Welcome to spring at The Junction As The Junction’s 20th Birthday year draws to a close we’re looking forward to a packed spring season. The theatre and dance programme features Junction Associate Artists NIE and Bryony Kimmings (Total Theatre Award winner at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe), and Tilted Productions’ Surrealism inspired Masquerade. Much-loved emerging Welsh artist Hugh Hughes will be returning to The Junction for a four day residency; a retrospective of his awardwinning work plus some brand new treats created specially for the residency. Our popular family theatre season includes a last chance to see Gomito Productions’ festive family treat A Toymaker’s Christmas, a journey to exotic lands with Theatre of Widdershins’ Arabian Nights and Blunderbus Theatre Company’s adaptation of bedtime story favourite Elmer the Elephant. For the budding scientist in your family, Unlimited Theatre will be taking on teleportation in The Ethics of Progress, a performance lecture which will also tackle superposition and quantum entanglement!
We’re looking forward to a season of live music which features celebrated composer and songwriter Jimmy Webb, the return of Mercury Music Prize nominees I Am Kloot, White Lies and British Sea Power who are heading to The Junction following performances inside the Arctic Circle and atop the Great Wall of China. The clubbing calendar features resident sell-out Dubstep night Stink Like Sock, home to the whole spectrum of electronic dance music Boomslang, and the newest addition to the club programme Circus. Hosted by the Real Queen of England Jodie Harsh, and combining house and electro, some obscure but wonderful tunes plus a garnish of performances, there is nothing in clubland, or in the world, quite like Circus. Comedy highlights include The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church, a show written and performed by Daniel Kitson, Mark Thomas’ tale of his experiences walking the entire length of the Israeli Separation Barrier, winner of the 2010 Edinburgh Comedy Award Russell Kane, and Multiple Choice, a new show from award-winning stand up and Guardian Weekend magazine columnist Shazia Mirza.

It’s been a month since Stephen jumped.
Happiness is what it’s all about - how to be happy. Happiness feels like pancakes for breakfast, a squidgy parcel through the letterbox, new shoes, the distant smell of garlic and onions frying. Happiness feels like being the best, like winning, like getting an A, like people knowing who you are.
Amy collects her husband’s effects, the things he had with him gathered in a single box. There was no sign – no warning. As fractured memories of their last night together rewind, replay and unravel, she is desperate to find out why.

Joe and Matt are making a documentary. Whilst reviewing their footage they make a startling discovery that will take their film in an unexpected direction - the blurred image of a man jumping from the cliffs. Beachy Head is a powerful look at the ripple effects of one man’s decision to take his own life. Mixing text, 3D animation and a dynamic physicality, Beachy Head is the follow up to the award-winning Mile End from “visionary young company” Analogue (Metro). Commissioned and originally co-produced by New Wolsey Theatre. Co-commissioned by Farnham Maltings.

This year, following her very first STI test, 29 year-old Bryony discovered she had a common sexual disease. Not one for looking back, she was faced with the arduous task of retracing her sexual footsteps.

He’d never written that many letters, not in one go. In fact, he’d never written a single letter and it was taking significantly longer than he’d anticipated. He’d started, full of optimism, curiously enough, at 9am and now here he was eight hours later half way through letter 24. He glanced at his watch and then at the noose hanging over his head. Gregory sighed. Had he known how long suicide letters take, he thought, he wouldn’t have cancelled the milk for the morning. Described by Maresa von Stockert as her very personal love declaration to Surrealism, Masquerade is inspired by Freud’s interpretation of dreams and the Surrealist movement of the mid 20th century. Feasting the eyes and provoking the mind, six outstanding dancers will turn bone structures liquid and de/re-construct bodies and their secrets. Maresa von Stockert has collaborated with renowned SFX artist John Schoonraad whose delicately sculpted faces and prosthetics are brought to life by the dancers and become an integral part of the piece’s physical poetry. Evoking vivid imagery from the beautifully macabre to the violently sensual, Masquerade invites you to leave the rules of reason behind and dive into a dreamlike world that gives free rein to the choreographer’s imagination.
Join Bryony on a tour through her true-life sexual misadventures and self-realisations, told through vignettes of performance, dance, song and spoken word all gaffer taped to some rough chat and acts of slight danger! A funny, honest and unapologetic account of female sexuality in the 21st century for anyone who’s had a one-night stand and liked it, broken hearts in the search for true love and ultimately realised no (wo)man is an island. Working with Icelandic novelist and poet Sjón (lyricist for many of Björk’s best known tunes) they discovered stories, myths, songs and shanties from the sea, and letters from home. Using NIE’s trademark mix of storytelling, physical theatre, live music, multiple languages and a European ensemble; the show explores the pull and power of the sea, from both a very epic and very personal perspective. In November 2009, eight performers from NIE embarked on a transatlantic voyage aboard a cargo ship from Le Havre in France to the exotic Island of Guadaloupe in the West Indies. They were rocked by a North Atlantic storm, delayed by French dock strikes, woken in the night by the smell of the land and warmed by the Caribbean sun.

