget? Sticking firm to your list of priorities. Before you and your partner spend one dollar or hire one vendor, sit down and prioritize each aspect of your wedding in terms of its importance to you both. Are you big foodies who couldn’t care less about wow-worthy floral displays? You do you, and allocate some of your floral budget toward a delicious catering team instead. Are over-the-top personalization moments your jam? Then splurge on that custom vinyl dance floor and save on something lower on your “must-have” list instead. You’ll find your dreams of a luxe venue, Michelin-starworthy meal or high-flying performing artists are more in reach than you think once you know what you’re willing to scale back on.

Tap your A-team One of your biggest assets when it comes to nailing down and pulling off your wedding day style is—you guessed it—your kickass vendors. Whether you’re working with a full-blown creative team (think: a planner, florist, photographer, stationery designer, glam squad—the works), or just a few essential members, trust your pros to help fine tune your style. Think of them as your inside look into the wedding industry—they know what’s trending and how to execute your biggest ideas in a way that feels fresh and doesn’t break the bank. Plus, real talk: If you’re going to a pro and just asking them to replicate a look you saw on Pinterest or their Insta feed, you’re not going to get their most creative work or an end result that’s unique to you. You’re hiring your team for a reason, so share your likes and dislikes, then leave them to rock it out and do their thing. Trust us, they’ll rise to the challenge.

DCMDVATKRSS19_Sect_11_(159_172) [P]{DC}.indd 172

Gaudy chairs THE FIX: If you can’t justify spending to rent new

chairs, try making the current style work for your needs with a few hacks. Pick out a pretty fabric to have sewn into cushions, or task your florist with creating swags of greenery for the chairbacks. THE PROBLEM

Too-bold wallpaper THE FIX: Create another world within the room by

covering the walls in drapery. Select a fabric that fits well with your wedding palette, or choose white for a clean, neutral look. Then, have the venue hang it from the walls (and even the ceiling) for a cozy feel. THE PROBLEM

An oversize space THE FIX: Up the intimacy by using rectangle tables for

dining—they’ll take up more space than circle tables, which will go a long way in making the room feel more utilized. Past that, consider setting up different lounge areas to put the extra square footage to work. THE PROBLEM

Jarring columns THE FIX: Conceal any posts with a clever greenery

addition. Ask your florist to bring a few small-scale trees or amazing branch arrangements to help disguise and distract guests from seeing what’s beneath.

Play to their strengths

176

Don’t skip the engagement session Think of an engagement session as a second date with your photographer (the first date should be a get-to-know-you phone call or in-person meeting). This is your chance to get comfortable in front of the lens (it’s a bit different than snapping selfies, trust us) and get to know your pro and how they work. “Awkward always shows, so use this session to get out the nerves and figure out your best angles—we all have them,” says Elizabeth Fogarty, a fine art wedding photographer based in Washington, DC. Keep it casual by choosing one or two special-to-you locations, and ask your photographer to shoot you somewhere quiet if you’re especially camera shy. Otherwise, trust that they’ll warm you up and get you feeling like a natural. “Posing is very much a photographer’s job,” explains Jen Huang, a fine art photographer based in New York City. “There’s no need to practice before your session because you’ll want to be as authentic as possible. I try and direct couples so their natural moments can emerge.” >>

photography lingo 101 Learn these common phrases to talk the talk.

Digital photography

Digital is the most typical way of shooting. The biggest advantage? Time—depending on how your photographer works, you could see snaps just days postwedding. Digital cameras can shoot in very low light, and thanks to a display screen, your photographer can preview shots and adjust accordingly. That means lots of images to choose from when putting together your album.

Images shot on film will have a soft, organic quality to them, which may fit your vibe. But shooting with film is more work and, therefore, more money. In addition to the price of film, your photographer will also factor processing and development fees into your final cost.

Classic style

Like the ones in your grandparents or parents’ wedding album, classic images are those that stand the test of time—striking, gorgeous and a bit formal. These photos reflect reality, but they’re often infused with your photographer’s signature style or aesthetic.

Lifestyle

Think of lifestyle photography as the casual sister of classic photography. It’s candid, but with a dose of styling and direction. A good photographer will look for moments but also set the scene for a relaxed, approachable result.

Artistic style

Not all portraits have to be a couple in full frame looking at the camera. Think: unique angles, cool framing and contrast-y lighting and coloring.

To start, hire a photographer who has the same vision for your day as you and your partner do. Whether you love a soft, romantic look, covet crazy candid dance floor shots or know you’ll want formal family portraits, partnering with a pro who specializes in exactly what you’re looking for will ensure you’re already off to a good start. “Intentionally seek out a photographer whose portfolio is filled with the types of moments you want to see reflected in your own wedding photographs,” explains Kate Ignatowski, a fine art photographer based in Richmond, Virginia. Ask to see full wedding galleries (not just what they’ve posted online) so you can scope out how they’ll capture your entire day, and schedule a phone call to ask more about how they operate and whether they’ll do things like pose you and curate moments, or just act as a fly on the wall.

