November 10th, 1983: the closest the world has ever come to nuclear war. Comedian JJ Walsh is headlining his local comedy club. As if his job wasn’t hard enough this evening, it turns out the venue is trapped inside a six-minute time-loop.

Saying sorry is conversational ellipsis Saying sorry is social glue We use it to make people like us

Written by Ross Sutherland (The Times’ “Top Ten Literary Stars”) Comedian Dies In The Middle Of Joke is an interactive play for ten people, where every audience member takes it in turn to play the part of JJ Walsh. Read the autocue…become the comedian…succeed where JJ Walsh fails, or die trying! R&D process supported by Hide&Seek.

This is just to say is a conversation about manipulation, Britishness, love and winning This is just to say is installation art, performance poetry and good company This is just to say is smudging its make-up, buying bouquets and screening your calls An intimate piece set around a table. Tim Clare: How To Be A Leader

Made In China: Dreams of a House High on a Hill

Dancing Brick: Captain Ko and the Planet of Rice

Metis: 195+

Time: 12.45pm Duration: 55 mins Age: 16+ Venue: J3

Time: 2pm Duration: 20 mins Age: 10+ Venue: J2

Time: 3pm Duration: 30 mins Age: 10+ Venue: J3

Time: 3.30pm - 7.30pm Duration: Open workshop Age: 10+ Venue: J1

With dictators falling across the globe, Tim Clare attempts to save the dying art of despotism with a leadership masterclass. Learn how to seize power, how to abuse power, and how to look good while getting shot at.

The girl stands shivering on the doorstep of the house high on the hill.

The plan for 195+ is to create a durational performance event where international commodities become the prizes in an explosive game of empire-building.

Using a mixture of stand-up, video, and unsolicited romantic overtures Tim also explains how he escaped a knife-wielding heckler, reveals the 7 Rules of Leadership, and pays tribute to some of history’s most influential women in a no-holds barred rap battle royale.

Is making the door look like the dark shadow of a man.

Captain Ko and the Planet of Rice is Dancing Brick’s response to our anxiety towards ageing, and our fear of forgetting. It is about recordings, memory, frontiers. It is a study into neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Semantic Dementia, and how humans cope when faced with these strange realities.

* How To Be A Leader is a work in progress and this will be its first ever live performance. “ Tim Clare has audiences hooting in recognition. Sublime” The Guardian

www.timclarepoet.co.uk

The moon is making the sea look like metal, look like milk

Captain Ko is an investigation into the effect Alzheimer’s disease has on the way the sufferer sees the world, using science fiction, mime, movement, an original soundtrack and video design.

Made In China invite you to sit around their bathtub and bear witness to a beautiful nightmare. Part narrative poem, part installation and part live performance, Dreams of a House High on a Hill is a unique voyage through the landscape of dreams. With music and lots of milk.

195+ takes inspiration from the physicality and atmosphere of competitive fencing. In this open drop-in workshop Metis will be exploring some of the ideas, technologies and audienceperformance relationships that will structure the eventual work (for 2012). 195+ draws on ideas developed in Simon Daw and Zoe Svendsen’s last collaboration, 3rd Ring Out (www.3rdringout.com).

* Durational open workshop (audience members can drop in and out as they please).

* A work in progress showing.

Tim Clare: Death Drive

Tinned Fingers: The Last Romance Club (ever)

Made In China: Stationary Excess

Foster & Déchery: Epic

Time: 4pm Duration: 55 mins Age: 16+ Venue: J2

Time: 5.30pm Duration: 1hr Age: 14+ Venue: J3

Time: 7.45pm Duration: 30 mins Age: 15+ Price: J3

Time: 8.45pm Duration: 1hr 30 Age: 12+ Price: J2

There’s nothing like seeing your dad have a go at an activity to make it seem suddenly uncool. Turns out suicide is no exception.

We are hopeful. We are looking for love. We want to get lucky. We want to serenade you outside your window at night. We want to give you our last rolo. We can’t sing but, for you, we’ll try.

Stationary Excess (Sometimes I Think I Am Helping But Really I’m Just Making Things Worse) by Made In China

“With Epic we will go on a quest for History; the big one, written about in books… The one with World Wars in it, with memorable dates, but also the personal one, the human one, the one you can relate to.”

Tim Clare’s Death Drive is the story of how a father-son suicide pact turned him from cynical loser to happy failure. With stand-up, poetry, ukulele, and a psychic horse. Tim Clare’s first book, We Can’t All Be Astronauts, won Best Biography/Memoir at the East Anglian Book Awards, and made Grazia’s ‘Must List’. He presented the C4 series How To Get A Book Deal, and has performed his work on BBC2, and Radio 1, 2, 4 and 6.

