Senior Bradford Shughart recently got to perform at district chorus, which was held at ELCO High School in Myerstown, Pennsylvania on January13th and 14th. He was the only one from Fairfield High School who was accepted to perform at districts, but four other students auditioned. District chorus is not easy to get into, but Brad was able to get through with his audition. Brad has made it as far as Regionals, but has made it to District chorus two times in a row,

going out with a bang for his last year at District chorus. During a concert on January 14th, the district chorus singers performed many songs including one of Brad’s favorites, Brahms German Requiem. Brad said that "the experience broadened my musical repertoire." Brad hopes to continue his music studies at Millersville University. Brad has made us all proud by representing our school at district chorus.

G ERMANY E XTRAVAGANZA B Y L EXI O GLE As many of you know, in the spring of this year, a small group of students will be going on a trip to Germany. From April 13th to 20th, these students, along with Frau Cline and some parents, will make their way through German castles and float down winding rivers. On their first full day after traveling, they will sight see the Niederwald Monument in Ruedesheim. The next day will be filled with a cruise down the Rhine River and a trip to St. Goarhausen Bernkastel, a small town in the mountains. The third day will consist of a guided walk through many historical landmarks in Trier, a look at castles in Heidelberg, and a lunch at Wolzburg, Frau Cline's hometown, presented to the students by the townsfolk and her family. After this monumental day, the

students will continue their sight seeing in Heildelberg, then make their way to Rothenburg for a tour through what is named "The Street Of Nobles". A tour of the Neuschwanstein Castle is on the itinerary for the next day. This castle was the inspiration for one of Walt Disney's castles, and something that many are looking forward to seeing. They will also travel to Munich that day for a guided tour of the 'Old Town'. On the last full day, the students will travel to Dachau, a concentration camp, for a tour of the memorial facilities, and make their way through more of Munich afterwards. They will be coming home the next morning.

So far, the people going on this trip have sold German food at Pippinfest (special thanks to Mrs.Wertz's husband for donating the authentic bratwursts), coffee, flowers, and Frau Cline, the group leader, is very held a silent auction all to raise excited to take the students on this money for their trip.

F OREIGN L ANGUAGE C LUB R AISES A WARENESS AND F UNDS FOR A RTISTS IN C ENTRAL A MERICA THROUGH “T HE Throughout National Foreign Language Week beginning on March 6th, the high school's Foreign Language Club will be selling handwoven bracelets, or ‘pulseras’ in Spanish, to empower the artists who make them in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Uganda. The sale is planned through the Pulsera Project, a nonprofit organization that empowers and educates young people in the U.S. and Central America. Through this sale, we will raise funds that benefit fair trade jobs, worker rights, sustainability, and education, while learning about the culture, lives, and struggles of Central Americans. The

life-changing trip. She hopes that the students will come back with a "deeper understanding of life in Germany" and "challenge themselves to speak German" while overseas. She is also excited to travel "in with a bus full of American students into [her] little hometown of Wolzberg" and see "the excitement of the locals when we arrive," as well as "seeing the awe of the students' expressions when they see the authentic castles...for real instead of on a poster."

Pulsera Project’s goal is to create a more just and colorful world by encouraging conscious consumerism and social enterprise. For more information about this exciting opportunity, please visit www.pulseraproject.org. See any Foreign Language Club member, Señora Phillips, Señor Diehl, or Frau Cline between March 6th and 10th to purchase your unique “pulsera” for only $5 to support this project!

A TASTE OF GERMAN BY LEXI OGLE AND JASON YEAGER (GUEST WRITER) On Saturday, January 28th, the Foreign Language Club members journeyed to Hagerstown to enjoy a traditional Bavarian meal. The restaurant, called Schmankerl Stube, was secluded on the corner of a packed street, hidden from the eyes that glance over the single, tiny door. But do not be fooled, this small door was the entrance to an experience full of authentic music, decorations, and cuisine. As one of the people who

went on this trip, I had gotten the Käseschnitzel, which is a pork cutlet cooked with cheese on top, and served with sauce, Spätzle, and carrots. Jason Yeager, a fellow companion on this trip, had gotten the Bratwurst in einer Rolle, which was a sausage on a potato roll, served with Pommes Frites, or waffle fries. We both observed that the food was slightly saltier than American food, and in some cases, spicier as well. We

both got the Apple Streusel, which was an apple crumb cake served with vanilla ice cream on top. It was easy to conclude that this was an extremely good cake right from the beginning. It was very rich in taste and melted in your mouth. Overall, this was an unique experience that many of the participants would like to experience again.

CHATTERBOX: CHIK-FIL-A VS. CHIPOTLE BY KATIE GILBERT I recently polled students on whether they preferred to eat at Chick-Fil-A or Chipotle, two popular restaurants. 60 percent of students said they preferred Chipotle. Only 40 percent said

they preferred Chick-Fil-A. One student, Devin Eiker, who picked Chick-Fil-A, said he likes it because “It’s American.” I think a lot of students chose Chipotle because it has more options than just chicken.

Chipotle also offers a selection of meats and toppings, which could be why so many students chose it instead.
