Who Do I Want To Work For? About The Top Companies Rankings The big question facing graduates when it comes to job hunting is “who do I want to work for?”. There are a lot of employers out there who are desperate to hire talented graduates like you and it can be hard to pick through them and work out which are best ones to join. This 2015/16 guide is our 5th year of presenting the ones who are actually the best to work for – based on reviews and ratings given to them by their own graduate employees from the last three years. Don’t be fooled – there are plenty of companies out there who have great brand recognition, very large marketing budgets or who take on lots and lots of graduates (and so can spend more money on advertising in total) but that doesn’t mean that they are necessarily great places to actually work. Meanwhile there are hundreds of employers who you may have never even heard of, perhaps because they don’t spend as much money on advertising or don’t have a familiar brand name, that actually give their graduates a wonderful working experience, outstanding career progression, an enjoyable role and all the great things you want from a graduate job. When you are deciding who you want to work for, we strongly recommend that it is the ones who are actually great to work for, rather than just the ones who are best known, that you should choose. That’s why we produce the Top Companies For Graduates To Work For rankings every year, so you can see which companies are the best ones to actually work for. TheJobCrowd is the ‘Tripadvisor’ of graduate jobs – thousands of graduates at several hundred graduate employers write anonymous job reviews for us every year. All of these reviews are displayed on www.TheJobCrowd.com, including crucial information such as the best & worst things about working for the company, the salary level and application & interview tips. In their reviews, graduate employees rate fourteen key aspects of their experience – such as Work/Life Balance, Career Progression and what the Training is like – so as to give a clear picture of exactly how happy they are to work for their employer. In this guide, we rank the companies in order of the overall ratings that they have been given by their graduate employees from the last three years. The rankings therefore show you who the very best companies for graduates to work for are so that you can choose some genuinely great companies to work for!

The Top Companies

How To Use The Guide The Top Companies results are based on the opinions of graduate-level employees working at each employer. Several thousand graduate employees write anonymous job reviews on TheJobCrowd every year. As well as writing full reviews for their company, which you can read on TheJobCrowd. com, each reviewer rates their satisfaction with fourteen key attributes of their employer.

These are:

Benefits

Career Progression

Colleagues

Company Culture

Enjoyment of Their Role

Ethical & Environmental Awareness

International Opportunities

Location

Management

Responsibility

Salary

Support

Training

Work/Life Balance

The rankings are entirely based on the average score across all of the reviews for each employer. There are two Top 100 Companies For Graduates To Work For lists – one for companies who hire less than 30 graduates per year, and one for those who hire 30 or more. The survey approach can favour companies with smaller intakes (and thus fewer reviewers), so we split the companies into two lists to ensure it is as fair as possible.

Every one of the 200 companies in the rankings has an entry on pages 9 to 27. There are 18 industry sections in the guide. Each industry has an infographic showing some of the most useful and most interesting data about the sector that we have collected from all the reviews – such as the average salary and the main factors that graduates in that sector considered when choosing their employer. The infographic page also lists the companies from that industry who have made it into this year’s rankings. Within each industry section, you can then find the adverts and double page write ups for companies within that sector, so you can get more information on some of the very best employers in the industry. The write ups are written by us so that you can gain a really great understanding of what makes that company so great to work for.

Stand Out From The Crowd by

Top tips on how to do a great application and nail your interview from Sharon Goymer, Resourcing Manager – Entry Level Talent Programmes, National Grid It’s well known that top graduate employers receive plenty of applications for each place that they have available so it’s no surprise that the questions “how do I stand out in my application?” and “what should I do to stand out in an interview?” are two of the most common ones that we hear from graduates at TheJobCrowd. As a result we have a whole section of our site dedicated to Application and Interview Tips. We collect insider advice for every company on both the application and interview from graduates who have already been through the process and have landed the job. We also wanted to get the views of those on the other side – the assessors and interviewers – so we asked Sharon Goymet from National Grid to share her top tips.

Top tips for Applications: Take your time. This is a great opportunity to sell yourself so take the time to complete the application form, we often spend more time researching a holiday than we do completing an application form! Don’t do it in one go, save and return to it many times until you are happy with the content. Preparation is key. Think of a good example from your past against each competency for the role. Use the STARR model to help you provide the evidence (S – situation, T – task, A – action, R – result, Rreview). Spend time doing this thoroughly now and you will probably use this information again and again with other applications too. Honesty is a must, a tiny white lie during the interview will make us doubt everything you say. Research the role and the company. Make sure you are clear what the company does and what they are offering you. You should approach the research in the same way you would for a project at University. You don’t need to have facts and figures to hand but you should be able to talk in general terms about the company’s values and strategy.

The Top Companies

Don’t exclude information. We want to know what you have achieved so far and most importantly, what you have learned and gained from the experience. This can be from any aspect of life (e.g. school, college, sporting, work experience, social action or volunteering opportunities etc.). Demonstrate interest and passion. Interviewers will forgive candidates many things if they show a real passion and interest for the role or company.

Top tips for Interviews: Smile and be positive and confident. Interviews can seem scary but you need to remember that if you’ve got as far as an interview then we already think you are great – all you need to do is just show us. Plan your journey. Don’t turn up late, hot and bothered. Dress for success. You will be surprised how confident this makes you feel and it also shows the company that you are taking the interview and opportunity seriously. Be yourself. Don’t try to second guess what the company is looking for or take on a role that isn’t you; you will only mask your natural qualities and strengths. Competency based interviews. They sound daunting but all it really means is giving a true and honest example from your past of when you had to e.g. solve a problem, plan a project, communicate in a team etc. Find out the competencies for the role in advance of the interview and then you can think and prepare some examples. Taking a list of key words into the interview will help you recall them immediately.

