Megha Malik of RESA Fine Jewellery shares with The J Mag, how gold is an integral part of any Indian wedding, platinum making its way into the wedding segment and Mathapati, Statement Oversized Maang Tikka, jhoomar on the side and Statement Choker are the talking trends of 2019.

Gold is considered to be lucky People of all ages, whether they are from the girl’s side or the boy’s side wear attractive gold jewellery with pride. On top of all, no one can imagine the bride without gold like her head (maangtikka) to her feet (paayal). Gold is an auspicious precious metal, which many people believe, brings wealth and prosperity along with the blessings of goddess Lakshmi. Moreover, if the bride – Gruha Lakshmi, brings gold into her new home, In-laws consider it a highly lucky.

Wedding Jewellery: A statement piece Wedding jewellery doesn’t limit only to the bride and groom as these days family members of the bride/groom and their friends too invest in good style and statement jewellery pieces. I have got a lot of young girls and mothers of the brides to get their statement jewellery pieces designed for the last winter wedding season.

Platinum and Palladium paving its way As you see the most popular choice for a wedding is gold, apart from that the other metals preferred for weddings are Platinum and Palladium due to its hardness, rarity and naturally white sheen look that will never fade or change colour with time. The best choice if you have the budget for a prestigious ring go for a platinum diamond ring which will last a lifetime and get you all the love from your beloved.

The personal style Firstly, it depends on the kind of wedding that one is about to have. For example, a court marriage will demand jewellery that is very different from a big fat Indian wedding, they might consider minimal and worth the value jewellery pieces. It also largely depends on one’s personal style. If someone who believes in minimalist dressing, then they stick to a similar style at their wedding. However, if someone like bling, then they feel free to go a little OTT at their wedding and do not miss any particular piece to get on a special day.

2019 Wedding Jewellery Trend This year I have got a lot of clients who either wish to recreate their mother/grandmother’s sustainable jewellery pieces or wish to have similar jewellery designs what their mother wore in her wedding. To have the most beautiful and royal bridal look is a dream of every Indian girl and the style of jewellery they might opt for their big day is very personal. Still, trends like grandeur Mathapati, Statement Oversized Maang Tikka, jhoomar on the side and Statement Choker are very much in trend this year.

Bridal Jewellery Essentials Maang Teeka is a piece of jewellery that women wear on the centre parting of their head. The head jewellery is very specifically categorized as occasion wear and you would see most of the Indian brides gracing it to elevate their look. It dresses you up instantly, brightens up your face and brings focus to it. It is important to choose a piece that is in lieu of the size of your forehead. Traditionally, the Necklace is one of the most auspicious elements of wedding jewellery and a mandatory element of jewellery to be worn by a bride or a married woman. You’d seldom see any bride without a necklace. Earrings frame your face and enhance your features further. It is important to keep in mind the comfort factor when choosing a pair to grace your wedding outfit. A wrong pair can often nag you and wear you down. We believe that nothing should come in the way of you enjoying your own wedding and choosing the right pair of earrings is definitely an aspect you should consider. Traditionally, a Nose Ring is a sign of marriage and symbolizes virginity. You’d see the accessory take different forms throughout the varied cultures in India but the philosophy behind it essentially remains the same. Waist Belts have always had a very oscillating curve when it comes to being in trend. However, this accessory has always been a significant one down South. However, we see it coming back in vogue again specially to accessorize your saree looks.

Significance of gold in wedding jewellery It is difficult to imagine a typical Indian wedding without gold. For centuries, gold has become an integral part of Indian nuptials. There are several reasons for this pivotal position of gold in Indian weddings – emotional and otherwise. For one, gold is supposed to bring the blessings of goddess Lakshmi through the bride often called as Gruha Lakshmi a belief that has been passed over from generation to generation and ingrained in the people’s mind. Besides, gold has also been considered as an auspicious metal and hence a perfect fit during a solemn occasion like marriage. Gold has positive effects on a person’s well-being. The yellow metal is used for a variety of ailments. Wearing 24-karat gold directly against the skin has helped to improve Arthritis, Soreness, Regulate Body Temperature etc.

It is not just bridal jewellery Absolutely not. As we already alluded to, gold is a very well entrenched concept in the Indian psyche and has been considered as an auspicious metal that fits perfectly with an auspicious occasion like weddings. Bride and groom are indeed considered blessed when they wear gold during the occasion. Similarly, those friends and relatives who throng a marriage hall to bless the bride and groom also wear jewellery as befitting and to bless the newlyweds. This is a time tested tradition and most Indian cannot even think of going to marriage without wearing gold ornaments.

