A WARM WELCOME Find out more about The Kingsway School Hello and welcome to The Kingsway School. I’m extremely proud to be the Headteacher of such a wonderful school community and would like to take a little of your time to explain why I think The Kingsway School could be the best choice for you and your child. Above all, I am extremely proud of the way that our school community accepts and celebrates the diversity of our students and the way that we strive to make sure that every single one of our students is supported to achieve their potential. Our fabulous staff work tirelessly to do this for all students, regardless of their personal situation or background.

Another thing I love about The Kingsway School is our outstanding teachers, who nurture and develop a passion for learning, delivering an inspiring curriculum. Because of this and our excellent facilities, our students consistently achieve well beyond their expected levels of progress - with many gaining the highest possible GCSE grades. As well as an academic focus, our school offers a huge range of enrichment activities and develops skills for life, not just for the classroom – this means our students leave as fully rounded individuals. Through a range of brilliant extra-curricular initiatives and hugely successful charity events, we provide opportunities for our students to make a difference to the world around them.

I would love for you to come and visit us at our annual Open Evening, or to arrange a tour during the school day to see us in action and find out for yourself how we make sure that every child matters at The Kingsway School.

“ Kingsway encourages you to shine – we’re encouraged to stand up for ourselves and what we believe in” Kingsway Student

TURNING POTENTIAL INTO REALITY Developing each member of the school community Our motto, which you will see worn on every blazer and appearing all around school, is ‘A Posse Ad Esse’, means ‘Turning Potential Into Reality’. Our staff are committed to unlocking and developing the talents of each individual member of our school community – this is what inspires everything we do at The Kingsway School. We have high expectations for conduct, politeness and appearance and students are praised and rewarded for good work and positive behaviour through our merit system.

Their academic progress, achievement and successes are also celebrated at every opportunity. There is no tolerance for attitudes which adversely impact our learning environments. If you ask our staff, they believe that the one thing that makes us most special is the inclusive nature of our school community - we are a truly comprehensive school where students from all backgrounds learn together.

Our student population is a fabulous mix of many faiths and heritages, those with special educational needs and those who will progress to the highest performing universities in the country. We are proud of the way we teach our students to respect others and have understanding and tolerance for differences. We are proud to be one community.

OPPORTUNITY Inspiring ways to learn One thing that is particularly special about The Kingsway School is that our staff encourage all of our students to embrace and make the most of every opportunity that comes their way. This is not only in lessons but outside of lessons and in the wider community outside of school.

“ At BASF we value the importance of building sustainable links with young people. We are actively engaged in bringing real life science to The Kingsway School and are proud of taking a role in enthusing the next generation of STEM professionals”

We have designed our academic curriculum with a lot of thought so that it is both engaging and challenging. It is delivered by our hugely dedicated team of over 100 experienced teachers, ensuring that every student is supported to make maximum progress, whether that is in creative writing, languages, drama, art or music.

The Kingsway School has a distinct commitment to promoting opportunities within the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), which are essential for life in the 21st Century. We are one of a handful of schools nationally – and the only school locally – to receive the STEM Excellence Award, through the Museum of Science & Industry. Our strong partnerships with the business community also provide fantastic opportunities for our students to develop their STEM skills beyond the classroom. As well as all of this, we are also extremely committed to the offer of a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities, designed to nurture hidden talents, inspire passion, develop life-skills, enhance wellbeing and boost confidence.

ACHIEVEMENT High aspirations, fulfilling potential Another major commitment close to our hearts at The Kingsway School is the desire for every student to fulfill their potential. Our staff know our students well and work tirelessly to help each individual to strive for the highest standards so they achieve to the best of their ability. That being said, it is of equal importance to us that we also encourage students to develop spiritually, morally, socially, culturally by embracing the best values of British society. We are enormously proud of our students! Not just because of their academic results but that alongside the excellent GCSE they achieve,

they also develop the skills and attributes that the country’s top employers, colleges and universities are looking for. We achieve this by delivering high quality careers education, advice and guidance, which is reflected by our GOLD Inspiring IAG Award. Whilst the vast majority of our students move on to further education in sixth form colleges, others go on to thrive and succeed in apprenticeship programmes in the world of work. Our main focus is to support and guide each student to find their best path beyond secondary school, whatever that may be.