Matt Hateley I started with National Grid in 2009 and spent 18 months on the Graduate Development Programme – I’ve had lots of great training and lots of development opportunities. I’ve travelled all overr the country on different courses, meeting new people and networking. I then spent a year in myy first post and afterr two and a half years I was in a management position.

“ My quick transition from graduate to managing other people and leading a team shows how much commitment National Grid has to developing its people”

Matt Hateley, Investment Planning and Performance Manager

My quick transition from graduate to managing otherr people and leading a team shows how much commitment National Grid has to developing its people. Every day is different and it’s ’ always incredibly busy, but fun. I think that’s one off the key messages – it’s hard work but it’s a great place to be. The atmosphere is really good, the people are nice, and the job’s fun, interesting and challenging. National Grid’s got a reallyy great culture. You can go up to anyone and askk them anything and they’ll help. A lot of people join as an apprentice and retire in the same company; that’s a testament to the culture of the business. It’s ’ a really exciting place to be at the moment. National Grid is effectively rewiring the whole off the UK. TTo be a part of that lasting legacy is great. As an engineer, you want to leave something behind that’s better than when you started. That’s ’ the fun bit – going home feeling that you’ve made a difference.

Vicky Young This year has given me the chance to see that National Grid is the right company for me, and that I’m the right person for it too. You never know what to expect coming into a workk placement Y – whether you’ll be treated as a student or given real-life work to do – and I couldn’t believe how much I was treated as a permanent employee!

“ I want to be developed so one day I can manage a team of my own – I know I can do that here.” Vicky Young, IS Industrial Placement Student)

Vicky Young, IS Industrial Placement Student

I’m quite career-foc r used and strong minded, and to know that National Grid is going to put a lot into developing me to become stronger as a person and as a manager really appeals to me. I also appreciate the flexibility and the people I work with – everybody’s so engaging. I’ve felt part of the team and based on my placement year here, I know I’ll have a really good career with National Grid. This placement year has allowed me to look at roles and consider what I do like to do. I want to go into some kind of management role. Whether that’s project management or people management I’m not entirely sure. But that’s the beauty of the graduate programme – it will allow me to explore that in greater depth.

It is hardly surprising to see Barratt’s incredible score of 4.9/5 for Training Provision. Simply put, “the training is exceptional”. This high score can be put down to a number of factors, but the ones which seem to shine through most are the regular mentoring from senior management and the value of the first year rotations, which “give graduates an excellent overview of the business before specialising in a chosen discipline.” The support provided is simply described as “incredible” by one reviewer, while another explains that “having direct face-to-face access to directors is fantastic and gives you a real sense of responsibility”. It is therefore far from surprising to see Cushman Wakefield’s rating of 4.1/5 for Responsibility. Given these high levels of responsibility early on, it makes sense, therefore, that graduates are well-prepared for the task with extensive Training, for which the company receives a rating 4.5/5. Employees also speak highly of the “extremely pleasant working environment” and the “great team atmosphere”, which goes some way in explaining why the company receives a rating of 4.2/5 for Company Culture/Work Environment and 4.3/5 for Enjoyable/Challenging Work. Putting all of these factors together, it is easy to see why employees at Cushman Wakefield are so satisfied with their job. Succinctly put, it is “a global firm with a wealth of experience and knowledge – a fantastic place to learn and start your career”.

COMPANY: BHS

AVERAGE RATING:

3.70/5 “I love my job for a number of reasons”. This probably best sums up the attitude of graduates at BHS, who struggle to pick out just one outstanding aspect of working at the company. One employee claims that “the people are the best thing”, a view reflected in the company’s rating of 4.1/5 for Colleagues. “The teams you get to manage are fantastic”, enthuses one reviewer, while another explains: “The people I work with are great and the training I receive is outstanding”, highlighted by the rating of 4/5 for Training.

The “great training programme with plenty of support” scores the company 4.1/5 for Support, as it offers the opportunity to “work in different areas to gain a better understanding of the business and to become a better manager”. One employee explains: “The support and communication between the office and stores just gets better and better”. Many reviews also point to the “positive energy in store, head office and the business as a whole”, which one employee claims “is inspiring – it makes me love what I do and drives me to succeed on a daily basis”. BHS’s “constant desire to better the company and its people” and the fact that “no two days are the same” go some way in explaining the company’s rating of 4.1/5 for Enjoyable/ Challenging Work. With plenty of career progression opportunities to boot, “inspirational leaders”, and a business which is “ever-evolving”, it’s hard to argue with one happy employee: “I truly believe that the future of BHS is an exciting one”.

Other happy graduates point to the “incredibly fast progression opportunities” and the “really strong focus on your development and career progression from day one.” One reviewer explains that the company “allows you to test and try job roles and offers plenty of opportunities to change careers”, while another simply claims: “The opportunities to develop and progress are almost infinite.” So it is hardly surprising to see TK Maxx’s score of 4.5/5 for Career Progression. The company’s people are also one of its strengths. Described as “fun, relaxed, outgoing, challenging and dedicated”, they provide an excellent and supportive environment to work in. With a “strong sense of teamwork where senior leaders aren’t just behind closed doors”, it is easy to see why TK Maxx received ratings of 4.7/5 for Colleagues and 4.5/5 for Management. Throw in the exemplary graduate scheme which scored the company 4.8/5 for Training and 4.7/5 for Support, and there can be little doubt that TK Maxx is hard to beat as a place to begin a graduate career.
