Every month at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, a new group of Marines attend and graduate the air station’s Corporal’s Course. This month 32 Marines are set to graduate, March 13. While at Corporal’s Course, these Non-Commissioned Officers are taught to exemplify the highest military bearing, integrity, discipline, and lead their peers and subordinates in physical standards. NCO’s are charged with training, teaching, and mentoring the next generation of Marines. NCO’s are taught to lead from the front, at the

points of friction. “For some people it may be the most difficult physical training they’ve ever done. It’s tailored to the needs of the Marine Corps and not the individuals,” said Gunnery Sgt. Justin Starleigh. “It’s good to see a change. Some Marines come here and struggle with Physical Fitness Tests and at the end of the course they’re able to pass them with no problem.” Throughout the course, the Marines are put through a barrage of physical tests. They begin with an initial Physical Fitness Test and from then on, are expected to perform each and every day. By the end

Jacob Zeilin, Colonel Commandant of the Marine Corps from 30 June 1864, was this date promoted to the rank of Brigadier General Commandant, the first time Congress authorized this rank for the Marine Corps. In August 2016, Pieczonka, reported to MAG-31. He executed the F/A-18 Weapons System Officer refresh period of instruction at VMFAT-101, and served as the Marine Aviation Training System Site Beaufort Operations Officer and acting Officer in Charge until March 26, 2017. Pieczonka, was reassigned to VMFA(AW)-224 to accompany the Bengals on deployment as their executive officer. “Ladies and Gentleman of the Bengals, I was fortunate enough to serve as your executive officer during your last deployment, now I am honored to serve you as your new commanding officer,” said Pieczonka. “As we move forward as a squadron, we are going to foster trust with one another, promote professionalism in everything we do, and execute our missions swiftly. We will uphold the high standards set by the men and women who wore this patch before us.”

After exchanging the squadron colors, the symbolic transfer of command, von Heimburg was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions aboard the air station and for leading his squadron in support of combat operations. “Everything we have done as a squadron couldn’t have been accomplished without the help of my Marines,” said von Heimburg. “The day I took command, I spoke about this squadron’s start with the battle of Guadalcanal. 75 years later, on the anniversary of that battle, we flew from a desolate location again supporting 1st Marine Division in direct combat operations. The reason everything went so well was from the hard work done by these Marines. The resolve showed by the Marines 75 years ago was demonstrated again six months ago. There is no doubt the Marines of VMFA(AW)-224 will be fighting battles and winning wars for the next 75 years. This has been an incredible journey. Thank you and Semper Fidelis.”

HITT program,” said Gunnery Sgt. Justin Starleigh the staff non-commissioned officer in charge of Corporal’s Course. “We have prescribed amount of PT hours we are supposed to reach as a part of our course but we almost always go over those hours.” Not only are the Marines tested individually, but as teams or squads. They have competitions based on how well they perform as a team, calling into practice everything they have been taught about leadership, discipline, and commitment. “It’s both physically and mentally demanding working together as a team, staying together and making sure no one is left behind,” said Cpl. Rodriqueke Faulks, a block NCO with Weapons Training Battalion aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. “We did an obstacle course race in groups of three and it’s important that everyone knew their job and knew how to work together.” The course’s physical training is based on the Marine Corps’ High Intensity Tactical Training program. According to their website, the HITT program’s purpose is

to enhance operational fitness levels and optimize combat readiness and resiliency. The comprehensive strength and conditioning program takes into consideration the physical demands of operational related activities in order to optimize physical performance while in combat, emphasizing strength, speed, power, and endurance while minimizing injuries. “I think I’ll use every part of what I learned here and apply it to my shop every day,” said Faulks. “We usually just do range type exercises and this course has definitely helped me diversify my PT plan so I have more to bring back to my shop so we can all train and get stronger as a whole.” As well as physical training, the course covers sword and guidon drilling, Marine Corps knowledge and history, customs and courtesies, and basic ethics and moral discussions on honor, courage and commitment. “I think one of the most important aspects I’ve been taught in all of this, is that even though, we as NCOs lead from the front, we are only as strong as our weakest link,”

Cobra Gold 18: Combined Joint Close Quarters Combat Training Story and photos by Tech. Sgt. Michael Brown III Marine Expeditionary Force

SATTAHIP, THAILAND — United States Marines constantly train with multiple weapons systems, to refine their already razor sharp skills. Reconnaissance Marines are trained in static-line and free-fall parachuting, dive, Ranger and a multitude of other courses offered to make them better at what they do. These courses are designed to give recon Marines the ability to quickly and safely gather intelligence for follow-on forces. The mission of recon Marines is to provide valuable intelligence to their command element allowing them to prepare follow-on forces for whatever opposition faces them. “We started out doing some familiarization on the range and then did some run-throughs on the close quarters shooting range and the multiple target shooting range,” said Sgt. Stephen South, a Goodyear, Arizona native, with 3rd Marine Reconnaissance Battalion, 3d Marine Division. “The language barrier made it slightly difficult but we made it work and were able to train with both Royal Thai Marines and Republic of Korea Marines and it was very rewarding.” The close quarters combat training and rifle practice prepare them for combat situations where they may be clearing a building in close proximity or facing enemy fire from a long range position. “One of the best things we have done is getting to learn their weapons systems as well as teaching them to use ours,” said South. “It’s been a really great experience working with the ROK and Thai Marines, and learning the different working styles they each bring to the table.” Working in a combined joint environment is not all about work. The Marines live and work together while training. In the evening they spend time getting to know each other better and enjoying some much needed relaxation as well. “The Thai Marines have been very polite and thankful,” said South. “They are extremely generous hosts.”

“This has allowed us to build friendships and further our partnership between each of our nations. Between the Republic of Korea, Thailand and the U.S., we are all recon Marines so we have formed a bond through our struggles to become recon Marines before we even met. It’s really cool to get a new perspective on how other countries conduct their training.”

Cobra Gold 18 is an annual exercise conducted in the Kingdom of Thailand held from Feb. 13-23 with seven full participating nations.

Sgt. Brad Robertson, 3rd Reconnaissance Marines, 3d Marine Divison

During their downtime the Marines get together after work to enjoy some games as well. “We have been playing games such as underwater hockey where you take a brick and pass it off without coming up for air. We won that one,” said Sgt. Brad Robertson, a Roswell, Georgia native with the, 3rd Reconnaissance Marines, 3d Marine Divison. “Also, the Thai Marines have challenged us to a game of soccer tonight.” Overall, the relationships are being built. The Recon Marines are learning a lot about each other and they are each taking home valuable skills to teach future recruits. “This has allowed us to build friendships and further our partnership between each of our nations,” said Robertson. “Between the Republic of Korea, Thailand and the U.S., we are all recon Marines so we have formed a bond through our struggles to become recon Marines before we even met. It’s really cool to get a new perspective on how other countries conduct their training.”