Trespass is a double-bill that challenges StopGAP’s five dancers to draw on their individual physicalities.
January 1945, Paris is liberated. Christiane waits at Gare Du Nord for a ticket to England to be reunited with her English fiancé.
200 years ago, far off the Welsh coast, one man faced an ordeal so diabolical that it would go down in maritime legend, changing the way lighthouses were run forever.
Working with Spanish-based choreographer Thomas Noone and Rob Tannion (Stan Won’t Dance) these performers with and without disabilities present two exceptional new dance pieces. Choreographed by Thomas Noone, Within sees a lone dancer drawn into her own imaginary world by four compelling characters. Touching duets and explosive movement play out on stage to an eccentric soundtrack of harpsichord clashing with Indian instruments, created by Spanish composer Pedro Navarrete. Splinter is an artistic collaboration between choreographer Rob Tannion, artistic director Vicki Balaam and the dancers, driven by Jim Pinchen’s thunderous Japanese soundscape. Thrown into another world, the company wrestle for the balance of delicate humility and creative conflict. Will the group subsist or splinter?

Whilst she waits, this gloriously irrepressible Mademoiselle recounts the extraordinary love story between her - an eccentric, acutely myopic Parisian - and her shy, uptight beanpole from Staffordshire. From a chance encounter at Cheadle tennis club, their story takes us on to cosmopolitan 1930s Paris before their inevitable separation by war. A separation, which she hopes, today, will finally come to an end.
Using original live music and little more than a ladder and a trapdoor, The Plasticine Men conjure up the confines of the infamous Smalls Lighthouse and the stormy companionship of its two keepers. Based on an extraordinary true story, an enchanting tale of sudden loss of life and drawn out loss of sanity unfolds between the flashes of the lamp that the pair must tend each and every night.

Britain is booming and Molly moves to London from deepest Cornwall full of naive dreams, high hopes and on a quest to make her life just like the movies. Blind Summit subvert and reinvent the art-form of puppetry. The company is renowned for making highly inventive and engaging physical theatre where actors manipulate puppets, objects, furniture, the set and each other. Using Japanese Bunraku three-man operated puppets, interacting with performers, to create scenes of humour, pathos and immense dramatic power.
Using luggage, maps and paper airplanes, the roaring twenties and the pioneers of aviation are remembered, when flight was exciting and we began to carve our way through silent skies. It’s an opportunity for artists, companies and collectives (across art-form) to share new ideas, early collaborations and take risks in a supportive, informal environment. Work often has its first public outing at JAM so the audience has a significant role to play too; the chance to share feedback, join the critical debates in the bar afterwards and help shape the direction of a future piece of work. 10
Led by co-Artistic Director, Scott Graham, this workshop will explore Frantic Assembly’s distinct movement style and approach to creating physical material. Participants will learn new devising techniques and develop physical performance skills in a creative and collaborative environment.

