“Diamonds: The brilliance of the subtle shine” Our history, literature and culture have given us enough evidence that diamonds have been unfaltering signs of love and passion. But both in metaphor and reality, diamonds have also been associated with the definitive representation of victory, of having conquered the zenith of success. Diamonds can never go out of fad, it is not just the royals, or the elite have the awe with the diamonds, but today with the affordable diamonds, owning a diamond is not just a mere dream. It is said that jewellery reflects women’s personality and I feel it is true to some extent. These precious rocks have its own way to muse its wearer with is sophistication, sparkle and of course size too. Its size, colour, shape and clarity allow women as well as man the possibility to find a panache of jewellery they like. Every piece of jewellery is tagged with a story and a sentiment attached. There is a charm and desire to own diamonds and wear them. Our ‘Diamond Theme’ edition is all set to shimmer with celebrity’s love for diamonds, designer’s passion for creating and much more. Be ready to be dazzled!

THE ALLURE OF

DIAMONDS THEN, NOW AND IN THE FUTURE Cultures around the world have been magnetically attracted to the glittering allure of the diamond for centuries. Virtually indestructible and ranking a top ten on the Mohs hardness scale, nothing can cut a diamond but another diamond. Long revered as a talisman to fend off fear, negative influences, and the evil eye, the diamond is also believed to strengthen the bearer’s vital energies. The diamond derives its name from the Latin diamas, the unconquerable, which both explains and reflects the stone’s paramount position throughout time as the preeminent icon of eternal love. Still, the favorite choice for the stone to mark a betrothal, diamonds continue to be a girl’s best friend when it comes to the standard jewel box favorites of bracelets, bangles, stud earrings, and necklaces. As culture increasingly shifts towards the casual, diamonds are gracing highly individual and extremely versatile jewelry pieces with their presence that still retains all this gemstone’s timeless quality. Diamonds have been found and mined in a surprising number of countries. Golconda diamonds come from the like-named region of Southern India and date back to the 17th century. Included in the most precious pieces of Mogul jewelry, they are extremely rare and possess a unique transparency that sets them apart from all other

diamonds. In the 18th century, Brazil yielded up its diamond trove, and by the end of the 19th century, the African countries of Botswana, Namibia, Zaire and South Africa took over as the major source of the world’s diamonds. More recently, Russia, Canada, Australia, and Greenland have joined the club. Although best known for the brilliant transparent variant, diamonds come in a dazzling array of colors including yellow, pink, blue, green, champagne, cognac, chocolate, and even black. In fact, awareness for fancy color diamonds is at an all-time high thanks not only to celebrities flaunting their fancies on the red carpet, but also for the record-breaking prices the rarest of the rare are achieving at auction. This was never more obvious than in November 2018 when the Pink

Legacy Diamond, an extremely rare stone of almost 19 carats went under Christie’s auction hammer on Geneva. The sale price of 50.3 million Swiss francs ($50 million, 44 million euros), according to the auction house, set a new per-carat record for a stone of its kind. Moreover, fancy shapes are trending in diamonds including cushion, pear, emerald and heart, as well as rose cut, sliced, octahedron, and even rough in bespoke designs. Diamonds historically dominate the Hollywood scene, with some dazzling examples adorning our favorite celebrities at major awards. Lady Gaga made a breathtaking appearance on the 2019 Academy Awards red carpet wearing Tiffany & Co.’s legendary, 128.5-carat yellow diamond, reported to now be worth $30 million. The diamond’s last appearance was back in 1961 when Audrey Hepburn wore it for publicity photos for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Diamonds can also be created in a laboratory and

Brands such as Atelier Swarovski have managed to position laboratorycreated diamonds at the heart of the luxury industry in the recent years. And there are even more man-made jewelry stones, that perfectly resemble diamonds in terms of their optical characteristics. The most important is cubic zirconia. In this category, Swarovski Zirconia is in a class of its own. With all the characteristics of a genuine diamond, each stone shines with the quality and craftsmanship you can expect from the Swarovski brand. The finest raw materials are first carefully sourced, before being cut and polished to perfection by qualified Swarovski technicians. Every single Swarovski Zirconia is marked with a microscopic laser engraving that is completely invisible to the naked eye but speaks of authenticity and quality.

