What messages are commercials conveying? BY KEVIN MCDONOUGH Olympics coverage (8 p.m., NBC) enters its final weekend. It’s been fun, but the limitations of the present broadcasting model are beginning to become painfully obvious. As on every day of the games, tonight’s prime-time menu of alpine skiing, short track and speed skating will be old news by the time they are shown on network television. It used to be rather easy to avoid the desktop computer in order to “pretend you didn’t know the outcome of these contests. But now, with everyone seemingly attached and addicted to tablets and smartphones, it’s a tad difficult to maintain the delusion. How many viewers of last Saturday’s U.S.-Russian hockey game were “surprised when it was finally broadcast? Given the atmosphere of fear and foreboding leading up to the games, we can consider ourselves lucky that the most controversial moment to emerge was the moment when reporter (and former Olympian) Christin Cooper made bronze medalist Bode Miller cry over the death of his brother. Viewers seem to have hated this, and that’s a good thing. After too many Olympics stories contorted into “special and “poignant moments, I’m all for a viewer backlash against gruesomely obvious emotional manipulation. Speaking of weird manipulation, I’ve been paying special attention to some of the commercials accompanying the games. Three “messages stood out to me. In one, a man slips into an expensive luxury vehicle and is joined by an unseen woman in the passenger seat. After embarking on some domestic chitchat, he looks over and exclaims, “You’re not my wife! To which, the gorgeous young thing with come-hither eyes,

replies, “I know. So this ad basically says that buying (or leasing) this expensive sedan will help you cheat on your wife, or at least fuel the adulterous side of your Walter Mitty daydreams. It seems aimed at men too old for lite beer bikini car wash fantasies but not yet parked in the Viagra demographic. In another ad, a teenage baby-sitter getting a drive home in a well-appointed SUV surveys the lavish interior and decides, on the spot, to raise her rates. This ad seems to appeal to people who don’t mind turning their baby-sitters into scheming little liars, or feel so insecure that they’ll spend tens of thousands of extra dollars to impress somebody else’s 16-year-old daughter. The anxiety this ad exploits is not gender-specific. Another shows a gas station where happy people mingle to the strains of the “Cheers theme. But when the driver of a hybrid walks in, the music stops and the tone becomes grim. Apparently, freedom from frequent fill-ups has made the driver a stranger. And that’s supposed to be a good thing. The lesson here: expensive technology doesn’t just leave you lonely, it makes the very idea of community and friendship seem repulsive and outdated. Human contact: that’s so 20th century!