The Last Romance Club (ever) is an exploration of romance and loneliness and the ways in which the two are implicitly bound up in each other. It is about late night radio stations, long distance truckers and iconic film scenes. It is about notions of a romantic ideal and about nostalgia for the romance we have lost, or never had, and it is about trying to be honest, which is always harder than we expect.

Imprisoned on an exercise bicycle, a lone woman tells the story of an extraordinary man. Stationary Excess is a daringly honest solo performance that evokes the absurdity, pain and hilarity of being alone. A bizarre and intimate experience that will scream out to anyone who has ever loved and lost. Made In China is the collaborative work of Jessica Latowicki (performer) and Tim Cowbury (writer).

* A work in progress showing.

A playful and experimental journey through the past hundred years, Epic combines personal stories, video interaction, fanciful re-enactments of key 20th century events, and a cameo from Bertolt Brecht. Epic creates moments of intimacy while also connecting us to the bigger picture. Foster & Déchery make exciting, accessible, pared-down theatre harnessing the power of the autobiographical to connect us to issues of the moment, while placing this within a rich visual and physical style. * Preview performance.

“ the most compelling solo performance on the Fringe this year” *****

“ Tinned Fingers are one of the most interesting companies out there at the moment”

“ visually engaging, fabulously performed… the complete package”

The Other Way Works: Avon Calling

Time: 11am/12pm/1.40pm/2.20pm Duration: 20 mins Age: 14+ Venue: J3

Time: 11.30am & 1.45pm Duration: 1hr Age: 14+ Venue: J2 Dressing Room

Time: 12.30pm Duration: 1hr Age: 12+ Venue: J2

You are told that in 9 minutes and 39 seconds, you will be facing something huge - something you might not normally do, alongside people you may never have met. As the size of the task ahead becomes clear, time stops.

Ding, dong. “Avon Calling”. Join the Avon Lady in the cosy surrounds of The Junction’s dressing rooms for an intimate Avon Party with a twist. Have fun with vintage Avon products and adverts, test and maybe even purchase new Avon cosmetics and toiletries. Hear the Avon lady’s own story, and share your own memories of Avon.

JAM, The Junction’s experimental scratch platform, is an opportunity for artists to share new ideas, early collaborations and take risks in a supportive, informal environment.

What will you need to know about the people in this room to feel ready to take on the task together? What will you ask, what will you tell, and what difference will any of it make? This early work in progress uses the moment before a huge event, when time seems to stand still, to interrogate how we build teams, what our roles as individuals are within them, and where we draw the line between the two.

Avon Calling is a new piece in development from The Other Way Works, a Birmingham-based theatre company that creates theatre that draws the audience into the very heart of the experience.

non zero one are supported artists of The Basement, Brighton.

Created by Katie Day and Louise Platt, and performed by Louise Platt. Mentoring by Alexander Kelly, Third Angel. Commissioned by mac. Supported by Arts Council England. Development supported by Pilot Nights and Warwick Arts Centre.

“ a dynamic young company that is successfully exploring the possibilities of what theatre can and might be.”

Evening Standard on none zero one’s would like to meet at The Barbican

Work often has its first public outing at JAM, so the audience has a significant role to play too; the chance to share feedback, join in critical debates and help shape the direction of a future piece of work. This special afternoon JAM will feature: Maison Foo: The Double Act and the Shoemaker After a successful sell out run at Edinburgh festival last year, Maison Foo join us to scratch, sniff and itch their way into a new visual fairytale for grown ups, based (very loosely) around a retelling of classic fairytale The Elves and the Shoemaker. Equipped with: A pile of objects, 2 pairs of hands, a fascination with double acts and an obsession with shoes, Maison Foo invite you to be part of this exciting and no doubt chaotic experiment!

Molly Naylor: Crap Wedding Photo A work in progress sharing of Molly Naylor’s new work in the early stages of its development. Crap Wedding Photo is a storytelling show about fear, family and purpose. Framed by an impending wedding, it shares interlinked stories about three generations of a family, and their fears. Each must conquer a fear in order for the wedding to go ahead. Meet Harry, the bride’s 7-year-old step-brother who’s scared of sleep, the sea, and the school bully. Meet Jack, the father of the bride, terrified of public speaking and death in equal measures. Meet Eliza, the bride… who has just realized she is afraid of marriage. www.mollynaylor.com Dan Canham: 30 Cecil Street In 2009 Dan Canham (Kneehigh, DV8, Punchdrunk, Fabulous Beast) made a film in a rotting, dilapidated theatre in Limerick, Ireland. Using that film as source material, this brand new piece of dance-theatre sees a lone figure stream through fragments of memories in a series of poignant and evocative dances. With an original soundtrack made up of interviews and found sounds, this poetic and moving piece looks at the life of a once-mighty building and what is left when a theatre closes its doors to the public. One of a kind performance artist, traveller and all round professional eccentric Bill Aitchison has been taking the citizenship test for the last three months… in Xiamen, South China.