There is no escaping the fact that diamonds are best compared to any other precious or gemstones. Every girl dreams to own a diamond. I can say that diamonds are my best friends and I adore them.

Subtle and Classy When it comes to brands, Tanishq is my favourite as their jewellery is very subtle and classy. You can wear them for any occasion, and you need not put anything else. According to me, it is very important to have a style statement and diamonds add the perfect bling to one’s panache. Just as it is regarded as a symbol of love, diamond jewellery adds a majestic touch to any attire.

She fulfilled and excelled every roles she was bestowed upon with, but over the years she recognised a gap in the fine jewellery market and decided to address it. In an exclusive e-interaction with The J Mag, she shares he journey of learnings and experiences.

SAROJA YERAMILLI “Being an entrepreneur means I have also had to unlearn a lot of concepts. What has stood the test of time, however, is my need to understand how a business grows, and this has held me in good stead until now. The corporate world does not encourage risk-taking and does not reward failure either. However, what I learnt in the start-up world is that if you are not failing, you are not innovating. There is a need to be more flexible and agile in a start-up, else you may miss out on growth opportunities. “

INTERVIEW

Bridging the gap Most of the precious jewellery in the market today is either traditional or heavy, not in sync with the lifestyle and western wardrobe of the modern woman. Accessories like bags and shoes have caught up with this evolution unlike precious jewellery. Fine jewellery is still looked upon as an investment with purchases driven by special occasions like weddings. Most of the jewellery industry caters to this segment with an investment-oriented mind set. So, there aren’t any stylish options or trendy precious jewellery for the discerning modern buyer. So, women have moved away from precious jewellery to fulfil their desire for accessorizing fashionably. Catering to these buyers, Melorra brings together a range of trendy fine jewellery that is lightweight and designed for everyday use. Keeping in mind the ever-evolving taste of the consumer, we fill the gap in this segment and bring to them fine jewellery that is not barred by occasion or outfit, catering to a segment that demands precious jewellery in sync with their wardrobe and seasonal trends. All our collections are inspired by the latest global runways trends and there is something for every woman to be paired with any outfit she wears. For instance, our recent springsummer 2019 collections are inspired by the spirit of the season. These include themes like Fruity Yellow - the colour of this season, beach-inspired California Girl, ruffles in AllDolled-Up and utilitarian-trend inspired Modern Safari.

Experimenting with what I wear I am a jewellery person. I like to accessorize my workwear - a pair of pants and formal shirt with gold studs and a necklace or with a dress, I would opt for hoops on my ears and a gold bracelet. I feel it is important for the jewellery you wear to connect with you as a person as well as complement what you wear. Gold has made a comeback and on Melorra, you’ll discover never-before seen designs and colours. Gone are the days when gold was only meant for occasions such as marriages or traditional occasions. It

can be worn with any outfit thanks to lightweight and trendy options available today. Some of my favourites include the beach-life inspired California Girl collection, the Fluo Neon collection and the Animal Print collection from Melorra for the sheer variety and colours these bring to my wardrobe.

Diamonds are perfect gifts One cannot really go wrong with diamonds. They make for a perfect gift irrespective of the occasion. They are also beautiful, long lasting, and a symbol of commitment, love, and security. However, I would also like to emphasize here that gold is trending like never before given that it is possible to mould it into different designs and create some beautiful, lightweight, and trendy options – something that Melorra is already doing successfully. The stereotypes around gold jewellery are breaking with more and more women experimenting with lightweight gold jewellery that goes with their contemporary outfits. A large number of our customers are also from Tier 2 and 3 cities.

