Checkerboards Return to Fightertown

Marines and Sailors of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312 returned to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort May 6-9 after a seven-month deployment. The Checkerboards were deployed aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt supporting combat operations overseas and maritime security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations. “I am very happy to be home,” said Maj. Chip Koskiniemi, the executive officer of VMFA-312. “The Marines and Sailors worked very hard while

MCAS Beaufort Military Spouses Club awards scholarships Story by Lance Cpl. Terry Haynes

The Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Military Spouses Club hosted a scholarship presentation on the air station May 4. According to their website, the MCAS Beaufort Military Spouses Club is a non-profit organization whose objectives are to promote good will, friendship and opportunities for families of service members stationed on MCAS Beaufort. They also raise funds for the further advancement of pursuits that benefit Marine Corps personnel, dependents and other charitable organizations. “I am very thankful for Photo by Lance Cpl. I will always remember the commitment of the MCAS Beaufort Military Spouses Club and all of their hard work.” Besides the springtime scholarship presentations, the MCAS Beaufort Military Spouses Club also hosts the annual Senior Tea which has been held since 1968 to show appreciation for the support of the local seniors in the area by bringing them to the air station for a day of entertainment, food and tea while being escorted by Marines. see

life on an aircraft carrier which means working longer shifts and being used to spending a lot of time on a ship,” said Sgt. Eric Clemons, an Avionics Supply Marine with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31. We started by spending a week on the Roosevelt a month before we actually deployed and extended the duration of our shifts to prepare ourselves for the longer shifts we would face while deployed. When we deployed, the transition to living on ship was very smooth thanks to these work ups. The Sailors helped us out with navigating around an aircraft carrier and with anything we

would need to help accomplish the mission.” After touching down on the air station, the Marines and Sailors of VMFA-312 were greeted by friends, family, and the leadership of Marine Aircraft Group 31. “There are good deployments and then there are epic deployments,” said Col. Frank Latt, the commanding officer of MAG-31. “The Checkerboards went out on the Roosevelt and accomplished their mission over and over again. They worked hand-in-hand with the Navy and crushed the enemy. I couldn’t be more proud of the way this squadron represented themselves and MAG-31. Welcome home Marines.”

“A big part of our organization’s mission is to help the air station grow and thrive by providing spouses and dependents with the resources they need to thrive,” said Lauren Williams, the president of the MCAS Beaufort Military Spouses Club. “By supporting them we’re not only investing in their future but also all of ours.” The money for the scholarships was raised at the MCAS Beaufort Officers

Club March 9. “We love helping and giving back to the families of our service members on the air station,” said Brittany Jamieson, the vice president of the MCAS Beaufort Military Spouses Club. “Families are the backbone of the Marines and Sailors who work on this air station and this is just our way of showing appreciation and giving back to them in any way that we can.”
