WELCOME TO THE KENTON THEATRE WINTER / SPRING SEASON

This season is packed with new shows and some old favourites, across all genres. Shows to look out for are Watchers of the Skies – a compelling story told with music – and Speedy, a silent movie from 1928 New York accompanied by harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry. Dan Cruickshank and David Starkey will be here to give talks on the history of architecture and King Henry VIII respectively. We have a lot of fun comedy nights coming up this season, kicking off with an all-female line-up in This Show Does Not Contain Nuts. Tea With Oscar Wilde is on in February, as is the first in the new Comedy at the Kenton series which continues in April – we are delighted to have partnered up with Hotel du Vin for this, so you can start the evening off with a burger before the show. We are happy to welcome back several of our local

amateur theatre groups for their spring productions – HAODS, Henley Players, BYP and of course all the exuberant young performers taking part in Henley Youth Festival. For families with young children, we have Pirate Adventure in half term, with Detect Egg and A Strange New Space keeping the little ones amused in the Easter Holidays. For music fans, we welcome Ralph McTell & Wizz Jones in February, and 80s pop star Hazel O’Connor takes to the stage in March. We also look forward to Henley’s own Springfield Mike Hurst, the legendary Georgie Fame, Bye Bye Baby (who return with a matinee and an evening show) and a tribute to the legendary Neil Diamond. With best wishes, Zsuzsi Lindsay General Manager

RALPH McTELL

& WIZZ JONES About Time

Adult £23 • Senior & Student £21 MUSIC Best known for his international hit Streets of London, Ralph McTell has been a stalwart of the British acoustic music scene for over 50 years. A career that has spanned street busking across Europe, to solo shows at the Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall and The Sydney Opera House, McTell has a 50 year, 350 song career. Inspired by hearing Big Bill Broonzy and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Wizz Jones learnt his guitar licks from the likes of Davy Graham and Long John Baldry whilst playing in the coffee bars of London’s Soho in the late 1950s. He then followed the time-honoured buskers’ trail from the streets of Paris to the markets of Marrakech during the early 1960s and returned to Britain with a unique acoustic guitar style and an eclectic repertoire. With over a century of writing, playing and performing between them, Ralph and Wizz will be showcasing songs from their first album together, About Time, as well as favourites from their early busking experiences together in Cornwall in 1965.

Speedy 1928 Silent Movie

With Harp Accompanist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry

Adult £15 • Concessions £14 Harold Lloyd’s last silent film, Speedy, is a rollicking comedy offering a riveting glimpse into 1920s New York. Harold “Speedy” Swift is an upbeat young man who can’t hold a job. He’s wildly in love with a pretty girl called Jane, but Jane’s beloved grandfather is in trouble – he runs the last horse-drawn tram in New York City, and an unscrupulous railway magnate desperately wants the route. Hilarious highlights include a wild chase scene through New York City traffic, and an astonishing sequence set in Luna Park on Coney Island. (You won’t believe the lack of health and safety on those 1920s fairground rides!) There’s also a cameo by legendary American baseball player, Babe Ruth. Harold Lloyd is a master of laugh-out-loud ebullient comedy and above all, this classic film is a love poem to New York and one of the best surviving representations of the 1920s city. Elizabeth-Jane Baldry is a silent movie harpist and composer performing internationally. Her compositions have been used by ITV, the BBC, and by Irish, Japanese, Danish and Canadian film, radio and television.

After the Dance

MARCH

WEDNESDAY 8 – FRIDAY 10 MARCH, 7.30pm SATURDAY 11 MARCH, 2.30pm & 7.30pm

8th & 9th March & Saturday matinee: Adult £12 • Senior, Keeper, Friend, Child £11 10th & 11th March evenings: Tickets £14 (no concessions) DRAMA Written By Terence Rattigan, author of The Deep Blue Sea and The Winslow Boy. David and Joan Scott-Fowler are a married couple who are still trying to live the life of their (and the century’s) 20s, and whose ambition appears to be to treat everything as trivia and live hedonistic lives. David’s younger cousin, Peter, and his fiancée Helen’s outlook is more serious and focused on the current political situation, and they see David and Joan’s lifestyle as immoral and inappropriate. Rattigan couples the style of Coward’s comedy with unspoken repressed emotion to bring to life the devastating consequences of an illicit love affair between these two generations. Designed as an attack on the post first world war, After the Dance is one of Rattigan’s darkest, most caustic and yet touching pieces of work. Set in the year it was written, 1939, it provides a timeless observation of what drives us, what makes our hearts ache, what makes us laugh … and our capacity to hurt other people.

Adult £18 • Senior, Friend, Keeper, Child £16 • Student £15 TALK / LECTURE Henry VIII is the only king whose image we remember. The Reformation was the first Brexit; his ministers devised the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty, and his tumultuous personal life pitted religion against politics as brutally as in our own age of Isis. In this lecture David Starkey draws on his unique knowledge of Henry VIII’s reign on the one hand, and his insights as a leading commentator on modern politics on the other, to both illuminate the Tudor age and our own.

Time Zone Theatre presents

MOZART & SALIERI Adult £16 • Concessions £15

OPERA This opera follows the apocryphal legend that Antonio Salieri poisoned his rival and fellow composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, out of jealousy over his talent. Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) used the short story Mozart and Salieri by Alexander Pushkin as libretto, which also inspired Peter Shaffer’s famous stage play and film Amadeus. Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera is a character study – a close-up of Salieri’s tormented mind, torn between admiration for his fellow composer and his jealousy. In a new English translation and staged by an award-winning team, this innovative production will captivate its audience, making us witnesses, if not conspirators, of Salieri’s plan to poison Mozart.