“ The A level success of ex-Kingsway students builds on the excellent teaching that these students enjoyed at The Kingsway School” Ann Clynch, Executive Principal, Loreto Sixth Form College

RESPECT A truly inclusive school Alongside opportunity and achievement, our commitment to respect is the final strand of our core values that truly sets The Kingsway School apart from others. Not only do we promote respect for one another in our school and in our local community but we have unparalleled links with national and global communities. We celebrate diversity, while fostering an awareness of our common humanity; we encourage students to embrace differences and regard them as an opportunity for learning.

Furthermore, The Kingsway School’s commitment to promoting an Anti Bullying ethos was recognised by our Diana Award in 2016. We also teach students to respect themselves and their school environment. A fantastic example of this are our student leadership team who are inspiring young people who act as role models to other Kingsway learners of all ages. Of course, all of this means that we are passionately committed to inclusion and fully embrace the ideal that ‘every child matters’, knowing each child as an individual and providing exceptionally well for our most vulnerable students. The final element that completes our rich and diverse community is our designated ‘resourced school’, which means that we can cater for the needs of a small number of students with severe learning difficulties, whose achievements we are immensely proud of.

“ The Diana Award is a charity legacy to Diana, Princess of Wales’ belief that young people have the power to change the world” Diana Award

PASTORAL SUPPORT AND SAFEGUARDING Care and guidance to boost wellbeing Encouraging our students to have positive and productive attitudes to learning is another thing we do well at The Kingsway School. We are committed to providing our students with whatever pastoral and emotional support necessary to enable them to thrive in our school and fully realise their potential. From the moment your child becomes a future Kingsway student, our fantastic pastoral support will begin. Our highly experienced and well established transition team are able to provide advice and guidance to families throughout the process of moving from primary to a large secondary school. In Year 7 we have a wide range of programs and strategies to help our new students settle and find their feet.

Every child will join one of our six Houses, where they will foster a sense of identity via inter-house themed days and challenges. Students will also have daily contact with their form tutor and extra support is also available from the Pastoral Head of Year. As well as this, each year group has a Raising Standards Leader, who is responsible for ensuring that each individual student stays on track to achieve their full potential. At The Kingsway School, the safeguarding and wellbeing of all our students and staff is a priority and we have a strong system in place to provide support in this area. We are constantly vigilant for potential issues, whilst delivering ongoing guidance and emotional support within the school community. The one clear message here that we like all students to know: ‘There is always someone to talk to‘.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES Discover and develop your potential Alongside our high aspirations for academic success, we passionately believe in the importance of delivering education in its broadest sense. Through our diverse and extensive range of enrichment opportunities, we hope to give all of our students the chance to discover and develop transferable skills, which will help them to become successful in work and life. This could be music, where we can provide tuition opportunities, develop bands, orchestras and choirs and where students can be part of our famous and fabulous musical productions.

Or sports, where we have many competitive and successful teams and also offer a broad range of additional activities such as mountain biking, frisbee, basketball and cheerleading. We also love our students to seek opportunities to ‘learn outside the classroom’ and take part in activities such as the nationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh scheme, which encourages students to develop and practice leadership skills in preparation for life beyond school.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Our shared commitment as a school community We teach all of our students to appreciate their role in our broader society, encouraging them to speak out and become responsible citizens. A key element of this is our shared commitment as a school community to support those who are less fortunate.

Every two years, we are extremely proud to organise a whole school sponsored walk, which over the past 26 years has raised almost half a million pounds for the good causes that our students have selected themselves. We also have a sister school, The Kolweny Kingsway School in Kenya, which students become actively involved in supporting through fund-raising, donations, projects and shared learning opportunities.