Beyond gold.. It depends on the cultural and economic setting of the family. Other than gold, platinum and silver are considered as metals that enhance the wedding ambience. These metals, however, were used more often as supporting structures for precious stones like sparkling diamonds or gemstones like anengagement or wedding ring. However, no metal can replace gold in any Indian wedding.

Trend among Bride and Groom Ans: Wedding is the Big Day for both the bride and groom. Therefore, they chose the ornaments as exquisite as possible to add glitter to the wedding splash. As for the bride, the choices are unlimited and depend on the custom and tradition of the family. More discerning brides strike a balance between the tradition and the trending. As far as the groom is considered, the minimalist tradition of sticking to rings and chains are fast becoming a passe. There has been a whole array of trending ornaments now available to adorn grooms during nuptials. Most brides and grooms now settle for their jewellery sticking to some universal norms such as `do not overdo it meaningless is more in appearance’. The art of picking wedding jewellery must be aesthetic and it should sync with the wedding costume. In other words, wedding ornaments should seamlessly blend with the overall theme of the bridal wear or groom’s attire.

Wedding Jewellery 2019 Diamond is one jewellery trend in India that has been going strong since years that of wearing diamonds for the wedding. Brides today choose to wear at least one diamond necklaces with the gold jewellery for her wedding. Apart from other gemstones like Ruby/ Emerald/ Pearls etc. are also on trend.

Thali or Mangalsutra: the sacred connect Ans: For a bride, every jewellery piece is important. As per the traditional beliefs, the bride has to wear ornaments from head to toe. On different cultures there is a difference in preference, like for Tamil bride waist belt is a must a Kerala bride likes to wear traditional piece of ornaments etc. But among all, the Mangalstura or Thali mala is the most of the cultures. The holy thread for this piece of ornament symbolises the real meaning and concept of a Hindu marriage. The Mangalstura/Thali is not an ordinary ornament, it is a mark of respect, love and dignity which is presented to the wife by her husband during the auspicious hour of the marriage day.

JEWELS Gold is synonymous to traditions, good luck and is considered to be auspicious especially within the Indian culture. Hence, we see gold jewellery predominantly being gifted and worn in weddings. Many times you will have a mother pass on her gold jewellery to her daughter at the wedding so there’s a sentimental value attached to gold jewellery. Having said that, I think the modern bride is evolving and we’re seeing a lot of brides opt for alternative precious metals such as Sterling Silver, says Rishabh Kothari, Founder & CEO, TALISMAN in an exclusive interview with The J Mag.

From Bride to groom to the bridesmaids

Wedding jewellery is something that everyone in the family is excited about – from the mothers and sisters of the bride and groom to the bridesmaids as well. Jewellery completes any outfit or look so it should really be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe.

Silver is in trend

Modern brides are looking for jewellery that is personal, stylish and not too heavy on the wallet. So, 925 Sterling Silver has come to the forefront. You often see Silver Chandballis and Jhumkis trending as some of the most fashionable wedding choices. Even when it comes to wedding bands and rings, couples opt for Sterling Silver customised bands or bands that they can carry across different occasions – including work, gym, etc.

Personalised Jewellery

Couples want jewellery that is beautiful, an extension of their outfit and something that they will remember forever. But what’s changed in the recent past is that bride and grooms are looking for jewellery that is personalised i.e. a reflection of their personalities and relationship. They are also seeking for something that they can use on a day-to-day basis – it’s no longer a case of keeping it in the locker for the future.

Wedding Jewellery Trend 2019

Last year, we saw a revolution in the way women chose to wear their ‘mangalsutra’. Following on that trend, I think this year we will be looking at couples opting for wedding bands in mixed metals, rose gold and silver with customisations such as birthstones, design motifs, etc. Stackable love bands are also gaining popularity.

Significance of Diamond Jewellery

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and a symbol of everlasting love. With changing times, we see the nature of this friendship has evolved into a deeper meaning. Young brides have always been choosing diamonds for their special wedding functions but what is interesting now is a shifting preference to diamond jewellery that is multi-dimensional and designed in a way that allows them to play around with their statement pieces. Increasingly women want diamonds that are genuine, natural and untreated and something that will withstand the test of time as a representation of their marriage.

Inherently Rare, Precious and of Enduring Value

Indian brides today are globally exposed and are aware of international trends. There is also increasing awareness in the marketplace for buying good quality diamond jewellery. More and more young brides are buying diamond jewellery for their wedding as diamonds are inherently rare, precious and of enduring value. They are symbolic of the precious moments, aspirations and positivity which we all hold special in life.

