time to thrive

Theodore Hertzl wrote Im Tirtzu – eyn zo agada, If you will it, it is no dream. Or more accurately – if you will it, it is no fantasy.

Our beautiful school was founded on a dream. Dreaming has a place, but the King David founders knew that while the School was born from “dreams and a vision”, it takes hard work, dedication and strong values to achieve the wonderful thriving school that we are blessed with today.

Our goal at The King David School is to provide the best possible opportunities to support our students as they pursue their individual passions and aspirations. Our ambitious 3-Stage Masterplan addresses the gaps in opportunities and experiences needed to be filled to ensure that our students have the best environment to thrive.

Our school offers the finest education, equipping our students with the key attributes, skills and knowledge to succeed in the world that they will graduate into. Investing in leading edge facilities is vital to strengthen our offering of educational experiences. We are committed to maintaining our focus on fostering our students’ self-confidence and emotional intelligence, supporting them to strive for excellence and use their achievements to create a better world around them.

IT IS NO DREAM

Stage 1 of our Master Plan, the Sports and Health Precinct, will greatly enhance our students’ holistic educational experience. I urge you to join us in helping make our dreams a reality –it’s our time to thrive.

I have a passion for our school and a commitment to the vital investment in its future. I look forward to you partnering with us as we strengthen King David for tomorrow.

A strong, healthy body supports an active, enquiring mind. A

GRAEME SAMUEL AC Foundation Chair

I’m thrilled to launch the Time to Thrive campaign as we embark on making Stage 1, the construction of a leading edge Sports and Health Precinct, a reality. Providing appropriate and up-to-date facilities will empower our students with the skills and motivation to participate in physical education and, importantly, give King David a state-of-the-art centre that reflects our excellent sports and wellness programs. King David’s outstanding academic results place us among the top 20 schools in Victoria (2021 VCE results). It’s time our students are given the highest quality facilities and experiences that a school of our calibre should offer. This project will enable Stage 2 of our visionary Masterplan, the transformation of the RMC hall into a purpose-built performance space, essential to sustain our high standard of visual and performing arts programs. Stage 3 will see further development of the Southwick Mansion to increase classroom capacity for our growing number of senior students.

TIME TO THRIVE AND INNOVATE 0706

King David has grown significantly since its modest beginnings in 1977 and is today the only Progressive Jewish School in Australia. One great advantage of King David is our location, close to where most of our students live, and excellently served by public transport. Unfortunately, our prime location also makes it prohibitively expensive to substantially expand our footprint. Therefore, clever and innovative solutions are required to both make use of our limited space and provide the sort of world-class facilities our students deserve. The new Sports and Health Precinct ably meets these challenges.

• To

The new Sports & Health Precinct – supporting our students to achieve their best.

At The King David School we proudly strive: be recognised as a provider of educational outcomes which are second to none To deliver the highest possible standards of facilities and resources for our students To achieve our goals within a secure and responsible fiscal framework To nurture and develop each unique and exceptional child. With a single outdoor court and one indoor court (with restricted access) for 440 senior students and limited spaces for our physical educational activities, King David’s current facilities are well behind our competitor schools. The new Sports and Health Precinct will be an outstanding facility giving our students what they need to achieve their best. Our Physical Education program offers a diverse spectrum of curricular and co-curricular opportunities which enhance the education and wellbeing of the ‘whole’ person. It optimises the learning environment for our students and supports them in their personal development as they strive for academic excellence.

SPORT IS ESSENTIAL FOR ALL-ROUND SUCCESS

*KDS

Our survey* showed that KDS parents believe sport is extremely important for: Overall wellbeing Developing team & school spirit Fitness health Resilience, self-esteem and friendships

EMBRACING THE ENDURING VALUES OF ACADEMIC, CULTURAL AND SPORTING PURSUITS

We know that when children are happy and healthy, they do better in school. Nurturing the mental fitness and resilience of each student means they will have the necessary skills to thrive throughout their lives.

Moreover, the Australian Sports Commission^ has identified physical literacy as vital to leading a healthy and fulfilling life, integrating physical, psychological, social and cognitive capabilities.^

An active body produces an agile mind, enhancing wellbeing through releasing anxiety and stress. As energy and mood lifts, so too does drive, dynamism and ambition. A fitter body also creates new brain cells, improves memory and sharpens cognitive skills. Proving that sport is not just an optional extra for our students, but an essential for all-round success. Parents Survey 2018 Sports Commission Physical Literacy Report 2017

Recent evidence shows that participation in physical activity and exercise not only increases feelings of positivity and connectedness, but also boosts wellbeing and academic performance.

Conversely, inactive lifestyles in combination with external pressures can put a strain on physical and mental health. Depression and obesity are becoming major concerns amongst youth that need to be addressed early. Our school years provide a critical period for the reinforcement of positive health and social behaviours which continue to have enduring benefits throughout adult life.

The King David School is in a strong fiscal position having worked diligently over the past five years to reduce substantial debt. The School is thereby able to fund a significant component of Stage 1 of the Masterplan through bank borrowings and cash reserves. Stage 1 is estimated to cost approximately $12 million; the Time to Thrive campaign has set a minimum fundraising target of $5 million.
