‘Paper Jam’ hits some flat notes BY LOU KESTEN The Associated Press Nintendo’s lighthearted “Mario & Luigi” adventures are a good fix for people who like their roleplaying in more digestible chunks. They’re essentially RPG-lite, simplifying the character building and inventory management of more complicated epics. “Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam” (for the 3DS, $39.99) finds the brothers dealing with a threat from a different series: “Paper Mario,” in which all the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom are flattened into two dimensions. When Luigi cracks open an arcane book in his 3-D world, the 2-D characters start dropping from the skies. That means two Marios, two Princess Peaches and, unfortunately, two Bowsers. “Paper Jam” follows the usual formula from Japanese studio AlphaDream.

The action freezes whenever a battle begins, then Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario take turns jumping on enemies or hitting them with hammers. The heroes can also
team up, two or three at a time, to unleash more powerful attacks. It’s an appealing design, mixing oldschool, turn-based strategy with occasional arcade bits that test your reflexes. Unfortunately, the merger of the two franchises doesn’t bring out the best in either. The “Paper Mario” games are most no-
table for clever puzzles that played off the need to shift your perspective between 2-D and 3-D. Such challenges are absent from “Paper Jam,” and they are sorely missed. Indeed, “paper” only really comes into play when the two sides build giant papercraft versions of the heroes and villains, then set them loose in battle arenas. These boxing matches are tedious battles of attrition that drag on and on until one of the behemoths collapses. Then again, all the boss battles throughout “Paper Jam” will try your patience. No matter how well-equipped or versatile your guys are, some of these fights linger well past the half-hour mark — which is way too long for a portable game. You may want to switch to easy mode during the boss fights just to get them over with more quickly. Despite such roadblocks, I still enjoyed much of “Paper Jam.” There’s a sprawling world to explore and plenty of the droll, offkilter comedy the “Mario & Luigi” franchise is celebrated for. It’s not the most satisfying “M&L” adventure — that would be 2009’s “Bowser’s Inside Story” — but it’s a pleasant enough break from the apocalyptic gloom of most RPGs.
Go offline with Google Maps’ features BY ANICK JESDANUN AP Technology Writer ORLANDO, Fla. — I knew I wouldn’t get real-time traffic information and other features when I opted to rely solely on Google’s offline mapping capabilities for a week in and around Disney World near Orlando, Florida. In fact, Google Maps gave me trouble the moment I tried to leave the airport parking lot. Things got much smoother after that. But being able to navigate with no cellular connection certainly beat getting lost because I had no signal.
HOW IT WORKS You might not realize this, but mobile
mapping apps can typically still direct you even if you lose your cellular connection; their turn-by-turn voice prompts can tap GPS location information when cellular signals aren’t available. It’s still a bit like wandering around in the dark: The apps can’t display a map for you without downloading it first, and they need an Internet connection for that. They also can’t reroute you if you make a wrong turn. That’s where Google Maps’ offline features come in. You simply download mapping data for a given area ahead of time. That gives you local maps to enable GPS-based navigation. The downloaded data also includes enough information on nearby shops and other
businesses so that you can simply give the app the name of your destination rather than a specific address. If you’re old school, you could even use these maps to find your way around as you would with traditional paper maps. This is helpful if you’re in a remote national park with poor cellular connectivity or if you’re traveling internationally where cellular data gets expensive. Just download mapping data for the places you’re going before leaving home or from a hotel room with Wi-Fi. Google Maps isn’t the first to offer offline capabilities on iPhones and Android devices, but other offline apps I’ve tried cost money and weren’t easy to use. Notwithstanding a few mishaps, Google Maps is both free and reliable.