Styling the contemporary wardrobe of the modern woman Melorra is a fashion-forward, real gold and diamond jewellery brand that styles for the contemporary wardrobe of the modern woman. Curated from international fashion trends, our designs are lightweight and trendy, keeping in mind the modern woman’s changing needs. Thus, at the onset of any new season in fashion, our consumers have a range of daily wear precious jewellery to choose from. Jewellery that’s trendy, modern and trending this season! • Designs that reflect global runway trends (no other brand in this space is creating such designs that are in sync with the trends on the runways of Milan, New York, Paris and London) • Speed of launching new collections using 3D printing technology – Melorra create close to 300 new designs every month i.e. 10 new designs every day • Melorra offer the largest range under Rs 30,000, making us India’s most affordable fine jewellery brand • Quality of gold and recognised agencies

Fancy – And Unique – Shapes We’ve got Meghan Markle to thank for this one! The Duchess of Sussex’s engagement ring is one of the reasons this look is so popular. Diamond rings featuring three stones – a larger centre stone flanked by two smaller stones.

Round brilliant diamond shapes are always classic favourite, but fancy shaped diamonds are also popular, particularly for those looking for a different diamond vibe!! It is not just for its shapes like princess, oval, emerald and even heart shapes fancy diamonds are popular, but one can also find different cuts and shapes popping up from time to time.

The three stones represent “Past, Present and Future.” Alternately, the ring can symbolize “friendship, love and fidelity.”

Large & Long Earrings In trend from 2018 and continues to spread its popularity in 2019 too. Large, bold or statement Diamond earrings are the cynosures . There is a extensive range of styles, comprising of long, shoulder-grazing chandeliers, big hoops, large mismatched earring in styles as well as in size.

One such is the ASHOKA CUT , which is essentially a modified cushion-cut, with a rectangular shape and rounded corners. With 62 facets, it can help a stone appear larger than it is. Women of millennials, now buy their own diamond jewellery and make their own choices, after all, Diamonds are a girl’s best friend !! Begins with design For me, the three roles of entrepreneur, designer and innovator are all interlinked. While I love my designer avatar, the process of creation constantly needs innovation to ensure that we as a brand are constantly evolving with the trends in the market. Once our product is ready, it needs to be marketed via innovative ideas that will not just reach but also create an aspiration within our target audiences of patrons. It is at this stage where the entrepreneur in me kicks in. So it definitely is a difficult choice, but for me, it always starts with the design. In love with jewellery While that is true, this business was actually founded by my sister. When she made her first million and wanted to travel the world, she left her office in the hands of her younger brother, who was still in college at the time. From that time, I fell in love with jewellery and have never looked back ever since… Everything inspires me

Creations whether it is from one of my travels, or from the flora and fauna in my beach home or even a book I read on a flight. When it comes to design, I am a sponge and absorb everything around me and amalgamate these various influences into my designs. Resonates with the millennials As a brand, we wanted to create a collection that resonates with the millenials. After seeing my daughter in law, my nieces and all their friends’ fashion sense and how different it was from my generation’s, I created a collection called Colours of Life. This collection uses a combination of two different coloured gemstones with diamonds. The designs in this collection have now become a signature part of our collection as it resonates with not just millenials but women of all ages who prefer fashionable modern jewellery.

I cannot pinpoint one particular concept or inspiration for my designs. Inspirations and concepts come from all of Almighty’s

INTERVIEW

Not just my patron I do not create jewellery for a particular kind of woman but create elegant designs that will withstand the test of times and constantly changing trends so that not just my patrons but their families can enjoy their Rose possessions for generations to come. More than a particular kind of woman, the gems inspire me during the process of creation. Beyond jewellery Since we are a fully vertically integrated company, each and every piece from Rose takes numerous hours in our design studio, lapidarium and atelier to create pieces that are worthy of the exacting standards of our patrons. I love it when a lady who understands and appreciates the quality of our craftsmanship wears our pieces because these people feel joy and pride in possessing that particular piece. When a lady feels proud of what she wears, it enhances her beauty as well as that of her Rose acquisition everytime she wears it.

