We’re looking forward to a season packed with exciting live events and exclusive warm up dates across our varied programmes. The Cambridge Comedy Festival returns in July featuring a host of new talent and opportunities to see big names trying out material prior to the Edinburgh festival. The summer season will also see warm up shows from Lee Nelson and Russell Howard before they head out on national tours plus appearances by Dom Joly, Simon Munnery, Imran Yusuf and Andi Osho. Following his two sold-out performances in February, Mark Thomas also returns with another chance to see his new show Extreme Rambling (Walking the Wall). Throughout the summer theatre season we’ll be presenting experimental new work and work in progress. Kicking off with Junction Sampled: Festival of Performance on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 01 May, a weekend celebration of contemporary work across the whole venue, it will then continue with

opportunities to see new work by Night Light Theatre Company, The Paper Birds and Bryony Kimmings. Music highlights include gigs by Warpaint, Tim Booth, Peter Doherty and Devlin in J1. As the city gears up for The Co-operative Cambridge Folk Festival a host of folk festival favourites will be gracing the stages of J1 and J2 including Spiers & Boden, Blazin’ Fiddles, Show of Hands, Eliza Carthy Band and Noah and The Whale. There’ll be a last chance to catch Salon Rouge before it packs away its finery and takes a well-earned summer break. Drum & Bass colossus Warning will be shaking the foundations with another epic night in June and also in the same month, resident mash-up night Boomslang will feature sets by Pendulum, Modestep and other heavyweight names for an mighty all-nighter.

Whilst she waits, this gloriously irrepressible Mademoiselle recounts the extraordinary love story between her - an eccentric, acutely myopic Parisian - and her shy, uptight beanpole from Staffordshire. From a chance encounter at Cheadle tennis club, their story takes us on to cosmopolitan 1930s Paris before their inevitable separation by war. A separation, which she hopes, today, will finally come to an end.

The Paper Birds present a work in progress sharing of Thirsty, a theatrical exploration into the upsurge of the binge drinking culture currently gripping the UK.

Throughout the summer The Junction will be presenting a series of experimental new work, works in progress and scratch material as part of our Festival Series. Artists will be opening up their theatre-making process, testing, discovering, collaborating, taking risks and asking for your feedback. We launch with Junction Sampled: Festival of Performance (Sat 30 April & Sun 01 May), a weekend celebration of contemporary work across the whole venue, and continue with extended scratch evenings from the likes of Night Light Theatre Company, The Paper Birds and Bryony Kimmings.

Featuring:

Catch at least seven performances in one day, all in the same place, from full length shows to short intimate works.

The show focuses heavily on creativity, imagination and vivid theatrical storytelling. Live music, magic and passion will fuel the production which is set in a Verona unlike any previously seen.

In December 2008, the Israeli armed forces launched a 22-day offensive in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian people living within Gaza were bombed relentlessly, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of men, women and children.

Bryony Kimmings has always had a rocky relationship with alcohol.

Throughout the bombardment Palestinian civilians lost their homes and their livelihoods. The infrastructure of their society was specifically targeted and for 22 days they fought to survive.

Of course this is no new conundrum, for years artists have struggled with their addictions and its effects on their creativity: Truman Capote, Jackson Pollock, Charles Bukowski…all case in point. So what is it about alcohol that moves artists to create? Is the work that comes from these states actually any good? Where in the brain do these brilliant ideas come from? How does the body cope with such abuse?

Al Nakba focuses on one family and their struggle to live through the onslaught. It explores both the physical and psychological effects of the attacks and aims to highlight and communicate the human rights abuses that the Palestinian people were forced to endure. Badac Theatre Company produces intense physical pieces of theatre that aim to highlight human rights abuses and what they actually mean to the individuals that experience them. “ The visceral power of the work is extremely rare.”

Unlimited Theatre take on teleportation! A performance lecture delivered by Unlimited Theatre’s Artistic Director Jon Spooner, explaining superposition, quantum entanglement and teleportation. With the science bit under his (and your) belt, Jon looks at the impact that this extraordinary technology will have on human civilization. All in under an hour! A post-show discussion will follow the performance.

Total Arts is The Junction’s participation class for disabled young people.

Working with choreographer Helen Parlor, the group meets regularly to develop technique, strength and stamina. The aim of the group is to perform as much as possible and JYDC members also attend shows and discussions with professional touring dance companies that are part of The Junction’s programme.

Directed by Amanda Kelleher, this regular Saturday workshop features dance, drama, music making, film production and story devising, all building up to the creation of real productions that will be performed at The Junction. We have brought together a great range of professional artists plus support workers to provide quality care.