Greg has been singing, to everyone, everywhere. Where he would speak he must sing. He’s recorded his encounters and mashed them up to create a slippery world between what is meant and what is expressed, what is created and what is found.

Using a video from the last day she lived in Canada five years ago, Deborah Pearson tries to re-insert herself in the frame.

Alicja Rogalska

Kevin Edwards

J U N C T I O N S ampled — F E S T I V A L O F P E R F O R M A N C E

Fresh off the plane and still swimming through jet lag, he will give a new performance of imperfect translations, misunderstandings and insights into how the British (i.e. Bill) come over to the good citizens of Xiamen. Expect a humorous and insightful take on identity confusions in the 21st century.

It’s a fantastically odd and moving journey from place to place, voice to voice that slips between reality and imagination, and light social self-harm. It’s a peculiarly playful and dangerous one man opera performed with utterly offhand conviction.

Like You Were Before is a lament to the fact that time can’t be put on pause, to the tender fragility of magnetic-media and mental storage. This is a show for people who sit backwards on trains, who re-read emails from over two years ago, and who hate seeing anything new or unfamiliar when they visit their hometown. This is a show about moving forward backwards.

Supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Commissioned by Chester Performs and developed at The Junction, Brighton Dome and Festival, New Art Exchange (Nottingham) and Lakeside Arts Centre (Nottingham).

Supported by British Council China and Arts Council England.

Greg McLaren has been in residence at The Junction and across the streets of Cambridge as part of the research and development process for Doris Day Can Fuck Off.

This is a story about the pictures that tell us how to live and love. This is a story about a girl and a boy very much in love. This show’s scary and it’s gorgeous. We’re going to pretend to be other people, and we’re going to be ourselves. There’s a live band, there’s singing, there’s dancing.

This work in progress sharing of Night Light Theatre’s Romeo and Juliet will provide an insight into the forthcoming production at an unfinished stage…

The Paper Birds present a work in progress sharing of Thirsty, a theatrical exploration into the upsurge of the binge drinking culture currently gripping the UK.

An ensemble of people and life sized puppets set out to inspire, excite and entertain in this new version of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece.

Thirsty looks past the facts and figures of binge drinking to the faces and voices of women admitted into A&E in the dead of the night and of the lone girls sitting on pavements unable to stand.

In December 2008, the Israeli armed forces launched a 22-day offensive in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian people living within Gaza were bombed relentlessly, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of men, women and children.

Bryony Kimmings has always had a rocky relationship with alcohol. It seems that drinking is intrinsically linked to her confidence and self worth as an artist and is to blame for some of her most genius as well as her most hideous creations.

Throughout the bombardment Palestinian civilians lost their homes and their livelihoods. The infrastructure of their society was specifically targeted and for 22 days they fought to survive.

Of course this is no new conundrum, for years artists have struggled with their addictions and its effects on their creativity: Truman Capote, Jackson Pollock, Charles Bukowski…all case in point.

Al Nakba focuses on one family and their struggle to live through the onslaught. It explores both the physical and psychological effects of the attacks and aims to highlight and communicate the human rights abuses that the Palestinian people were forced to endure.

So what is it about alcohol that moves artists to create? Is the work that comes from these states actually any good? Where in the brain do these brilliant ideas come from? How does the body cope with such abuse?

The show focuses heavily on creativity, imagination and vivid theatrical storytelling. Live music, magic and passion will fuel the production which is set in a Verona unlike any previously seen. Night Light Theatre welcome feedback from the audience following this sharing of Romeo and Juliet. Rich Rusk, Night Light Theatre’s Artistic Director is a Junction Associate Artist.

Thirsty explores the stories and social repercussions of lost memories and gained traumas. This is the tale of bruised knees, uncontrollable laughter, forgotten moments and urine stained beds…a story that repeats itself across the UK and beyond every Friday night.

Badac Theatre Company produces intense physical pieces of theatre that aim to highlight human rights abuses and what they actually mean to the individuals that experience them.

Research and Development process supported by The Junction.

“The Paper Birds proves itself an accomplished company, capable of devising highly inventive and relevant work.”

“ The visceral power of the work is extremely rare.”