Following A Merry Little Christmas in 2009, The Junction’s Associate Artists Gomito are back with another magical Christmas story.
Genies, camels, flying carpets, and suspicious ne’er-do-wells – welcome to the world of the Arabian Nights.
Usually actors know what they’re doing but Mr Rossi hasn’t learned his lines and he doesn’t even speak English!
When a chestnut seller arrives in a small town, all the residents are happy to befriend him. All but a mysterious toymaker, hidden away in his workshop. Original music, puppets and presents galore tell a story of fun, friends and Christmas.
Theatre of Widdershins present three tales from the Queen of all storytellers – Sheherazade. This exciting journey takes you through roasting deserts, sand dunes, scented markets and fish-filled seas, and features puppets, masks and wonderfully atmospheric music.
As Mr Lynch shows him how the theatre works, light and sound effects suddenly become real and explode on the stage. They’ll take us on a fantastic journey until the show spills out into the auditorium collecting everyone up for a giant size instant photograph.

Total Arts is The Junction’s participation class for disabled young people.
Working with choreographer Helen Parlor, the group meets regularly to develop technique, strength and stamina. The aim of the group is to perform as much as possible and JYDC members also attend shows and discussions with professional touring dance companies that are part of The Junction’s programme.
This regular Saturday workshop features dance, drama, music making, film production and story devising, all building up to the creation of real productions that will be performed at The Junction. We have brought together a great range of professional artists plus support workers to provide quality care.

Gregory had 57 letters to write. He’d never written that many letters, not in one go. In fact, he’d never written a single letter and it was taking significantly longer than he’d anticipated. He glanced at his watch and then at the noose hanging over his head. Had he known how long suicide letters take, he thought, he wouldn’t have cancelled the milk for the morning.

Danish singer-songwriter Tina Dico is noted for her poignant lyrics and blissful vocals. The multi award winning chanteuse has toured extensively, often drawing creative energy from the friction of permanently being on the road. Initially brought to the public eye by Zero 7, she has since sold out Shepherds Bush Empire as well as headlining the main stage of Roskilde Festival. She appears as part of a tour celebrating the release of Welcome Back Colour, a collection of Tina’s most successful songs.

In his new show Mouthtronica, acclaimed British beatboxer Shlomo takes us on a one-man musical mashup using nothing but his mouth, a microphone and a loop sampler. An intense mix of storytelling and high energy genre-hopping voice-box-mashing human beatboxing, aiming to take the art of beatboxing beyond gimmickry and share the marvel of the human voice with anybody aged 1 to 100 in every corner of the planet.
Master Class with Shlomo
Carl Barât has proved to be one of the most important musicians of the last decade. First attracting the public eye as co-frontman of The Libertines, whose anthemic sound catapulted indie-rock into the 21st century. After the band split Barât formed the hugely popular Dirty Pretty Things in 2005, who enjoyed numerous chart successes. Now enjoying life playing as a solo artist, he received much praise on the release of his self-titled first solo album in October.

In association with The Co-operative Cambridge Folk Festival. Highly acclaimed songwriter David Rotheray is best known for his work with The Beautiful South. He is joined by Eleanor McEvoy, Bella Hardy, Jim Causley, Damon Butcher and Gary Hammond for this tour, showcasing material from his ‘modern folk concept album’ The Life Of Birds. Expect a night of intriguing collisions between Nashville and Whitby, with Rotheray’s country instincts blending quite naturally with the generally more folky leanings of his collaborators.

The Fiver Unplugged An acoustic night for new talent in J3
Neil Innes is best known for his collaborative work with Monty Python, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and The Rutles while his TV show for BBC 2, The Innes Book of Records has become a cult classic. Neil’s solo shows tickle the emotions with a potent mix of fine musicianship and enlightened lyricism, packed with sharp observations celebrating the absurdities of modern existence.
With three albums to date, a Mercury nomination and a MOJO Award, sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank have become almost legendary for their live performances. Empathetic stories of love, loss, birth, death, brawls and booze make for a rollercoaster ride through the human condition. It’s difficult to conceive how music can sound so traditional and adventurous at once. Please note this event takes place at St Paul’s Church, Hills Road, Cambridge. Doors 7.30pm

The Junction has access throughout the ground floor with wheelchair accessible toilets and lifts to the first floor levels. Dedicated NCP parking spaces for disabled customers can be found in front of the building and on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, which are both accessible via Clifton Way.
There is a multi-storey car park operated by NCP adjacent to The Junction which is accessed via Clifton Way.