Jewellery creates emotions

Wedding Jewellery today does not stand exclusive only for the bride and groom. Their families too choose to buy their own set of jewellery whether it be pre, during or post a wedding function. This is because, in India, buying jewellery is considered more of a tradition and carries an emotional sentiment for both, the bride and groom as well as their families. Such jewellery is not just considered an accessory, but also a momentous representation of their traditions and values.

pieces, however, with global exposure, we are now seeing more and more brides opting for wearable and elegant pieces as a part of their trousseau. Keeping this in mind we are creating silhouettes of jewellery that can be divided into multiple pieces; which means it can be used as a large piece of jewellery or can be broken down to multiple smaller pieces of jewellery that can be used for different occasions This gives the woman the best of both worlds.

Securing the Bond with Solitaire

Solitaires have been gaining prominence, over the past few years. We have noticed a greater purchase of solitaire in the North market, whereas in the South consumers prefer more of the traditional pieces. The bride and groom opt for a solitaire engagement ring to secure the bond with the rare and beautiful stud. Also, brides look for solitaire stud earrings and neck pieces as a part of their trousseau which is more wearable, versatile and can be adorned through the year.

Diamond Wedding Jewellery Trend 2019

No outfit is complete without the right piece of jewellery that complements the bridal look. This year we have noticed a mix of traditional and contemporary designs when it comes to young brides opting for wedding jewellery along with bold, maximalist style. Brides also look for pieces that can be detached and be worn on other occasions or can be worn through the year.

A diamond solitaire ring is a symbol of certainty for a bride as it represents the security that comes with being in a committed relationship and exhibits their love for each other, making it the most important element for a bride.

Personal Style Firstly, it depends on the kind of wedding that you are about to have. For example, a court marriage will demand jewellery that is very different from a big fat Indian wedding. It also largely depends on your personal styles so I feel If you are someone who believes in the minimalist dressing then stick to a similar style at your wedding. Wedding jewellery for every bride-to-be embraces a very significant and special place. Most of the times the jewellery is passed on from one generation to another which is regarded as a token of blessing and holds a very strong sentimental value.

Wedding trends 2019 Wedding jewellery ought to be versatile and definitive, with varied jewellery kinds and pieces that can then be fashioned with any attire for any occasion. Keeping up with the wedding jewellery trends allows ones to tailor the right type of jewellery for the celebrations. A complete jewellery range can complement the character and originality not only to the bride but also to the groom. Some of the wedding jewellery trends that will rock the year 2019 are Ethical wedding rings, Floral Jewellery, Sabhyasachi inspired choker, Unique Temple Jewellery, Oversized nose ring, and Maharani style necklace, Maang Teeka, & Necklace most important element of a bride’s jewellery piece.

Azva by Tanishq

Talking about her love for jewellery and gold she says, “gold is the common metal in every marriage in India no matter rich or poor, but you will own gold according to your status and wealth. Gold has a serious significance, it’s an auspicious precious metal, believes to bring luck and wealth, gold is a lucky omen believe by Indians. She feels though jewellery plays one of the most parts in a wedding, it is the ancestral jewellery that enhances the look of the bride and well as adds shimmer to the wedding adding a royal expression to it. Indian bride and jewellery have always been an attention grabber. The jewellery designs,

type of jewellery, the metal used etc are some of the important details that people look for. However; the actual exquisiteness of the jewellery pieces lies much deeper and is measured with a blend of divine and edifying essences for the most auspicious and beautiful occasion of a woman’s life. It is very important that wedding jewellery is rightly paired with bridal wear and makeup. There are several key trends in bridal wedding rings this season. Some of the important jewellery pieces that brides primarily focus on are necklace- the choker style, nath, bridal bracelets, cocktail for big royal rings, earrings, maang teeka, kamarband, armlet.

I am totally a jewellery person. I am not just a believer that it's the best investment you can make but I am very fond of different kinds of stones and jewels. Stones like diamonds, kundan, rubies, and emeralds. I want to own a piece of all of it. Just a little bit of all and gold for sure.

Diamond buying: A sense of achievement Diamonds are girl’s best friend and for me for sure. When I buy it for myself, I feel a sense of achievement. When I look at it, it makes me feel good. That's what your best friend is supposed to make you feel.

Cartier & Tiffany My favourite diamond brand would be Cartier and Tiffany. I am yet to own something from them. We have a trusted jeweller who we always keep getting jewels for years. It's something that gets passed on from generation to generation.

Coloured Diamonds are trending I think coloured diamonds are a big rage. That's the new thing these days. A friend of mine got proposed and she had a yellow coloured diamond. It looked stunning. My mother owns a beautiful nose pin which is her statement. She has given me a pair of diamond solitaires which I without fail wear always and they also are lucky. Vintage is something that never goes out of style. So vintage diamonds and coloured diamonds are in vogue always. Ridhima Pandit is an Indian actress and model based in Mumbai.
