Take a trip back to the 1950s with ‘Grease: Live’ BY KEVIN MCDONOUGH Awards show buffs can feast on the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (8 p.m. Saturday, TBS and TNT). These awards differ slightly in that, in addition to individual awards, they honor ensemble acting. Among the TV dramas nominated in that category are “Mad Men,” “Downton Abbey,” “House of Cards,” “Homeland,” and “Game of Thrones.” Nominated comedy ensembles include “Key & Peele,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Modern Family,” “Orange Is the New Black,” “Transparent” and “Veep.” “Fargo” and “Mozart in the Jungle” are notable absences from those lists. But nobody asked me. Carol Burnett will receive the Life Achievement Award from Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. For those interested in somebody else’s expensive wardrobe, E! offers “Live From the Red Carpet” (6 p.m., Saturday) coverage. • Bonded by violence, two women (Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez) seek vigilante justice in the 2015 indie-ish drama “Lila & Eve” (8 p.m. Saturday, Lifetime), released theatrically last year. Jennifer Lopez is all over the dial. She can now be seen several times a week on “American Idol” and in the NBC police drama “Shades of Blue.” Davis stars on ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder.” “Lila & Eve” also features Shea Whigham, a standout who played Nucky’s compromised brother on “Boardwalk Empire.” • The popularity of Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” and Discovery’s “Killing Fields” indicates an audience appreciation of long-form true-crime narratives. It also reflects the continued success of the ID Network’s steady diet of true-crime re-enactment series. Now that network pays homage to its imitator with “Steven Avery: Innocent or Guilty?” (9 p.m. Saturday, TV14), hosted by Keith Morrison (“Dateline”) — a look at the figures at the heart of “Making a Murderer.” • Fox invites viewers to return to Rydell High. As if we ever left. “Grease: Live” (7 p.m. Sunday, Fox, TV-14) features emerging musical talents, including Julianne Hough (“Rock of Ages”) as Sandy; Aaron Tveit (“Les Miserables”) as bad boy Danny Zuko; and Vanessa Hudgens (“High School Musical”) as bad girl Rizzo. Best known for the 1978 screen adaptation starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, the original stage version of “Grease” played in Chicago and Off-Broadway in 1971 and opened on Broadway on June 7, 1972, scant weeks before the venerable musical “Hair” ended its 1,750-performance

run on July 1. Broadway musical tastes aren’t usually terribly good indicators of the cultural zeitgeist, but it was clear back then that audiences were beginning to put the contentious 1960s behind them to embrace the “new” decade of the 1970s through the prism of a romanticized version of the 1950s. Goodbye, “Aquarius.” Hello, Sandra Dee! And nostalgia for that poodle-skirted, Hula-Hooping decade has been with us ever since. • In other musical news, ABC’s “Galavant” (8 p.m. Sunday, TV-PG) concludes its short second season. • Danny Trejo (“Machete”) hosts “Snaketacular” (10 p.m. Sunday, Discovery, TV-14), an hourlong look at slithering, creepy creatures that have been getting bad press ever since the Garden of Eden. • A “Vice Special Report: Fighting ISIS” (10 p.m. Sunday, HBO) presents footage from Iraq’s frontlines, separating that government’s beleaguered troops and tribal militias from ISIS forces trying to spread their fanatical vision of a pure Islamic caliphate throughout the Middle East. We’re also shown an interview with a captured insurgent, who stridently asserts the group’s desire to spread ISIS control throughout the world and who claims he would have no hesitation about decapitating his interviewer if given the chance. In a rather sobering interview, Ryan Crocker, a career ambassador and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, admits that the disintegration of Iraq and surrounding areas surpasses his “worst nightmares.” He agrees that prior to the 2003 U.S. invasion, Iraq had not been a center or source of terrorism and that the toppling of Saddam Hussein created a perfect vacuum for sectarian violence and the rise of extremist groups precisely like ISIS.

CULT CHOICE Samuel L. Jackson stars in the 2006 thriller “Snakes on a Plane” (10 p.m. Sunday, Cinemax).

SATURDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS • The Cleveland Cavaliers host the San Antonio Spurs in NBA action (8:30 p.m., ABC). • The atmosphere grows decidedly icy on “Doctor Who” (9 p.m., BBC America, TV-PG). • The weather proves too much for the Walrus crew on “Black Sails” (9 p.m., Starz, TV-MA). • Skiing and snowboarding take center stage at the Winter X Games (9 p.m., ESPN). • Renovators and investors go about fixing up and selling challenging,