in gemstones, quality of manufacturing, and design; making each and every piece of this collection truly one-of-a-kind in the world. When I first joined the gems & jewellery industry, I always had a dream to work with one-of-a-kind gems that would cement my legacy as a jewellery designer. In 2010, I was blessed with my first treasure – the Empress of Rose, the World’s Largest Pear Shaped Colombian Emerald (290.52 Carats). Over the last decade, we at Rose have been blessed by

Countless excellence Rose stands for beauty, honesty, happiness, royalty, power, a fragrance of sweetness, love, respect, confidence, care, sensitivity, friendship, and many such qualities so the best way to describe our philosophy is to sum it up in our brand itself i.e. Rose. Rose Treasures My most treasured collection is called Rose Treasures. In this collection, we have pieces that are irreplaceable

the number of one-of-a-kind gems that have passed through our hands. In order to enhance the beauty of these gems, each of these pieces have pushed my boundaries of creativity, design and craftsmanship and hence, this is the collection that I cherish the most. An exclusive interview with The J Mag

A Diamond is a gem of exceptional beauty. It is believed to last forever. Diamonds are tough, yet beautiful and can be equated with a strong and beautiful woman. The sturdiness and brightness of the brilliant stone signifies the strength of love, the reason why Diamonds are used for engagement and wedding rings. Every gemstone is believed to be associated with a planet. Diamonds are believed to be associated with planet Venus. Venus is also the Roman Goddess of Beauty and Brilliance. There are many cuts for Diamonds, namely Princess, Pear, Oval, Round. There are different colours for Diamonds such as pink, blue, green etc. Pure white Diamond is the most precious one. The greater the whiteness, the greater is the cost of the diamond. Clarity of Diamonds is also important. The Quality of Diamond increases with its clarity. Diamond Jewellery & accessories can not only enhance a man’s overall appearance, but also add a touch of sophistication to his appearance.

Big sized diamonds in trends The most popular trend is of elegantly designed classic all diamond jewellery with big sized diamonds in fancy shapes like drop diamonds, emerald cut, cushion cut diamonds, heart-shaped diamonds, oval diamonds and princess cut diamonds, besides the round brilliant diamonds. The trend is inspired by the era of Aristocrats who loved big diamonds.

It is a beautiful necklace with a stunning 6 carat drop diamond right in the centre and it is the most iconic piece up to date. We have made a few iconic collections during our journey.

Story of NATURAL &

LAB GROWN

DIAMONDS

INTRODUCTION TO NATURAL DIAMONDS

Diamonds which form naturally under high pressure and high temperature within the Earth are termed as Natural Diamonds. Natural diamonds take over 1 billion to 15 million years to grow under stable conditions. The diamonds are carried to the surface through diamond bearing rocks known as Kimberlite and Lamporite. Primary and secondary deposits are the main sources for mining of diamonds. While primary mining includes open pit and underground mining, secondary deposits include panning from river beds and deep ocean mining. All diamonds mined from natural resources are processed further for quality. Only a minute percentage of diamonds are used in jewellery. Most of the mined diamonds are used in various industries including the medical and aeronautic industries. Diamonds are valued as per their 4Cs which include Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut.

LAB GROWN OR SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS Meaning of a Lab Grown Diamond Man-made reproduction of diamond that has the same chemical composition, crystal structure optical and physical properties as its natural counterpart. Lab grown diamonds are hence not diamond imitations nor diamond simulants, as these are characterized by chemical and physical characteristics that differ significantly from those of diamond.

Difference between a Natural and Lab Grown Diamond - Properties

Difference between a Natural and Lab Grown Diamond – Growth Process Natural Grows 150 km below the earth’s surface Takes over 1 billion years to grow Long duration at High Pressure and Temperature Complex & unique growth pattern Rare

Lab Grown Grown in a laboratory Takes less than a few days, months to be grown “Extremely Short Duration” at High Pressure and Temperature Simple & repetitive growth pattern Not rare

With the advent of newer technologies available for treating and synthesizing diamonds, their detection becomes much harder at the ground level. With the appropriate information and continuous education, the industry as well as consumers will be able to face any challenge that comes forth.