PL ANNING

Dress like you’re out on a date Choosing a look for your engagement photos can be almost as hard as picking your wedding day outfit, so focus on a coordinating palette of solids for you and your partner that you both feel natural in. “I always tell my couples to wear something they’d pick out for a date night,” Huang says. “Everyone has a different look and style—just be sure your outfits ‘match’ in the sense that if one of you is wearing something casual, the other isn’t in formalwear.” Worried you won’t know what to do when your photographer starts snapping? Set up a little wine and cheese picnic, go grab drinks at an outdoor bar or wander the streets of your city with ice cream cones in hand. Giving yourselves an activity will automatically make you more natural.

178

Your pro has likely been in the wedding industry for a while, so use them like your own personal vetting tool when it comes to whom else to hire for your dream team. More than any other vendor, your photographer will encounter every person involved in your day (from your planner to your florist and the DJ), so it’s in both your best interests that they feel confident with your choices. After bringing your photographer on board officially, provide them with a list of who else you’re considering to get their take before signing on the dotted line. While their opinion doesn’t have to be the be-all, end-all of whom you choose, it’s a good place to start.

Create a solid timeline for the day of “Allowing enough time for each part of the wedding day is essential if you want amazing images,” Fogarty says. To ensure your photographer doesn’t miss out on a moment of the action, pass them along a detailed outline of your day from start to finish. (Not sure where to start? Download The Knot Wedding Planner app, and we’ll do the work for you.) Keep in mind, if you want pictures of everything from morning mimosas to the night’s last call, you may need to work overtime hours into your contract, which can increase your costs a bit. Another thing to consider? Whether or not you want to do a first look together. “I always encourage my couples to do one,” Fogarty says. “It allows them to have a bit of alone time together while taking it all in—the wedding day flies by so quickly, and this is a great way to slow it down. Besides getting more portraits in, it also means you can actually go to your cocktail hour and enjoy your guests.” Lastly, ask your photographer to shoot all those amazing details you spent months dreaming up, like your escort cards or your invitation suite (be sure to get and bring an extra copy). “Also allow your photographer time to capture a few reception details before the room is flooded with guests,” Ignatowski says. >>

your picture-perfect kit Have these must-haves on hand the day of your wedding to set a pretty scene.

Ring box

Extra blooms

Ribbon

Sentimental extras

A beautiful ring box is a must for those up-close shots of your sparkler. Choose a color or style that goes with the overall vibe of your wedding, like a rich burgundy velvet for a vineyard celebration.

Provide your photographer with a few extra spools or strands of the ribbon used in your bouquet or throughout your décor. It will make a great addition to your invitation suite photos.

Invitation suite

Speaking of your stationery—bring it! You’ll want your photographer to get a shot of everything laid out nicely, so make sure you order an extra complete set for exactly that purpose.

Have your florist bring a few bonus stems when they drop off your bouquet and centerpieces for your photographer to work into styled photographs of your stationery or accessories.

Consider packing a few bonus items that are particularly reminiscent of you as a couple. Whether you wrote letters to each other your first year of dating, picked up a beloved brass figurine on a trip together or even want to include shells you’ve collected over the years, it’s a great way to add sentimental value to a shot.

PL ANNING

Plan for the light When plotting out your day-of timeline, it’s important to factor in the golden hour—that covetable time of day photographers love to shoot during to capture incredibly romantic, glowy shots. “Shooting in the best light possible makes all the difference, both for your engagement shots and your wedding day portraits,” Ignatowski says. “Start shooting about an hour and a half before sunset for an engagement session, and begin couple’s portraits about an hour before sunset on your wedding day, depending on how much time you need to allot.” Your location, venue and day-of timeline can all impact how much time you’ll have during golden hour (if any), so loop in your photographer ahead of your wedding to plan out the most logical solution for your day.

From the moment you bring a photographer on board, encourage an open dialogue with them regarding everything from where you hope to shoot your couple’s portraits to how much communication you want to have with them in the months leading up to your wedding. Remember, you’re going to be spending the most time with your photographer on your wedding day (even more than your partner, honestly), so it’s important that you hit it off with them. The more up front you are about your needs, the more you and your photographer can make sure you’re working together in a way that will surpass your expectations for the day. “I try to encourage my clients to tell me everything they need me to capture as soon as it pops into their head,” Huang says. “Figure out your priority shots—things that you really want captured versus things that are maybe a little less important. This way, if there’s a time crunch, I’ll know which types of images to focus on.”

But don’t try and control everything Listen, you’ve done all the right stuff, so once your wedding day rolls around, let it go. Relinquish control to your photographer and vendor team, and trust that you’re in good hands. Trying to get too prescriptive with your photographer’s work will mean they may miss out on more special, genuine moments, so just let them do their thing. “Trying to re-create that Pinterest-perfect image you love means we may be missing out on authentic moments, like your mom holding your veil or your bridesmaids tearing up,” Fogarty says. “Trust your photographer and their eye—if you let your story unfold naturally, your photographer will capture it beautifully.”

kelly & george Leesburg, VA

“Every year for George’s birthday, I surprise him,” Kelly says. “He expected something at our wedding, but not Apollo, an alpaca from nearby Butterfly Hill, which I arranged because George is Peruvian. I led George to the lawn, and when he took off his blindfold, we both cracked up. George was stressed because it was snowing in April, so Apollo helped to break the ice. In fact, he was probably our best-dressed guest.”
